The Great Northern, in Derby

Had Christmas lunch with six friends today - £25.99 for THREE courses, which I thought, at Christmas-time, was a reasonable price. My parsnip soup was delicious and the two half-slices of granary bread, served with butter, were lovely and fresh. My butternut squash wellington was served on a plate with two boiled potatoes, two roast potatoes, two parsnips and a jug of gravy. There were additional dishes on the table with vegetables - peas, carrot batons, brussels, cauliflower cheese and red cabbage. My ginger sponge with custard was delicious. My only complaint was that the custard was already on the sponge and there was not enough of it. However, that was soon rectified when I asked for.more custard and the waiter very quickly brought over an additional jug of custard . All seven of us were very happy with the food.

Food completely bland not up to its usual standards. Used to eat here regularly it was great, not sure if they have a new chef but they need to get it sorted.

Always loved eating here but service today was dreadful. Food excellent but trying to get the attention of a waiter to order dessert was absolutely impossible! 6 of them lined up facing in my direction and I had to go up to the bar to order! Not at all attentive

A reasonable meal however on getting the bill I was shocked that it was thought ok to charge £1.75 for a basic orange squash,,at that price it is a killing because each drink must cover 3 bottles for the strength it was served at . Why do bars and restaurants still think it is right to charge the earth for being a responsible driver?

This is local to us and we’ve been numerous times for a drink but not often for food. I realised I take the time to review places we visit elsewhere but not often places more local! So that needed to change! This pub is lovely; and in the summer has a great outdoor space. Tonight we decided to go for food there and we weren’t disappointed. The specials menu was really tempting and convinced me to have a starter when I wouldn’t normally have. I had the mushrooms and my wife had a prawn dish. Both were really tasty. For main I had the minted lamb steaks and my wife had the minted lamb burger. Both were cooked to perfection and not a scrap was left! The service was really friendly and efficient too. The only less than positive thing I could say is that this place needs to be twice the size! It’s always so busy and if you’re just going for a drink it can be hard to find a seat at times as the restaurant area is larger than the bar area and every table is reserved. This is a place people clearly return to and with the new housing estate popping up next door I worry the demand will outweigh the capacity!

We were visiting the area so didn't know where to go for lunch so this pub came up on a Google search. So glad it did. Our lunch was delicious. The staff were lovely and the service was great. We didn't have to wait long either. We choose Cajun chicken ciabatta and brie and onion chutney ciabatta. It came with chips and a side salad. Very tasty and both enjoyed our meals. We know where to go when we visit again.

we called at dinner time and had lovely meals,the gammon was cooked spot on and not overwhelmed with chips,mum had scampi which she really enjoyed & said her meal was cooked lovely,we will definately be going again,the staff were friendly, efficient and polite.

Friendly staff. Great decor. Reasonably priced. We were a group of 3 friends. Two of the group enjoyed their meals (one Lamb's Liver, followed by Apple Pie and one Crumbed Scampi, followed by Chocolate Brownie). I was unfortunately disappointed. Perhaps a wrong choice of dishes. I ordered Mixed bean chilli ... turned out to be a rather mild tomatoe onion sauce, with very few beans in it and a large portion of rice. Lemon meringue pie as dessert, which had a strange sponge like texture ( it made me wonder whether it had been frozen and defrosted), and a very mild taste of lemon. I would not recommend either dish.

I live not far from the Great Northern so I am here fairly often with friends and family, I have never had a bad meal here, the food is always delicious and reasonably priced. I would especially recommend the lamb shanks! Their menu is vast and varied with lots of choice and the specials are also always good!

The first time we had been since before lockdown, we had always enjoyed the food there before as a family but last night very disappointing. the food was average for half of our party and very poor for the rest, tough chicken obviously overdone and soggy risotto. No one asked if everything was ok and in hindsight we should have complained. The attitude of the manager was quite frankly terrible, particularly his response as one of our party was ill and couldn't attend, we had driven over the night before to pay the deposit (this day and age you would have thought you could have done it over the phone. His attitude rubbed off on his staff unfortunately, needless to say we won't be going again or recommending it.

We had an evening wedding reception for approx 60 people. Self contained function room to a high standard. Step and Megan were very accommodating and communication was good. Buffet offered good choice of quality food at reasonable prices. Well stocked bar with options from themain bar if needed. Great night had by all

The restaurant was pleasantly busy with a great atmosphere. The staff were punctual and friendly. There was a good choice food on the menu and the specials board. The rhubarb gin and wine tasted great. Very good, would return again.

Really enjoyed our food at the pub. My daughter had the Tuscan chicken and I had the pie, were both very nice. Food wait was minimal, and atmosphere was friendly. Staff I believe were new, lacked confidence and were often slow, however were very polite....

A Sunday visit in the evening ordered mixed grill, Scampi and a burger. Food was good and hot and service was very good. No complaints and will be visiting again soon.

Went for a late evening meal, only place we could find in the local area with bookings. Plenty of parking space leads on to lots of outside tables. Bit of a maze but nicely decorated, staff were very polite despite our kids being normal teenagers....

Good meal in the courtyard, this area is very nice to sit on a summer's evening, you quite easily forget your in Mickleover, bit of a holiday vibe to it! Staff were professional and friendly, very glad we popped in here for an evening meal.

We haven’t been here for at least 2 years and it’s still as good. Food is perfect in quality portion sizes and choice We went lunch time through the week and was busy. We rang the day before to book great service all around well done to all the staff.

My husband and I ate here when away on a business trip. On the face of it, it looked like a great place, it was very busy and the food smelled amazing. Very good Covid measures and the staff were very welcoming efficient. The food was decent enough but I wouldn't call it 'gastro'.

It has been difficult to book into my local gastropub as, since the reopening of indoor dining on 17/05/2021, there has been phenomenal demand. However, it was worth going late one recent Saturday night for a dinner with my partner.The indoor decor is gorgeous. Waiting staff are friendly. The drinks selection is decent. The food was and continues to be wonderful. No wonder I keep coming back here! It's good to be back.

Visited this place now a few times after our bike rides. The staff working outside I have to say are excellent. So polite, well mannered and attentive. They are a credit to the establishment. Even to the point of us arriving and the lady who served us recognising our previous order. We’ve only sat outside but the atmosphere is always a nice one , chilled and relaxed

This isn't the closest pub to where we live but it is the one we visit most often.The food quality and variety is always good with a reasonably priced menu, and usually a nice selection from the 'specials' board.The bar area is very welcoming with a decent selection of beers.It also has an outdoor courtyard which is really nice.In summary - an excellent pub/restaurant in a nice location on the edge of Derby. Well worth a visit ...

Great pub with great customer service. Food was not great. Insipid tasteless meat served with the Sunday lunch. Drab veggie burger with a tiny bit of limp salad on it with frozen chips and no garnish of any kind. £25 for two mains and two drinks!

Lovely pub, the beer garden is lovely & the staff were really accomodating and friendly.Been past this place a few times and always looked nice & busy, decided to try the food under the new government iniative for tea with friends. The food didn't take too long to come and the staff were fantastic, unfortunately, the food was a different story. I'm not sure if the quality of the ingredients has dropped to due to supply issues or it has been reduced due to the eat out scheme but it wasn't good. Risotto was very bland & the seafood platter was abysmal it tasted like the 'Cray fish tails in a chilli coating' had come from iceland or herons 69p a bag and deep fried, the prawns again were like the £1 bag of crunchy water your nan would buy around Crimbo for the Prawn cocktail, the whitebait tbf wasn't too bad shame really on the food side.Alas still a great pub lovely graden etc perfect pit stop if going to the Drive in Cinema next door :)

Its sad to write this after its been shut for so long but hopefully they might take notice. Im sure it was bad day. Everything else was good. Good Covid-19 set up. Great service. Just the food was really average or poor. Unfortnately the chill that I ordered looked and tasted like weak bolognase with a bit of chilli mix powder. It was watery, there was only 1 or 2 kidney beans, 3 at maximum. There was even only a tiny bit of onion and nothing else. It was extremely bland and poor. The sour cream was nice to be fair.Wife ordered the halloumi burger which sounded lovely but, though not as bad as the chilli, was nothing amazing. The haloumi was nice but just on top of a bun with some lettuce and tomato. The chips were boring as hell as well, bog standard oven chips, probably 50p a bag from the wholesalers. Really disappointing.

The reason it gets one star is because the beer is reasonably priced. I was under the impression it was a decent establishment yet all I see is a run down pub that’s tried to gain a good reputation by revamping the place. One female member of staff not sure of her name, blonde, lots of make up was incredibly rude and when I spoke to her she looked at me then walked off! I was only asking politely if she could wipe the table we were sat at for us as it was dirty. Even that was an understatement it was absolutely disgusting!! She then proceeded to spray the table and my partners very pricey outfit!! Definitely won’t be coming here again that’s for sure!!

First visit for us, booked the evening before, Saturday lunch at 12:30 for three generations including a 5 and a 2-year-old. Made very welcome and served promptly, nice traditional bar and restaurant with plenty of light and not too noisy. One lasagne, one burger, one coq au vin and one lamb’s liver, plus a child’s lasagne and a child’s fish and chips, with some carrot sticks and cucumber with dips while we waited. It came reasonably quickly, freshly cooked and hot, and all delicious. Portion sizes not too big to manage four desserts between us. With a few beers and coffees the bill was really reasonable, our London guests were particularly impressed. Definitely one for a re-match!

A good pub restaurant. Service good, but be careful of the specials menu. I had "Mixed Seafood Linguini". I expected a mix of fish and shellfish. What was actually presented was wholly shellfish, which I am unable to eat. I complained to the waitress who said they would cook me something else, but only at an extra charge. I declined. When the bill was presented, I was expected top pay for the meal that I was unable to consume. I stated to this waiter that the description should really say, "Mikxed Shellfish Linguini", but the waiter showed little interest, and expected the bill to be paid. I accept that seafood will include shellfish, but I was surpised that a wholly shellfish dish was included on the menu wiothout clarification/ caution for those who may have shellfish allergies............ In any event, the dish should really have been described as "Linguini with some shellfish thrown-in". The shellfish element of the dish was minor compared to the pasta element. Not good value for money.

This is now our favourite local pub to pop into for a meal. The staff are always very welcoming and friendly and the food is very good.We had a pasta dish and a chicken dish - both were very good.No doubt we will be back soon.We also used their function room last year and the staff could not have been more helpful - nothing was too much trouble. They offered suggestions and also helped decorating the room. The food for the party was also very good and a number of guests commented on how nice the venue and food was.

A group of us went for breakfast at 10 o'clock on a Saturday morning, to celebrate the New Year. There was a huge choice on the menu, which all came fresh and piping hot, with cheerful service. Wonderful, very happy to go back.

Had dinner here today, prompt and very nice service, dinner came out with out delay, cooked well and hot, I had liver my hub had fish and chips mother had Sunday roast, all enjoyable, my hub only one small complaint the desert selection seems like most places to lean towards mostly ice cream style, their was one warm fudge pie I think, hub says what ever gas happened to good old apple pie, but we all said we would go back

We had a Christmas meal with friends on Thursday & were very impressed. From the moment we walked through the door, the staff were really friendly & attentive, seeming to genuinely want us to have a good time.Instead of rushing us, we were asked when we were ready for each course which was a thoughtful touch as so many places seem to bring the 'next course' straightaway & you don't really have time to enjoy the food.It was a terrible night weather-wise but the room was nice and warm, with comfortable space between the tables. (in the room with the bar)If we had to make any criticism, the prawns for the starter were really tasteless (the same last year) but the salad, sauce & mini loaf made up for that. However, we couldn't fault the main turkey course with vegetables and the puddings - Christmas pud./cheese & biscuits, the latter having 3 different cheeses - all delicious.The wine is reasonably priced too, our favourite being the Jack Rabbit Merlot.Thank you to the staff for a lovely evening. We'll definitely be back next year!

booked a family meal for 8 of us, service was quick and knowledgeable about the various dishes, when the food arrived it was excellent, hot and good size portions, there was no rushing with lots of time between courses and the deserts were also very good.

I've been today with a party of 22 friends and work colleagues for our xmas get together we had a fantastic meal piping hot and we were all served together . The food was excellent and the service was fantastic thank you so much to all the staff you made our day .

We had a lovely meal and stayed overnight in a beautiful room. The staff bent over backwards to make our stay great even managing to get us a table for dinner in a full restaurant. Lovely freshly made breakfast. Would highly recommend. Thank you.

We arrived to have lunch which we had pre booked a table met by very friendly staff, the service was excellent and the food was good . I had the ploughmans salad the only little quibble was there was only one very small portion of cheese but plenty of pork pie!!

Had lunch for 11 at The Great Northern today for my Father-in-law's 80th Birtday. Facilities were fantastic, the atmosphere was vibrant as it was busy, the Staff were attentive and knowledgeable, service was faultless and our food delicious. I know Keith enjoyed his Birthday Lunch and that was helped along by the great team at The Great Northern. Thank you and see you again soon.

Visited the Great Northern for a family meal, with 14 of us in the group. The staff handled our large party really well with excellent service and excellent food. The staff even split the bill so there were no problems at the end sorting out who pays what. I had a beautiful gammon steak which was so large I could not quite finish it. Other family members reported there food to be really good. Would highly recommend.

We have visited this establishment many times over the last two or so years always arriving late for lunch. The service is excellent with polite & attentive staff.

A party of three visited for lunch after a previous visit which caused us to complain to the manager and write a negative review on this site, our complaint was mainly about the very bad service we received. What a change, the service was very good, no long waits to order food, no dirty plates left on the table and we were offered pudding and coffees, result! That said we were really pleased this time, the place was buzzing and staff were very busy, but everyone was being looked after, definitely going again. Our waiter, sorry his name escapes me, was charming and efficient.

Called Good Friday for lunch. Party of 4. Surprised that it wasn’t that busy. Despite several reserved tables there were quite a few still available. Food was really good and the service matched this. Really good overall experience.

Arrived just before midday and able to find table. Pub soon filled up, so glad we arrived early. Friendly, warm atmosphere. Nice menu. I had something off the light bites menu and it was HUGE! So delicious and had no problems polishing it off. Great value for money.

Fantastic food very warm welcoming warm and comfortable surroundings feel very relaxed we go here on regular basis. We had our wedding reception here which was amazing in every way staff made it just that little bit extra special. Anything we requested the staff would make sure if they could do it that we got it fantastic pub and function room the boutique Rooms which we stayed in on our wedding day were gorgeous with everything you need for an overnight stay.

Me and my partner went on a Sunday, it was packed and we wish we had of booked however luckily we were able to sit in the bar area which is more relaxed than the restaurant section.

By far the best New Year in a long time in the Great Northern Function Room. Potentially booking for next year too! Plenty to entertain us and the atmosphere was buzzing. Food prompt, hot and a large variety too. Efficient staff that minimised queuing at the bar...Happy New Year to The Great Northern and keep up the good work!

We booked in advance of 30 people including 4 children and 2/3 babies for the 3 course meal.

We live locally to The Northern and visit fairly regularly sometimes just the two of us and frequently with friends. There were plenty of tables some reserved and the room was tastefully decorated but not over warm. Drinks and meals were ordered at the table and were served by very pleasant staff soon after. Loaded sharing Nachos were really nice and our main courses good. Being almost our local we will be visiting again soon, probably after Christmas.

Met a friend for a catch up as this is in his neck of the woods and was pleasantly suprised. Lovely building, convenient location and great selection of drinks.

We popped into the Great Northern as I was hankering for a roast but didn’t want to go through the process of cooking & washing up for just the two of us.

First time eating at the great northern, would definitely come back again. Sophie greeted us then brought me a vegan menu out which I was spoilt for choice. I had the risotto which was yummy and the onion rings which were amazing, not too greasy. Sophie and all the staff were really friendly and attentive throughout the evening.

We meet , without a reservation , for lunch and no trouble getting a table. Now it was not quiet in the restaurant, there was nice crowd in , but not packed.

Food is always lovely here and the staff are nice .

Attended for evening meal. Staff were great and freindly, helpful and polite. Shame about the food quality. Liver stated" served pink " certainly not , over cooked with sliceable "mash" overall very Dissapointed.

Visited here today for a lunch with my wife. The pub itself seemed very busy and the car park o spaces to park.

Celebrated mums 90th birthday, Relaxing atmosphere, warm welcome, helpful staff and excellent food and drinks. Space was a bit tight around the table. A number of children were in the bar, all very well behaved - Excellent day thanks to all.

Another excellent family party held at The Great Northern function suite. A big thanks to Steph and her team for making the party such a success. From the delicious hot/ cold buffet (particularly the samosas and potato wedges) through to the excellent service - nothing was too much trouble. From making the room look wonderful to setting up the music and tv presentation - everyone was so helpful and polite. Definitely recommend this place for family/friend functions and gatherings. Struggling to find something positive to say about the overall dining experience here, very disappointing. Group of us attended for a family birthday dinner. Popped by earlier on in the day to leave weighted helium balloons for the table which were nowhere to be seen on arrival. We had to ask for them which ruined the small surprise for the birthday girl. Starters were shared camembert platter with soggy bread. The whitebait was over fried and verging on burnt. We ploughed on hoping for improvement. The mains arrived and we had to ask for cutlery. We also asked for serviettes, 2 arrived for our party of 6. We asked again. Another 3 were then forthcoming. 2 of our party had steak with blue cheese sauce which strangely contained chopped onion, it was not nice. The other steak eater went to salt her meal whereupon the salt pot lid fell off causing salt to scatter all over her meal. The staff removed the meal and the meal with the blue cheese sauce, they were later replaced but by then everyone else had finished. One of the mains was fish in batter, again it was very badly overfried and looked and tasted burnt. We decided not to risk deserts although the staff did bring a brownie with ice cream for the birthday girl. A baileys coffee was ordered, it arrived disguised as a latte and had been thoroughly stirred in with the cream! We gave up. These points were discussed with the young staff members who stated they would tell the management. We certainly wont be returning there and it was a real shame that we entrusted them with a special family event. Definitely not recommended.

I visited at lunch time to celebrate a friends significant birthday. The booking procedure was fine, one friend was in a wheelchair and we were given a great table with plenty of room, so far so good. We had to go looking for menus then ask to place our order, the food was fine and we didn’t have to wait to long before we were served, waited a while for our main course again the food was okay. We sat with our finished plates in front of us for an hour, no one asked if we had had a good meal, if we wanted a pudding, coffee or another drink. I kept trying to catch a member of staff’s eye to ask for the bill, this took about a quarter of an hour and then repeated the procedure to pay. Such a pity a pleasant lunch spoilt by very indifferent service, the staff never looked round as they went to the bar area to see if tables needed clearing or customers wanted help, in our case they missed the opportunity to increase takings as we would have liked another drink and a coffee.

Family of 6 called in early Saturday evening clearly before it got busy. Pleased to say that food was still as good as our last visit and the service matched it. Will call again.

Lovely setting , good service , so decided to sit outside as weather glorious , fast service ordered a cheeky Chardonnay very nice , place food order at the bar , ultimate navigation burger and chilli cheese jacket potato , so great location food good not exceptional , price and food respective of area so the ultimate Navigation burger was delish until we found a bone ( apparently chicken Breast no mention of bones) waitress expressed apologies but fact someone could on choked. And an apology to say we try to ensure no bone , this gives me no assurance at all . So plus side good food standard pub grub ( minus the bones ) not to shabby will try 1 more time. Good price point waitress did not resolve the bone in the chicken beast but apologised and sated they try there hardest to make sue it’s bone free, now am no chef , but breast of chicken should have no bones any credible chef would know this . Over all I’d give it another go

Stopped for an early evening pub meal. Warm welcome, pleasant staff, good food and a wide range of drinks. Large pleasant outside area. All in all, very pleasant. Nothing to complain about. The menu is fairly standard pub fayre but there were some interesting sounding "specials".

We were looking for a place to go for breakfast on a Bank Holiday Monday in the local area.

Had a lovely birthday meal here. Very pleasant atmosphere, helpful and friendly staff, decent range of food options at reasonable prices - would definitely recommend. We ate inside, but there is a grass area with tables and a patio area outside (though not sure if they serve food outside).

Took family out for birthday lunch mid week. Been in before after a walk for burger and a pint. Wonderful food at reasonable price, very pleasant service. Lamb special delicious. Definitely be going again

Went here for Sunday lunch with friends I ordered the Ploughmans lunch and the wife ordered fish and chips.

Came for Sunday lunch with the family, great service, lovely staff, pepper mushroom starter delicious, all other starters were great. Five of us had roast beef and one had a mixed grill which they said was lovely. Everything about the roast beef dinner was fine apart from the roast beef. I personally had 3 tiny pieces which were dry and over cooked. The rest of my family were all of the same opinion.Slightly disappointed as I have never had a bad meal here before. Will definitely be back as this is a lovely pub and I’m sure this was just a one off.

We recently had a very enjoyable meal at the Great Northern. The food was excellent and the staff were all very pleasant and attentive. What more can you ask for? We will definitely go back.

I definitely can’t go as far as to say we had a ‘good’ meal. It was OK. We ate it. Very similar to chain pubs. You know the drill...lots of evidence of a chef who doesn’t try to conceal the fact that they’ve crusted and microwaved the food to within an inch of its life.

We have recently had a flood at our house and found ourselves needing a place to stay for 8 nights.

Popped in on the off chance after a local walk and was welcomed and our party of four were slotted in before a busy evening service, We were warned in advance that the table was needed fora reservation later but never felt pressurised to hurry our meal or drinks.The menu has a good range of dishes - pub grub but sometimes with a twist and a small specials board. All four found our food to be excellent and the staff were beyond helpful and pleasant - not even batting an eye when one of our party asked for his steak to be served 'burnt' (the cardinal sin to most establishments.) Would thoroughly recommend but would book next time as the restaurant got quite busy by the end of our stay

Great venue for casual meal with friends. This occasion it was a Monday evening and quieter than usual, but still essential to book. Reasonably priced typical pub food but well cooked. Generous portions. Staff friendly and attentive when necessary. Happy to recommend.

Visited for a combined Mothers Day & Birthday meal on Sunday lunchtime. Table for 5. First impressions were very good with light and airy rooms. Our food and service throughout were excellent. We will return. Well recommended.

Eleven of us had a Saturday evening meal here for Mother’s Day. On booking we later ordered our dishes as requested. The restaurant was very busy and the staff were coping very well. We had various dishes and everyone enjoyed their choice of dish. The quality and portions were very good and well presented. It seems that for peak times,to guarantee a table you need to book. On our experience here I fully recommend this restaurant.

A popular chain pub, serving chain pub food. Well positioned & staffed by a friendly crew. The mixed grill was humongous. They packed up out left over meat to take home & it fed the dog for days. All five of us enjoyed what we ate. Good pub for families. Rather noisy if you want intimate dining.
