If you want good food, a good atmosphere, and to be treated like a customer, then get in the car and go somewhere else. This place is a throwback from the 70’s, with rude staff, poor facilitates, and dated look altogether. The only people that ever go here are the “natives”, and that’s because fly never strays too far from the turd

We have been going here for over 30 years. The food is always of a high quality and the service of the staff can always be relied on. They do a set price meal sun-Thurs for around 15.95 and you can order as many items as you like which are freshly cooked. I would highly recommend this for families, couples or an event.

Went to the great hing Kong for a birthday on 15th February and must say from the minute we walked in we was made very welcome, by Micky and the bar staff, food was top class piping hot and served with a friendly smile, music was good, will be going back 👍 please take notice of this review.

Had a great night celebrating my wife’s birthday with friends at the great Hong Kong restaurant last night.The food was absolutely fantastic and the staff were very pleasant. The dj played some great tunes aswell. Would highly recommend and we will be returning.

I was a bit worried about visiting this restaurant after reading some of the reviews on here. However I was visiting with 3 friends who had been before several times with no problems so was happy to give it a go.Yes dated inside and out but don't see this as very important as long as the food is ok.Both our waiter and waitress were perfectly accommodating, helpful and friendly enough. I recognised the waiter from his description on various reviews where he was described as rude and unhelpful. Nothing wrong with the guy, perfectly friendly and happy to take photos for us. The food was £15.95 per person for as much as you could eat and cooked freshly when ordered. Drinks not expensive. Food perfectly fine, what's not to like?

Went for birthday party and we won’t be back anytime soon. Staff need to do a course on customer service. Especially old guy with grey hair. When the food eventually arrived it was terrible. In fact pretty much inedible. When we told the waiter that part of the meal was missing he was very rude and told us to wait because he hadn’t finished yet. The rest of the meal never came!! Not that it would probably have been edible either. We asked for the bill 3 times and still had to chase them up again. I will add that the bar staff were very nice and friendly but sadly that’s all it has got. All in all worst Chinese food I’ve ever eaten

Should have realised when the place was empty that this wasn't going to go well. Place is very dated which will put some off immediately (not me, I love an underdog!).Unfortunately though the food is simply not nice.Chicken noodle soup was tasteless. Anything else containing chicken was slimy and horrible with the meat smelling funny. Beef was disgusting.Chow mein was ok, hence the two stars.It's a shame as I recall going here years ago for work Xmas parties but I'm afraid the harsh reality is this is not a nice restaurant. Not particularly cheap either and waiting staff sat at the back of the restaurant watching videos on their phones.Avoid.

Really nice food good value for money friendly service and a great time to be had by all, can't wait to return again.

We had a table of 13. We had a great night. Food was lovely and hot. Staff were friendly. Only thing is yes it's dated but it was fun. The DJ. Please change him, started late and pretty much only played 1980s Madonna. We had cards to write down what we wanted to hear. None was played. Keep up with the times pls.Overall will go again.

Arrived about 20:30 on a Thursday. As expected were not many people in. My friend and I were shown to our seat by 'Micky' Always a gentleman...... Buffet style eats from a menu.... All you can eat (BUT don't order it and not eat it !!!). Cooked as requested. Hot great taste. By eating from Sunday to Thursday Restaurant is very quiet, and you get great one to one service! Also great for Takeaways....

The food was very basic , bland and Luke warm (even with the heated plates ) the staff were the most miserable group of people I had ever met (especially the guy with glasses) the only saving grace was having a dance and a giggle on the dance floorApart from that the decor was so outdated and for me it’s a no...won’t be going back there again.

What can I say . What a fantastic evening. There was 24 of us on 2 tables & from start to finish everything was excellent . Service was as expected. Food lovely and plenty of it. DJ & music was just as I thought it would be excellent . What a great evening. A big thank you to you all who worked that night. Anyone who hasn’t been to this Resturant go there, you won’t be disappointed

Would give zero stars if could. Out of date beer by 5 years, staff rude, don’t take your order till about 2 hours after you’ve sat down. Raw chicken served just awful!

Things haven't changed here for many years. It's a great night if you're with the right company. The cheesy dance floor and music is what makes this place! Food not great, but ok for the cost.

We have been going to this restaurant since the early 80's and we have always had a great night, last nights visit was no exemption,service was excellent, food was great, hot and fresh, and the dj did a fantastic job keeping everyone dancing to the early hours

Took a decent sized party here for an Xmas do, and it was really really bad. Old guy there with the glasses was so rude it was shocking. The food wasn't up to much either. We all left as soon as we could and went for drinks at the pub round the corner.

Tasteless chicken, decent beef at best, loud music, and expensive for subpar food. Avoid this place! Manager rudely said kids shouldn't be brought to a disco restaurant when there is plenty of kids around. Staff almost got into a fist fight with customers.

Went there with a decent sized group. Food is like salty cardboard. Service terrible, they just seemed like they couldn't be bothered to be there. I wish I hadn't bothered either. Kitchen seemed to be able to only cook two things at once before getting overwhelmed. The 'disco' was a joke that nobody found funny.

Took my staff here for our Christmas meal . There was 10 of us and we was the only 10 people in the whole restaurant .

Great food, service was a bit slower than usual but it was a friday night and very busy. Staff really helpful.

Always get a great welcome here. We te d to go Sunday to Thursday as it is nice and quiet. Personal service with a smile. The only wait is for the food to be cooked to order. Then it comes out in a timely manner. The secret is not to order a lot as you can always order more on the buffet menu. £16 each and you get a little change, however you purchase any drinks as extra. Great meal.... If you want to have a party then Friday and Saturday is for you...

The Great Hong Kong is a funny place, it is very outdated and needs a refurbish but the old decor doesn't offend and just adds to the ambiance. I went with 40 other people for my 50th birthday celebration and had a ball as did everyone who attended.

Went here for a family get together, and having lived in the area for a few years, I have deliberately avoided the place as it looks very grotty from the outside.

The Great Kong Sunday buffet is brilliant value for money. The food is just what I would order, piping hot and plentiful. Yes the decor is dated bit this adds to the atmosphere. There is no pressure to leave, plates are cleared regularly. A great place for a Sunday afternoon.

Lo que un restaurante muy decepcionante. Tenía 47 clientes y terminamos comiendo 45 minutos aparte. Que decir que el servicio era pésimo era insuficiente. La comida era sosa. Si no fuera por mis clientes estar tan maravilloso mi noche hubiera sido un desastre. Los pocos empleados que tenían eran antipáticos (hecho que podrían haber sido robots) y el dj tenía una actitud demasiado. As it was Carol's birthday on December the 13th.I went to get a take away at the Great Hong Kong.The food once again was Superb!!!!.And again between 12.00pm till 14.00pm.Highly recommended.Shaky.

Fuimos un grupo grande para mis tías 60 y también llevé a los niños! No era saber qué esperar en el interior es bastante antiguo y no parece la mejor, pero nos terminamos teniendo una buena noche la comida estaba muy bien la nuestra fue que tuvimos filete de ternera estilo cantonés también teníamos plato de gambas, que era rey precioso! Otros en nuestro grupo no estaba interesado en algunos de los platos que tenían platos de carne y dijo que la carne estaba duro! El servicio estaba bien! En 930 el dj viene en música era buena todos estábamos bailando y todos nos lo pasamos una noche estupenda! Yo no diría que este es un lugar que sin ir por comida con su otra mitad, sino como un grupo de personas de todas las edades fue una buena noche! !

The place hasn't changed for years but it is still one of the best night out for a meal and dance the staff are friendly and the food is a bit overprice but it is a complete night out with a disco after.

Used to be a real nice place but was shocked on my last visit needs a real make over and staff need to be re trained food very average and drinks expensive wont be going back anytime soon

Although both the outside and interior could do with a modern make-over, the food was good value for money.There is a disco which plays cheesy music but the DJ had everyone up dancing and played all our requests.Overall, good for a family party night out but not for a quiet romantic evening.

We went to the restaurant in Saturday night with my parents. Place was very quiet at 7pm. Previous fortnight it had been heaving. The staff are attentive but not overly so. Food was very presented and cooked. Will definitely go back again. Reasonably priced.

We have held many family gatherings and parties here! The staff are amazing! There is always a fun and bubbly feel to this restaurant along with fab food! Simply brilliant!

I was very upbeat about visiting this restaurant for a family celebration of a 21st birthday party. There were 14 of us in total. However I was shocked at the prices. Every person must spend a minimum of ten pounds on food or you may choose a set menu which is a minimum of £22 per person.Now that is very overpriced indeed and if you go for the sharing option it is even more expensive and you average out with less food. My advice is to avoid the set menus as the single portions are huge. I have to mention here that the food is of good quality and the service is good too. Now then let's discuss drinks!!! A pint of coke is £3.80!!!!! Beer is £4.70. Enough said but you can imagine the amount of free tap water that was served that night and that was a general feel when visiting the bar so most people have a sober evening as did I. The dance floor is a little small but was still OK and we did dance a fair bit. I may well go back but it will be on an all you can eat buffet evening and not on a Saturday where it is not an option. After seeing some negative reviews I was tedious to give the place a taste. Saying this I am very glad I came back but leaving very ill. The food was amazing quick service if anything a little too quick but was starving so all good, however the portions were HUGE! One can't complain but I am not one for leaving any scraps, price was fair/ a bit pricey and drinks too expensive however portion size made up for this, but leaving very full and very satisfied.

Very average...have eaten here a few times over the years..if anything it has gone downhill..the food was OK but nothing special...the bill was a lot more than expected...think this was mainly because of the price of drinks.

Very expensive especially the set menus £22.50 pp sounds like you get alot but you dont you get 1 rib 1 spring roll 1 chicken skewer and 2 prawn toast. Then for the mains you get 1 small portion of each thing listed which we had to share between 5 of us. It was literally 1 piece of meat off each dish each. The food is bland. The disco is the same as 20 years ago. Would not recommend this place and will not be returning. Jades palace in wickford is much better. Lovely food and order as much as you like for £19.50 3 courses.

Well overpriced ! We ordered the set oriental feast for 5 people and it only came up with enough food for 2..... you get the same amount on each main dish as if you are ordering for 1 person..Other deal is 1 starter , 1 main , 1 desert for £20??? What a joke! Won't be back in a hurry !!Go to Jade's palace wickford instead..All you can eat with bigger menu for less than £20 plus restaurant is more update and it's all brought to your table fresh including drinks!!

Depends on what you like.... Nice quiet meal, then go Sunday to Thursday. MAD evening party type atmosphere, then Friday and Saturday nights. MUST book on these two nights. Sunday to Thursday is Eat as much as you can menu. BUT don't order it and not eat it. Very good service during the week as not very busy and can concentrate on you. Many a family do here GREAT SERVICE> GREAT FOOD. Brilliant takeaway

My family and I have been coming here for ears and honestly it just doesn't get old.Usually go midweek for the 'off the menu' buffet but went for the Sunday buffet as we hadn't done that for a while. A nice choice of dishes were available, all of which were lovely and fresh. Good service as usual which is always nice.Only negatives about this place are that the drinks can get pricey and that -since it hasn't changed much in the 20 years we've been going- it could use a bit of a revamp.

What can I say??!! The (disc jockey) dj has been there forever!! He was there on my 30th!!! I'm now 60!!! Needs revamping!! Looks old & outdated! That's the decor & dj!! Lol

We use this venue mainly for our work outings- you get a lot of food for not a lot of Money which is always good. The food is nice however I have heard from a lot of people the alcohol is watered down and has been for years! The atmosphere is nice and has a Mon - Thurs all you can eat buffet for £15.95 pp this is not valid on weekends and they have a 'set menu' and disco!

To begin with we were the only booking in that night.. A Friday night.. It said it all. It was a special event for a relatives Hen Night.Background music was poor and the DJ wasn't starting until 9:30pm. We had already been there since 7pm.Food was poor, and a few of us felt a little ill the following day. Drinks are very pricey.Once the Dj had arrived, he played some tracks, but nothing new. Mostly old school which was okay for the older generation, but one song had been on 5 times!I would suggest this place needs a good refurb to bring it back up to standards and possibly some more custom.Staff were slightly rude and didn't accommodate error on their behalf.Won't be visiting anytime soon.

What a brilliant night! We went here for a night out and what a great night it was! You can't beat the cheesy music and great food! A define must for Christmas! The set menus make life easier when ordering for a large group. And the bar sells pretty much everything you could want on a might out.

Went for work Christmas meal. Rang ahead to check can cater for gluten-free diet and was told plenty of options. However spent ages trying to explain to waitress on the night what gluten-free was and just kept being offered omelette and chips! Service poor, venue very shabby, won't be returning!

The food was good and the service was quick you go to the bar for drinks separately which was suitable for us but may not be for everyone, also have a dj taking requests so a great service all round.

The food tasted alright, but very over priced for what it is, especially the dinks. It cost me £4.90 for half a black current and soda and a shot of vodka.

The food was average, not the best Chinese I have ever had nor is it the best in Stanford. For a gathering the atmosphere is good, the music cheesy along with a dance floor for you to work off the Chinese you have just eaten, however, as for the staff they are friendly and accommodating. Would I choose to eat here? No But it's by no means the worst I've ever had.

Bit hard to find out basic info on the place online like opening times etc so did it the old fashioned way and called them!When we turned up they were doing a buffet which had a good selection of about 20 different dishes.Most of them where kept well heated,there were a few that were luke warm as they were just kept on plate's(doesn't bother me but some people it may) but still tasted good and fresh. No groggy too much msg feeling afterwards which for us is a big plus. Service was freindly and efficient,prices were reasonable.Would definitely recommend and will be back again.

Bought two dishes from their frankly unexciting menu. Ordered a dish with prawn scallops and abalone it was a generous selection of the seafood but the sauce was more than a little dull to be honest.Staff were welcoming and helpful but sadly not exciting food. Spring rolls were soggy and boringly flavoured

For the many many years I've been going to The Great Hong Kong I've never had a bad time there. Service is always good, food always good. And if you are fortunate to be there when the disco is on even better. Fabulous all rounder. Plan to go time after time for special celebrations. have already booked my works Christmas do there for this year. And cannot wait.

Gone here for a hen do, the food was extremely over priced and I asked for extra sauce on my pork balls to which I was unexpectedly charged for this, no waiter service what so ever and the bar was always packed! The place looks like it hasn't been decorated since the 70s!! I would never come here again if you paid me!

Attended here with work friends to celebrate a friend's 50th. There were 30 odd of us, so it was a logistical nightmare, but while we turned up at varying times and were a little unruly, the staff at The Great Hong Kong were exceptional and dealt with it all in their stride. We were seated on 3 tables, but we had about 5 waiters. They took orders a table at a time and took names based on who you wanted to order with and subsequently pay with! This meant I was able to set up a tab at the bar and then pay my food and drink bill separately. Now I'm no skin flint, but it was lovely not squabbling over the extra drinks or rice no one else wants to claim. I paid for what my partner and I had with out any hidden extras. A definite nice touch! Not only was this to my liking, but so was the price. Meals and extras for two and drinks all around £40. The food didn't disappoint at all either. The time between ordering was so short and given the number of us this was also a pleasant surprise. Our order included bean curd in black bean sauce and sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style, rice to share, prawn crackers and vegetarian seaweed (they have two versions, so if you're veggie be aware and make it clear you want the veg one). Everything was incredibly tasty and the portions were vast! I'd never been before, but I'll definitely go back!

I visited the Great Hong Kong restaurant on a Monday evening with 5 others including my Mother. We were greeted at the door taken to the table and asked if we wanted a drink. Included in out party were 2 who needed to be gluten free. The menu is a tick sheet which wasn't explained to us, however, the others in the party already knew what to do. The food was cooked to order, and they cooked rice noodles and chicken for the gluten free people. The waiter was very helpful and pointed out what they could and couldn't have. The main meals were brought up with hot plates to keep it warm. Food was good, and there was plenty of it. The one down side was the choice of sweet, which was limited to ice cream style. I chose to have a baked alaska, which was not right, it had no merangue on the top it was a grainy swirl of just cooked merangue and the ice cream inside was rock hard and tasteless, and for £5.50 was not worth it. I would return to the Great Hong Hong, but skip the sweet, however, the banana split was nice. They do not play music there, but if you have good company and conversation, its not a problem.

The Great Hong Kong is the sort of place that everyone in the area has either been to or knows about. Instead of the buffet which the previous owners used to do there is now a tick sheet from which you can pick as much as you like and ask for more if it is needed. Being cooked fresh is far better. I went on a Wednesday and a Sunday recently with family members including a 6 year old. For him it was half price. The food was good.Not a lot has been done to either the décor or the exterior of the property in all the 26 years that I have been there, on and off. It may be time for a revamp !On Fridays and Saturdays, I believe , the tick sheets don't operate. There is probably a disco as there is a dance floor in the centre.

I have never written a review before but I actually can't resist and let anyone else go through the meal we have just had! Food was awful and no flavour, there was only 2 tables on a Saturday night so no atmosphere whatsoever, staff were shocking and never asked us if we wanted a drink or asked us how the terrible overpriced meal was! Will not be going back and will advise you not to! P.s the outside could do with a lick of paint as well!

Food very good, priced fair too, so 10/10 on that one, however, the premises is a bit dated, still very 80's, bit like the cheesey Dj set up, come to that I think the Dj should have retired in the 80's. Bit tacky some nights as it does attract groups / parties etc.

Having visited on several occasions on weeknight and lunch times we have never had a bad experience. The food is good and served on heated trays to prevent yhe food getting cold. The lunchtime menu is reasonable around £5 for 3 courses and evenings £13.95 for eat all you want. The staff are friendly and dont hassle like at some other places. Would recommend.

Went here on a Friday night. Food was good, service was great and the atmosphere was good too. Disco started around 10pm - very cheesy but good fun. All in all an enjoyable experience.

I'm a pretty fussy person with fairly high standards, been quite a few times with family and I really have a great time there. Good atmosphere, staff lovely, food is good for Chinese buffet. It's not a top notch restaurant but it's great for a good night out and letting your hair down. Enjoy the DJ's music, varied choice nice little dance floor. Feel sad when I see poor reviews. It's not a romantic venue so don't go there on sat night expecting a quiet evening, take your friends and family and have a great night! Enjoy!

The decoration of this place is around 30 years old, it has two mini bridges which lead to the light up dance floor.Staff seem friendly enough and the food is average. It is an experience to say the least.

Have been to the GHK in stanford on many occasions (albiet most of them some years ago!). however on a visit some months back, we noticed a few extra drinks on the bill, and I mean £40 worth. When quizzed, of course the waiteress siad we had them, and with no way to prove we paid, begrungingly.Had been invited there again this weekend . Due to previous experiance I warned the party. We decided to PAY for all the drinks seperately and when they were delivered. the food, as always was great, the atmosphere, great, DJ (well,,, same old same old needsto change his playlist!).... but come the end of the night, we were handed the bill. Food - resonably priced , no arguement, however there were 3... yes 3 rounds of drinks on there, totallying over £70 !!!Now, knowing we had paid directly (and made a point of it!) we approached the wiateress, who of course said she had delivered the drinks and not paid for them. We paid for EVERY round !!!! So, wether she or a collegue who took the money made the "mistake" I do not know. However after a long winded discussion, the manager agreed to "let us off" of these drinks....... which we had alreayd paid for - how kind !needless to say, despite the good food and general atmosphere (its always been a good place) I will not be going again, and will mention this episode to all my friends to prevent the same.Cant know the place for food and atompshere, but check your bill, .Our night was ruined by this, uncalled for, unneeded ...basically theft !

Went here for my friends birthday and have been before, had a great meal that was reasonable priced and then spent the evening dancing the night away. We ended up on the dance floor mingling with the other tables and having a really good time, staff are friendly and attentive, drinks priced are ok and you cant beat the atmosphere.

The food and service here is superb. We have used the Gt Hong Kong for many years, and the quality of the food never deteriorates. Always made to feel welcome even on busy weekends when the place is usually full

We frequently visit this restaurant and have NEVER had a bad meal yet. Monday to Thursday is £13.95 and you get a 'tick' menu which you can have absolutely what you want.. Everything they serve is well presented and so tastey, ooer I could eat it right now!!!! the staff dont rush you or bother you unless you want them to. If you go on a Friday or Saturday night its different, you order individual dishes from the menu. You have a DJ and dance floor, which is either great to join in and boogie or do a bit of people watching. These nights are great for parties and you have to book as they get packed. The decor is to be desired though, although I like it as its like going back to the 70's, but its clean.I will be going back soon and I suggest you do to as you wont be let down x
