Our first visit since the new owners took over and the food was very good indeed. Definitely a cut above pub grub and the price did reflect this. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and the price was fair when you consider the expertise that was going on in the kitchen. We will be going back but I have one small niggle about doing so and it has to be said. The lady who owns it was extremely aggressive and unfriendly, not a good look when you are trying to encourage clientele . Sort yourself out madam and try to emulate the professionalism of your chef. I see others have also commented on your manner. Once you get over your need to fight your customers I am sure you will attract more people to keep your wonderful chef busy. I would have scored you five, not four if you hadn't made us feel a bit like victims instead of welcome guests.

What a find, I could have copied a few other reviews. Ambience just right, lovely feel to the pub, had a couple of beers at lunchtime and decided to book for dinner. 8 of us. It was fantastic, just fantastic. We eat out a lot, this was good value and the service and quality of food deserved a heftier bill. We will be back, live in West Wirral, but we will be back.. Keep it up guy's.

We have been to the golden lion on numerous occasions for many years but never experienced what we did today! We met with friends this evening, accompanied by their 2 children and our 2 children. When we walked in our friends were already seated, I sat our children down (they all started to play uno) went to the bar where the lady serving started to tut and constantly give evil stares at our table. When I said we’re leaving I feel very uncomfortable here she said ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you over the noise’ ( yet somehow still knew my order) now I would be the first to tell my children off if they were being a nuscience or too loud but they really were not, I was actually thinking they were doing very well being out together as they hadn’t seen each other in a while and especially as one can become very loud due to autism and being partially deaf, (when she does this we always leave the room and go outside so she can calm down, and to not upset other people) I for one have definitely encountered louder adults (especially at pubs). She was most unwelcoming! And I felt extremely awkward being here. I have never had this experience here in the past! However, we then went down the road to the halfway house where we spent a few hundred pounds and had a wonderful welcoming experience, with one lady commenting on how well behaved the children were! So I guess it’s a loss to them! A lot of people like child free locations and this place is perfect! but for families i would definitely avoid.

Not family friendly at all. I’ve visited before and loved it (before it closed). But we went to golden lion tonight to meet with friends, we arrived and my children stood on the lower part of the bar stools as they couldn’t see over the bar, I understand this is unsafe so asked them myself to get to down and the barmaid told them at the same time in a rather unpleasant tone. I did not appreciate this at all. My son has learning difficulties and struggles to sit still, he was calmly walking across the room and the lady came over to him and told him to go sit down, again in a not nice way (especially to a 7 year old). Once seated, our friends arrived with their two children and the bar lady repeatedly gave us horrible looks and tutted at the children (who were being very well behaved). When challenged about how the pub is advertised as a family friendly place, we were told it is family friendly by this bar maid, it definitely did not feel like a family friendly environment at all. We felt very uncomfortable and unwelcomed. Won’t be coming back. I do recommend the halfway house though as we went there instead and felt very welcomed.

Well presented dishes, and v v hot. I did not like the sauce around the salmon, but I am sure some people do. Past the pub garden they have a camping, but it was above my budget as a solo traveller, but I am sure it would suit any with a bigger group/ family or a larger budget per/pitch/night. The blue hydrangeas were just magnificent in the car park!

Been coming to the GL for last 8 years whilst holidaying. Its a lovely, local pub with great views. Been recently taken over, bit smarter now, good beers and bar offering and it is worth a visit. BUT! The food menu is simple pub grub - lasagne, ham egg & chips, bangers and mash - its tasty, but averaging £18 a meal its got to be better…. with Spoons & Beefeater do it better and cheaper….

We stayed for 3 nights over the weekend. 21 pitches on site, all with electric hookups. Nice walks around the the Lake. Food in pub was cracking. Lovely roast beef, would recommend. Now, I believe it was only taken over in May 2024, and it needs some maintenance doing. There's no lighting when walking down to the showers and toilets. So make sure you have a torch with you. Both the showers and toilets need work doing to them.

As locals living within walking distance we won't go there again. £7.00 plus for a glass of wine is outrageous. We are not cheapskates but sometimes, more often than not, cheaper wines are better than the more expensive. There is no justification for charging that amount for a few sips of wine. This pub could really blossom, especially in the winter when the tourists have all gone if it lowered their alcohol prices. I do not know how they will survive the winter unless they're going to close down and go off to warmer climates with the money they've conned the visitors out of.

Great location 2 minute walk from camp (they actually have their own camping too). Greeted by friendly staff and given table over looking lake and garden (most are to be fair). Menu was typical pub grub and absolutely delicious. Food was served hot and fresh with no delay. Lasagne chips and salad followed by waffle maple syrup and ice cream and not a moment of guilt as had been on the reservoir expelling lots of energy all day! When I looked at the menu online I thought it was a little ordinary but having visited I have to say the quality of everything from starters to sweet was excellent. All home cooked and 9/10, the beef pie was to die for, the pork belly soft and full of flavour, and a rich and soft lasagne. Normally I'm very wary of sweets because 95% of the time their shop bought but not in this case, the eton mess you could see was made on site and very tasty, the two treacle sponge pudding just like me mum made and the profiteroles very good. The service was friendly and attentive without overpowering so all in all a very reasonable and very enjoyable evening.

Stopped here for an evening meal, sadly there was limited drafts on so couldnt get a pint of cider on draft. Service was very slow, there was just one gent and woman maning tables, taking orders, manning the bar, serving the food and collecting the plates. So meant we were often sat waiting. I believe the pub had recently been taken over and renovations had been under way so they were operating a small condensed menu, which wasn't advised to us when we booked our table, however the food was great and I suspect when all this is ironed out it's going to be a great place to eat and drink as they have a fab beer garden and a good chef in the kitchen!

Beautiful countryside pub by a small road near Stithians reservoir and lakeake which you can see from the restaurant. The order took a while as everyone arrived at the same time but they were very well organised and we even had to wait, but we felt comfortable and it was worth it. When the food arrived we were surprised for the beauty of the plates and the yummy food. We really enjoyed having dinner here and sharing some time talking with the waitress as he was very gentle and polite. The pub has a very nice decoration, it is clean and they play a nice music also. Where to start. When we told people we were having our wedding reception at a pub, we got some mixed looks. But the Golden Lion in Stithians isn't 'just a pub.' Nestled into some beautifully kept tiered gardens, decorated with bunting and lights, and overlooking Stithians Lake, it is the perfect setting for a celebration and scenery for some incredible photos day and night. The interior has a quaint blend of cosy, cottage-esqe warmth with the fireplace and stone walls leading to a modern, fresh dinning area, well lit by the incredible panoramic view across the gardens and lake (a stunning backdrop to our bride and groom table). The food was all delicious, many of our guests saying it was the best nut roast they'd ever had. The golden lion even have their own veg patch, taking locally sourced to another level. Emma even grew us some pumpkins herself when she found out we were struggling to find some. An incredible surprise. We stayed the week in their adjoing cottage. To say we didn't want to leave is an understatement. Again the perfect blend of cosy cottage, but well lit (natural light), modern luxuries and a stunning fireplace for when the nights are more chilly. There is a lovely morning view from the upstairs of the sunrise over the lake. Emma and the team were fantastic both on the day and leading up to it, with Emma having to deal with all our questions, requests and changes throughtout the year. As an added bonus we had the delight of being ferried from our ceremony to reception in a 1934 BSA vintage car, owned by Dave (Emma's husband). Dave is so lovely and you can tell he is so proud of getting this fantastic car up and running, having been passed down to him from his father. It was also great to hear the history of the car and about all the little (and not so little) bits Dave has had to do to fix the car and get it into the beautiful condition its in. My friend ordered a well done steak ciabatta. However, when she started to cut it, it was apparent that it was rare inside, also it was chewy. When asked by a waitress if we were happy she showed here the steak. Her reply was ‘ I did ask for it well done’ & walked off. Later on paying we were asked again about our meals by another waitress & I explained about my friends meal once again . Her reply was ‘ well he is only an apprentice’ At no time was a replacement offered or any deduction in price , so I paid up fully even stupidly including a tip . We went with the idea of having a lovely meal while on holiday. We booked a table online for 7.30pm. Not a good start to the evening, We arrived at the restaurant to find the car park full of joggers/runners who had filled the car park and were milling about the carpark. We toured around the area and not able to park, telephoned the restaurant to say we were cancelling our table explaining the situation We were told the runners would be eating in the pub but n a other toom and not till 8pm. We had booked the restaurant and said we didn't fancy sharing our meal with some sweaty individuals. We were assured they would not be in the same area. We were then told to utilise the campsite pitch. When we returned to the caroark we then found a space. We were asked for our drinks option before we sat down....a little unusual. Our meal arrived, I ordered the breaded casement, although very pleasant could have been a lot hotter I mentioned this to the proprietor At about 8pm the runners arrived following their run,, walking through the restaurant to their venue space, but the air of body odour was very unpleasant. It was very evident at our table, tucked in a corner- quite away from the bar. Although they did go into their eating area, they stood at the bar ordering drinks in their sweaty state. We decided not to have a dessert, then paid the bill and left. What a shame, probably a good place to eat normally but most certainly not on 'runners night'

What a fantastic gastro pub. The venue and views are fabulous, with amazing food and excellent service. It's rare to find all these thing in one place these days. The homemade desserts were so original, well presented and tasty, well worth the visit on their own. Loved it.

We asked if we could have plain prawns on a mixed salad as one of us cannot have any oils or dressing containing oil. We also asked if the steak could be grilled so that again no oils or fats were used to cook the steak. We were initially told there would not be a problem with the prawn starter, that proved not true. We were also told the kitchen could not cook the steak without oils or fats because the griddle was already oiled. How much effort does it take to wipe the griddle or to grill a steak. We cancelled our order and went elsewhere

We ate here 3 out of 4 days we were staying on the campsite at the rear of the pub. Excellent food reasonably priced served by happy, friendly, attentive staff. Premises dog friendly, great selection of beers/ales, even the wine fairly priced. Sat in the lovely garden one lunchtime dodging the heavy showers, tasty steak & wine one evening followed by the Beatles (Not) lol. Then after a lovely walk Sunday, back for a delicious roast which was really good. Recommended we will be back.

Another fab visit . We visit every year on holiday. Food and service is spot on and location is lovely. It’s a hidden gem that we stumbled across one year and now it’s somewhere we will head to every year. Today was a bit drizzly but we enjoyed some card games before the food arrived .

Not very impressed really , no beef left for the a roast , no yorkshire puddings left , the waitress said they had no roast pototoes left as they had ran out , 5 minutes later they found a large bowl of roast potatoes but they were like concrete and the veg had gone cold by this time, 2 of my family members had long hairs in their food . We wont be rushing back there in a hurry sorry guys , they did give us 20% discount at the till though , im not sure that they were that bothered by the excuses we were given 🤷‍♂️

This is a good find and as locals we like to try new places. We wanted a pub that takes dogs and has a garden as the weather was wonderful. This does that, the gardens are lovely, dog, family friendly. Now the food - wow amazing. I had a chicken fajitas and the other people had a ploughman’s. We all loved the food and pub. Said we would definitely be back. My husband and I do love a roast dinner and I saw they do roast lunches here on a Sunday. We will be back to try that. Thanks so much.

We took our family to Sunday lunch today. We’ve been many times before and this was the first time for some of the family. Our two year old guest has severe allergies which we discussed with the young waitress. The waitress took notes and went to see the chef, returning with comprehensive advice about the Sunday lunch menu. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch safe in the knowledge that our little boy would be ok. A special thank you to the waitress and everyone in the Golden Lion.

We needed somewhere to eat at short notice and thought we would give the Golden Lion a try. My goodness me, weren't we glad we did! A lovely, relaxed pub but with amazing service and attention to detail. The staff were welcoming and friendly, with excellent and speedy service. The attention to detail and high standards were very evident. The food was delicious, beautifully cooked and plenty of it! There was a small issue that was rectified straightaway - nothing was too much trouble. I was going to say that if you are in the area, be sure to call in but to be honest this pub is worth driving to from a distance. Thank you for a wonderful meal and we can't recommend the Golden Lion highly enough.

Nice environment, friendly helpful staff. We have had better food there 5 year back, now they seem stuck on their Covid menu from the freezer! The specials were well cooked but only a choice of two. Would I go again, only if someone else was paying or I was camping there with little other choice!

Breakfast was massive AND every item on our plates were all HOT. So often now, dining out, your meal turns up and 90% of it is lukewarm or cold! Not here! It was all hot and delicious 😋🤤 Thoroughly recommend this establishment for a hot, filling, good value for money, breakfast!! 😉

Found this delightful upstairs cafe by chance and had some of the best vegetarian food for a long time. We were made very welcome and chose the hummus bowl and roasted veg toasted sandwich. Both were excellent and very filling.

I've only ever called in for a beer but no complaints so far and staff are nice too. There's a big beer garden which is very useful for the kids and dogs.

The ice creams here are beautiful! Really generous portions and are very well presented. The customer service we received was outstanding, my daughter had a massive meltdown (ASD) and they were nothing but supportive, understanding and helpful. We'd had a very tough day today with meltdowns galore and this one was by far the worst of the day yet I never felt alone or judged. People like you make the biggest difference and I am so very grateful for you going out of your way to help and care. Thank you x
