We have loved the golden lion for a long time. Unfortunately, recently, we have found the customer service somewhat lacking. The food was lovely, and the waiting on/ bar staff were pleasant. However, there is one lady who is very blunt verging on rude. I don't think she means to be, but that's how she comes across. I would hate to see her demeanour push customers away.

Took a group of 48 people here, for a celebratory dinner for a local male voice choir. From the initial contact, through to the final goodbye, the experience was just superb. You know the kitchen is on top of its game when every plate coming out was hot, perfectly cooked, and a very generous portion size. I heard nothing but compliments from all the diners, and would have no hesitation in recommending The Golden Lion to anyone looking for somewhere in a wonderful location, with excellent food.

Everything the chef cooks is all done the day before they microwave pretty much everything. The beef and the vegetables and the burgers also the chicken. I was sitting by the fire looked over my shoulder looking at the chefs and the kp the kp was working harder than the actual chef . Just be careful for what you buy in there as they can be rude about what people want to order. Our first visit since the new owners took over and the food was very good indeed. Definitely a cut above pub grub and the price did reflect this. Not cheap but you get what you pay for and the price was fair when you consider the expertise that was going on in the kitchen. We will be going back but I have one small niggle about doing so and it has to be said. The lady who owns it was extremely aggressive and unfriendly, not a good look when you are trying to encourage clientele . Sort yourself out madam and try to emulate the professionalism of your chef. I see others have also commented on your manner. Once you get over your need to fight your customers I am sure you will attract more people to keep your wonderful chef busy. I would have scored you five, not four if you hadn't made us feel a bit like victims instead of welcome guests.

We have been to the golden lion on numerous occasions for many years but never experienced what we did today! We met with friends this evening, accompanied by their 2 children and our 2 children. When we walked in our friends were already seated, I sat our children down (they all started to play uno) went to the bar where the lady serving started to tut and constantly give evil stares at our table. When I said we’re leaving I feel very uncomfortable here she said ‘I’m sorry I couldn’t hear you over the noise’ ( yet somehow still knew my order) now I would be the first to tell my children off if they were being a nuscience or too loud but they really were not, I was actually thinking they were doing very well being out together as they hadn’t seen each other in a while and especially as one can become very loud due to autism and being partially deaf, (when she does this we always leave the room and go outside so she can calm down, and to not upset other people) I for one have definitely encountered louder adults (especially at pubs). She was most unwelcoming! And I felt extremely awkward being here. I have never had this experience here in the past! However, we then went down the road to the halfway house where we spent a few hundred pounds and had a wonderful welcoming experience, with one lady commenting on how well behaved the children were! So I guess it’s a loss to them! A lot of people like child free locations and this place is perfect! but for families i would definitely avoid.

Not family friendly at all. I’ve visited before and loved it (before it closed). But we went to golden lion tonight to meet with friends, we arrived and my children stood on the lower part of the bar stools as they couldn’t see over the bar, I understand this is unsafe so asked them myself to get to down and the barmaid told them at the same time in a rather unpleasant tone. I did not appreciate this at all. My son has learning difficulties and struggles to sit still, he was calmly walking across the room and the lady came over to him and told him to go sit down, again in a not nice way (especially to a 7 year old). Once seated, our friends arrived with their two children and the bar lady repeatedly gave us horrible looks and tutted at the children (who were being very well behaved). When challenged about how the pub is advertised as a family friendly place, we were told it is family friendly by this bar maid, it definitely did not feel like a family friendly environment at all. We felt very uncomfortable and unwelcomed. Won’t be coming back. I do recommend the halfway house though as we went there instead and felt very welcomed.

As locals living within walking distance we won't go there again. £7.00 plus for a glass of wine is outrageous. We are not cheapskates but sometimes, more often than not, cheaper wines are better than the more expensive. There is no justification for charging that amount for a few sips of wine. This pub could really blossom, especially in the winter when the tourists have all gone if it lowered their alcohol prices. I do not know how they will survive the winter unless they're going to close down and go off to warmer climates with the money they've conned the visitors out of.

When I looked at the menu online I thought it was a little ordinary but having visited I have to say the quality of everything from starters to sweet was excellent. All home cooked and 9/10, the beef pie was to die for, the pork belly soft and full of flavour, and a rich and soft lasagne. Normally I'm very wary of sweets because 95% of the time their shop bought but not in this case, the eton mess you could see was made on site and very tasty, the two treacle sponge pudding just like me mum made and the profiteroles very good. The service was friendly and attentive without overpowering so all in all a very reasonable and very enjoyable evening.

Service was very slow, there was just one gent and woman maning tables, taking orders, manning the bar, serving the food and collecting the plates. So meant we were often sat waiting. I believe the pub had recently been taken over and renovations had been under way so they were operating a small condensed menu, which wasn't advised to us when we booked our table, however the food was great and I suspect when all this is ironed out it's going to be a great place to eat and drink as they have a fab beer garden and a good chef in the kitchen!

The breakfast was amazing, fresh produce, and cooked beautifully. Everyone was very polite and very good service. We will definitely be back. Thank you so much. Charlotte xxx 😘

We always have one of our holiday meals here when stopping at Caddys Corner. We have never been disappointed. The food is amazing every time, and they always look after you with fabulous service. The portion sizes are very generous! See you next time we visit Cornwall 🙂

1/10/2023 Booked in for a roast dinner 2 x large for 2 adults , ordered a pint of Guiness sat down waited 40 mins for meal to arrive , eventually the meal came out on the small side no bigger than a childs portion. Tucked into first mouthful and was cold not even luke warm as was the rest of the meal . I spoke to waiter politely and raised my concerns ststing the meal was cold , he told the owner who came over irate with us thinking we spoke out of turn , we simply highlighted the issues . She didnt even tried to put the situation right . She certainly shouldn't be in the hospitality sector if thats her attitude towards her customers . I give this Pub an zero rating ,avoid at all costs as you'll gauranteed to be disappointed in your experience of dining here !!!!

Visited this pub in September. Found the boss very rude and unwelcoming ! She was extremely offish !! Food was very average and underwhelming and overpriced ! We won't be coming back . Plenty of other pubs nearby that appreciate their customers!!

We're vegans and although the menu was limited for us, what there was was delicious and high quality. Of particular note was the soup ... so tasty. And the vegan Sheese cheese used on the baked potatoes were so good, I had to check that it wasn't the real thing. Staff we're super attentive, helpful and friendly and the live music rounded of the evening perfectly.

Where to start. When you tell people your having your wedding reception at a pub, we got some mixed looks. But the Golden Lion in Stithians isn't 'just a pub.' Nestled into some beautifully kept tiered gardens, decorated with bunting and lights, and overlooking Stithians Lake, it is the perfect setting for a celebration and scenery for some incredible photos day and night. The interior has a quaint blend of cosy, cottage-esqe warmth with the fireplace and stone walls leading to a modern, fresh dinning area, well lit by the incredible panoramic view across the gardens and lake (a stunning backdrop to our bride and groom table). The food was all delicious, many of our guests saying it was the best nut roast they'd ever had. The golden lion even have their own veg patch, taking locally sourced to another level. Emma even grew us some pumpkins herself when she found out we were struggling to find some. An incredible surprise. We stayed the week in their adjoing cottage. To say we didn't want to leave is an understatement. Again the perfect blend of cosy cottage, but well lit (natural light), modern luxuries and a stunning fireplace for when the nights are more chilly. There is a lovely morning view from the upstairs of the sunrise over the lake. Emma and the team were fantastic both on the day and leading up to it, with Emma having to deal with all our questions, requests and changes throughtout the year. As an added bonus we had the delight of being ferried from our ceremony to reception in a 1934 BSA vintage car, owned by Dave (Emma's husband). Dave is so lovely and you can tell he is so proud of getting this fantastic car up and running, having been passed down to him from his father. It was also great to hear the history of the car and about all the little (and not so little) bits Dave has had to do to fix the car and get it into the beautiful condition its in. Thankyou again for helping us make our day even more amazing.

Popped in here for a cream tea, deliciously warm scones with jam and clotted cream, a real treat. Very reasonably priced. The staff were lovely, very friendly, would definitely recommend.

The Tolcarne Inn is a pub in Newlyn, Cornwall, just outside of Penzance. I happened to be on my way to watch a film about an Irish architect, when I stopped in the Tolcarne Inn for lunch. Suspicious of gastro pubs, ranging from uppity to down-facing. Ladies were pleasant, very quiet clientele, like a village pub. I sat by the window with my book about the cognitive decline of Joe Biden, but when the food came, I forgot about Uncle Joe entirely. I ordered turbot with hollandaise sauce and asparagus, a side of boiled “Cornish dailies” and a white Americano. A warning about “small plates”. Quite, quite. You could have lost the fish in the wash, the two asparagus were stolen from a fisher-maid’s garden, the hollaindaise failed to mask the paltry dimensions. The bowl of potatoes, lathered in butter and dill, was substantial, boasting my fish like a thin man wearing large clothes. (£25 for the lot. Suspicious? I thought so too.) After the first mouthful, I was shocked. I chewed slowly, methodically, the flavours informing my tongue. The turbot was cooked with rock salt; the flesh keeps shape, easy to pull apart. The hollandaise has none of that wiry flavour; it’s smooth, not unlike a Bailey’s. Asparagus are tender, simple. Boiled “Cornish dailies” - new potatoes - are tender too. Dill and butter not overpowering. When you are filled with shock during a meal, this usually comes from the waitress dropping your plate, or some punter attacking the bar, but rarely the food. My modest meal shocked me. I forgot about Joe Biden, remembering my youth. Perfect fresh fish - prepared differently in Bermuda, but the same sensation. The outside world vanishes. Flawless food. Tourists ambling in and out of the pub, acting like the Inn was just another watering hole. No, no, no. My little turbot and asparagus and potatoes forced me back into the shell of my youth, I thought about people thinking about youth; what form it took, and so on. Walker is in shock, on the verge of tears. Now, at this point, you reach out and touch your partner’s hand, but I was alone. So the waitress came over and asked, “Is your food alright?” Because I’m thinking about time and space, prompted by the excellent food, I look up slowly, like a post-operative patient jigged back to life. “It’s flawless,” I said. “Suspiciously flawless,” I added. She smiles, walks away. Meanwhile another customer - frothy, biscuit-shirted - has the audacity to say their beer is “a bit frothy” when archangels and medcine men craft in the kitchen like so many Cornish saints. A chef peers out of the kitchen, catching my eye. A smug smile on his face. “Yes, you are God,” I want to say; I want to sing this from Newlyn to Planet Neptune.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. I had roast lamb and my wife had roast beef, very very tasty. For dessert I opted for the superb bread and butter pudding with clotted cream whilst my wife savoured the " St. Buryan Mess" which was delicious. The staff were lovely and our three dogs were welcome. All in all super pub food in a great location.
