The Golden Lion Hotel Bar in King's Lynn and West Norfolk

Have visited a couple of times recently for lunch and Dinner would recommend a table by the window in the bar area Food is lovely well cooked and a pleasant atmosphere with friendly service, sensible prises would definitely recommend

Very accommodating staff. Table near window - fabulous views. Good tasty and served promptly with a friendly waitress checking all was ok. We were staying locally but went bk for breakfast - which again was lovely although the cafetière of coffee could have been stronger. Modern feel but character Wld definitely return - maybe even stay night next time !

Stayed with friends for one night to see a show at the threatre. Paid 2x standard double rooms and when we arrived we had been up graded for no extra cost. Both rooms were sea view and were amazing, very big rooms with super king beds and lovely decor. Staff were lovely and very helpful when we asked them to add a bottle of champagne to our friends room as a surprise. Breakfast was good. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Once again, our food was great. It was a busy day when we arrived but the staff were all obliging and the food was served pretty quickly. Highly recommended

We needed a place to meet in Hunstanton for members of our family coming from different parts of the country and thought we’d try the newly renovated Golden Lion. We only had drinks, but were impressed that you could have both pints and coffee and cake in the same place, catering for all our needs. The staff were so friendly and obliging and even helped with finding us enough chairs so we could all sit together. It was refreshing to have such good service and much appreciated. The large room overlooking the sea is a lovely place for a drink and they’re soon to build a sun room leading on to the beer garden which will be great. We look forward to returning and sampling the menu.

Horrible experience I was there with my husband and daughter for a Sunday lunch. We used to come there from time to time at the bar for a coffee or cup of tea before they had refurbished and it was pretty nice. But it is not a place to enjoy anymore. After we ordered our lunch and waited for about 45 min (all the other customers were only having drinks) my husband asked what was actually going on and the waitress told him there was nothing to wait for because they had troubles with the kitchen and the order had not been placed. We had already paid, but nobody bothered to come tell us what had happened. Absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. Don’t go there we definitely won’t do it again!There are so many other nice and decent places around.

They have done a terrific job at the Golden Lion and would highly recommend. Staff are great and the lunch was brilliant. Slightly cheaper than a few other places along the coast. Only little thing is that there is only veggie option. Will definitely return

We had a fabulous meal last night (24th April 2024) . We both chose the fish which whilst appearing expensive, was beautifully cooked and presented and reflected the cost. It was plentiful and delicious. Tobias was super friendly and helpful and we will definitely return when next in Hunstanton.

Having had a superb meal with the family a few weeks ago to celebrate my wife's birthday, yesterday we decided to have an afternoon tea to celebrate my birthday. Once again it was lovely selection, of sandwiches ,sausage rolls, scones ,cakes and mini desserts. The staff were very friendly and from our table in the newly refurbished bar , the views across the green to the sea were awesome.

Stayed in Hunstanton for 4 night ate here three times. the other night was out of town the staff and food were excellent with a very good choice of food and drinks a special mention for Danni who was above and beyond expectation of service a great asset to the hotel

Stayed for 2 nights over the Christmas period with the wife and dodger the mastiff. From telephone contact to book room and check in excellent staff very welcoming and friendly. Room was great size (301) however we did find the bouble bed small but that's what we paid for so maybe should of gone for the twin in hindsight. That apart facilities, location, breakfast and bar were spot on. After speaking with the staff they say they are closing for a re vamp and the ideas sound very good so will defo return bringing Dodger with us. Such a massive bonus they are dog friendly, top marks

It was a deserted bar on a bleak winter's evening. Staff were helpful. Unfortunately bar was let down by its clientele which isn't their fault.

Well what can I say an amazing lunch served by amazing staff especially Chloe the staff were so welcoming today as we were booked in for Christmas Day Lunch as we are regulars at the Golden lion stopping off at lunchtimes having a pint and a sandwich for a couple of years or so now , so we managed to book in for Christmas Day lunch thanks to the receptionist who is always friendly and welcoming . We arrived and were asked to sit at our table as we were going to queue at the bar for our drinks the drinks were deliver to the table straight the way the tables were beautifully set with a card that said the Brandreth’s which I thought was a lovely personal touch and two crackers, everyone was very relaxed and our starters arrived in good time I had the salmon it was lovely fresh smoked salmon and the capers really complimented the fish as they were very mild and didn’t over power the flavours at all ,my partner Leigh had the pate he said it was delicious so I tried a bit of the pâté and the chutney and yes it’s was lovely especially the chutney . The service was quick but not too quick with the staff asking if everything was ok and yes of course it was as the sorbet arrived soon after the starters it really was refreshing after the starter with lovely winter berries . The mains came next I had the sea bass it was amazing the fish was cooked to perfection and perfectly seasoned, the fish was great and accompanied by potatoes with butter and seasonal vegetables I don’t normal eat sprouts , but they were good we both ate them my husband had the pork with buttery mash and vegetables again he said it was amazing as it was served with a jug of gravy he does love his gravy and very generous portions for both of us . To finish dessert which didn’t disappoint I had the chocolate dessert of course OMG more like death by chocolate as I would call it , it was so good I didn’t manage it all as it was such a large slice my husband had the cheesecake he loves his cheesecake and this one hit the spot he said it was amazing and he ate all the berries too . We went into the bar area for our coffees and mince pies which again were very good we sat chatting to all the friendly staff until we needed to say good bye and wish them a Merry Christmas , as I know what it’s like to work on Christmas Day. I would like to thank all the staff for an amazing Christmas Day lunch and we hope to see them all in a March after the refurbishment which we can’t wait to see. Thanks again for making a good day even better.

Had a meal here and it was absolutely abdominal. Old vegetables and undercooked food. If I am correct in saying that this hotel has been taken over by the owners of other hotels they need to get a grip and improve. It goes to to say won't be going again. I should have read the previous accounts.

Decided to come for dinner as we had had a look at menu online, but the menu when we got here was act reduced down. The food was pretty bad. We were actually gona leave before ordering when we heard the waitress serve the table next to us saying "here's your calamari, here's your.... I act don't know what that is". Not a great start start. Anyway, we had our young son with us and was getting late so decided to order some pizzas and the buttermilk chicken wings to share. The chicken wings came out and just 2 on the plate and had been well over cooked in deep fryer. beware paying nr £2.50 for a chicken wing which are just from a packet no better from supermarket. The pizzas weren't any better, just a pre bought pizza bases with way too much tomato paste smothered on the base. Rest of topping not that great either. Such a shame from what looked like a nice pub but is just serving very basic food in a bad way.

It used to be the premier hotel in Hunstanton. It is perched at the top of the hill with excellent views of the sea. A pity you can’t see them clearly as the windows are dirty. Especially in the dining room. The food was horrendous. We had a steak first night. Ordered medium arrived cremated on one side and chewy throughout. Inedible. No waitress ate the chips and tomatoes. Complained when she arrive. Told she would feed our comments back to the kitchen. The starters were minute. Three small prawns. But this was good compared to the pate. Four small inch square biscuits. With a roll of meat. No preparation. Presentation a non entity. The breakfast buffet was limited. The toaster only does one side. If you put it through again it burns. On the Saturday morning we went to complain at reception about the food but couldn’t get near the desk as a couple were shouting at the receptionist about the poor service and overcharging. Instead of trying to calm them down she thought arguing with them and waving them away was the appropriate response. This just infuriated them further. We went to try again just before dinner when a policeman arrived and said they had had an official complaint about poor service and overcharging at the hotel. A new receptionist said she was glad he was there as -they had a singing drunk in the bar. There are no lifts. The stairs are steep. It may have been the top hotel in Hunstanton. It is a shabby place now .

The staff were really disraspctful i went in without out a top on beause it was 33 degres outside and there was no air con inside and they foreced me to were one. I asked for the magener and the person who i asked said she will get her for me but she never did my son went in after we got the food and asked foe the manger then he came to get me to go sheak to the mager when i went in there was already a man asking her why could he have a shirt on when there was a really drunk ,an who came in with no top on and got a few beers and then the mager started screeming at me then my son asked if she could stop beause he has a headache and then she told him to shut up and started screeming at everyone then she called the police on me when the police came and forced me to leave and i had half my food to finish i want my money back and if the mager dosent know how to do the her job she should go take bannas of the trees but you need to now how to do that so it might not be a good job for her with all her nerve she wold proply bite the trees. if all the staff dont want to be respetful they should do that job they were forcing me to take my own foodto my tabel.

I’m struggling to say anything positive , dirty tables , no beer available I wanted on draught, disinterested staff , dingy low lit eating areas and that’s before the food. I ordered a pizza my partner a burger , the pizza was supermarket base with cheese thrown on top, my partners burger was burnt black on the bottom, avoid awful !

Norfolk welcome My wife and I and our dog Mutley stayed here as we needed a base for a few days whilst we visited some of my wife’s childhood memories The hotel is very comfortable, dogs are welcomed the only area that they cannot go in is the dining room. You can leave your dog in the room whilst you go to breakfast or you can eat in the bar area. Breakfasts were buffet style for cereals and pastries etc. Hot breakfast items were cooked to order, were tasty and very well cooked. Main meals were traditional pub fare, but good value. Our room was very comfortable, spacious and was serviced every day and had a good shower All the staff were really friendly, helpful and welcomed Mutley!! There is a car park for the hotel at £6/day, but there is free parking directly outside, you just have to be patient and wait until a space is free, but that was never more than a few minutes Top tip - We dumped the car and used the excellent bus service from the terminus in town using the coastal service to get to Kings Lynne and to have a good look at the countryside - use the double decker if you can for the views and it has charging points throughout and tables upstairs This is a well located hotel close to good beaches (old Hunstanton a fabulous sandy beach is a 25 minute walk) and to drive out to the surrounding area. We had a lovely time here, I would fully recommend a stay here.

Visited here while on holiday for a drink outside. Nice outside area and good views also dog friendly. Drinks were disappointing flat lager served in plastic glasses . Bar staff were miserable and the place lacked atmosphere. Such a shame because the place has so much potential.

As most of the eating places were closed mid afternoon we took the opportunity to have a sandwich at this pub. The food was disappointing, especially the egg mayo sandwich which tasted rubbery and unappetising. The egg appeared to be microwaved! Overcooked in the extreme. Hardly anyone there, and no one asked ‘how was the food?’.

Booked a weekend break for parents. They couldn’t fault it. Room spotless and lots of space. Meals were lovely and atmosphere relaxed.

Because we were on B&B and evening meal we only want a small snack at lunch time it was tasty and their local beer went down a treat,

5 out of 5 for the staff at the Golden Lion but the service, "disabled" access and condition of the hotel really needs attention. I arrived with my father who have traveled from the USA for a flying visit and my brother for a father and son weekend. I asked my brother to check out the our rooms before check to make sure my room and hotel was suitable for a bi-lateral amputee. We also inquired about parking in the hotel parking lot but was asked if we had booked parking which we were unaware you had to. The only compromise offered by reception was pay and display which is located about 500 yards away down a hill from the hotel. Not ideal for one in a wheel chair and not the best looking place to park as only available for 24 hours. We finally managed to find somewhere to park but s good 10 minutes in push power back to the hotel. After a visit a decently stocked bar we decide to visit only to be asked if we had booked the meal which we had not - surely there was enough to go around for a half empty restaurant but was told and offered the limited Al La Cart menu instead back at the bar. Finally at the end of the evening I had a chance to fully inspect my room (possibly I probably checked after check in but that 10 minute wheelchair pushed clouded my mind) only to find a step in shower and no grab handles to use the room's loo! So a weekend of sink baths and hair washes. Apparently in this hotel of 27 rooms there is only 1 that is suitable for shower wheelchair access!!

I had arrived with a friend on a cold windy and wet Tuesday evening for a catch up and meal with an old friend, The Golden Lion located in the centre of Hunstanton was easy to find. The bar and restaurant was quiet and well furnished after drinks we headed to the restaurant and was greeted buy a pleasant bearded man whose name turned out to be Matt, we were shown to our table and the menu was explained to us by him. We placed our order and waited our food arrived pretty quickly and to our dismay was very sub par with enough pate to sink a small ship and two of the tiniest pieces of toast to go with it. Our main course came out I had the duck and my friend the salmon both dishes were terrible but the only saving grace of our meal and time spent in the Golden Lion was Matt and although a new starter apparently his customer skills was the best I certainly have experienced in any of the places we have dined. He was kind, understanding and had a vast knowledge of the area and had a great sense of humour which helped turn a very ordinary evening into a great evening. Please can you relay this to Matt if you ever read this as he is a huge asset to the Golden Lion and has made us want to return in the future.

Happy to recommend a visit to this hotel, headed up by Giles and Luke (bar). Atmosphere: warm, welcoming and friendly. Location: idyllic - well appointed garden facing the sea.

Very poor service. We dropped in for lunch ordering 3 sandwiches and a hot dog with ketchup and onions. The sandwiches were promptly delivered, However the hot dog did not arrive. On asking the barman how long it would be he denied I had ordered it. When I asked if I could have one he again denied it had been ordered and walked away. By this time everyone had eaten their sandwiches and I never did receive my hot dog. In lieu of this I would not eat here again.

We visited here at the weekend for a drink in the back on the bar area, which looks really nice and cosy. We sat around a table in really nice chairs and was happy with everything until we decided to go to the toilet. I genially don't think i've ever seen as bad toilets as I have here, they were disgusting and vile, they were that bad I decided not even to use them. When I came out and told my partner, he checked the mens to find that they were revolting too.

Stunning location with beautiful views, just a Shame the same isn't to be said once you walk through the door. We popped in with the family to order some food, on arriving at the bar we were greeted by an unstaffed bar with another couple waiting to be served. 5 mins later the very slow young man arrives who was extremely unhelpful. He didn't know how to open a tab for food and drinks to be paid on one bill and I'm totally unaware if this was even possible. When repeatedly asking for a menu it still never appeared so we stole one off another table on the way out as we chose to eat outside to take in the stunning views. After 5 of us took a little while to choose from our one stolen menu we went back to the bar to order to find the young man playing on his phone and when asked if we could order food he pointed to the lady next to him behind the bar. We finally ordered after some deliberation due to some food options unavailable on the menu. Finally we got our food which was terribly average, to be honest the Marstons pub down the road was much better and cheaper. We had to return one meal for a refund as it looked very unappetising. Staff need training and food needs to be much better. The Golden Lion has so much potential and should be setting the standards for Hunstanton. Rating based on Food location and service.

Very young staff at times no manners barman kept disappearing came out of the back eating when there was 4 or 5 waiting to be served this happened more than once. Rooms like a grey box no personality but superb view bathrooms need updating. Breakfast was breakfast but dinner although the staff need better training the food was superb.

April is an interesting month on the North Sea coast. You can certainly understand the placement of those wind farms visible on the horizon while you try and stop your hat from being blown off... and the futuristic “Waterworldliness” of the oil and gas platforms - if they are visible through the general grey of the sky and sea. So, a brief walk through the somewhat sad old town of Hunstanton, whereby we wandered up to the memorial on the green, led us to The Golden Lion. It seemed a more viable lunch option for an two adults, a child and an OAP that didn’t involve sticky plastic tablecloths and cakes, so we grabbed a table.

We had one evening meal here and the food was not bad although we had Asparagus with Salmon but they overcooked the Asparagus by quite a bit. Considering the price and portion size (very small vegetable dish between two) I would not go back again. Maybe it is better if you stay at the hotel ?.

We had a lovely time , the only thing that really spoiled it was after a long drive we got to Golden Lion went to book in & no one on reception I rang the bell 3 times in the end a young man came through from the bar & told us that they were putting up a z bed we waited 20mins & when she did arrive no apology ? But was polite the overall experience was really nice I gave 5 stars for this reason food lovely & staff very attentive & polite

Lovely building in an excellent position. Thought about having dinner one evening on a recent visit but were put off by the unwelcoming staff and, in particular, the restaurant. Limited menu, offering the traditional seaside fare. Had a quick drink and promptly left.

My wife, our dog and I called in for a drink Friday night whilst staying away. It was a really friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Also very clean. The sofas were so relaxing, we had to stop for another !

Just popped in for a coffee and to use their Wifi - the coffee machine appeared to have been sorted as the coffee was very nice and also hot. Pleasant friendly staff.

Booked January 18. But room as requested not available neither were we notified. Fortunately I phoned to book a car park which would have cost £6. No apology not even sorry for making a mess of my booking. In the end it was a huge favour we stayed in really lovely welcoming facility.

Wonderful friendly and helpful hotel, nothing was to much trouble, we booked parking at the hotel in advance, right on the beach, shops across the road, comfy beds, bath with shower, kettle in room, lovely walks along the cliffs, we had a fantastic break

We ate and drank here a few nights. It was clean and comfy and the staff were friendly and helpful. You can either eat in the restaurant and have the proper restaurant menu or eat in the bar with fairly typical bar food. It was tasty and looked good.

Overlooking the village green, this us a pleasant place to relax. Beer was a little pricey, and couldn't get a phone signal. There was free wifi though. The staff were smart, pleasant and efficient.

We ate here for the two nights we stayed at Hunstanton. Drinks were extremely reasonable but the food was pretty basic. Had it not been for the lack of anything other than a fish and chip shop I doubt we would have eaten for a second night !

We was greeted by nice bar waitress and got drinks etc. We decided not to eat here after all as the place was in a poor state of repair, although some work was being carried out around the toilets... We might one day come and stay and try out again...

We booked here to have a meal to celebrate our anniversary as part of a short stay in the town, the atmosphere was relaxed and semi-formal, food was very good quality and served in good time and piping hot, cooked beautifully and very flavoursome, staff were very pleasant and attentive without being over bearing, would recommend.

Stayed for seven nights last week

Just popped in for a drink here and got a very warm welcome. It is a good location with an area outside to sit. The bar was smart, we sat inside as it was too hot. A very pleasant break

We visited last week just for a quick bar snack and drink before setting off home. Child and dog friendly which is brilliant and makes things stressless

Walked in, thought place looked a bit soul less and dingy, went to bar must have had my invisibility cloak on as the barman ignored me, saw they only had one hand pull on, and that was a Ruby, so went elsewhere

Nothing special here. It was not a hotel of food stop. We only popped in for drinks. we ordered drinks and found a table to sit at. On thing i did notice was that there were dirty glasses at the table when we sat down and they were still there when we left. It wasn't even very busy either. So the service could obviously be better

First time of visiting this establishment

We took my elderly father. Limited seating inside for an infirmed person ended up perched on high chairs. Menu not what we expected. Main restaurant not open in the day. Lovely view of the sea. Great place to visit if wanting a lunch time snack. Parking limited on first come first served basis. More for couples or adults than children.

During my recent stay with friends on our way home from Dinner we stopped in The Golden Lion for a Nightcap. It looks like it has recently being decorated it was lovely and clean and welcoming. We enjoyed our drinks in pleasant surroundings.

Based at the top of the hill on the sea front you have a great view of Hunstanton and its beach. Nice outside garden and you can also sit on the grass hill opposite the pub so you will always have room to enjoy the sun!

Location was excellent. However we asked for a ground floor room for a 97 year old who had difficulty in climbing stairs and an ajoining room if possibe for us. On arrival we had a first floor and a second floor room. Had this been comunicated to us prior to our arrival we would have gone elsewhere. As we arrived late we did not use the bar as we would have to go up and down the stairs twice more. We only spoke to one person who was in reception so I am unable to comment any further as to how the staff were.

The poor woman behind the bar was struggling to cope with serving, clearing tables and collecting food from the kitchen. She was utterly charming despite her challenges. I had a ploughman's lunch which was awful value for money. One tiny roll, a couple of slices of apple, a pile of wet iceberg lettuce, a quarter of a tomato, one slice of cucumber and 2 bits of flavourless cheddar - for £8.45.

I booked a party at the Golden Lion to celebrate our 60th Wedding Anniversary and accommodation for guests. I have to say that the staff and the facilities were superb. No detail was to small and the food served was best described and superb. They dealt with all of the preparations and we had a great evening celebration. Well done and would strongly recommend.
