Visited on the occasion of my birthday, unfortunately the lamb on offer proved of very poor quality with a high content of gristle and fat, was uneatable and sent back by one of my party-they sever another dish but this also was not acceptable as the portion had been reduced to little more than a mouthful very disappointing for my friend. I also had a problem with the Steak and Ale pie, which look fantastic but unfortunately was very difficult to cut up as the pastry was rather rock like. I had to break in and eat the meet which was tasty but leave the pastry. All in all we will never eat at The Golden Lion again and will certainly suggest our friends avoid The Golden Lion. Sunday lunch here with my family of 4 was a real treat. The food (and beer) was delicious and the service was great - what more could you ask for? We came at about 1pm without booking and were shown to our seats. The Sunday lunch menu was short and we thought we'd go for the 2-course, mains and pudding, option. Our waiter was pleasant, efficient and knowledgable and the roast dinners he bought us were first-class. A little more expensive than we are used to paying but well worth it. with the roast beef and horseradish sauce being particularly special. We were all full after the one course so had to leave the puddings for another time - but there will be another time because this must be the best restaurant in Wellingborough town centre!

Went with Wellingborough U3A for lunch today. We had pre booked our orders before we went. A first time for us to this pub cum gastro pub. It's a lovely old building with lots of atmosphere. The food was good and mainly home cooked I think. We seemed to have a mixture of main menu and lunch menu. Main menu items were huge. Hubby and I had the Haddock and chips, one between two would have been enough. It was fresh haddock though with a light batter very nice. A huge amount of chips and mushy peas. Didn't like the mushy peas. Prefer proper mushy peas not the Cheffy things made out of frozen peas and mushed and flavoured. Couldn't put my finger on the flavouring, could have been garlic, not sure, didn't go though. We thought the price was high for what it was, £12.95. Would have preferred a smaller portion and a lesser price. There was so much waste. Hate waste. Many others had the chicken, also huge but very nice. The halloumi kebab was good too, also overpriced for what it was. Puddings looked amazing, sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Yum. Again order one between two as its expensive and far too much for one person. This is on the whole one of the better pub food venues but would be better if they didn't rely so much on quantity rather than quality.

This once good pub has nosedived since Christmas. The friendly young bar staff have all left and been replaced by grumpy staff that don't appear to want to be there . I stood at the bar recently and had to wait 5 minutes before I was served, out of turn , by some grumpy old man who was more interested in filling the fridges than serving his customers . I have been visiting this pub for several years and never known it to be this bad. It was a breath of fresh air when Terry took over, good quality local ales he consulted the customers about, great food and friendly service. (Can't ask for more than that can you?!) :-)I had the steak and ale pie which was delicious!! My mouth is watering just thinking about it now!! My wife had some vegi option as she refuses to eat proper food! ;-)The service was swift (in line with our request) and very efficient but also very friendly. The food was fantastic and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!!

9 of us booked this place which came highly recommended. Upon arrival we were quickly served at the bar and then shown to our table. The dinning room is stunning with high vaulted ceiling and in the style of a hunting lodge. The food was excellent, and the portions were huge. The service was superb and over all there is little this place could do better. I will certainly go back when I'm next in Wellingborough.

Been here multiple times over the years and always enjoy the food, on the last two occasions I've noticed the quality has slipped since the two ladies that ran it before left. The pâté is now smooth and bland and tastes like Supermarket page and not Bistro quality pate. The cheeseboard has also been reduced and cheapened with what seemed to be lower quality cheeses. To be fair the steaks are still superb and other mains on the night looked good.I hope this restaurant isn't going to go down the cheapening process that happens at most restaurants round here. People will pay for good money for good food, that's how the golden lion got its reputation to start with. The fact that it's no longer No 1 or 2 on trip advisor in wellingborough, as it has been for simply ages, is a sure sign that changes are a foot and they're not for the better!!!

Honestly the waitress was arrogant and rude to us , we did not feel welcomed and served properly. Don't go there please, not worth it to spend money

We have visited this pub several times before but not for a year or so. We were greeted warmly and despite not having booked were able to eat in the dining room. We chose from a very varied menu, we both opted for the soup of the day which was homemade apple and parsnip served with homemade bread, both of which were delicious ! My husband then had the calves liver with bacon and I went for the steak and ale pie, both were served with mashed potatoes and fresh veg medley. Sadly we were both too full to have a pudding though they all looked very tempting. The staff were very attentive and friendly we will certainly be returning soon.

We arrived dead on 7.30, our appointed time yesterday (Saturday night). We stood in the bar area after I notified the bar we were here. The young lady came up with menus and then rushed off again leaving us still stood in the doorway.Moments later she returned and asked what was the age of our lad. I told her 16, she said he could not eat here as he was under 18. I immediately told her he had eaten here before, approx 3 times. She went off again and came back stating they could not allow him in.Of course we were not happy so we left. As we walked out my partner went back in to ask for head office details as this was mad, the restaurant is away from the bar in a room of it's own. I could understand if the eating area was in the main bar but it's not and in a room of its own.My partner stated that this was mad to the lady who appeared to be manager as well as managing the kitchen. She told him that we had been told before about bringing in our lad. I walked back in as he appeared to be sometime, he advised me we had apparently been told about our lad before. When the lady manager returned I tackled her on this, I advised her we had been in numerous times and at no time had anything been mentioned. I told her further if something had been said before then indeed we would not have brought him back in. She agreed and apologised, I suggested someone was making this up. She apologised and said they must have got their wires crossed. We left of course.I know there are rules, I also hold an on licence but find this particular company rule crazy. For goodness sake you can get married at 16. This is just mad and bad for business. We live 5 minutes walk from the pub and used it regularly to eat in addition to brining our lad and used it regularly in the summer to sit outside with a drink. But you know this ridiculous and crazy rule has put us off and I doubt we will return. I cannot understand this, 12,13,14 I can loosely understand but a 16 yo, come on this is mad!

This pub serves very nice food in a relaxed environment at a realistic cost. The bar is also respectable however we visited on a Friday night for food & I must admit some of the bar clientele left a bit to be desired in character terms. As result we left but otherwise would have stopped to have a post dinner drink in that area.

Going on the reviews I had read on Trip Adviser we sought out this pub. It has a nice atmosphere so we both ordered burgers which were lovely and really substantial. My only complaint is that they were served on wooden boards with skewers through them which makes them very difficult to eat. Call me old fashioned but I like my food on a plate

Visit regularly as close to where I work. Pop in for the odd lunch and meal after work with colleagues.Pub is a great little pub with regular band nights, open mic nights and theme nights for food. Good drink and wine selection - only issue is the card limit! But can now open a tab if you provide your card which gets picked awy and you have the key.In terms of food, lunches are good. Big doorstop sandwiches and baguettes with a variety of fillings. Come with crios and salsd and always a generous portion. Sometimes get Chios to share but always regret it as can never eat it all!!Evening meals are good pub grub. Menu is sometimes quite basic but quality is good and usually something for everyone. Often have set menus and not badly priced. Can be a bit pricey for what it is but not actually expensive. Probably one of the best pubs in Wellingborough, especially for food as not one of the '2 for 10' type places - actually cook food from fresh!!

Mid January , we took mother out for Sunday dinner , she was staying with us for a few days ,and we thought we'd have a Sunday treat, and my goodness ,what a treat it was. I love roast lamb, my husband loves roast beef, and mother loves roast pork, they had all three on the menu, lovely amount of meat, Yorkshire pudding, gravy separate in a cute little sauce pan , then there were roast potatoes, boiled potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, peas, broccoli and last but by no means least, cauliflower cheese . now I love a pudding , but I was so full ,I couldn't manage one, not even one to share with the hubster. the staff were very helpful and attentive, we were seated next to a lovely warm wood burner which mother in law loved, we all had a hot drink to finish off with , two pots of tea and a frothy coffee, they came with a little jug of smarties, it finished the meal off perfectly.I can honestly say its one of the best Sunday roasts I have eaten, and would highly recommend it , we all enjoyed it and thought the price was very reasonable, we will definitely be going there again.

Visited for lunch Sat 9 Jan. Booked a table the day before just to be sure of a table as in the past they've been fully booked. We were greeted on arrival. Attended to by friendly, laid back yet professional staff. Good selection of cask ales, red wines etc.The menu has the right amount of variety and won't keep you all day wondering what to have.I opted for a homemade beef & rioja pie with mash and veg. The pie was ample in size, the veg fresh and tasty. The only downside was that the mash was a processed product, but still good. All in all a pleasant lunch.
