Fine ale and great pub grub! 🤪

Came here on a quiet Thursday night whilst on a work trip and was very pleasantly surprised. The 3 of us ordered food and it was all absolutely delicious. My friend said it was the best shepherds pie she’s ever had. I had the chicken stew and it was really tasty. Staff were very friendly too so would highly recommend.

Friendly staff and great service. Dog friendly so always go with the fur baby. Misses loved her food, mine was average, so only 4 stars.

Ye Golden Lion renowned for being Wellingborough’s oldest pub, dating back to the 16th century this pub has its own unique character, with typical Tudor architecture. The interior is nicely decorated with a welcoming atmosphere. The food at this venue, is enough reason to visit, with classic pub, comfort foods being served on their menu, the Sunday roast. Could perhaps be the best roast potatoes in town with full flavour, perfectly cooked, the full English Breakfast, again possibly the best in the town, this is a venue worth visiting and seeing for yourself just how great the food and service is.

I was recommended to the public house by a close friend of mine, I was amazed how beautiful the old building was it was a massive wow... Even though I didn't eat the food that was served look lush. The choice of real ale /lagers/ciders, and my favourite Guinness. Staff were lovely and the pub very very clean. I will return and with friends and family to make a night of it .💯

The food was great and the service from them was great also. Thanks and highly recommend. When i entered the service from them was great and was very welcome to me and my family that came. When we ordered the food we didn't have to wait too long and all came out perfectly well.

Worst food here!! They gave us mouldy food!! The nachos were sent out burnt and with brown chilli that tasted awful so we had to send it back then they sent us out a cheesy flatbread that had mouldy cheese on it. They sent us back some nachos with guacamole that tasted off and mouldy cheese. We will be lucky if we don't get food poisoning. The worst thing is my 2 year old ate some before we noticed. The chef came out to apologise as he had found mouldy on the food in the kitchen too. He had the cheek to say all I do is cook here! As if it wasn't his fault! No Refunds given but they said next time we come back my son could eat free... as if we would come back. Dodgy looking place and I can't imagine the state of the kitchen. The person behind the bar was very friendly though.

Absolutely can’t knock the food at The Golden Lion. I’m not a meat eater but have to admit the steaks (steak night Thursday) look fantastic. The plant burger and veggie pizza are lovely - portions are great and the price extremely reasonable (you will find it hard to find this quality cheaper) Book your steak in advance. One of the most underrated places locally; if you can, go. Drinks are reasonably priced too.

As a person that dines out often and thoroughly enjoys a restaurant experience, I can honestly say that this pub deserves a review more than most. In such a difficult time for hospitality, this pub is trying hard to establish a reputation for good honest food. I had an amazing meal delivered by friendly, hardworking staff. I would recommend to anyone and definitely will be returning,

Just had the Homemade Lasagne.... absolutely fabulous, the best I've ever had!! The garlic bread was also superb... thoroughly recommended!!

Arrived without booking on a weds evening. Made to feel very welcome. The dog came and they brought over some water for him. The meal was very enjoyable and reasonably priced . Will definitely return

Ye Golden Lion is a charming pub, conveniently located near The Castle Theatre. The bar staff are friendly and welcoming, and the manager's hospitality was exceptional. They serve an excellent pint of Spitfire, and the food is outstanding with generous portions. I opted for the fish & chips, while my wife enjoyed the lasagne, and both dishes were delightful. I highly recommend this establishment and look forward to returning on my next trip to Wellingborough. Cheers 🍻

I had an open buffet for my father's wake. The selection was excellent the staff were friendly. Comments received from family and friends attending the wake were excellent. I've visited The Golden Lion on previous occasions and never had cause to complain. Highly recommend.

Went in for their Thursday steak night with my gf and another couple, sirloin steak and chips, onion rings and salad for £10 each! Really nice size steak cooked well and sourced locally, only two pudding options, we all went for sticky toffee pudding and custard which was delicious and a good selection of beers, ales and ciders

Live music on Fridays so only reason I go out in Wellingborough!

Great pub to eat at before visiting the theatre, which is a 2 minute flat walk away. It was Steak Night (Thursday) so we all chose the steak (although there were several other options) The food was lovely and fresh, with a friendly service

Welcome return of a good old Town Centre pub. Great food, including excellent Sunday Roast and daily specials, a few good cask ales, great company.

Great landlord fantastic bar staff especially the young girl from Friday night the 8th of September.

Made an impromptu trip here whilst visiting friends. Cheeseburger was absolutely amazing, great pint of Guinness & service with a smile, all at a decent price.

Very good value for money. We popped in here for a family meal whilst passing through Wellingborough. They were in the middle of changing the menu but we are very accommodating.

We are attending an event, here in their snug it is the perfect place to hold any events, the landlord Phil is on hand if you need him. This is a quaint 500 year old pub, I would highly recommend their pepper steak pies. Thank you for making us feel welcome, we will definitely be back.

We had a lovely meal here today, 4 of us enjoyed:- 2 x Scampi, Lasagna & Sausage & Mash. The service was great, very welcoming, and the Chef came to ask if we enjoyed our meal, which was a nice touch. We would definitely recommend, and will return for sure Thank you Regards Betty

Came in for family birthday today roast beef was lovely! Met the new chef - looking forward to the changes he’s going to implement. He plans to bring in a new menu and cook everything fresh. Really hope it works out, will defo come again .

The goat curry is amazing and also the fish ! Portions are very generous and it really is good fresh food , it is like restaurant food at home but larger portions . Very pleased thank you

Goat Curry had more bones than meat. Flavour was good, but needed more sauce on the Rice and Peas as it was dry underneath the thin layer of sauce. Guess I got a tough deal, but wouldn't try again.

Such a shame they have closed this lovely put down. Loved sitting outside for drinks and staff were so chatty and friendly and such a lovely building.

Es un fantástico edificio histórico en el centro de la ciudad y afectuosamente recordado por muchos wellingborough con su galería de los ministreles y golpeado cobre mesas en el salón. Espero que reabrirá bajo la nueva administración, ya que es una pena ver vacía. Tenían algunos músicos buenos allí.

Reservamos aquí un encuentro con un grupo bastante grande de amigos antes de Navidad. Como un pub histórico, conocido como tener algunas buenas noches con música en directo, a pesar de la muy pequeña. El menú estaba bien, una mezcla de comida casera tradicional pub. principalmente La comida era buena. La cerveza menos. Nos sentamos en el lado izquierdo del comedor del pub, que no es habitual para nosotros. En general era frío en el pub y muy corrientes. El acceso a los aseos es a través de una puerta, junto al comedor y al lado del bar. Esto conduce a un pasadizo y la piedra fría los aseos. Estas parecía limpia, como es habitual, el problema era la persistente, francamente "pissy olor" que se desprenden de este pasaje y la zona de comedor. Este es un muy antiguo pub y así pueden tener restricciones en el drenaje y antigua. Podría haber tenido la puerta de ayudó el bar cerrado con una puerta de primavera suave para cerrar cada vez que alguien lo usa.

Came here as was working through lunch and decided to sample something off the menu and I have to say it was one of the best burgers I've ever had!!

the Golden Lion is the type of pub tourists can only dream about. It's old, but delightfully furnished with atmosphere and good ale. the food is excellent and it's a good place to meet for small gatherings or large ones.

Despite being a beautiful building this pub has now priced itself out of the market on both beer (£4+ a pint) and the expensive food which really isn't as fresh or nice as it was a year ago (microwaved roast potatoes on a Sunday and stale flavourless bread at lunch time)

As usual there seems to be a group of us ending up for a burger here :). Never lets us down - unless we are late and kitchen is closed. Lovely food

Fuimos a este restaurante por primera vez en unos pocos años y nos decepcionó un poco esta vez. Todos tuvimos 2 / 3 cursos y de las 6 de nosotros, la mitad de nosotros encontramos la comida normal. El personal no era demasiado agradable, un poco deprimente, y no eran conscientes de las ofertas especiales, tuve que ir y la hora, y tuvimos que volver ya que había pedido algo en el menú que no tienen disponibles. La mitad de nosotros tenía las tartas que era realmente bueno y un montón de carne. La otra mitad tenía cena del domingo dijeron que estaba bien.

Fuimos a cenar con amigos. La ración de marisco era magnífico. Hamburguesa genial. Casero vió dick. Todos genial. El servicio era bueno. Me encantó la comida. Buena selección de cervezas. Tenía una banda en directo. Volveremos.

Grandes esperanzas, pero no la mejor comida que he probado por un largo camino. . Pastel de carne. sin carne y horrible verduras. . Llevé a mi hija. En 7:00 1 1 alrededor de la calle lo que me dijeron los niños tienen que salir por 6. . No dejes que los niños. Si desea asegurarse de que he ido en 5 horas!

Have visited here for Sunday lunch about 3 times in the last few months and has become one of our favourites.It's always really quiet but that doesn't bother us as we have 2 young kids so it works ok for us.The food is really good. Everything is perfectly cooked & very enjoyable. Only thing to make it a 10/10 would be to get a few extra roasts !Staff are pleasant & welcoming and we feel it's very reasonably priced. The portions are big with a lovely mix of vegetable & cauliflower cheese. Yummy.

This is a pub that I have wanted to visit for some time, looks great form the outside and this week I've started working close by so it seemed the ideal place to go.Really not disappointed, friendly staff, nice short menu and relaxed surroundings. Definitely going back.

Organised a meal for 6 of us to celebrate my partner's birthday on 28th December. The golden lion was our first choice and didn't disappoint. We ordered a range of starters and main courses and they were all delicious. When we were paying, I mentioned to the barman that I'd completely forgotten about a cake. Within a few minutes, the chef had placed a brownie on a plate and written happy birthday in chocolate sauce and the barman brought it to the table with candles lit.Thank you for a lovely night, with great food and service.

3 of us had Christmas dinner on December 19th. 3 courses plus sorbet and coffee. All food excellent.

a group of us went here on december 15 2016 for a christmas meal.the place has a lovely atmosphere,superb staff who cant do enough for you and the 3 course meal was wonderful.also we did a quiz which was a great laugh which we won...i recommend you go here its amazing.

4 of us chose the set Christmas dinner, well it was disappointing!Starters were the best part of it. The Christmas dinner had one tiny tiny slice of Turkey, some overcooked shredded gammon, hard not cooked enough roast potatoes, veg was good as was gravy and pig in blanket!Desert, plum pudding was far too small, not enough cream, cheese n biscuits were the best!Coffee was hardly warmShame as we had heard of such good reviews!Lot of money for not a lot of food!

Another visit to The Golden Lion and delighted to find Wilf still there again. We had a lovely welcome, the beer was in superb condition and the fish and chips for the ladies even better than last time.Our disabled friend had Cod Cheek Scampi and said it was really good, I mixed a couple of starters (no problem said Wilf) calamari and whitebait which I followed with Cajun Chicken. All in all the food was very good indeed and the service splendid.We will be back but sadly not until next spring, thanks Wilf.

Called in when passing through Wellingborough with my family and a friend. The food was out of this world. Amazing value for money and the staff were amazing nothing was too much trouble. I ordered the pie and I am always a little skeptical about ordering pie incase it's been microwaved however this was obviously cooked fresh. I will definitely return when next in town.

Visited this evening with 11 other colleagues after a H&S Review, so you can see my need for good food and drink, I was not disappointed, food was excellent, service very friendly and drink very palatable, waitress Julie was very professional and hard working and with a nice warm smile let me know if 09, 10, 83, or 116 wins the big card, and I'll be back for my winnings and another ribeye steak x

Called here at 2.10pm today. Having a terrible day. Asked what they could serve quickly as we had to be out by 230. Chef did two bowls of really good chips a great double fishfinger sandwich in excellent bread with smoky coleslaw and salad.served promptly. We made our appointment. We will be back

Such a shame as we use to love it in here....unfortunately, the current management is less the personable, food hit & miss and its lost the very thing that made it the best country style pub in Wellingborough....the 'feel' is simply no longer as friendly or accommodating as it once was. Huge shame but they seem to still be busy....not the worst place in town but unfortunately, no longer one of the best.

Stopped for a quick lunch and found a fusion yummy meal The outside is yellow and looks like an old pub and the food is hot and yummy Staff was good parking not so great as the road is very busy

Nice pub, but a little bit strange. At 8 p.m. the kitchen was closed.

Visited on the occasion of my birthday, unfortunately the lamb on offer proved of very poor quality with a high content of gristle and fat, was uneatable and sent back by one of my party-they sever another dish but this also was not acceptable as the portion had been reduced to little more than a mouthful very disappointing for my friend. I also had a problem with the Steak and Ale pie, which look fantastic but unfortunately was very difficult to cut up as the pastry was rather rock like. I had to break in and eat the meet which was tasty but leave the pastry. All in all we will never eat at The Golden Lion again and will certainly suggest our friends avoid The Golden Lion. Very disappointing evening as the attitude of the staff was also not very helpful.

Myself and my family often enjoy an evening here and would definitely recommend it. The food is lovely and is served in a beautiful restaurant which has some gorgeous traditional features. They often have live music playing on a Friday evening and this is always a really high standard and very enjoyable.Staff are always really friendly. Highly recommended.

I went for lunch with my young grandchild and I could not have been more impressed. The Manager greeted me and my granddaughter and made us both feel very welcome indeed. Having a pushchair and trying to carry drinks outside he couldn't help me enough. I will certainly be visiting again. All credit to the manager and his staff.

Used to be our local but even though we now live miles away we still try to support it by going two or three times a year. Lovely pub with excellent food and good beer. There aren't many decent pubs in Welly but this is always great, especially the food - so try it out to keep good places like this going.

We come back year after year and are never disappointed usually a group of 30plus and they never struggle the service and the standards are excellent well done Golden Lion

Fab roast beef, didn't have room for a dessert. Vegetables are served in separate dishes which is nice. Homemade Yorkshire puddings ! Excellent service. My only criticism would be that I would have liked the roasted parsnips softer.

Lovely staff and really lovely food! We had 2X roast beef. Delicious! Loved how the vegetables came out separate, also the cauliflower cheese. The meat was tender and there was more than enough gravy! Will return!

Sunday lunch here with my family of 4 was a real treat. The food (and beer) was delicious and the service was great - what more could you ask for? We came at about 1pm without booking and were shown to our seats. The Sunday lunch menu was short and we thought we'd go for the 2-course, mains and pudding, option. Our waiter was pleasant, efficient and knowledgable and the roast dinners he bought us were first-class. A little more expensive than we are used to paying but well worth it. with the roast beef and horseradish sauce being particularly special. We were all full after the one course so had to leave the puddings for another time - but there will be another time because this must be the best restaurant in Wellingborough town centre!

Have heard positive reports on this pubs food for some time so thought it only prudent to try it out.I wasn't disappointed, my wife and I had the 3 course Sunday dinner which was approx £17.. There was a choice of approx 4 dishes on each course, I had the calamari, roast beef and cheese cake and the wide had prawns, roast lamb and sticky toffee pudding.Food was well presented and tasted lovely... The bars staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient.... Well done chef !!!

Went for the first time tonight for dinner food was excellent 5 stars great service as well made to feel very welcome from lady behind bar who also took our food and drinks order my wife had poached pears for pudding and said they were lovely the chef is very very good will be going back in future to this great pub/resturant

I went earlier today with a (middle-aged male) friend who was told he had to remove his hat - true, it is written on a sign on the wall (see photo) - but why? It was 6pm on a quiet Wednesday, the place was almost empty - they just lost a couple of customers - and we still are not sure who could be offended by a hat...
