The Golden Fleece in Wiltshire

This was our first visit on a Sunday, my wife wanted to try Sunday lunch. She was not disappointed, the roast beef was cooked to perfection and a splendid offering of fresh vegetables including a delicious cauliflower cheese. I choose the superb goats cheese and walnut salad (delicious) followed by Lasagne which was exceptional particularly the delicious cheese topping. We have become more frequent visitors of late, our food has always been excellent and varied, the staff are knowledgeable and friendly and the menu is varied creating a problem of, what to have next. A great choice of beers and drinks too.

Went for our 47th anniversary meal. We decided to order quite a few starters instead of a main meal so it was like a tapas. We moved to a larger table to accommodate all the dishes. They were delivered quickly and nice and hot. All the food we got to try tasted delicious, unfortunately we had a family emergency so had to rush off part way through, so took what we could in a take away box. We will definately go back.

We’ve been here on numerous occasions & it’s been lovely, but today (Sunday Lunch) wasn’t good! The food was cold, even with the waiter stating be careful of the cauliflower cheese dish being hot, it was all cold! The beef which we had was very fatty & not enjoyable, having to waste allot of it! We mentioned our issues to our waitress, who said she would let the relevant people know but there was no apology for this issue! I feel bad having to leave a negative review, as the staff & food are normally lovely, but I felt it was needed. Thanks

We wanted somewhere local to celebrate my mum’s 70th Birthday that would be big enough to take around 30 guests. Ali and the team were amazingly accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for them. The food, a selection of the finest antipasti, followed by pizzas, was fresh and delicious and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Thank you Ali and all of your staff for helping to make it such a wonderful occasion.

Lovely building for an Italian! The food is ‘reasonable’ as far as Italian food goes, it always tastes great, have been on a couple of occasions and will return.

Great find, the food was amazing. We all opted for fish dishes, tiramisu & creme brulee, in hindsight I should of taken a photo to share. We visited whilst on holiday and found them very welcoming and friendly. Thank you II Vello D'Oro for a lovely meal - I wish you were nearer home!

Best Sunday lunch for a long time, highly recommend the Pork Belly, wife had the Lasagne, not running in grease like normal, we'll be back for sure, we'll done everyone.

Not been before, but great place to visit for lunch as we did. Over and above helpful, and I had a linguine pasta made just for me! Must be a first. Homemade tirimisu delicious! Service friendly. Highly recommend.

For the second year running our book club chose to organise our Christmas meal here, because last year's one was so lovely. Again, it didn't disappoint. The manager actually remembered my dietary requirements from previous visits, and food was cooked specially for me. I cannot fault either the food or the service here, and will be back again soon. The food here is amazing, absolutely first class. My steak was cooked to perfection and the pasta dishes looked amazing too Despite asking for our order to be taken from three of the staff, we had to wait for over 40 minutes before someone did. I accept this when restaurants are busy, but seeing the staff congregating for chats when we were waiting for someone to take our order was frustrating to say the least All of this said, if you want amazing Italian food, then highly recommend a visit here….might just want to bring snacks to allow for the wait!

Great lunch menu. Friendly welcoming, attentive staff. The lasagne is very much a cut above the rest. Good value for money. Highly recommend.

Sunday dinner treat for the family. Service was excellent BUT sadly the roast dinners were swamped in a rich gravy. I think you should give the customers a choice and provide the gravy in a gravy boat. All you could taste was the gravy throughout the dinner. The roast potatoes were over cooked and were hard the cut up. Very nice restaurant, comfy chairs.

Had a lovely meal here last night for my 60th birthday, they even sang for me when they brought out my dessert. Staff were very friendly and attentive and nothing too much trouble. Will definitely visit again. The chicken pasta was excellent.

We've often eaten here and had excellent food and service. Until this week. We booked for lunch and our waitress organised drinks very promptly before taking our order. I asked for scampi with a salad, avoiding chips and we also asked for garlic bread to share. When our food arrived, I had scampi and chips with a bowl of salad and no sign of the garlic bread. The waitress suddenly realised I hadn't ordered chips but I said that was OK as my husband would eat them. Despite reminding her about the garlic bread, it never arrived. Our waitress was quiet and efficient, and busy with new arrivals as the restaurant began to fill. We eventually decided it was pointless asking about the garlic bread and finished the meal with tiramisu. The bill duly arrived and in the absence of garlic bread, she offered to take off the service charge. We decided, as the majority of the meal had been fine, to ask for only half of it to be deducted. I think my main problem was with the manager. Although he was there, he didn't deal with any of this problem. He seemed to be fine with going around the tables and chatting to regular customers, but in the matter of the missing garlic bread and the chips I had not ordered, he left the waitress to deal with the problem and didn't even look at us when we left. In many places we have eaten, the manager will normally speak to customers and not leave his staff to face an unhappy diner. Popular eateries don't only rely on their food, their service is just as important, and unfortunately it felt as if no one really cared. Sadly we've eaten our last meal there and won't be coming back.

Been a few times and thoroughly enjoyed in the past. Came with a friend for her birthday one evening when it was steak night. For starters I had mussels which were lovely. My friend had the king prawns which were not great. More or a soup with only a few prawns. We had medium rare steak which was lovely although a bit fatty. Blue cheese sauce was nice but not overly strong. The atmosphere was great. It came to £100 which I thought was very steep for the steak night deal with only two starters and two mains. We did get a bottle of wine as well but I’m not sure how it came to that much

We have been here many times and love the food but today was exceptional! The most delicious roast lunch that we have eaten in a very long time ! The staff are so kind and friendly. Big thank you x

We haven’t visited this lovely Pub since pre Covid. The standard is still as good as past times. My hubbie had the Pork and I had the Beef. Both meals were very satisfying. The desserts were good too. We were made to feel very welcome and the staff looked after us well. The Restaurant was very busy and as folks left tables were quickly cleared and reset for the next customers. Will definitely return.

Excellent food, really friendly and helpful staff. Dietaries fealty with without any fuss. Good generous portion of calamari, Delicious gluten free pizza. Eaten here 4 times in past 2 years and it consistently good. Quite an achievement. Thank you, we will be back.

Wonderful food - as expected; we have always eaten very well here. However, the way staff dealt with one member of the group's dietary requirements went above and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble - the maitre d' spoke to the chef to check exactly what was in each recipe, and every member of our group was very pleased with their choices. Exceptional service, thank you very much.

Have eaten here several times, great food, very friendly staff, clean, well organised, nice atmosphere. One of our regular eateries with friends. Will be back now that we can eat inside again. Highly recommend

Best meal we have had not just on this weekend away but for a while. Delicious parsnip soup, all sorts of elements to the dish made it exciting to eat. Then I had the salmon which was so tasty and cooked perfectly and my husband had the chicken which he thoroughly enjoyed. And we had the sticky ginger pudding which was amazing. Absolutely recommend here

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE! Me and my partner had a fantastic meal this evening. My partner is a head chef so he’s very fussy when it comes to food but it’s the best meal we have both had in months! Couldn’t fault it at all. Will be returning for sure!!! Yum!

The food was good enough and the staff were pleasant, but we felt like we were taking a risk of getting infected by Covid. The place was packed and the tables close together. They were using every table. Our table was next to the door to the garden, so we had people walking right behind our chairs all evening long. In the gents, they didn't even close off one of the urinals. We were with friends so we didn't want o make a fuss, but we won't go back there unless they show more respect for our safety.

My partner and I have visited twice in the last month. Very nice place with great staff. We've had pizza both times which were delicious. The best Tiramisu! Can't wait to take the kids next time.

I regularly shop in the Lowdon Garden Centre opposite but had not felt much interest in Il Vello D'Oro (ie an old pub once called The Golden Fleece). I'm not sure why; the lunch menu at £7.95 is very good value, but I think I looked at the menu once and found it limited. How wrong I was! I came here for lunch soon after Eat Out to Help Out ended with my partner and his son. Pizza is always a safe bet when dining out with young people. But in fact two of us had pasta (penne arrabiatta and spaghetti al ragu) which were extremely rich and deep in terms of flavour. My partner had a goats cheese pizza which he loved. The staff are efficient, friendly and - Italian! I work from home in Atworth so I will certainly be doing the 15-minute walk back for lunch another day. Delicious! I would be even happier if they added a fishy pizza or pasta to the lunch options!

Ordered a pizza for collection as my usual choice was closed for lockdown. A very nice pizza and plenty of tasty toppings. Have eaten in before and can say the food is very very good.

Three of us dined here having played golf locally. Italian menu very good and the food lovely. Attentive staff and a very relaxed ambience within the restaurant which, I would say, is more than suitable for children. I recommend the calzone but all out meals were well received. We would have no hesitation in returning.

I'm sorry to write this review as it's one of my favourite restaurants. You cannot fault the food or the service but feel the social distancing and covid has been forgotten. Cutlery on tables condiments on tables no face masks on any staff. Extremely busy no social distancing. I even witnessed a spoon being taken from a table which had been previously used by other diners and taken outside for another diner to use !!!! Please take this virus seriously you are an excellent restaurant.

Booked last minute for lunch during a busy period with the help out scheme on a Monday. They had outside seating only which was fine as it was a nice day. Really attentive waiters, perfect service, reasonable prices, will definitely be back!

Had a lovely meal there with family. Late birthday treats for three out of the four in our party. Atmosphere pleasant though a little unsure that rock music, albeit in the background, was was quite what we wanted to listen to at the start! Good food choice, all cooked very well and everyone in the party enjoyed their meals. Staff attentive without being intrusive and all current guidelines followed. I hope the locals use it as its a great place to eat.

Booked after recommendation by a friend and we were not disappointed. Great variety in the menu - and certainly all the choices made by those in our party were delicious. Not overly fussy but bore the hallmark of an excellent chef - husband declared the lasagne to be the best ever (and he has been sampling lasagne for well over 50 years now!)Staff all excellent - attentive without making us feel swamped, all in all a great night out.

This is a fantastic authentic Italian restaurant. We celebrated my wife's birthday and had a great evening, the food and hospitality were first class. We will definitely be back and highly recommend this restaurant.

Was invited out with a group of friends, everyone had preordered their choices. We were made very welcome by the staff. It looked very clean and nicely set up. When the food arrived wow it looked fab and it was brought out together so no one was kept waiting ( about 16-18 of us) it was well presented very hot and very enjoyable!Yes we’d definately visit again and would highly recommend a visit

We came here with our family for Christmas day lunch ,and what a treat , the place was buzzing ,as always a very friendly greeting on arrival , ordered our drinks and shown to our table , being Christmas day we pre ordered our meal when we made the booking,and within no time at all we were being served our food ,the staff are very efficient and friendly , when you see your food you know its going to be wonderful, its always very hot and absolutely delicious ,as are the deserts , we love it there ,

We visited this place for a Christmas lunch with friends.Il Vello D'Oro is a lovely traditional pub from the outside but the style and staff is Italian. The staff are wonderful and the food dependably good.Their Christmas meal was a slightly different twist on the English custom but excellent quality and value.

What an outstanding place to eat out! The food is delicious and well worth the money. The staff are very attentive and helpful too. Would recommend.

Ten of us paid a glorious visit to this restaurant, I had baked Mozzarella for starters followed by orichette pasta with meat balls in a delicious sauce, my wife had prawn cocktail followed by lasagne with a dessert of tiramisu, to say our meal was absolutely delicious is an understatement, the rest of our party also had glowing reports to say about their food. Ten people with no complaints is unusual but this was true. Will we go there again YES.. The service was also first rate. Highly recommended..

We been to this restaurant a few times before and always enjoyed it,but this was our first visit for Sunday lunch and It was one of the nicest roast dinners I have ever had,ever thing was perfect,the pork,roast potatoes vegetables and lots of lovely gravy.

A really nice restaurant from the converted local pub. Pleasant surroundings, good ambiance and the food was excellcent. My only critisism was that the drinks prices were expensive.

We visited on a Saturday night, we had booked but the place was relatively empty.

After a morning out walking we headed for a local farm shop for lunch only to find them fully booked. The car park of Il Vello d'Oro was full to capacity so we weren't overly optimistic that they too would be fully booked but, fortunately, we were politely asked to wait for 5 minutes. However, within a couple of minutes we were comfortably installed on a corner table. The service and the 2-course Sunday lunch were excellent. We wouldn't usually have dessert but were really glad we did as they were homemade and a real treat. Couldn't fault the roast dinner - everything was piping hot. Hope to make a return visit in the future.

My friend and I had lunch here nearly £27 and what a waist of money. Calamari was frozen and tasteless, the chicken pat’e had an awful flavour, very watery as if it was a few days old. Lasagna was hot , but nothing as flavour some as in Italy, I know as I’ve worked in Italy for many years, same as the Cannelloni hot but missing flavour and frozen chips, come on, not in Italy, fresh fresh and fresh.

Looked on Tripadvisor as we were staying in this area and this place was highlighted as No1 of 49 places. We called in here for a drink on our way to our hotel and booked up for an evening meal on Fri night 27 Sept. The place is just perfect and the food was absolutely mouth-watering. Two of us had the Prawn Cocktail starter and they were amazing. For mains two of us had Lasagne, and the other two had Rigatoni Al Pollo & Risotto Porcini. I must say that all the starters and mains were absolutely perfect and we all really enjoyed them. Pints of Peroni are a little expensive at £5:10. We all really loved the place and the staffs were just fantastic. It’s certainly worth giving it ago.

Our family of four descended on the Il Vello D’Oro on a Thursday lunchtime. None of us had eaten here before, but had decided to make a visit following recommendations from friends.

Our local within walking distance. Got home after a long working week and decided not to stay in. Good decision, fillet steak on the specials menu. We both had the steak, not a morsel left on our plates, tender and perfectly cooked. Also the wine was a perfect match and good value. Very friendly staff and a good choice of pre dinner Gins.

We had a birthday dinner here after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. I am pleased to say all that I read was true. This place is superb, an extensive authentic Italian menu. The three of us had three courses and drinks for under £80. It was delicious! The service was spot on. If you want to experience a lovely relaxed atmosphere, coupled with first-class Italian food then look no further. We will be back again. Thank you.

Our 1st visit to this restaurant even though it is local to us, lovely meal very accommodating the removed the spinach from Julia's salmon and gave her a larger salad rather than chips, I had the roma pizza and it was just right.

My wife and I popped in here Tuesday - steak night, two steaks for 29.95 the steak was quite probably one of the best I have ever tasted, served with salad chips and vegetables and choice of sauce, all excellent, service was excellent, nice surroundings, we shared a starter and sweet, including drinks for two. £52 excellent value, we live locally so we will be returning to try their Italian food.

We visited the restaurant for an evening meal. Parking was easy and we were welcomed by friendly staff. We were shown to our table and offered drinks, then given time to choose our food. The staff were helpful and friendly, and somewhat amused at my pronunciation of some of the dishes. The food was fresh, well presented and very tasty with a good choice on the menu. The prices were very reasonable. A great experience with friendly staff.

We booked a table for two last minute on a Saturday. We have the Gambino starter which arrived within ten minutes, then I had a steak off the specials menu, which was cooked to perfection and for the first time in ages no waste. My wife had the cannelloni which again cooked superbly. The staff are very attentive and the facilities are very nice and its reasonably priced. I would highly recommend an evening meal here.

Authentic Italian food at reasonable prices staff very friendly and knowledgable. We shared the mushrooms and calamari to start and then both had an excellent pasta dish. No room left for desert but the tiramisu looked great

Meal was terrible. Salads dried up and basic.Runny tasteless cannelloni, soggy pizza , meatballs were very uninteresting and the person in our party said they were the worst he had ever had. There were 8 of us and we eat there regularly and we all have good appetites so we spend a large sum when we meet up there. I got the impression they just can’t really be bothered once you’re a regular as they think you’ll just keep coming back. Service was patchy, they need training.

Four of us went there for a family meal. The staff were very friendly and did not hurry you for your choices.

Found this via trip advisor and impressed by the good reviews, it was a last minute decision at 8.30 on a bank holiday evening. Easy to find and park, the staff were very attentive and welcoming and the decor was lovely. I would recommend the mushroom starter - we then had pizza and a chicken dish, all arriving in a timely fashion and hot. Very impressed overall we will be visiting again to try other dishes off the menu.

I took my husband here for his birthday recently, having found it by internet searching. The staff were friendly and efficient. We ordered within 20 minutes and our starter arrived about 10 minutes later. It was delicious. Our main course arrived after a further 10 minutes, was delicious and plentiful. The house wine was very good. The menu was extensive and we had a fantastic evening.

The pizzas were very tasty and authentic and the whole meal for two of us and drinks seemed very reasonably priced. The staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant itself looked brand new. Not sure if it’s recently been renovated but it looked like it :).

Wife wanted to try this place as it mentions a Vegan choice. Sadly the reality was a very limited choice. No Vegan " cheese" but we were offered a Ham topping! Side serving of cold peas means not even an average experience.

This pub used to be a nice but typical English pub. Now it is being run by an Italian family. The food is very good and not too pricey. It is well worth a visit

Had heard great things about Il Vello and visited recently for lunch. Very good food served with a smile in cosy surroundings.

Have eaten there several times and as a Coeliac (Gluten Free) with mobility issues I have always been looked after perfectly and have never been affected by any gluten problems. Today we had a party of 11 for my wife's birthday and everyone was incredible, friendly, helpful, patient with a smile and a sense of humour, for which we are truly thankful. The food, as always, was superb, all delivered together, no problems with special orders, and in a very reasonable time. We all had a great time and were checked on regularly by staff and the manager, showing that little bit extra care. The cost was also very, very, reasonable! The whole inside has been refurbished in the last month or so and is even more welcoming and spacious than before. Many thanks to everyone.

Had a large family party here on a Saturday afternoon. Food was delicious and service was very good, particularly given that it was 3 courses covering the full menu for such a large group.

I,ve just home from an evening at the fleece, after being closed for the best part of two weeks.

A great restaurant, a complete refurbishment is nearly complete and looks great! Some interesting features... great food Beef sirloin was perfectly cooked and the roast potatoes and gravy were delicious and tasted home cooked. Cauliflower cheese was great and cheesy the red cabbage was tangy, and sweet, tasty! Desserts were truly awesome!!! Lemon cheesecake was creamy and tangy with a crumbly base. Tiramisu has fabulous reviews and the sticky toffee pudding was delicious! Definitely recommend this place and will be back again when we’re over visiting friends again.

Pre booked a table for 12 midday as were celebrating a birthday and wanted to definitely get in. Was aware that they have only just re-opened as been refurbished. This is still to be fully completed.Upon arrival went up to the bar to make our arrival known. After a bit of tooing & frowing were shown to our table. Thought we had been forgotten possibly?! Asked the whereabouts of the loos and these are obviously still under construction. Had to request soap as none initially available. Menus left with us on table. It seemed a while before our order was taken but the food arrived very quickly. Roasts all round. Plenty of meat & roasties swimming in gravy on your plate, vegetables help yourself separately which I prefer. Everything piping hot. Child’s portion plentiful. At this stage started to get REALLY busy. Menus brought back for dessert selection. Nice choices. All of us were full after 2 courses. Bit upset at being rushed at 1.30pm as our table was required for the next punters so our exit was hurried & let the whole visit down! Car park manic so glad we were leaving.

After getting back to normal from Christmas ,this was just what we needed. Food was as always freshly cooked and delicious. Fred was delightful and could not have served us any better. This is a must for us for special occasions and just treat days.

We heard it had recently changed hands and thought we would give it a try when visiting friends nearby. It has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the service was friendly yet efficient. A good choice of food , Medditetean based. I have fabulas prawns to start and a great rib eye steak- very tender and cooked to perfection. Our friends who are a vegan and vegetarian also said their food tasted great. Only slight complaint was the wine was not the best we have had, but this was outweighed by the free puddings and drinks we were given free of charge. Will definatley return when we are next in the area.

I had eaten here previously with a friend and had the pasta which was excellent.

My husband and I eat here regularly, sometimes twice a week. The staff, atmosphere and food is all superb, we can't fault any aspect of it. The only downside I've found is we've been spoilt and have found nowhere else that can compete with the steaks. They do a really good steak night on Tuesday evenings and a bargain lunch-time menu. What is there not to like - it's the best local eatery around!

I live locally and go to the Italian at least twice a month , we also go for Sunday lunch monthly. I have always had fantastic food with great service. Highly recommended !

Normally go to Mother and Wild in Corsham for pizza but for a change tried this place nearby in Shaw. With a gluten free pizza option and good reviews we were hopeful.

Visited on a very busy Friday night due a party group of 22 being booked in. Thought we were going to get a table but the staff made an effort to find us a table for four which was very nice. Very busy but service was good. Amazing food!!!

Stayed in Melksham for 2 days to visit Bath. Had a hunch about this pub / restaurant that it would be good and it didn't disappoint. Great Italian food, pizzas, pasta, chicken and risotto, lasagne etc. all cooked in the proper Italian tradition.

Mum lives in Melksham and had heard good things about this venue. We're both a little fussy on knowing what we like. As read in previous reviews and heresay it lived up to its reputation. The restaurant is segregated by walls and pillars allowing a degree of privacy and intemicy. The getting as warm ,the menu delightful and not at all rushed. The food was piping hot and tasty being freshly prepared. The staff were friendly as well...we ended up talking about our dogs which made it personal. I lived the experience and won't hesitate to recommend it and will take family there again

A midday lunch, great bar staff, and had good food,, a place not to be missed. i have visited the Golden fleece many times, and have not had a poor meal.

This was our first visit here,it won’t be the last,good friendly service,lovely food,I had the sea bass which I have quite a lot but I have to say it was probably the nicest sea bass dish Ihave ever had,my wife had lasagna which she enjoyed and our granddaughter had meatballs off the children’s menu.They have quite a varied menu and have a number of things we will be going to sample on future visits.

I'm quite fussy with food but i've never seen so many things on one menu that i wanted to try. The food was excellent and very tasty, the staff were friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back.
