We booked a table for 4 and we're really looking forward to it, after it refurbishment. We left our contact details, just in case of an issue. On arrival, we noticed a hand written note on the door, saying " no food, due to a technical issue" We asked why nobody had called us to and basically got a shrug of the shoulders response from the staff. Pretty poor way to treat customers really. So a 20 mile round trip was wasted and we had to find another place to eat. It used to be a decent place for a meal and a few drinks, a few years ago.

I recently visited The Golden Cross, and I can’t stop raving about it! This charming English country pub is a hidden gem that offers a delightful dining experience. The food is simply outstanding. Every dish we tried was bursting with flavour, showcasing the best of local ingredients. The portions are impressively generous—seriously, you won’t leave hungry! I had the Bangers and Mash, and it was packed with tender meat with a rich, authentic sauce. My partner enjoyed the hearty fish and chips, which came with a mountain of crispy chips and fresh peas. What truly made our visit special was the service. Liv and Lucy were absolutely fantastic! They were warm, attentive, and made us feel right at home. Their recommendations were spot on, and their friendly banter added to the welcoming atmosphere. If you're in the area, do yourself a favour and stop by The Golden Cross. You’ll be treated to delicious food, generous portions, and exceptional service. I can’t wait to return!

October 2024. Unfortunately, as we feared, the pub does not appear nor feel refurbished at all. It needs a deep clean and upgrade. Very let down. 04/07/24 update. Still no trace of refurbishment... 20/06/24 After more than one month of closure I still cannot see any sign of refurbishement/works there... The 5 stars are given as support, hoping that one day we can enjoy a better athmosphere and food than the ones experienced during the previous management.

The Golden Cross has just been taken over by a new landlord (Adam Maddox). From today it will be open all day. It has a great garden and also a large lounge bar. Most disappointing roast dinner - gravy basically water - vegetables hard and undercooked Most unhygienic - a man was unblocking the sewage, which made it impossible for people to sit in the garden without passing out from the fumes. We can see human waste splashing around. And, we can’t enjoy food indoors as the smell went in the pub! I don’t know why they decided to do this @ 3pm on a Sunday.

Went to this pub after a lovely walk in the Chilterns. Conveniently located near Saunderton train station with a free car park outside. Large outdoor area with some play equipment but not used as we visited in winter. Staff very friendly and welcoming and definitely worth a visit for this alone! We had a drink and then some dinner. Typical pub fare on the menu but perhaps more vegetarian options than you would normally get in similar places - chilli, veg curry etc. We had the mixed grill and the fish and chips - both hit the spot after a long walk.

I agree with the post below. I have tried twice in the last couple of months to have a meal here. Once by myself and once with one other person. Basically walk in - asked if I have booked, I respond no I have not and I am told that they can’t help me all the time hardly paying me any attention. So I leave. No suggestions of sitting at the bar/waiting for a table/welcome to stay for a drink. As soon as I say no I have not booked they continue what they are doing and just blank me.

Unwelcoming. Two years ago we enjoyed lunch here. Recent experience was attrocious with clearly stressed bar staff. We only stopped for a quick drink, which we explained, but were asked if we'd reserved even though half the pub was empty. Awful service. If you can't go to a pub for a 30 min drink with 4 people when there's plenty of seating available then it really isn't a pub.

Had a fantastic Saturday afternoon here. An hour's walk with the family and dog in tow was rewarded with a quality meal, washed down with one or two (or more!) perfect pints of Black Sheep. The place has adapted well to outdoor serving with plenty of space and an intelligent set up. As the afternoon progressed an outdoor heater blew warm air into the marquee to take the chill off. Great, friendly service too. The only regret was the walk home - it felt like twice the distance!

We were already apprehensive about our stay at Danesfield House Hotel & Spa due to the lack of communication prior to arrival. We had called a month in advance to book a couples massage and were told this would be fine and that we would receive a call to confirm payment. However, no such call ever took place. After weeks of trying, leaving voicemails without anybody returning our calls, somebody finally answered, and, to our dismay, informed us that a couples massage was no longer available. This was very upsetting, given we had previously been told our booking had been confirmed and that we would receive a call to make a payment over the phone. The only option, now, was to book two individual massages - which was not honouring our original agreement. However, after reluctantly agreeing to this, we were then called the next day to be asked if we minded moving the timing of that appointment! Apparently they prefer to arrange everything so it suits them. We, the paying guests, were inconsequential it seems. Now to our stay. Upon arrival, we were due to receive a bottle of champagne as part of our package. However, we did not receive it. Instead, we had to request it the following day where it did finally accompany our dinner. Had we not pushed on this matter, that bottle of champagne would have gone elsewhere (as I suspect was always the plan). The room that we were given was adequate at best. Mindful that we had not selected to stay in one of the more luxurious rooms, I was still rather alarmed at the exposed wall plugs in the bathroom where the radiator was noticeably coming away from the wall. There was also paint peeling off of the window frame in the bedroom, and all of the complimentary biscuits to accompany the teas and coffees were completely crushed. The other issue was that we were woken between 5 and 6am during both mornings of our stay by very loud footsteps and noise coming from the area above our room. Again, I am mindful that we hadn't chosen the most luxurious room, but the entire proposition is a 'luxury break' as you will see from their marketing literature. This was not supposed to be a Travelodge experience. At the end of what was supposed to be a relaxing retreat, we were not in the mindset to complain, but upon reflection, we think you should know that it was a disappointing stay. There were a couple of members of staff who were helpful and lightened the experience, but on the whole the customer service was not on a par with the experience that is portrayed by their website. We gave our feedback to Danesfield who did offer a complimentary night's stay, however, we weren't able to take this offer up for a while due to work and life commitments. When I did finally get around to organising our return stay, a member of staff rather abruptly told me I couldn't have it anymore! Nevermind then. I'd have been less inclined to write this review had they honoured that arrangement, considering there was no expiration date accompanying that offer.
