The Golden Cross Hotel in Bromsgrove

One of the better spoons we've visited. Friendly staff and a nicely cooked breakfast, would certainly recommend and return

I've always been an advocate for Wetherspoons pubs but the Golden Cross Hotel isn't what it used to be. It's always well attended and can have a good vibe on a Friday/Saturday night but the motivation amongst the team is overall lacking. While I've eaten here many times in the past, the menu is now overwhelming and the food always substandard. The bar service is all so robotic and, if you don't manage to catch the eye of someone, often sluggish. Tables aren't cleared quickly enough or cleaned sufficiently, particularly the more private booths. The Golden Cross is long overdue investment. The subdued brown decor needs a rethink and a complete overall. Wetherspoons have some sensational new concepts but this place has sadly been left behind. It's no wonder the staff can't get excited. The manager perhaps needs a team talk too. Mr Martin - time to take a visit and give this place a little love!

Firstly I would like to say we love Wetherspoons and regularly go to the Golden Cross Bromsgrove. Having said that the cut backs are beginning to show. I was with a large group on the 10th February 2024 and from the moment we we were there and for next two hours no one collected the glasses. This includes the glasses from the previous occupants. There well over 50 glasses on several tables. It’s ridiculous situation.

Visited today with my 2yr old grandson for breakfast. Ordered on my phone app as its easier with a little one. A lovely lady brought my cup over for the hot drink, she saw I was on my own with a little one and offered to get the hot drink for me. She even brought small cutlery and a teaspoon for his beans on toast. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was good value for money as always

See attached photo. The table number was unclear. I thought it looked like 33, plus it was next to table 34. 18 minutes from ordering, neither my breakfast nor drink had arrived, so I had to chase them up. The breakfast then came and I asked the waitress about the drink. She said she'd chase it up for me. Five minutes later my drink still hadn't come, so I inquired about it. The manageress said I'd given the wrong table number and they couldn't find me (even though the waitress knew where I was sitting) and gave me the Pepsi Max, which by then had been sitting on the bar for over 20 minutes and gone flat. Meanwhile, the food had started to go cold, so I told her I'd leave it. I didn't ask for a refund and I wasn't offered one, but suffice to say I won't be eating or drinking there again. I did later message Wetherspoons customer services via the app and did get an apology, but no offer of a refund. Maybe I should have been a bit more assertive!

Decent food and prices, friendly staff and clean surroundings, I'd return here and certainly recommend

I had the misfortune to go to this pub for drinks, and three small plates to share with family on Wednesday, early evening. Although I knew from previous visits that this is not the best Wetherspoons in the world on this occasion it was really bad. It was dirty, tables hadn't been cleared and the Ladies toilets were in a terrible state. In addition the food was awful, particularly the pizza which was burnt at the edge and not properly cooked in the middle. I tried to finish it as I don't like to waste food but I couldn't. I should have complained at the time but we decided to move on.

Normally everything here is fine. I came here with my mum and girlfriend for breakfast this morning and the service was appalling. My partners food came out with half the items missing and when she spoke to the waitress (the girl with ginger hair), the waitress was extremely rude and tried to argue and starting arguing about beans of all things. We never have an issue here but all of the new staff are very rude and noone cares about the customer service.

Midweek visit around tea time, it's what you'd expect. Fairly busy with an OAP crowd, no trouble, no rowdiness, friendly staff, cheap drinks and food. Ordered at bar and using app, quickly served. Food was hot and had no complaints. Staff doing the rounds to clean up where necessary Functional and value for money.

I enjoy visiting this particular Wetherspoon but do occasionally eat in here. However my visit last night fell below standards. There were several tables that needed clearing and cleaning. I found a table and had to move the plates and cutlery myself and also requested twice for the table to be wiped down. On other hand, I do enjoy your boneless chicken basket

Burger over cooked to the point of being inedible. Presented in an oversized plate with 12 chips! 1/2 chicken looked like it had been sat on and not sure if it’s supposed to be grey in colour? Altogether unappetising, unpleasant and under parr!

Located in the heart of town, this is as most spoons are, very popular. The interior is deceivingly large and there is a small outside area to the rear. As per usual, service is quick and the range of goodies on offer extensive and unbeatable price wise.

Standard wetherspoons. Tables are very close and not much space between or private - travelling solo so took up a 4 person table. App service was good, slight wait for food 20 mins but was decent lunch food.

The food is very poor, not properly cooked, cold and we waited 1:30+ minutes for it to arrive, poor.

What you expect from a Wetherspoons. Good food good service. The staff were nice very pleasant helpful food came quickly as normal can’t fault anything. Everything was clean and I would highly recommend this Wetherspoons for breakfast it was great.

Visited for good and drinks both of which were reasonable in price and quality. Staff were friendly and surroundings good.

Ordered Classic & Gourmet Steak. On arrival Gourmet Steak had no sauce as advertised and peas were uncooked and cold. Waiter stated sauce was additional despite it advertised as included. Order was replaced after a long wait, by this time a family member who accompanied me had already finished theirs. Ambience of venue dark and uninviting. Received a message via my Wetherspoons App subsequently with 20 pages stating previous media untruths received during the pandemic and corrections made. Personally, as witnessed today, if staff can’t get the basics right, then customers will go elsewhere. At the end of the day you get what you pay for. I will not be returning.

This used to be a pub. Haven't visited for a couple of years and now it turns out that no-one is allowed to stand at the bar, you know, as is the norm for a traditional English pub. So it's no longer a traditional English pub. Of course, they don't tell you that till they've sold you a drink, then threaten to throw you out if you don't move away from the bar.Not exactly what I'd call welcoming. At least the guys on the door were friendly.

If I had to pick my favourite Wetherspoons then I would go this one as I know what to expect. Very spacious and popular Wetherspoons plenty of seating. I’ve heard toilets have won an award for being best in the country but be prepared to walk up two flights of staffs. Upon my visits here staff have generally been courteous and didn’t have to wait to long for the food. They also serve some of my favourite lagers. Go for the meal clubs as they tend to be better value such us Fish Friday or Curry club (if they haven’t run out of curries)

Supporting local business is what we do and we choose to visit The Golden Cross in Bromsgrove today. Not the best and probably won’t visit again for food. The staff were very nice and the COVID control was in place but the food just wasn’t up to scratch!!! It was more like Kim went to Iceland, very poor presentation and very poor quality food. I’m sure you can do better!!!

Lovely place. All the restrictions of course but speedy service (mind you they weren't busy, early afternoon.) Enjoyed my meal. Would go back

My Wife and I are regulars of this pub, the meals used to be very good but now it's gone really down hill.They left the doors wide open on a bad windy day, I was there with my mom who is 90 and she really feels the cold so I personally shut the doors myself to protect my mom from the cold, what I was greeted with is a really argumentative assistant manager giving me the big one about Covid 19 when the place was also overpacked due to the half price meal offer with kids everywhere (really makes sense).The meals were very very poor no sauces in sight and my mom commented to a waitress who was covered in tattoo's on her legs that the place was a dump. The waitress fired into my mom very aggressively.No let's just all stand back and think about this? my mom is 90 and she probably isn't in the right state of mind, she comes out with a comment of which maybe she should of kept to herself, but to of verbally get attacked by that waitress was unforgivable and the waitress should of taken into account that my mom is old.Going back to the subject of the Golden cross having no sauce, we were told that the chain is struggling to obtain sauce, this is purely not the case because my Wife and I visited Gloucester the day after at "The Regal" and they had all the sauces!

Food was nice and affordable, staff very friendly, doing very well with the current social distance guidelines. Clean and hygiene is next to none

This was our first visit here and must say that the food was great value. The pub is spacious and well organised in terms of “COVID safety” ( this is unusual in our experience). The service was speedy and helpful, many thanks to Harry who looked after us so well.

Very clean and friendly, very nice food and drink , good service, all for under £16 for three people 🙂🙂🙂 will definitely be calling in again .

w e popped in early week didnt feel that hungry but we were tempted by the half price offers so both had the scampi meals both very good and quickly served.very good real ales and wine at excellent price.all the staff very friendly exceptional mention to the manager kelsey oliver who worked her socks off all night but still kept smiling we had a super night out,well done kelsey big pat on the back for you and mr witherspoon will definately be going again thank you!

Firstly for a Wetherspoon's it was quite quiet on arrival, the one way system is easy to follow. A very nice girl behind the bar greeted us as we sat down. All the tables that were empty were clean and the pub looked very tidy. We used the App as instructed and the drinks were delivered to us within three minutes. We didn't eat here, however I asked the couple next to us what their meals were like. They said they were perfect. The toilets were very clean and well stocked. I will be haunting the Golden Coss again very soon to try the food for myself. Well done to the team. The Ghost

Just had the worst meal at Wetherspoons we have had for a long time. Thought we'd go for a steak to celebrate our wedding anniversary, No. 6PM on steak night and no steaks available. After some thought we decided to stay and order something else. - 2nd mistake. I had fish and chips, no tartare sauce available. Why? Manager gave no answer. Just Sorry. The fish was ok, but the chips weren't hot and cooked in old oil which looked not presentable and tasted bitter and the peas were cold! My husband ordered chicken and ribs, the chicken was tough, the ribs were cold and the chips were the same as my. Needless to say it got sent back. The 2nd attempt was at least hot but the chips were still cooked in old oil.We're usually quite regular at the pub for breakfast and had few times no good experience with them before, but never ever had an experience as bad as like tonight. Very poor, and why weren't the staff wearing face coverings to serve the tables? Only one servant we saw wearied his face mask. We have had first breakfast just pub opened after lockdown and no staff wearied face coverings at that morning too. Not recommend the pub to anyone. Won't be going back any time soon.

Went at the weekend for breakfast and my mum had the small beans on toast. All our food was fine until mum noticed the bread was absolutely covered in mould. She had been giving my 1 year old nephew some of her beans! So lucky he didnt have some toast. Mum only noticed when most of beans were gone and the toast underneath was visable. She had eaten half of it!!!! My sister took to the manager and complained. She was lovely and so shocked at what she saw. She couldn't apologise enough! We had the breakfast refunded in full but it really has put us off coming back here again.

Credit where it’s due. We’ve had a couple of less than perfect meals at the Spoons, however, last night was all good. Great steaks, good service and value for money. Keep it up!

We visit wetherspoons all Over the country and are seldom disappointed .I even stayd in there hotel in Grimsby last week.I was great and very reasonably priced.The service in Bromsgrove is never great at the bar but last night it reach a new low.The first drinks were slow with one person serving .The staff just ignored us.When I went for our second drink there were eight people waiting and only one person serving.We left and went to another venue with similar low prices and much better service.I am not alone in my opinion that the service is bad.It is common knowledge. Please do not send a management reply because you obviously cannot manage!

Me and my friend came for a girly catch-up over brunch. As we went to order what we wished for (eggs royale) we were disappointed as they did not have any poached eggs or salmon or muffins. Then after altering our order to brown toast and scrambled eggs we were told they had no brown toast, then told they had no blueberries so we could even have the fresh fruit option. In addition to this as we went to pour a coffee, one of the machines was not working. And to top in off, the food was average.However we will proceed to attend our local Wetherspoons as we are broke and just like the atmosphere.If you are the type to enjoy the finer things in life then do not even take the liberty of coming here as you will be thoroughly underwhelmed. Can't fault the service, just make sure that there's more than one on the bar so customers don't wait to long, food great,served very quickly, the coffee machine is the best around.

Came in for a snack and drink. One spoon of chilli on a bone dry potato?? Not good!! Complained to the waitress and she said “really “ took the plate and avoided coming back with feedback?? Apart from that it’s a good spot for a cheap drink

A typical Wetherspoons. Good choice of well kept real ales. Clean, comfortable and attractive surroundings. Good ambiance. Reasonable food. The bar staff are always welcoming and pleasant. What else could you possibly want from a pub? For many years I avoided Wetherspoons’, considering them not to be “real” pubs, but have been “converted” by the amazing choice of real ales that they offer and their exceptionally low prices. Wherever I go I now look for a Wetherspoons, and the Golden Cross did not disappoint.

Came in for hot drinks, very busy at lunchtime so tried again in the late afternoon. Two efficient drinks machines with everything you need. Interesting local history facts on the walls.

I drink in the golden often. Not my favourite place but meet friends. I gave up ordering food a few years ago due to the fact it usually has something wrong with it. However someone ordered me chips. Oh no I thought. But you can't go wrong with chips can you. Yes you can they were cold.

We brought the family here for Xmas breakfast. Found a nice large table and went and ordered a selection of breakfasts for everyone. The menu is really large for breakfast and we all really enjoyed it. The food came out really quick considering how busy it was. Everyone really enjoyed the food and I enjoyed the small bill. The black pudding wasn't as nice as the Weston Super Mare Wetherspoons, but still nice.

Excellent location and staff, great atmosphere, ordered a cider and Abbot ale very good. Ordered Spicy coated king prawns and a 5oz gammon & eggs. Prawns arrived no sweet chilli sauce, chased the sauce 5mins later at kitchen to be told no chilli sauce available, a bit to tell me, gammon a bit tough. A shame, not what I expected.

This is a great place to come for cheap yet reasonable food. The staff are somewhat attentive but the toilets could do with being cleaned more regularly.

Looking forward to a steak on, wait for it, “steak night”. Unfortunately in a Fawlty Towersesque twist “steaks off!”. To add insult to injury they hadn’t got our second choice of pizza either! With a new pub opened at the end of the high street offering cheaper beer and the fact that the ceiling in the Golden leaks like a sieve you have to wonder who’s steering this wayward ship. If it carries on it’ll be like the Marie Celeste!

Having travelled from West Bromwich I was looking forward to popping into a new Wetherspoons. However, this one was a little too quiet for my liking. No problem to try before you buy and after trying two, I settled for a Spitfire (okay)

This a friendy pub were you sit and have a meal or just go for a drink, meals are good and resonably priced.

Went here with a friend. We both ordered through the app and ordered within 30 seconds of each other. One fish and chips came out within about 15 minutes but the other didn’t come out until about another 20 minutes after that, by which time the first meal had been finished. We asked why this was and was told by the waiter that he had put a half hour wait on the food. It was busy but food for the same table (at any other eatery) usually comes out together, so was not impressed with this. The food was ok, cooked etc, however the first fish and chips that came out seemed rushed with barely any chips or peas. Also not sure what it is with salt here, this is the second time I have visited and been unable to get any salt, seems they have about three you have to share with the whole pub.

Came here again as we were in the area and had our evening meal which as usual was really good. The staff were really friendly and helpful and we had a great place to sit so all was well. Will certainly come again when in the area.

Will always go here for drinks in town. Offer a wide range of cheap drinks. Their food is very underrated - it has always been fantastic for me. Great casual atmosphere.

Visited for lunch with about 15 friends midweek. Excellent food with good service from friendly and efficient staff. Great choice of drinks and a wonderful back courtyard to sit out in on a sunny day.

I am writing this review as a comparison between the Metropolitan Bar Wetherspoons in Baker street and the Golden Cross Hotel Bromsgrove Weatherspoons. Weatherpoons are not 5 star and do they claim to be. but compared to the Golden Cross the Metropolitan Bar gets five stars.

Drinks were acceptable, staff accommodating. However the food left a lot to be desired. Steak overcooked and more suited to use as shoes, chicken the same. Food sent back, and the same quality returned. Would not recommend

I ordered the mushroom risotto and it arrived so dry and obviously heated up in a microwave that it retained a square shape stuck together on a round plate. I ate half of it, and I should of complained as it was disgusting. Drinks there cheap, but food wise worst Iv eaten anywhere.

The Golden Cross is now the centre of Bromsgrove, friendly staff, big shout out to Steve. great food all day and an amazing selection of drinks and of course such good value.

Visit on a busy Saturday night and managed to grab one of the last tables, lots to choose from and the steak at under £12 caught my attention. On placing my order at the bar I was informed that my choice included a complimentary pint - genius! Food arrived quickly and there was plenty of it and it was served hot and steak cooked to my liking. Returned the next morning to try out the breakfast which was again bargain prices along with free flow coffee...half English this time and again served pretty fast...could have been a bit hotter but it was good enough. Place is huge so getting a table does not appear to be a problem, friendly staff and food at these prices is a sure fire winner...

Typical spoons. Really cheap cocktails! Wait time wasn't bad considering it was a friday night. The iorder app is really great, love having the option to get the drinks brought over to us but most of the time i like to go up coz you get to chat with people. Food was pretty good, everything hot but the chicken wing were a bit overdone. All in all, pretty good spoons.

My wife and I went to this venue with friends for pre dinner drinks. The place has a great atmosphere, the staff are friendly and efficient and the drinks are great value for money. Great choice we will definitely return.

Of vomit for the Golden Cross. A place where any dreams of a classy night out go to die. Advantages: cheapest drinks if you want to get hammered/ are under 21. Disadvantages: bit of an old dish rag, people lack teeth.

Very good find. Very quiet but it was a Wednesday evening. Ordered food and drinks on wetherspoons app, was here in the blink of an eye. Staff friendly. Excellent service, excellent quality and excellent value for money

As a treat and when staying at a Travelodge we always try and find a Wetherspoons for breakfast and now they even do a smaller version of Eggs Benedict - amazing

We went here for lunch & the four of us plumped for the 'steak & drink ' deal & chose sirloin.

Called in at lunchtime and ordered the all day Brunch. Rather delayed delivery to the table compared to normal, despite the premises not being busy.

Beyond doubt great value as with all Weatherspoons.

Visited here last week on the way to Warwick Racecourse. No parking outside but small car park around the corner off Windsor Street and a one minute walk thereafter.

Fantastic pub with brilliant prices!!! Plenty of staff and quick service. Food very nice. Atmosphere really good.

2nd time we have popped in for breakfast over the past month. Ordered the eggs Benedicts which have arrived on a burger bun..... not fun with the sauce has soaked into them leaving a mushy texture to everything... we tried again today but again the same thing... if you’ve run out why not let people know or do the sensible thing and use toast! Eggs were cooked nicely though !

This will be about my 91st review and I invite my readers to checck out all my others where they will see I give not only a balanced view but also the benefit of any doubt.

Visit every Friday with friends always a good selection of real ale and the food is good quality and excellent value

This is one fantastic pub! Great value food, fantastic service and one awesome selection of real ale that changes often. I cant recommend this place enough, easily the best pub in Bromsgrove.

Came here for our meal and the staff were wonderful, Tommy the young guy that first served us was very happy and friendly and food was good as we expect in Wetherspoons. We spoke to one of the managers Tom and had a good chat and he was very friendly. This is a great place to come for food and or drinks, will be back if in the area.

Stopped here for a few drinks on a Saturday evening. The rear garden is sunny and there's plenty of seating. The flowers and plants are well cared for and made the place look cheerful. Plenty of choice for beers being a Wetherspoons.

This is not a review of the pub itself, only a review of the useless door men that are there.

Visited for a cheap n cheerful meal. Excellent value, friendly staff, clean and tidy. Faultless, will be returning

Went in for lunch ordered food and drinks via the app, food came before the drinks waited 20 mins for drinks in the end went and got them ourselfs so our food was cold waiting! Why have this app if you have to go to the bar yourself , no apology what so ever!!

I’ve got a real bugbear when eating out and it seems to be endemic across the industry - MICROWAVED BACON! (Or at least bacon that looks like it’s been microwaved.) Insipid, rubbery and no colour. Fat that you want to be brown and lovely and bubbly and crispy but is pale, raw and sad looking.

The place looks tired and worn and needs attention. However as regular visitors some things have improved especially at the bar. There are more staff now and that is a big plus helping to cut down waiting times, however the introduction of the app allowing customers to order food and drinks from the table does take bar staff away from the bar at busy times and can be frustrating. The introduction of self serve coffee machines has been an excellent idea, releasing staff to serve at the bar.

Cheap and cheerful, very busy and rightly so. Well organised and decked out, well done, will be returning

The golden cross is ok but being good for being a booze stop for the curry house opposite he resteraunt India Spice, which allows to bring your own drinks and the pub allowing to take the drivers over to the resteraunt.

Stopped here for some breakfast food wasent very good place wasent tht clean plus there was loads of flies around told staff but they wasent bothered would not go here again

Member of staff who was clearly more interested in chatting to a friend and clock watching to end their shift missed a main meal from a family of 4 order. Family meal at two sittings. Apologies accepted from the person left to deal with it...

It runs pretty much to the Weatherspoon's formula. The atmosphere in the pub is good, and there is an excellent range of reasonably priced drinks. The Golden is spacious and a pleasant place to visit for a drink.

My wife and I had a lunch meal . I had steak that was ok . My wife had a 1/2 Piri piri chicken that was more like a 1/2 sparrow . It was over cooked and bone dry . It should have been accompanied...

Yet again another cold breakfast this has happened to us on more than one occasion the staff are helpful and...

Pub with a lively atmosphere. We enjoyed fish and chips, which must be some of the best we have ever eaten. The cider was well served, the staff appeared to be enjoying their work.

I came for a working lunch, and ordered a chicken burger. Wifi worked really well and it was quiet. I was able to get power. I had a problem with the food i ordered but as soon as I raised this with the waitress she fetched the manager, and he resolved the problem with no fuss. Good service and clearly care about the customers.

happened upon this place when staying overnight in Bromsgrove for work. friendly staff, food was fine. I visitedcon a Monday early evening so it was pretty quiet. please enough, so will return when next staying in the area.

Used this hotel on a couple of occasions, service was always quick and efficient. The quality of the food and beverages was very good.

The Golden Cross Hotel is a decent enough pub with a decent enough interior and good range of drinks. The pub is quiet dark inside though and is located a fair way away from the train station like all of Bromsgrove town center. On the positive side though there is some parking right at the back of the pub, but I think you have to pay for it.

Great pub with a good atmosphere, good food and brilliant staff, special mention to barmaid Megan who went out of her way to help us.

I first have to admit to being a Wetherspoon snob never fancying them how wrong I wasMy husband and I visited for lunch, I have lived near to Bromsgrove for over 40 years and had never set foot in there, what a beautiful building that was the first of many surprises the next was how tasty the food was and how cheap. The staff were very friendly and efficient. This was my first visit but it won't be my last

The Golden Cross is a Wetherspoons pub.It is quite large, plenty of seating and has access to a council? Car park at the back.We popped in on Friday night and it was quite busy but service was pleasant and quick.Typical spoonies prices and choices.Stayed here for a couple of drinks in comfy seats and would come here again.

We went for a meal here on a Saturday afternoon. The food was good quality and good value for money. I stood at the bar for over 10 minutes waiting to give my order. There was only one customer in front of me. It was not due to a staff shortage though - the staff were too busy chatting to each other.
