Visited last night for dinner with my family, have been before and had lovely food. 1st the staff didn’t find our booking and we had rang 30 minutes earlier, only 1 other table had someone sat there! Ordered our drinks both mine and my daughter were flat (coke & lemonade) told the staff and said they would change them , 15 minutes later came to order food , I asked where our drinks were (they had forgotten) ordered our food and then 2nd attempt at drinks came - flat again!! Went to bar and was told unfortunately there was nothing that could be done as no one else there and couldn’t offer an alternative (even though there was bottled coke which I had seen) . I asked for our money back on the drinks we had ordered & not yet had , got that, no apology. Such a shame as food is lovely but we left and won’t be returning.

French bistro styled traditional hotel. Lovely details and fixtures, though some of the dining chair cushions could do with a bit of love. Haha Went for sunday dinner with family. Menu choice was good, with a selection of roasts and alternative options with a subtle french influence. All cooked and presented nicely. I felt really well looked after, with a friendly welcome. Service was attentive and efficient, taking care of some non-standard requests with ease. All in all, good value for money and fully enjoyed the experience. Tres bien! :D X

Hadn't been here for a while. Pub was very quiet. Only two tables occupied in the dining room. No background music which would have enhanced the atmosphere. Four of us dining. Waited around 30 minutes for our meal to arrive then unfortunately our order was wrong! One of us accepted an entirely different meal so we could all eat at the same time. (Lasagne ordered .....roast chicken delivered)! On a positive note, the food was well cooked and tasty. The staff were pleasant.

Ordered chilli and rice for £12.95. It came served in what can only be described as a small plastic dog bowl. Very small portion. For the best part of 13 quid most pubs would have made an effort and served it with chips and tacos etc. In short - very lacklustre, and dreadful value for money. Felt ripped off! No wonder the pub was empty! Don’t bother - the Hollybush a couple of miles up the road does a far better job at great home cooked food and offers much better value for money.

As a family, we've recently dined at the French Hen and it looks like it'll be the last time. The service was slow including taking drinks and food orders. The staff didn't seem confident in what they were doing and when the food did turn up, it was only slightly warm as if it had been hanging around for ages. There's no point asking for hot food as it would have taken even longer to be served so we had to put up with it. When we spoke with the staff about it, they said there was nothing that they could do... Simple as that! For the price, you'd expect premium meals. These were anything but and I would describe it as standard pub grub. We came away feeling disappointed and let down.

We had lunch at the French Hen today. There was a good choice of food for meat eaters but not for my vegetarian daughter and vegan son. There was a vegetarian lasagne and a chilli but no vegetarian or vegan roast dinner option which is what they wanted. My daughter couldn't have the lasagne or chilli as they both contained courgette which she's allergic to. Both had to basically have just a plate of vegetables. Come on French Hen, get your act together! It's not unreasonable for customers to expect more vegetarian and vegan options in this day and age! We'll think twice before coming back.

Food was not good. It’s as simple as that. Gammon was inedible, chips were cheap. Not sure whether it was a cheap menu for “eat out to help out” but would not have paid full price. We visited the French Hen today, arriving at 2.05pm. We were served drinks and then we asked for the lunch menu. We were told lunch had finished. No problem we thought. We sat down and then watched almost immediately the girl from behind the bar, youngish with blond hair, bring out cutlery for other customers. Obviously we thought they were here before 2. Some 20 minutes later their food arrived. I asked a shorter lady with dark shoulder length hair, what time the bar service finished and she said 2:30. It was by now 2:25pm. I asked why we weren’t served and she said maybe they had run out of bread?? She’s also said the couple she had served, not with bread arrived at 2:10 pm. Feeling a bit put out, as we visit this pub a lot, I said it would put us off coming for lunch again. The dark haired lady said, that’s fine, and left! Not great customer service....shame really as we love this little pub.

This place is filthy, when checking in the room it really smelt musky and the windows were wide open (in February) clearly to get rid of the smell, The bathroom is covered in rust and dirt, the knobs on the shower were black and filthy as were the shower head and rail, the shower didn’t heat up at all so I had to have a cold shower (see photos) The light switch in my room was disgusting and clearly hasn’t been cleaned in months as it’s sticky and has dirty finger marks all over it (see photos) The door to my room is dirty with black marks all over it (see photos) The door for residents to get in is the worst, mud on the floor, disgusting carpet and the door has paint all falling off (see photos) The curtains are stained with tea and coffee and what looks like blood (see photo) Where the kettle is it’s covered in tea and coffee marks and the kettle is disgusting inside (see photos) My bed looked like it hadn’t been changed from the previous guest, it didn’t smell fresh and was all creased, I asked them to change it when I was out which they did but it was still smelly, I actually asked if my room had been cleaned from the last guest, The staff are all quite young and are not really bothered about the job, all to busy standing together laughing, giggling and talking about Instagram and the dates they went on, eating sweets and crisps and using mobile phones to notice people waiting at the bar, Food was actually ok, long waiting time though, 45 minutes for a sandwich, also on Sunday food finished at 6, I asked at literally 6.02 for a sandwich as I’d been at work all day and was told no, even though I’m a resident, 25 minutes later the barmaids friends and boyfriend asked for food and she said “yeah were finished but I’ll put in through” her name was Ellie, really thin, brown/black hair, loads of rings and brackets and big hooped ear rings, Only nice member of staff was the ginger one, she make a bit of chit chat and was on the ball, sadly mainly worked in the restaurant though, The WiFi is absolutely terrible, most the time you can’t find it, when you do it just says “no internet connection” when I asked about it I was told this is the country, but they advertise “free food WiFi” on the website, I hardly slept as you can hear down stairs, doors banging, chairs being dragged on the floor, hand dryer from the toilet and general laughing and shouting all throughout the day, I stayed 1 night out of my 3 nights booked, the hotel only has 3 guest rooms so they really should be spot on, I didn’t feel like I was a guest and the staff made no effort to speak to me at all, disgusting attitude, I found a lovely little place down the road called the seven stars which was as absolutely amazing !!!

I had lunch at the French Hen today and was very disappointed. I am vegetarian and the (V) next to the whitebait made me wonder whether the chef actually knew what vegetarian food was - but I kept an open mind. The mushroom starter was served with half a barely-cooked, part-baked baguette which let the starter down. There was only one vegetarian option for the main meal and I must say it’s the first time I’ve been served something where I could not be sure of what was on my plate! The sausages were not sausages - they were more like rissoles; I couldn’t even discern what was in them and had to get my husband to taste them to check there was no meat, the reason being that I thought I might have been served the wrong meal. The rich onion gravy was an onion flash fried with a tin of tomatoes chucked in - all served with a spoonful of unseasoned peas. I love peas but had expected something a little closer to French cuisine than non-bangers, mash and peas served with a vinegary tomato sauce. It certainly didn’t live up to the description and I would have sent it back if we hadn’t been pressed for time.

We have dined here for many years and like the basic floor boards and plain furnishing theme which may not suit everyone. Menu slightly limited but varied and very generous portions, although the standard of cooking has slipped a little recently. The staff are always very pleasant but service is not as good as it was. Our last visit, albeit on a busy Saturday evening, was extremely slow and haphazard. A long time to serve drinks and not all served together. Ridiculously long wait for food. Deserts and coffee ordered at the same time, coffee arrived 20 minutes later, another 15 minutes for first deserts then another 15 minutes for last desert. Three hours for two courses and drinks, we were almost falling asleep.

I stayed at the French Hen for a week while I visited family in the Halesowen area. Adele and Becci were simply wonderful and made me feel welcome from the first time I stepped through the door. The staff were friendly, the pub has beautiful indoor pub and spacious dining area as well as fabulous views of the Clent countryside from the outdoor patio. What I love about the Hen is it doesn’t get as crowded as close Clent pubs like the Fountain or Vine even though it should. Dog friendly bar filled with locals which is always fun to sit in and meet new friends. The food is truly phenomenal, served quickly, from the mussels, lamb shoulder, Ploughmans or baguettes, the food is high quality, homemade and delicious. Stay here rather than the Premier Inn on Hagley mile, the double room is light, airy, sunny and a true respite. Plus a short walk up the stairs after a craft beer or glass of wine from a great wine list! Clent Hill’s are five minutes up the road for a great hike or run. There was always a smile when I walked in through the door. Thank you so much for a home away from home see you soon!

It was supposed to be our anniversary Sunday lunch. We were first to arrive and our order was taken very soon after arriving. My husband and I ordered Lamb, my mother ordered Turkey. It looked very appetising when it arrived, and the veg were served in separate dishes to help ourselves.........great........... Well, not so great, as the Lamb was tuff, (moms Turkey was fine) we brought it home for the dog (couldn't eat it), the veg was so hard I couldn't cut through the carrots and cauliflower. We complained to the waitress who informed us that the veg is cooked al dante, well I know when veg is cooked al dante style, they are a little firm than when fully cooked, but these were UNDERCOOKED, almost raw, Very disappointing. We did have a desert, mom had the crumble and custard (very good) I had the cheesecake (very good) but my husband requested the ice cream. He was given two tiny scoops of ice cream in a half pint glass...........WHY......... We paid the bill and waited for our change............ we waited and waited and waited for about 10 minutes when we had to attract the attention of another waitress and requested our change. She went to get our change and informed us that the original waitress had put it on the counter and forgotten it.

We arrived at 11.50 having booked a table at 12 to find doors shut. Member of staff opened door to say we don't open til 12. Waiting outside was a family with a child in a wheelchair, plus my party for my mums 95th birthday. A more appropriate response could have been - we don't start serving til 12 but you are welcome to come in out of the cold. We entered just before 12 and were shown to our table. Drinks orders taken at 12.10 and menus left.. We had asked what the pie of the day was and been told it was steak in red wine. 3 of us chose this. At the point of order 12.30 we were there was no pie as meat had only just been delivered. No apology was made. The fish of the was salmon, thus restricting another choice since I cannot believe they would have beer battered that. However we were lucky as the big party who arrived at 1 were told neither pie nor any fish was available. Our meals finally arrived at 1.05, afterI had chased. Again no apology. Poor customer service was standing out. I was not offered the choice of sauce for my mussels dish.

First the negatives - Service was slow and patchy, the prawn skewer was just 5 frozen smallish prawns yet it cost over £7, the side of chips were undercooked and soggy, and the vegetarian Moroccan dish was insubstantial. On the plus side, it is a lovely cosy restaurant and the steaks that two of us had as mains were good. Needs to sharpen up if they want customers to re-visit.

We booked late and to be honest our expectations were not high but we were all pleasantly surprised. The service was good the food good and the restaurant had a nice Christmassy atmosphere. Jane A

I live in France. Whilst visiting my Mom in hospital in the area I decided to take my son to have some authentic French food. Nothing was authentic. Moules marinieres were soaked in a butter sauce. Fish was inedible because of horrible after taste. We left the majority of our main course. Sorry I ve never written a negative post before but I certainly expected better

Staff were pleasant and friendly. We sat in the dining room which did lack atmosphere and the chairs are wooden so hard and not very comfortable. We opted for the 2 course lunch for 11.95. The starters were okayish my friend had the mushrooms which he said were nice I had whitebait which were slightly overdone, main courses were prawn and smoked salmon salad (far too much salad) and my friend had the pie which he said was tasty. All in all in between average and good and yes I would return for lunch.

It’s 20 years since I last lived near here and used to go past without even noticing it - but today we were looking for something different!

We had a beautiful meal at the French Hen tonight. When we arrived we were seated promptly and our waitress lit the fire for us! The food was excellent and they were very accommodating for my wife who is celiac. The waitress was excellent too. They also had a jazz band on which just made our evening. Would definitely come again!

Visited in glorious weather (too hot actually) and braved the outside heat and wasps. This is a nice place with good lunch deals worth a try. We picked a bit of a dud main meal (veggie sausages & mash) but the starters were tasty. Staff were very friendly and clearly working hard in the hot sun.

This is a bit of an oddity, a French styled bistro in a Country pub off the beaten track. The front door leads straight off the road frontage (separated only by chevron parking) and you turn right for the Dining area and rleft for the bar. straight leads to the bottom of the stairs to the rooms, on the left is another dining area (noted a separate lunch and function menu) and straight on further leads to 2 garden drinking/eating areas separated by the gravel Car Park that wraps around the back of the pub. We had booked by phone earlier in the day and we were seated straight away. We delayed the drinks order to peruse the wine list of about 20 different wines and selection of gins. The wines are offered by glass (small or large) and by half or full bottle. The menu is reasonable, all mains have two accompaniments included. My wife went for a sirloin that she enjoyed. I had a goats cheese and spinach lasagne, unusual but very tasty. We shared dauphinoise potatoes and a side salad. The lasagne (a wonderful mixture of flavours) and potatoes were clearly microwaved - so very very hot - but excellent. The salad was mainly lettuce with some onion, a tomato and some pepper. The dressing was tasty. The mains took 25 minutes to arrive (there were 2 other diners only (1900 on a Friday night)). Service was pleasant enough. The dining chairs are very hard, another customer asked for cushion!. Our bill came to £41. Overall we enjoyed it. Our scores out of 10. Food 10; Ambience 8; Service 8; Value for Money 8.

Went with friends for Saturday night dinner. Whereas the food was good, there was a slight problem of communication on the drinks order. I only mention it because it was a basic error between the waitress and the bar staff, which should not have occurred. Siting of a gambling machine just inside the main entrance is a little irritating.

Booked to celebrate my husbands birthday with friends, it was our first visit so I was a bit apprehensive as not heard anyone say they had been, but decided to try it and I can say we were not disappointed and will definitely be returning. The food was cooked well and really fresh, not one member of the group had a bad word to say about their meal from stater to the pudding all lovely. Also I can’t finish my review without saying that all the staff from bar to waiting staff were polite, efficient and very friendly. Thanks to the French Hen for a lovely start to my husbands birthday.

Booked here for a pre - christmas dinner but had the most awful evening. Dining room full of rowdies and drunks who were obviously staying overnight.Staff intimated by them and frightened to ask them to calm down.

Sunday lunch was excellent. Roast beef and veg cooked to a T. Great fixed price menu with plenty of choice, other dishes available for those not wanting the roast.

Nice atmosphere and staff pleasent. Good choice of dishes. Overall average to good - nothing to rave about. That said my French onion soup was exellent . I had ham and cheese salad - ham was from a processed joint but tasty. Step uncle had a problem with communicating to the staff on how he wanted his eggs cooked which was not completed to his satisfaction - no charge for his meal so resolved amicably. Sweets where good - I had triffle and my wife has cheesecake which was very nice. Would not rush back ot equaaly would call in again if in area.

Went last night for the first time, the restaurant lacked ambience and was literally too cold. Reasonably priced menu and friendly enough young staff but lack of attention to detail. Gaming machine inside the front door was the killer for me. Left me cold all round!

We used this restaurant quite frequently when it first opened, we used to really enjoy it here however it’s definitely gone downhill over the years, not what it once was unfortunately.

A past favourite pub but disappointed this time. My partner ordered the steak and ale pie and I had the belly pork. When mine came it was literally a slab of pork fat, even the waitress commented that it looked awful. My plate was returned to the kitchen but the replacement was not that good either, this time so overcooked the knife couldn't cut through it, on top of that my partner had finished his meal so we ate separately. We had hoped for an evening out together but the overall standard was very disappointing

Popped in here, this lunchtime,as its on our way home. Lovely pub inside and outside area looks good too. Hubby had fish and chips and I had the Chip Shop Platter. The portions were big and the fish was delicious, not all batter like some places. We were both full afterwards. This pub is local to us and we have seen staff come and go and a few refubs. This time, they seem to have got it right. Would recommend the food and service to all.
