the golden city restaurant in South Holland

Ordered online via Bigfoodie platform expecting meal to be delivered. This was not the case as I ended up having to collect. Food wasn't ready at given collection time & had to wait for 10/15 mins. Food was ok (Ribs very fatty & fried rice seemed to have as many peas as rice - not keen on peas in my rice) but nothing to shout about & certainly not worthy of the praises sung by others. Perhaps I have too many fond memories of when old Tom held the reigns of Spalding's first Chinese Restaurant.

Blitzed & tasteless 1/2 duck (must have been a duckling going by the portion size) Freezing cold pancakes stuck together. First & last time we eat from this establishment.

Disgusting food. Overcooked. Reheated. Dried out rubbish. Waited 20 minutes but none of it was fresh cooked. Never again will I go here

Dined in at the restaurant tonight and will definitely return. Food was really delicious and the service was great. Such a lovely young lady on the desk and waiting, on the tables. Thank you.

Fantastic service and great food. A friend and I went for dinner last night and we so impressed with the fast service. Food was great too and the house wine was nice. This is a hidden gem in spalding and I thoroughly recommend it. Reasonable prices too.

Tried The Golden City for the first time last weekend and everything was fantastic. The staff were friendly and approachable and the food was the best Chinese food I have had in a long time. I even brought home a few leftovers for the next day and I never do that, even with a takeaway! Excellent social distancing measures in place as well and we felt perfectly safe from the moment we entered.

Booked a seat for the window. But I didn't get that. The girl that served us wasn't very polite the lad was ok. Chicken balls are still big and dry. Still not as good as when Tom was there. Will maybe go back next year. 🤔

After seeing glowing reviews about The Golden City i decided to try the food while visiting friends in Spalding. I ask for a beef curry hoping that the meat would be nice and tender ehich i was assured it would be. It must be the worst curry i have ever tasted. No flavour and the meat was like chewing cardboard. The egg fried rice had no flavour and the pancake roll i also ordered was absolute rubbish. If ever i am back in Spalding i wont be wasting my money again at this place. Very dissapointed after the other reviews

First time visiting, fantastic food and staff are very nice and friendly. They gave me a free pot of ice cream due to it being my birthday aswell! Brilliant place, definetely will come back :)

We stopped here for a dinner on our way from London to Lincoln. Eating in was fantastic experience. Two young gentlemen were very polite and helpful and giving great table service. Chef lady personally assisted my girlfriend with her selection. Food was yummy, honest and freshly prepared. Prices are very good too. Overall very nice experience. Thank you

We travel 52 miles each way to get our take a way its one of the best ones ive found its tastey and you get plenty for your money I will always come here even though i live in skegness thats how good it is .

I’ve been coming to this chinese for years and it never disappoints. The food is great quality and extremely tasty. Other Chinese’s in spalding the food seems to be greasy and cheap but golden city is next level. The roast chicken Chinese style is delicious I highly recommend. The restaurant is very authentic but well kept. The food came quickly and everything was delicious. Best chinese in spalding.

I haven't been to this restaurant for about a year. We used to go there under the previous owner. Why did we stop going? Four of us visited on Saturday night and the food was still first class. Not greasy or salty to cover the blandness. Just well cooked and presented food with ingredients you could taste. My guests, wife I all commented about the quality of the food. It's so hard to find quality like this. Fed up of cheap quality Chinese food , this little Cantonese Restaurant is still the best and only place I will now eat with guests when in Spalding.

I used to be a delivery driver and I know most of the stuff here is from Iceland. It’s overpriced and small portions compared to other chineses in town. Only good thing was the chow mien! Was absolutely banging🔥

Simply awful, worst Chinese in Spalding. I had chicken curry, chicken is reconstituted, large chunks of it. But worse it had no taste if I made a gravy source it would have more flavour. Wife had chow mien which was swimming in grease. I would give zero stars if I could. Honestly that bad.

Another great night at the GOLDEN CITY, 7 of us there tonight food was great staff great nice atmosphere ,Rebecca and Andrew the new owners go out of their way to make our night enjoyable keep it up.

Great food lovely friendly people

Dispite living in Spalding for 8 years this was the first time we had ever been to Golden City. How I wish we had found it before! The welcome was warm and friendly, and the table was in a nice position. The decor might be a little nostalgicly 70s, but it is spotlessly clean and well cared for. Our drinks came quickly and after ordering our meal it arrived in about 8 minutes! I love the candle fueled warming trays on the table, so delightful and they kept the food hot throughout the meal. The food was delicious and we even indulged in banana fritters with syrup and ice cream. Naughty but nice . Even the bill was a nice surprise. We will be back.

Been here on a number of occasions and was here again on Thursday last week with some family and friends. A more authentic Chinese restaurant you would be hard pushed to find. The food has always been to a very very high standard. Worth a mention are the ribs, crispy duck and any chow mein dish. The service is always welcoming and pleasant. The portions are large and the prices fair. Highly recommended.

We had a family evening and decided to order a Takeaway from Golden City! Big mistake! Placed order, collected and when got home found food not only lukewarm at best, but one of dishes ordered over phone was missing. When rang restaurant back they had not written the dish down on order so got missed off. Had to go back into town to collect, so one of us ate after everyone else. Nearly £60 for total bill so high end prices for this type of cuisine. Following morning one of us is suffering with diarrhoea and sickness and although can not prove it is as a result of this meal, no smoke without fire shall we say!! Back in the day this was arguably the best restaurant in Spalding, and definitely the best Chinese food in the area, and was ran like clock work by Tom and Lan, serving excellent quality (and piping hot) food! What a shame this restaurants’ level of service and quality of food appears to be very much on the wane. We will not be using Golden City for the foreseeable future. End of an era...... Eat here at your own risk! We won’t be anymore......

Food is always lovely here and great quality. The prawn toasts are exceptional and different to the usual ones you get. The service is very friendly and they are always very grateful of your custom.

I usually order from here for a takeaway , and the take away is excellent. Last night me and my friend decided to eat in and the restaurant did not disappoint, the food is amazing! The service is Great, the lady serving us was so happy to help and assist us. Definitely recommend!

Friendly staff but limited choice on the menu - no options for satay, crispy salt & pepper or salt & chilli kind of dishes that you normally get in Chinese restaurants. The chicken curry did not have much flavour.

Having visited this restaurant many times over the years, we thought we would take a chance and see how it had changed since Tom’s retirement. The staff were pleasant and welcoming ,however when it came to service we were disappointed this we can only put down to the kitchen staff not being able to prepare the order so that it came out at the same time. Dishes were sporadically delivered with large gaps between being served, the portion sizes have shrunk but prices have massively increased (most rice dishes started at £6.50 per portion) and the quality of food was not as expected. I must add that this was not a busy time in the restaurant. Therefore I can safely say this restaurant is now off the list of good Chinese food for me.

In all our 11 years of living in Spalding, last weekend was our first visit to this little gem! The restaurant is spotless, the service is friendly and attentive and the food was fresh and delicious. The prawn crackers were freshly made (twice as soooo good) and the shrimp curry took me back to a long time ago and something that has taken all this time to replicate so well. We will definitely return.

We've been to the golden city restaurant several times, over the past couple of months. The food and service have been excellent every time . Very clean. We would recommend trying.

Absolutely disgusting 5 of us went there 2 of the group had to use the toilet in the restaurant the food came straight out of them.overpriced worst chinese all of us ever had in our life .all of us were on the toilet all night and day don't know how it's still open tasteless all dishes had same horrible taste to it paid £140 just to sit on toilet for 2days .enter at your own risk

A very traditional(slightly old fashioned) Chinese restaurant. Stopped in desperation but apart from some overuse if salt and msg the food was actually surprisingly good. Desperately quiet when we were there, the lady Maitre d' was friendly and efficient. Yes if I find myself near I would go back, it's good, better by far than many.

Went here on the off chance, and so please we did.Maybe a little bit dated inside, but is clean and well maintained.Service was excellent. and the food was without doubt the best Chinese we have eaten! All served hot, and everything was delicious, and to top it all what was left was given to us in containers to take away! Also serves a few English dishes, so there should be something for everyone.Definitely will be using this place again to sit in and also for takeaways!

We used this restaurant weekly in the late 80's early 90's haven't been to have a sit down meal for at least 20 years. The food tonight was as good as it was then. Tom as always a very good host. Always friendly. Highly recommend.

Love going there for a meal. Have gone in for parents birthdays and the staff are friendly and nice. It may be a bit small and dated in its decor but the food is perfect.

I am someone who loves Chinese food but unfortunately the food we had from The golden city really wasn't up to scratch! Crispy shredded beef was more like soggy shredded beef (however there was some flavour). The chicken in black bean sauce was so watery, that there was a puddle of it in the bottom of the plastic bag! Who goes to a Chinese and spends £20 and doesn't get prawn crackers free? Serious, £3 for some greasy prawn crackers? A real shame!

Ha sido bastante tiempo desde que tuvimos comida en este restaurante (no hay razón particular por qué no), pero en dos ocasiones recientemente estuvimos en Spalding en 6/7 de la tarde, así que decidí probar. La bienvenida que recibimos de Tom y su personal era genial, la comida era deliciosa y el servicio fue estupendo. Parece como si el restaurante ha sido recientemente decoradas a un alto nivel, así que nos quedamos muy contentos que decidimos intentarlo de nuevo y esperamos volver pronto.

En una reciente visita a la zona que decidimos llevar curry, tuve especial y mi esposa pollo dulce y amarga. Mi curry era tan grasienta y sosa y pollo de mi esposa estaba seco, así que después de una boca llena decidimos tirar la comida. Este chino era genial hace unos pocos años, pero tan pobre.

The best chinese food for miles, we come here all the time to eat in and take away. Wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Amazing staff!!

Situado al final de la Luna Creciente, la "otra" calle principal del centro de la ciudad tiene un ambiente tradicional con una buena variedad y calidad de la comida que se puede esperar. No esperes la más novedosa decoración más moderna es la tradición que lo probamos para que como se ve desde muchos ya consejo es muy respetado.

Probably one of the longest running Chinese restaurants in Spalding but still definitely the best by far. Can be on the pricy side compared to others but in my opinion definitely worth the bit extra. Food is the best

4 of us visited the restaurant thursday night, the food was really tasty and hot and the owner and waitress were really helpful, we had the set meal, not so much a meal as a feast could not eat it all but no problem here straight away we offered to have the rest of the meal put into container to take home, so we had a meal out and a takeaway. this is the best chinese food in Spalding by far ,the owner has run the restaurant for the last 40 yes 40 years, he must be doing something right, will visit again shortly

We visited the Golden Tree on a Saturday night and it was very busy. People were ordering takeaways and the seating area was full. Which goes to show how good the food is. The restaurant has been recently decorated and looks very airy, the ladies bathroom is very good, the hand drier needs improving though. Back to the food, the menu is quite vast and mixture of styles. We had a starter of spring rolls, which would have been nicer if they supplied a dipping sauce but we asked for and they obliged. I had lemon chicken which was very tasty and cooked very well. I sampled a beef dish and that was lovely too. You definitely need to book as space is quite limited but this adds the ambience of the restaurant.

This is often an overlooked Chinese as it's not central to town or on any roads that are heavily used, the food is ok and the price is fair but nothing outstanding just your average run of the mill Chinese takeaway.

I have eaten here since I was a child and in my opinion no other Chinese food compares to it. It is a bit pricier than the other local restaurants but worth every penny. The restaurant is always very clean, food is quick and delicious and the staff are welcoming. We now take our children to eat here and they love it too!

Early on a Sunday evening the other customers were for takeaways, and the Golden City is clearly a popular choice for locals. The restaurant area was a little cramped but the atmosphere was welcoming and everything was spick and span. There was plenty of choice on the menu and the food was well cooked and well presented. Definitely worth another visit.

While I have been here many times, compared to other local chinese restaurants this one can be hidden and overshadowed. While the food is good, it doesn't stand out compared to others but I have never complained personally. Take away is also available and the staff are very pleasant.
