The Golden Bridge in Sefton

I have never left a review before but I feel compelled to since reading borderline ones. My husband and our two children came to the Sunday lunch buffet - £16.90 for adults and £10.90 for children. Upon entering the restaurant, I was happy to see traditional Chinese restaurant decor. Then I spotted the buffet. At first, my greedy eyes thought oh that looks quite small. How silly I was! On offer was hot chicken and sweet corn soup - seasoned well and great consistency. Prawn cracker are brought to your table. Then we assaulted the starters. What a great selection which is frequently replenished by the hard-working staff! On offer is prawn toast, veg spring rolls, salt and pepper wings, salt and pepper fish bites, chicken skewers, juicy ribs, ham egg foo young, crispy seaweed and duck pancakes you make up yourself. All of these tasty morsels were hot and fresh. Then on the mains you have egg fried rice, noodles and chips with dishes including sweet and sour chicken, chicken curry, beef green pepper, bbq char Sui pork, crispy chilli beef, mixed veg in oyster sauce (juicy mushrooms in this) and prawns in a light sauce. I tried most of these and was really happy with the flavour and hotness of each. Then there was the dessert table - jelly, fresh fruit and banana fritters! What a bonus! Overall, the attentive staff, great price and fresh food made this an absolute treat. Lovely for our kids to go and try multiple dishes and different flavours. They didn’t even want to go and not they’re asking to back! Well done Golden Bridge! We will be back and with more people!

The food was mediocre but it’s a ducking disgrace I haft to take out a second mortgage to afford this scran I’m Fumming 40 pound for 5 plastic containers 3 soups don’t get me wrong food weren’t the worse but definitely a joke the amount of money there charging I’m ducking livid as you can see in the image I paid 38 pound for all this I don’t recommend going there until they put out reasonable prices I actually am speechless I can’t believe how little I got for 40 pound I could cheff all this up my self for 10 pound they are robing

Usually a nice comfortable tasty eat, had special Chow Mien tonight, absolutely bland and underwhelming 😑kids plain rice an curry sauce , ok

This is one of the best chippys and the staff are the politest people ever. Highly recommended

Best Chinese take away we’ve had for a very long time! Read earlier review about wait time. Things must’ve drastically improved since then as was promised 15 min wait when I called and when I arrived 15 mins later meal was ready immediately. The food was really tasty. We had chicken and cashew nuts and crispy shredded chicken sweet and sour with rice and salt and pepper chips. All were great. Will be back soon. Many thanks.

Service is always good, smiley and friendly, even the young lads who come home from school then help mum in the chippy. Food is generally good, last visit curry was not that nice, chips are good and Chinese meals have always been tasty. The place always looks clean. I travel to this place from further in Ashton as it is better than any local Chinese takeaway.

Good food, salt & pepper chicken and salt & pepper chips are amazing and the fish was superb, right amount of batter 👌🏻 Only call in occasionally but never had a bad takeaway, recommended ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Unfortunately ordered a takeaway, told 45 minutes, arrived on time, but ended up waiting another 30 minutes! Shame as their food is nice but they are very unrealistic in their timings for collection. Not the only one waiting excessive times, they should be honest and say they can't take anymore orders

It is often a takeaway for us from here since we moved to Formby as we have had not the opportunity to have a sit down, whether we wanted the comfort of our home or we were not dressed up enough. The takeaway crispy aromatic duck was ordered by Hayley and I must say it was tasty. It was invented by the chinese in London Chinatown in the latter half of the 20th century and is a signature dish in many Chinese restaurants in the UK. It's based on the original dish, Peking duck. The chicken sweet corn soup was a thumbs up from our lady. The prawn sesame toast was apparently not cooked as well as she liked and no Malaysian chilli sauce. I ordered the yung chow fried rice for her which was ordinary. The fried rice took me back to the times when I was a chef in China Joe in London as a teenager. Golden Bridge is probably the best chinese in Formby thanks to the owner.

As mentioned in reviews by other people the food is OK. Can be a bit hit and miss but my issue is not with the food it's the service. I sometimes go to this chippy to by just chips. Saturday night the whole family come around for tea (up to 14 people)and a cheat is to buy the chips in when we want them to add to the meal. In the past I have rang the Golden Bridge to order 3 large portions of chips. 1 person accepts my order only for somebody to ring me back and tell me no chips for over an hour yet when i walk in anyway i get served within 10 minutes. Tonight I walk in and ask for 2 large portions of chips only to be told ran out of chips. No chips for over half an hour. It doesn't take half an hour for a chippy to cook chips. Only 1 person in the shop. They just don't want custom of only chips. But they are a chippy, and for the woman behind the counter to start shouting at me kind of proves me right. I know I'm not going to hurt their takings by taking my business elsewhere but on principle I'm afraid I won't be eating from there again.

OK chippy. Some days can be lovely, others it's awful. Often give wrong items on order and seems like they just cant be bothered. Shame as could be great. Why people say it's the best around is beyond me when you have sunnys and Renfrews nearby. It's OK. Just hope you get it on a food day!

Food is nice most of time but sometimes a lucky dip! Fish looked like it had been sat there for days, chips undercooked, really bad. Although sometimes food is lovely, just double check your order if you can to make sure they got it right before you leave, as many many times they give wrong items. On a Sunday make sure you get in early as this chippy has no chips after 8.30pm even though it closes at 9pm!!!!!!!! Its gone worse. On a Sunday evening they may as well not even bother staying open as they just seem like they can't be bothered!

We stopped off here some weeks ago as we returned from a day out, it was a Bank Holiday and there weren't many places open, so we were happy to find it. We weren't disappointed on our first visit here, as the friendliness of the staff was a bonus, and the fish was lovely and white, fresh and plentiful. I called again yesterday on the way home from work and once again quality fish and a big fish too! To br honest plenty of chips in the large portion requested but I'm sure they weren't cooked right then, as on the previous occasion they had been better as I remember. They gave me a bag of prawn crackers for free, which was a nice gesture. I left happy and will definitely add to my list and call again soon

A great little chippy serving all the usual favourites you would expect from chips, sausages, scallops etc, they also have decent Chinese meals to pick through, all in all a good place to grab food if you can't be bothered to cook one night.

Visited Sunday buffet.Cant fault the quality of the food it was outstanding and amazing value for money . Swift service with constant replenishment of food .More than enough choice. Several desserts but would be even better with ice cream ! .Thank you

Our 'go too' Chinese takeaway - has won awards and is a favourite locally.

Went for the Wednesday night buffet and it was lovely. Food variety was great, staff would bring more out of you asked them and they were really friendly. Would definitely recommend.

Literally the worse place ever !! They give me plain noodles and 4 pieces of dry beef , I rant to complain an she told me that's right an put it down.

Got food from there last night everyone of us ill will not be going back there again

Years ago this was the best restaurant in Formby, and our favourite (my 40th, my daughter's 18th) then it changed hands and went downhill very quickly. It's changed hands again and it's great again. Cleaned up, new decor, great food, great service and good prices, it's great to have an old friend back !

Generally a lovely chippy although it can be a bit hit & miss occasionally. Tonight's meat n potato pie, chips & gravy was gorgeous. One negative though, I asked for a small portion of chips and was given a large! Wayyy to many for me lol. Lovely staff,easy parking,reasonably priced, shop's a bit dated but hey ho. It's not a fine dining experience. A decent local chippy well worth a visit.

When it was in the centre of Formby, this was a great restaurant; small but really good, with excellent food. The last time I visited here was 22 years ago, and last night, although a great night with family, the food was average. I had the chicken in brandy sauce, which was utterly tasteless. Maybe I just picked the wrong thing. However, this place has been a busy restaurant for many, many years; they really need to plough some money back into the surroundings - and I don't mean a quick wallpaper job. The toilets are inadequate and are filthy!

Came here on a Friday night and had the special Friday set menu . Had hot & sour soup to start then we shared prawn toast , spring rolls , chicken satay , salt & pepper chicken wings , bbq ribs . Followed by the duck pancakes then I had beef ginger spring onion. Food was outstanding probably best Chinese Iv had . Service was good 😊

Great chips n gravy... fish ok.

Our family had a few takeaways from here during lockdown. It is not the best Chinese I have ever had but we do enjoy it as a treat every so often. I really enjoy the Beef In Black bean Sauce and the Duck With Pancakes but the Duck In Orange Sauce was not great as there was very little meat. The soups are tasty as are the spring rolls. Giving 4 stars and not 5 as could be improved but we still enjoy it.

The staff are so friendly and attentive. Atmosphere is lovely, but it is the food that makes this restaurant so good. Had the duck soup, salt and pepper ribs and sizzling beef. Lovely! Will be back soon. Highly recommend.🌞

Last time I got a take away from here a few years ago I was not impressed but decided to give them another try this evening . I love Chinese food but this was not nice I had the worst prawn toast I had ever tasted it was very soggy inside , spring rolls were tasteless, chicken satay was tough, seaweed over sugared, ribs were ok. My battered fish was ruined and soggy as the sauce was poured over it which begs the question why batter the fish? All in all a disappointment and will definitely not be trying again

RIBS in ok sauce , chips and chow main. Not cold chips , whatever this stuff is they gave instead of ribs and chow main. Make sure take cash to has they have no card payments. And will have to pay another £1.99 to get money out from local shop while they get order wrong.

This Chinese has improved so much over the years, every time we visit the food is amazing now and the buffet is such good value everything is piping hot and good quality of ingredients are used, good drinks choices fast and friendly service. Lovely Chinese.

Having travelled a long way to visit relatives in Formby, this is my ideal place to collect a takeaway or, if time allows, to eat in their superb restaurant.

Food was once excellent. However, I think msg is being added as I now have 'side effects' after eating there. There also appears to be a lack of staff.

Fuimos aquí para una comida familiar grande entre semana, que estaba reservada, así que no es exactamente ocupado. A mitad de la comida nos movieron para acomodar a otras personas, aunque el lugar estaba medio vacío, lo cual era una locura. Esta fue la guinda del pastel. Todo el lugar tiene una, deberías estar contento de que te hayamos permitido en actitud. Te tiran la comida en vez de servirla, ¡nunca empleas a la familia! Sería una comedia si no estuvieras pagando por el privilegio. Recomendaría un bar de Marte sentado en la acera afuera en lugar de entrar, este lugar no merece su dinero. En un punto positivo, nadie murió después de comer allí. Hay un montón de buenos lugares para comer cerca.

Absolutely love this place. Hands down the best chippy in the area. I've been going here since I was little as I grew up down the street. Love their sausages, fish and chips are excellent and their Chinese food is very tasty. I travel from Droylsden for the gravy alone!

Visited this restaurant in formby recently for a family birthday celebration the food is presented in a timely manner but some of the staff are so rude .

At teatime on Wednesday 16th January 2019, my family and I visited the Golden Bridge for our evening meal. I have not been in this restaurant for quite some time, in fact, I think it has changed ownership since my last visit. Drinks were served as soon as we sat down. Our children, aged 2 and 7, were well looked after. Every item of food that we ate from the buffet was excellent. The cost of our meal was very reasonable indeed and the service throughout was first class.

Reservamos una mesa para ocho personas, a la llegada, llevándolas directamente a los locales de la mesa, bien distribuidas, cómodas y con mucho espacio para todos nosotros. Bebidas ordenadas y entregadas muy rápidamente. Pidió un banquete con dos comidas extras. La sopa de pollo con maíz dulce llegó en cinco minutos, incluyendo un montón de galletas de gambas. Los platos principales llegaron a los cinco minutos de la sopa. Un montón de platos diferentes bien presentados no podían fallar en ninguno de ellos. Estaban deliciosos. No pudieron terminar todos. Todos los postres tenían helados muy buenos. El precio medio con bebidas llegó a 17. 50 cada uno.

La comida era increíble, pato muy húmedo y carnoso, sin grasa, un montón de carne en pato cuarto. Sopa y costillas tan sabrosas, que no tenían suficiente espacio para el plato principal cuando las tenía, muy sabrosas. Sólo me quejo de que este restaurante podría tener mucho más beneficio y hacer una noche agradable si es un restaurante mejorado y tenía una buena conexión a internet con menú. Todos apartados, mientras que los pedidos telefónicos no se detienen y la gente se complace en no recibirlos. Sin duda volvería aquí de nuevo

Slowly dropping standards needs to improve before visiting again

Hemos estado aquí varias veces y nunca me ha decepcionado. La comida es muy buena y el personal es muy atento. No entiendo por qué no está más ocupado, pero bueno, al menos no tenemos que preocuparnos por reservar. Habría dado 9/10 si pudiera.

We go to this little gem nearly every Sunday for lunch and I must say that the food is very good, restaurant is clean, well decorated and tidy, staff friendly and good value for money as you can keep going back for more.

No he estado en el Golden Bridge durante más de una década. 40 personas asistieron a la buffet + hoy y el servicio era excelente. La comida era mantenido caliente y repuesto con un montón de variedad. En general una excelente comida que estaba muy bien en relación calidad-precio. Lo único que tengo que decir es mover la mesa de comida para que la cola no cuadra en entrada/salida de sus asientos!

A lovely chinese! U cant beat it, always fresh and decent portion sizes, they are friendly and good prices too, not like most of them these days and they cook there own chips not frozen ones like most do now, i wont ever go no where else now. Keep it up guys

Absolutely disgusting! If I could take the one star rating away I would. Asked for chips and gravy, ended up with chips and grease; with maybe a spoonful of gravy thrown on just for the sake of it. This food was totally inconsumable. I really do not know how they think it’s acceptable to serve food in the state in which we received ours. Plan to go to the food standards agency with this. Avoid like the plague if you want to eat and live to tell the tale; as that was a heartattack in a takeaway tray.

I only gave one star as I couldn’t give no stars ! The Chinese food is completely tasteless We had , supposedly , Tai Green Curry , veg Satay and veg red curry !! They were all completely the same cheap veg in what looked like brown water ! I also had a soup which again was totally tasteless !! We will never be going back complete waste of £17 😡 AVOID

El Golden Bridge es un tradicional restaurante chino decorado con muy buen gusto. El menú tiene todo lo que pueda desear de un restaurante chino. El buffet del domingo está bien, simplemente fantástico. El buffet también es en la noche del miércoles. Si llega en tren a Formby el restaurante está a 5 minutos a pie. Realmente debería probar. Disfrutar.

Having been totally gutted gina and Lee sold the business to return to Hong Kong, I work away for weeks at a time, always looking forward to Lee's cooking as a treat on my return, them days have sadly gone, I gave it a try under the new management, even asked if the ingredients etc was the same, I was blatantly lied to, instead I was given less than average quality, food tasted like its been around for hours, not cooked fresh as once was, I'll never taste the crispy chilli beef, the chicken curry (the sauce which I believe was the best Chinese curry sauce ever!) again. I won't be going back.

No he estado aquí en años, niños como comida china, así que decidimos darle una oportunidad. Desde el principio hasta el final, el personal era encantador y la comida era muy sabrosa y caliente. Hacen un menú muy niños a 6 libras. 50 y mi chicas disfrutaron. Las comidas estaban calientes sabrosos.

Mejor comida china que he probado en mucho tiempo. Nos sentamos, nos quedamos bastante tarde por la noche, pero aún así recibieron incluso con un pequeño niño cansado. No era barato, pero vale la pena el dinero. Dulce y agria pollo y arroz frito especial eran fantásticos. La fuente también era compartir entrantes realmente bueno. Personal atento y amable.

Think under new management food doesn't taste the same anymore had a steak and kidney pie it was burnt having been reheated to many times sausages don't look cooked. Wouldn't recommend shan't be returning.

Excellent service staff very helpful buffet was hot and kept topped up not too much so it goes cold and we went on a Friday and had the set menu all very good shame it's so empty as the food is lovely so are the staff more people should go

Went with work friends, staff are very pleasant and helpful. The prices are not that reasonable and maybe on the expensive side. The food was nice enjoyed it on a whole. Maybe a refurb wouldn't go a miss also.

Two appalling take aways over the past month - most thrown away. Used to be very good - but won't be going back. Maybe eating in is a better experience ?

A Chinese buffet for ten as a surprise for my sisters birthday.....excellent throughout.......pleasant staff and freshly cooked food as not many other customers on a Wednesday night......occasionally had to wait for some of the dishes to be replenished but at least it was fresh unlike some establishments...A good selection of dishes and the same goes for the sweets...... Enjoyed by everyone in the group

I've noticed a lot of people putting bad reviews from this buffet, but I was actually presently surprised by the food here. For £10 you can't really complain. The food was restocked depending on how many customers were in the restaurant. The chef seemed quite happy if you requested something to be filled if you just asked. Great prawn toast, duck pancakes, salt and chilli fish, sweet corn soup and beef black bean. What more could you want from a classic 70s feel Chinese restaurant.
