My family and I have been a regular to this chippy for some time now. In all honestly, it has been hit and miss in the past, but I have to say that when it's good, this chippy is one of the best My last visit was during a busy spell, but the staff were all still friendly and welcoming, all the same There's possibly a new chef (?) as there was definitely a difference in flavour in the chow mein we ordered, but it was delicious. Not overly greasy, full of flavour, and they didn't skimp out on the meat, either. Telephone orders (for pickup) tend to work best if you're making a large order; staff are always incredibly polite on the phone, and are happy to answer any questions you may have. Again, even during busier hours. Ste (owner) runs a tight ship. When he's on the shop floor, you know you're going to get the very best the shop can offer. You can tell there's that sense of pride about providing good service, and that it's something he wants to instil in the staff working there. There are also some standout servers- the type of staff that, when you walk in, you know you won't be disappointed, whatever you order. Overall, I would recommend you try this place out if you're in the area.

First time I went past this chip shop, I was pleasantly suprised by lovely and friendly it was. The lady (possibly Michelle) was so helpful in getting my order right and worked out the best way to order for me financially. The chips tasted like Blackpool, no fat or grease on them👍. The rest of the items were also spot on. I will definitely be going back in the future. Only downfall is delivery lol

Got chips peas and well suppose to have gravy even the peas were at the bottom not impressed.

I ordered Chicken Curry with Fried Rice also sweet an sour chicken with Fried Rice an a portion of chips. Twice the lady asked what I would like.so I repeated myself but .....when I got home I found a portion of boiled Rice with curry sauce. The fried rice was COLD an the chicken in batter was totally over cooked. As I already had waited 10mins we was all hungry so just ate what we could.

Called last night to order haddock and chips only to be told haddock no longer on the menu. Not a lover of cod so left without ordering. Menu only states fresh fish. When did this change and are there any plans to put haddock back on the menu

As a chippy it offers large portions at reasonable prices. Really impressed.

Asked for fish and chips and got looked at like I was asking for something gourmet. 40 minutes had passed, I noticed others that came later had received fish orders and then eventually after asking and trying to decipher what the front of house cook was saying I got my order. 6 miles later, got home and served up the fish and chips to the family but there was no delight. Unfortunately, all the fishies must have discovered resurrection and departed the batter before I got home. We had used this establishment on many an occasion (for years) but then stopped after finding an unidentified hair. Second chances though, we tried again but service, food and cost did not suffice. My advice, catch you’re own fish - it’s quicker.

I personally go there for gluten free meals which are very nice.

We recently had a diagnosis of celiac in the family, so finding a takeaway that is suitable wasn't easy until we found The Famous Gold Star we love the great choice of gluten free food on the menu so we can all share the same food and there is plenty to go around the staff are very helpful and friendly i certainly will be back again thank you

What a nightmare, they only had Fish and Chips, server didn't know if it was Cod or Haddock.., allpre cooked nder a reheat lamp. Chips small with more eyes than a secret agent . Best give a miss....mushy peas go ping ,

Best fish and chips I've had in ages. I came from halifax 65 miles away and would go back just for the fish and chips as they were that good !

Well, well, we asked my mother where should we call in for fish & chips! We were not disappointed… but, she did warn us to get one portion to share between the two of us. Fabulous fish and chips! And we were both stuffed!

Good quality and clean but super expensive compared to other local chippys. £6.50 for a fish. They say its Scottish cod but who cares where its from as long as its cheaper. So fish chips and peas will cost you over £10 during a cost of living crisis. I know the chippy has higher costs to but even a Hollands pie is now £2 here and yet just down the road you can get a Hollands pie for £1.50 So I cant see many buying fish and chips unless they have a high disposable income

If i was scoring on the service alone it would be 5stars the service was brilliant but I wasn't to happy with the food if I'm totally honest, I got a chicken curry and I prefer it spicy but it wasn't. The boiled was also lumpy an stuck together which wasn't nice.

Lovely fresh cooked fish and chips. We went for the Scottish haddock which was lovely and fresh! Friendly service and top notch food. I like that the portions come in eco friendly cardboard boxes and not polystyrene as that would have been a star reduction. Highly recommended!

The Chippy that lost it's way. At March 2002 prices, the chips do a fair impression of fried cardboard. The Gold Star used to be a brilliant chippy - no more. A change of management maybe? Whoever's frying isn't the best. I will be giving this place a miss.

I have ordered a fish from this chippy, and it wasn't hot in a middle, so I rang them up and explained that i wasn't happy ( normally, it was really nice each time I had it) , so I've asked for a replacement , which wasn't the problem, but when I came back to the shop, the boss of this place was very patronising and made me feel very uncomfortable whilst waiting for my order replacement. Won't be coming back again. Think it's important to respect your customers. No word of a lie it was burnt on the outside and cold in a middle. If it was cooked properly in a first place, then I wouldn't have asked to replace it, would I.. ???

I walked in and was instantly welcomed by pleasant and polite staff. The environment, cleanliness and hygiene were first class. The kebab was delightful. Crisp, fresh salad, beautifully seasoned donned meat and the Irish curry was the perfect balance of fruity and savory with a delightful kick of spice. After my whole experience, i didn’t just feel that I’d found Britain’s best chippy, but i felt part of the family. Thank you Golden Star and keep up the amazing job you do.

Goldstar is five star. When back home we always visit. What a range of food, fantastic. Can do telephone orders and turn up orders. Very busy for a reason - they do the job. Fantastic.

Love this chippy. Suggestion have your left door open for walk in orders and right door for phone order collections so you don't have a massive queue of people not knowing were to go! Maybe signs on or above the doors. Thanks for taking on board all comments though that alone is appreciated.

Great food. Just a shame you have to collect and they dont deliver. The order over the phone and then get in the queue is a bit of a pain. Other than that amazing. Gluten free food options the best.

Nearly 3 hours after placing our order and after numerous attempts to contact them we were eventually told that they hadn't even cooked our food yet! No they hadn't thought that it may be good manners to let us know!

La primera vez que mi amigo y yo tomamos una comida para llevar de este lugar. Pedimos el banquete para 2 (23 en total). Nos dijeron que estaría listo en 5 minutos, lo cual, si soy sincero, estaba un poco preocupado por ser tan rápido. ¡Cuando llegamos a casa, la cantidad de comida que teníamos era suficiente para alimentar a 4 personas! ! ! ¡Había montones! ! ! Y en cuanto al sabor, tengo que decir que fue el chino más sabroso que he probado. Nuestras dos comidas principales que elegimos fueron pollo satay (muy picante) y char sui chow Mein (con finos fideos). Lo disfruté muchísimo y sin duda volveremos. Todo el personal fue muy agradable y amable.

Este chippy es, de lejos, mi favorito en maghull. Siempre está ocupado, pero eso es porque es lo mejor. Han dado su opinión de que la opción de entrega sería excelente y los pagos con tarjeta. Pero no me puedo quejar, la comida y el personal son encantadores allí. La carne de chile crujiente agridulce? No donde más lo hace.

Just called in for some chips and gravy on the way home when I got home had one chip and threw the rest in the bin tried the gravy and that was no better by far the worst chips and gravy I have ever had in my life

Currently trying all the chippies locally to find a good one since our current one changed hands and went downhill. Went here because it was recommended on a local Facebook group. However we were sadly disappointed. The chips tasted like reheats that had been cooked in gone off oil. Hubby had a steak pie dinner and was ill after it. The only nice thing was the curry sauce. Won’t be visiting again.

Sorry just don’t see the point of ringing an order in if you don’t even start cooking it until 10 mins after you say it will be ready for collection? Not even an apology. Poor customer service

Food always comes out good from here, they have a great selection & the staff work very hard to achieve a fast flowing, friendly & professional service. We particularly enjoy the fish but we have had the fried rice dishes in the past aswell as various takeaway meals and have not been disappointed afterwards. Prices are cheap if anything and it's great to have you on our doorstep when we fancy a takeaway. Keep up the great work everyone 😉

I ordered prawn toast, special fried rice, portion of chips, steak pudding and crispy chilli beef. This is by far the tastiest, cleanest and consistent chippy in the Maghull area. Menu offers plenty for a family that can never decide on one meal type!

Used to get donner kebab's from them once a week but they've gone awful. Small, bits of old meat, off cuts, nobody actually doing their job of watching the pitta getting cooked, just left or forgotten about, big lad behind the counter more bothered about fish than his chippy ? WTF ? Didn't get one for a while and no different. Pity.

The famous gold star is a chip shop located between maghull and lydiate that serves everything from traditional good old fish and chips to Chinese meals or kebabs. The food is of an excellent quality and never fails to please. Best to call before arriving as it gets really busy! I recommend the fish chips & curry. Perfect!

This is a great takeaway with a large menu. We bought 10 different meals all of which were delicious. The staff are very helpful and friendly.

Like all the other meals....is superb. Spotless chippy,fish is excellent too. Chips are always freshly prepared.

Huge selection, fair prices, decent portion sizes. Always check your change though as sometimes you are short changed. I do think this is just as they are very busy though!

Nothing much to add to the title, chippies are all very much the same.......wide range of food, good value, quick service......what's not to like.

Great carry-out food: traditional, Chinese, pizzas etc, You can order online. Fish and chips are excellent. Strongly recommended.
