Most fish and chip shops pre cook the fish to provide a faster service. Gold River however only cook to order. This ensures the batter is crisp and holds the fish in a golden, crunchy cocoon. I have used this shop for over 20 years and maintain it is the best in Chelmsford. The fish cakes are also something to be tried, almost have a home made quality to them. Friendly staff, generous portion, good food

Excellent Fish & Chips at reasonable prices without compromising the portion size like others. I have tried all the others over the years but Gold River is the only one who turns out quality fish and chips without issue.

I visited following a Tripadvisor search - it did not disappoint at all. Cash only. Was asked to wait a short while whilst cod and chips were freshly cooked. Beautiful white fluffy cod. Golden batter. Perfect chips. Piping hot! Lovely, friendly staff. Highly recommend

Nice but nothing special, the chips were oily instead of horrible dry ones you get in most chip shops. The fish was nice but the batter wasn't great, no crunch and chewy. The search continues

From our experience The Gold River is by far the best Fish and Chip takeaway in Chelmsford. The fish is always freshly cooked as you wait, it will cause a minor hiatus to getting your food but it is worth it. The staff are invariably friendly and, especially in pre - Covid - days, happy to chat - naturally, providing they are not too busy. Most people currently seem to choose to place their order and wait outside for the friendly wave which announces it is ready for them to collect. Very happy to recommend The Gold River.

Gold River took over from what was Chucks , in Byron Road,Chelmsford . It has to be one of if not the best in Chelmsford . It has some parking at the front so picking up food is easy . The staff , particularly the chap who takes the orders are friendly and cheerful . One very nice thing is that everything is cooked fresh and not sitting around in the warmers , it means a short wait but its worth it . The portion sizes are superb . A large Cod is just that , and at £6.50 a portion , cheaper than the seaside . Two portions of cod and a large chips £15.90 and it more than caters for two people . Has all the other hippie favourites . Does child portions at £4 along with pensioner meals and lunchtime meal for them at £4 . The fish is always moist and the batter nice and crispy . Right now , with the serving area screened , people are encouraged to order and wait outside , but not forced to . You can only hope the idiots comply as its a small shop . Always a nice mid week treat to get Fish and Chips from Gold River and you dont break the bank doing it

Great to see the guys open again after the lockdown! This really is the best chippy in the Chelmsford area by some way IMHO, and I can't recommend them highly enough. Great fish and chips, burgers in batter, and the best large, home-made fishcakes you'll ever eat. Really missed their food and pleased to see them back.

Great little place for fresh hot and tasty fish and chips. Limited open hours so check before heading there. Easy walking distance within the Springfield park area. Got the large order which was plenty for two people with lots of chips. Plentiful Fish was white and meaty, mild flavor. Service is takeaway but is very quick. A small area outside for eating on a knee wall.

First time trying today, will be my regular place for fish and chips now. £11 for a large fish which was very large, medium chips, coke, curry sauce and a buttered roll. Good price, perfect batter, high quality fish and lovely chips. Curry sauce tops all curry sauces I've tried.

This is without doubt the best chip shop in Chelmsford, possibly the world. We have been using the Golden River for years and it is consistently the best. The staff are very friendly. The excellent food is extremely good value for money.

We also have a lazy chef at home, which allows us to have a regular treat from this great fish and chip shop. The cod is white, fresh and tasty. The chips are yummy. Vegetarians are spoiled with the vegetable rolls and those who like a sausage will not be disappointed either. Everything is perfect and always served by the friendly cooks, with a smile. The shop is in the Byron Road parade, approached from the town centre via Springfield Road, then along Navigation Road. Not far to go for the best chippie in town.

Love this place! We always travel from about 20 minutes away but it is absolutely worth it. When you order a large fish you definitely get a large fish. It has a crispy batter and tastes lovely. Chips are nice and flavourful aswell. Staff are very friendly also. In my opinion it is the best fish and chip shop in Essex!

Can't be beaten on quality or value for money. Best chippy I've come across by miles generous portions of beautiful fresh cooked fish and chips - even the oap meal deal which comes with chips is decent size nice thick fillet. No comparison to portion sizes locally some of which are tiny and more expensive . Lovely staff, spotlessly clean shop, parking is no problem - have to wait at busy times but well worth the wait

We get Fish and Chips from here a few times a month due to a lazy chef at home (me) We've lived here 18 months and haven't had a bad meal yet. Such lovely, polite and friendly staff. Good choice on the menu, and the portion sizes are HUGE! Beautiful light battered fresh fish and chunky delicious chips. You can't go wrong here, whatever you order!
