The menu has changed and was not as good as before. The fish & chips did not come with peas so the plate looked very bland. Fish tasted frozen

Whilst they took off bill, wihout asking , thank you......chef on duty advised he was not responsible as other chef prepared the slices, he just reheated, suggested both had responsibilities for quality control, cold expresso returned and served again still cold in hot cup ! curious ! We visited for Sunday dinner and actually booked a table. However we were one of only 3 tables with guests in whole restaurant We were presented with a fixed price menu, when asked about al a carte the waitress told us that the chef only does the fixed menu on sunday.(website was not clear on this) A poor selection of draught beers and the only cider on draught had blackcurrant in it! The food was pretty average to say the least uninspired like the staff. The score would have been lower had it not been for the carvery still pretty average but for an enthusiastic Sicilian chef who was so proud of his side dish cooked with garlic and olive oil it was delicious

Me and my boyfriend came here for some food, we have been before and enjoyed it but they must have changed the menu since we last been as we loved the chicken strips which werent there anymoe. When we entered the place was dead and the bar staff said they werent sure if they were taking walk ins as they were extremely busy, which we couldnt help but laugh at. We got a table and had a look at the menu, our drinks were sat at the bar for about 10 minutes with people walking past so i decided to go up and ask if i could take them myself which i ended up doing as coffee was getting cold. I ordered the pork starter which was just completely fatty- couldnt even eat one piece which was a bit of a waste. We both then had fish and chips for our mains, my gran who comes here regularly usually gets them to bread it instead of battered but they said they couldnt do it for me which i just dealt with, fish was very oily and had a pool of grease under. Chips were amazing though. Also seen a handful of people leave after being seated as staff were taking too long with orders, which we did debate doing ourselves as staff were just standing around talking instead of actually doing work. I felt the food was very very over priced and definetily wouldnt rush back here.

I visited your restaurant early Saturday evening. This was because my mother has consistently stated how good it is. Disappointment is an understatement for this visit. The restaurant was very quiet and we were seated easily. The waitress took our drinks order and this was served quickly. After a considerable wait I went to the bar and asked if someone could take our order and this was attended to. I did observe a number of staff who were extremely busy serving food however they were walking down a stair with this. I ordered rump of beef, haggis oatmeal, point-neuf potatoes etc. The meat was extremely dry on the outside, the oatmeal was so hard cooked that I had to scrape the haggis out of it. The pont-neuf potatoes were absolutely nothing like Parisian fried potatoes and in fact were identical to the chips served with my family’s burgers. The pea puree and pancetta was tasty. The other three members of the family ordered the burgers (one with haggis and peppercorn). There was no garlic mayo, as stated, on any of the brioche buns and there was no peppercorn (we assumed a sauce). On my mother’s recommendation we then ordered Swiss treacle meringue, with Chantilly cream, served with marinated oranges. This dish was quite unbelievable – two supermarket style meringue nests stuck together with firm cream of sorts and drizzled with treacle fresh from a can. Marinated oranges – I would say mandarins from a tin. It was absolutely awful. I did raise the issues with the waitress who said she was really sorry and appreciated my honesty however, that was it. She also acknowledged that the staff were run off their feet. Unbeknown to me my mother had also spoken to a gentleman at reception who asked if everything was all right. My mother highlighted her disappointment and the gentleman said “we have a new chef and he does things differently”. An establishment of this standard really should be able to produce good food freshly made on the premises. I come away feeling that no one actually cared that we were not satisfied with our food or the service we received.

Visited for a set menu Christmas lunch. The food was quite nice, no complaints but also nothing special. The service wasn't the best....the remnants of the Christmas crackers sat on the table for the duration of our 3 courses taking up much needed space. We had to ask for our mince pies and coffees and even then the coffee arrived 10 mins before the mince pie. Probably wouldn't go back for a Christmas meal. We had visited the month previously and our meal was really delicious so seems to be hit and miss. Maybe we just visited on a bad day.

The staff were very pleasant and helpful. My only niggle was the chairs were quite high for me as I am verticaly challenged. My feet couldn't touch the floor so it was a bit uncomfortable. There was a bar set up there for guests to have a drink. The food was really good - large scones with butter, jam & a big dish of thick cream, lovely sandwiches, tasty sausage rolls, good cake selection and plentiful tea & coffee. The meal we had afterwards was also very good. I thnak all staff at the Alona for making my mum's send off one she would have been proud of.

We were in a party of 3 for lunch and had a wait of about 15 minutes for a table although there appeared to be plenty of available tables. It was a small celebration lunch and we were looking forward to some slightly special food. The menu was very average with nothing really exiting but there was a reasonable choice. It was another 15 minutes before our order was taken and then another 20 minutes before the first course arrived. The food was good without being great or exceptional. As I was the only person having a starter, I was finished well within 5 minutes but it was another 20 minutes before the main course arrived. Again the food was good to average but most defiantly not great. My other 2 friends had a desert which was basically a cake with ice cream and it took 15 minutes to arrive at the table. I do not know if there were problems with staff but the other tables who were all having afternoon tea by the time we finished appeared to be served very much quicker than we were. We arrived at the restaurant for lunch just before 1 o'clock and left at 3:45 having had a 2 course lunch, not good service by any stretch of the imagination.

I have eaten here before and not been disappointed. This evening I was staying at the hotel and had no reticence about eating in the restaurant. I started with scallops, which were excellent and, unlike many restaurants, the quantity was very acceptable. Minor criticism would be that the black pudding was slightly overpowering, but hey! I followed this with the lamb, which was superb. Again it could have been slightly pinker, but it was beautifully moist and very tasty. Superbly complemented by dauphinoise (yum!) I would disagree with previous posts criticising the cost. Compared with some more "poncy" restaurants, I believe this is really good value, given the quality. In my humble opinion, this is a real hidden gem.

I booked the Alona after having been for lunch a few weeks ago. The restaurant is lovely and set in lovely settings beside the loch. I made the booking by telephone with an event team member for 14 people for my daughters 9th birthday. On arrival there was a mix up over provision of a set menu which was dealt with very well by the waitress. The restaurant manager though could have been more professional in her dealings with us however but I can't fault either the food or the service with a free drink given to compensate our inconvenience. The initial waitress and other staff were very attentive and it ended up a very good afternoon.

Had an afternoon tea in the glasshouse restaurant of the Alona hotel the other day, nice place. Nice view, overlooking Strathclyde Loch. The food was lovely, the sandwiches were just right. Good selection of cakes too. The girls serving it was lovely, very attentive. The lady in charge seems to be quite unpleasant though, she constantly had that bothered look on her face. She seemed to be giving the girls a hard time, which is a shame. She should leave the girls to do the great job they are doing. The mustard sauce which came with the dish was lovely however the haggis very bland and the bottom was hard as though it had been heated in a microwave! My main was mushroom and aubergine stroganoff! Nothing special, infact it was served with savoury rice which was under seasoned and the whole dish tasted watery! Decided to order some coffees and when we did order we had to wait about 10 - 15 minutes for these! Not sure if they were forgotten about! Anyway I ordered a macchiato but what I got was an americano which did not taste anything like a coffee! Sorry but I won't be rushing back!

I was staying at the nearby Holiday Inn Express, where the menu was not very inspiring. A quick search on trip advisor highlighted the Glasshouse Restaurant which is part of the Alona Hotel. This restaurant is a 5 min walk from the HI Express. I booked a table both nights I dined at the restaurant, however I on both occasions I visited (mid week) there were spare tables available.Service was good and the wines very reasonable, both in real terms and when compared to the HI Express nearby, which charged £2-£3 more per large glass of wine.On my first visit I had scallops to start, followed by fillet beef with egg noodles. The scallops were slightly over cooked for my taste and unfortunately dredged rather than hand dived, however for the approx. £7 cost, it represented good value. My main was tasty, although the beef was again slightly over cooked for my taste. On my second visit, the next day, I had the loin of deer with dauphinoise potato, which again was very nice, but again the deer was slightly better done than I would have liked. I was not asked at the time of ordering how I wanted the meat cooked, which on reflection was unusual. The wines and beers were good and well-priced and the service very good. Tap water was offered with no fuss.Overall, I’d recommend this restaurant; it has some good views of the rowing lake and offers good food at reasonable prices.

The table was nicely set out and the service prompt. We were all offered a complimentary slice of bread which is always nice. A few of us had starters and the crab cakes, mixed pakora and breaded brie all went down well. For mains we had ham, meatballs, risotto, curry and two fish and chips. One of the fish had to be sent back as the batter was soggy and far too greasy. I can't believe any self respecting chef would send it out that way actually but the complaint was dealt with promptly and without fuss. The sticky toffee pudding was a high point for dessert. There seemed to be a different member of waiting staff every time we were looking for something which gives the impression that it's a free for all but we didn't notice any lack of service at any point.I award a 4 based on my 3 courses but I know others weren't quite as impressed.

My husband had the steak which was supposed to come with hand cut chips, came with thin cut frozen ones, this was not a problem but again not what was stated ont he menu.Having said this we thoughourly enjoyed the meal and will be back, staff very attentive and lovely relaxed venue

Decided to drop off at the Alona for lunch and wish we hadn't bothered. Decided on 2 course lunch menu with 2 of the party having pakora and 2 having the haggis and black pudding. Pakora was ok but haggis bon bon as described was awful with a terrible dip to go with. The main courses were equally as bad with frozen chips and fish that was covered in grease. One of the party ordered a burger that came with a small salad on top and cheddar cheese. Not even edible but when asked for relish to go with it to add some taste they could not oblige only mayonnaise. The burger went back hardly touched which the waitress noticed but no feedback was given even though we told them it was terrible. Nice pleasant staff but very substandard food. The bill for 4 £70 for lunch with 3 soft drinks and a pint. Unfortunately first and last visit.

We were not staying in the hotel but were staying a short distance away at the Strathclyde Caravan Club site in our new 2014 Challenger caravan. We decided to walk down to have a meal in the restaurant. My daughter and I ordered the prawn tempura starter which came with an amazing dipping sauce while my wife enjoyed a soup of the day, which she describes as gorgeous. For main course my daughter and I ordered the venison dish which was outstanding in both presentation and flavour. The venison was cooked to the perfect point. My daughter thought the presentation was so good she even took photos with her iphone. My wife had the strips of fillet steak in a soy and ginger sauce with noodles which she thought was outstanding. They both had a dessert while I did not so I can only report their comments as refreshing, delicious and amazing. I have eaten in five star restaurants all around the world during my business travel days before retirement, so I think I am a reasonable judge of food.

Attended a friends birthday doo for the set meal. First disappointment was that two items on the set menu were not available and was only 6pm. Anyway ordered up and the service was quick and the meal of good quality. The only real negative of the main course was the lack of gravy to go with the roast beef ( I know I'm being picky). The waitresses were very attentive making sure we had drinks and jugs of water. The surrounding are very nice but a small word of warning: if you go on a cold night as we did, wrap up well the restaurant was very cold. The waitress did try her best by supplying a small fan heater, but we could have done with three or four of them. A good night out but just needs a wee bit of attention to detail to make it good.

myself and two friends had a lovely meal here a couple of weeks ago,the wine was also very good..reasonable prices as well..place is very cosy as well, and staff very nice my only complaint was i asked for a soda water and had to wait a long time before it came, asked the waitress again as i thought she forgot but she said she told the bar staff and was still waiting on them to give it to her so fault with them..would have given five stars only for this...

Myself, along with my family of 5 for a family get together, including one toddler aged 3 went for a meal after checking out different places to eat for our evening meal when visiting M and Ds. Were made to feel very welcome, pleasant and attentive staff and felt there was a great ambiance. The food I felt arrived quickly, a good selection for both adults, and delighted to see a child friendly childrens menu too. The food was well cooked, and we were all pleased. Slight criticism would be that my main meal portion was slightly on the smaller side but what it lacked in size was made up in flavour. There was a live band playing a selection of music in the background and it suited the evening perfectly, not too loud to mean you couldnt intimately chat without your party, but in the background to add to the evening. My daughter asked if she could dance, to which she went up closer to the singer, when he saw her he began singing directly to her and when he was playing instruments for an instrumental he handed her a pair of sticks to join in, she was absolutely delighted and to be honest it just topped off the wonderful meal perfectly. When he noticed we were leaving he came over to say good bye to her and thanked her for joining in. The prices were a surprise to me personally, excellent value, would have easily expected to pay double that locally to myself. Would definitely visit again, not only if i was in the area, but to purposely too.

We were there recently with friends and we had small children. We had spent all day at the theme park next door and they were all therefore exhausted but loud and a bit unruly. We asked for a "quick in and out" experience so we could all head to bed after a long day. Because our children were a bit loud, we felt out of place, and just wanted to eat and go....however the food took what seemed like forever....to the point that we had to ask if it was actually on its way. After 40 minutes of waiting and watching others who were seated way before us, get their food, ours finally arrived. Everyone's food looked quite good. I ordered the beef and mushrooms over pasta with a honey soy sauce - which sounded delectable, and was confirmed by our server. When it finally arrived, (let me add i was ravenous by the time it came) it was barely edible. The pasta was exactly like it had come from the "Cup of Noodles" from the supermarket and the honey soy sauce had been poured out with such a heavy hand, that i debated whether or not i could actually ingest it without needing a box of water pills afterward. The soy sauce was like a pool with noodles swimming in it...the beef was great quality and good, but again...completely submerged in soy sauce. I am certain that this plate was erroneously "sent out" because a short while later I saw another plate that looked similar to what mine SHOULD have looked like and i asked the patrons, and they confirmed that they had ordered the same thing. Theirs looked SO good and mine was SO bad but i had been SO hungry that I ate it anyway. Surely my plate must have been a mistake but since it was actually "delivered" I have to rate it based on what i received - not what someone else received. The kitchen should make absolutely certain that what "goes out" is seen by the chef, because this was not a good meal whatsoever, and anyone who looked at it, could have determined that. That coupled with the wait time was not enjoyable.

If you are looking for an early dinner during the week, then the high tea menu here is very good value. We had soup, a main course, a scone with cream and jam and tea or coffee for £11.95. We couldn't fault any of the food and although it was quiet, it still has a nice atmosphere. Would highly recommend, although this is only available between 3 and 6pm.

I had Caesar salad as a starter. A small amount of shredded lettuce and a lot of chicken/bacon. Frankly, I could have had a much better salad from M&S or Waitrose services. The sweet was OK except for the nut brittle which stuck my teeth together. My partners main course had what appeared to be frozen chips, along with some cod coated in a horrible looking crumb. It looked very dry and unappetising. He said that his cheesecake was nice. The service was good. Overall, I would not eat here again for an evening meal unless I was desparate.

From booking the table, to ordering and being served lunch, the staff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was very good and the choice from the set lunch menu was varied. Our table for 8 was well looked after and all enjoyed their meal in pleasant surroundings. Mum's baaaa-nifi pie was banoffee to the rest of us !

We dropped into the restaurant after a visit to M&D's amusement park which is next door. We went for the two course Sunday lunch which was excellent, really tasty and good value. I'd definitely recommend eating here if you're visiting M&D's/Strathclyde Park and are in need of a bite to eat.

Three of us had Sunday lunch here. It was a set menu with four or five choices for each course. At fifteen pounds each for three courses, I felt it was good value. A two course meal cost slightly less so there was no need to force down dessert to get your money's worth. The food was very tasty and timely served. Service was good. A jug of water was provided without even having to ask and, with water glasses already on the table, this is probably a matter of course. The chocolate fudge cake was excellent nice and moist and oozing chocolate sauce-unlike some of the rather dry versions I have had in the past. The Alona Hotel is a 4 star hotel in Strathclyde Park overlooking the Lake, and it's restaurant is a giant conservatory with windows looking onto the park and the lake. So, nice surroundings, especially for sun lovers. There is a smaller area used for those just dropping in for a coffee or a drink.

We were at Strathclyde Park myself husband elderly mother my daughter and 9 month old grandson. We decided to go for afternoon tea and went to the AlonA. It was wonderful if every way. The selection of food with the afternoon tea/coffee package was great lovely sandwiches beef & horseradish, tuna cucumber, cheese, ham & tomatoe good amount per person plus scones, cream, jam, fresh butter, strawberries clotted cream, carrot cake biscuits and a good sized coffee pot per person. Wonderful jug of iced water etc. Best afternoon tea I've had. The staff were great and provided good safe highchair for the baby and the toilet facilities were excellent for mum to reach as they were on same level and had disabled facilities and also excellent baby changing etc for Noah. I had a look at the leaflets and saw good competitive delegate rates for meetings etc and offers for mothers day, weddings, funerals etc. The Dinner menu looked good too. A really nice atmosphere in the AlonA and I would certainly visit again.

Visited The Alona for a birthday afternoon tea with three friends. Served by a lovely young (foreign) lady. Seated immediately and order taken within a few minutes of arriving. Food arrived around 10 minutes later. We had lovely freshly made sandwiches. Tuna mayo, roast beef and mustard, gammon salad and cheese and pickle. Scones were hot and served with jam and cream. Lovely cakes one of which was a thin shortbread topped with a raspberry mousse and fresh raspberry - delicious! Choice of tea or coffee was available. £7.99 per person. Staff were very attentive. Would highly recommend. Excellent value for money.

I have just had afternoon tea at this hotel!!!!!!!!!!! Never again. We waited ten minutes to be seated despite only having another few customers. We had to ask twice for a glass of wine, which was poured by the most angry waitress I have ever seen, she constantly barked at her colleague who was clearly new. When the afternoon tea arrived we were given a coleslaw sandwich, very unusual. We had to ask for jam for the scones and I didn't want to ask for a spoon for the cream as moody waitress was constantly glowering at me. I should have complained to the manager , but when he came from the kitchen with a carrot baton in hand, I thought, maybe not, then some diners food was plated up and low and behold carrot baton was served!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The moody waitress made comments about leaving her chat to serve customers!!!! Thats what you get paid for . I have since contacted the hotel and waiting for a response.

Booked here for family dinner to celebrate anniversary, as we held our 25th anniversary party at the hotel last year. We also stayed overnight in hotel and had breakfast next day.We were all looking forward to our meal as we loved the ambience of the hotel last year. The starters were very average and presentation a lot to be desired. Two of us had beef strips with noodles which were lovely, but others had the duck with chorizo and spring onion mash and felt the duck was a bit over cooked, again presentation was poor. Only two of us had desserts, mine was best part of meal all night, poached pear with chocolate profiteroles(best I've tasted). When you look at items and prices on menu you are anticipating something amazing, but to be honest we would have got better in Glasgow city centre and for much cheaper. It is a shame as the hotel is lovely.

Lovely clean restaurant, kitchen visible which is good, we had the "high tea" 3 courses reasonable choice, we settled for soup (chicken & leek) followed by steak & ale pie served with boiled potatoes, carrots, peas & small but sufficient piece of pastry, finished with a gorgeous scone with clotted cream & jam, tea/coffee all for £11.95each. The first waitress was a bit miserable in that she didn't smile, but Natalie took over & was much more pleasant & new how to smile which added to our relaxed pleasurable meal, so thanks for that Natalie.

What a lovely place to visit. A very extensive lunch time menu in a very nice setting. The prices are so reasonable for what you get. The afternoon tea my wife had was very impressive at only £7.99 and she had 4 sandwiches a pot of tea scone with jam and fresh cream and a nice selection of cakes. I had a fillet steak sandwich with onions chips and side salad. Delicious!!!!!!!!!!! The staff are really good and so efficient. Really good for Strathclyde Park and it seems to attract a lot of return visitors.

Booked for lunch (not necessary it was virtually empty), table for four. Young waitress came, gave menus asked if we wanted drinks. Gave order for three soft drinks, male appeared , not quickly, with two. Told next girl who appeared, not quickly, still had to wait on missing drink. Waited ages for order to be taken. After another lengthy wait, girl appeared to ask if penne pasta was ok instead of linguine. I half imagined someone having to run to Tesco ! Food arrived.Pretty average.I requested parmesan to top my pasta: never saw it. My citrus tart tasted stale rather than tart.Ordered coffees.AFTER AN HOUR!!Still hadn t appeared....took another 15 mins before we saw them after complaing. It was just as well we were there for a gossip.I stress that the dining area was virtually empty, there were at least three waitresses taking turns to lean against the bar chatting to two male staff alternating at said bar.The whole experience was bizarre. Maybe they stated amnesia as a required quality on the job description.Needless to say we left a very small tip. We should have refused to pay the full amount.

Ate here with family and were really impressed. Restaurant was beautiful and view from window stunning. Service was excellent. Food was what impressed us most. Each course was beautifully presented and tasted amazing, fresh as could be and also very unique. The whole experience in my opinion I would have expected in a five star extremely expensive restaurant, however the price of the set menu which we had was no more than 3 courses at any basic pub. I really hope they keep a hold of the chef who manages such impressive food at great prices.

I arrived at the coffee place, haven't been there before. When we walked in the door, a parade of parents were leaving with buggies etc, as I was coming in carrying my 11 month old and my 4 year old walked ahead - as they do - I called to him as he charged ahead and said 'we have to go order lunch, and pay first' he followed me into the cafe where I ordered his kids lunchbox meal, and a coffee and cake for myself (which came to £13.95, I assumed that included the sandpit - which is £4) I advised, I was going to the sandpit but i was a little early, the staff replied it was open as they'd just been down and cleaned after the last session so if I went down, they'd bring my order down. Wasn't even down there 5 minutes, and a very rude girl came yelling at the door, (I was standing in the sandpit, there was 2 other families In as well may I add) 'you've not paid to be in here!' I was absolutely mortified! I replied, I had paid, as just returned from the cafe. She charged away and came back again 5 mins later, 'you've not paid so you'll need to come and pay it!'. Again, she shouted from the door instead of coming over to me. I was mortified! I tried getting my 4 year old to come, and my baby was in the high chair. I lovely woman offered to keep an eye for a couple minutes whilst I ran up. Something I never do, but my anxiety was so bad and I could have died was embarrassment so i rushed away! So basically, you have to pay for the sandpit on the right-hand side when you enter, there is a sign, which I missed when coming in because it was so busy at the door. A misunderstanding! When I arrived to pay at the desk, (i was flapping having had left my kids with strangers, and obv course still mortified by the lack of manners and discretion from this girl), I said I'm here to pay for my child in the sandpit, and the same girl said 'eh is it not 2 children? I replied, 'Well yes it was but it stated online under 1 are free' as I had already asked when I booked. Again, lack of manners and a very bad tone. 👎 after paying for them, I went back to the sandpit and when I went to eat my pavlova, i was filled with deeper disappointment! It was awful 😖 strawberries were not fresh, were soggy, and had dirt on them, which completely put me off eating it (clearly they werent washed) and my coffee had gone cold. I obv didn't bother leaving to go back and Complain after the reception I'd already had so I left it. A very Overpriced unpleasant experience for an hour and a half. I will not be back! And it put me right off booking their pumpkin event which I was going to do that day after seeing it online.
