The George Townhouse in Stratford-on-Avon

We stayed atThe George Townhouse with family for a wedding and they couldn't have been more accommodating. We were able to check in early, drop our bags and change for the wedding. The room was very comfortable and the breakfast was one of the best we've had.

Loved this place. Booked on a whim, needing 2 days near Stratford. Reception was welcoming and Poppy and the others were so helpful and good fun. Like other reviewers we couldn't find anything to fault..bedrooms, service ,food and drink were all excellent. My friend was really complimentary about my random choice for our 2 night stay😅 Very reasonable rates and extremely friendly team, who obviously all get on really well with each other. 20 mns from Stratford, Shipston is a great little town. I'd thoroughly recommend a stay here in this hotel

Great venue. Has really lifted the Town and put it firmly on The Cotswold map. Their Sunday Roasts are excellent.

We had a family trip (6 rooms), staying for 2 nights at The George Townhouse at the beginning of March 2024. Hotel is approximately 20 minutes to Stratford upon Avon. All the rooms were decorated nicely, clean and the most comfy beds ever. Bathrooms were clean. Shower was great with nice toiletries and proper sized towels. Breakfast in the hotel was really tasty – small buffet selection and hot food to order. Dinner similarly was delicious and generous portions. Good selection of drinks. Service was really friendly from all team members but a special shout-out must go to Jordan Williams. Nothing was too much trouble, he made sure that we all had everything we wanted and made everyone feel really welcome. The only thing that would have made our stay even better would be to have some biscuits in the room to go with the tea and coffee. I definitely recommend this hotel, both for eating at and for staying and hope we get to go back one day.

We stayed two nights so had two breakfasts and both were lovely, really well presented, nice and fresh and hot, made to order.

The staff were friendly and personable, from the restaurant to the bar. Special shoutout to the Arsenal fan with the ponytail. The food was exceptional. When paying the bill, the barman was surprised that we split it to the penny. Must be a southern thing!

Good location, average rooms, great food and comfy bed. Don't rely on the 12am bar close time though as they will close at 11pm and claim it's a technical issue?!

We had another lovely nights stay the The George Townhouse. The rooms are clean, beautiful and well equipped, staff are brilliant and nothing feels like too much trouble, and diner and breakfast tasted fantastic. Can’t wait to stay again

Fantastic 1 night stay at the George. Room was excellent, clean, really comfortable bed and lovely bathroom. Nice touches with the toiletries and coffee maker. All the staff we met were friendly and responsive - it felt like walking into your local pub straight away. Our evening meal was also excellent with a good range of choices. Couldn’t fault breakfast either with a wide hot food selection and lovely pastries! All in all we would thoroughly recommend and are looking forward to returning

Thank you to The George Townhouse for an amazing Christmas lunch yesterday. Everything was perfect. Wonderful food (including Vegan for me) and great service and atmosphere. It made our Christmas Day very special indeed.

Went to the George for a drink or two, the pub is lovely, really clean and cosy and the staff are all friendly and helpful, we were served by Jordan who could no do enough for us.

The bar service in this place just goes from bad to worse - stood at the bar for almost 10 minutes whilst 2 bar staff tried to work out how to make a cocktail, completely oblivious to the fact that people were waiting. No acknowledgement or apology when they eventually came to serve the waiting queue …. And no obvious management as usual.

This is a lovely place to eat. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. I loved the braised beef, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. I was concerned that the gravy might be too sweet but it was delicious. The broccoli was also cooked to perfection. For breakfast, we enjoyed eggs benedict with smoked salmon and buttermilk pancakes which were perfectly cooked. The service was excellent. Prices were reasonable. We stayed in the hotel and that was also a great experience.

Not impressed. Booked for a lunch. Hoping to have a quick meal. Not what we achieved. Service was what can only be described as slow. Meal was ok if a bit lukewarm. Usually like our meals nice and hot. Food was tasty, could not fault that.

We have just returned from an excellent 2 night stay at the Townhouse. We have 3 children and they were all well catered for - a put you up bed for extra child and excellent kids menu at the restaurant and kids goody bags to keep them entertained. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean, very well equipped, lovely toiletries, warm, cosy and sensitive to the beautiful old building. We were on the road side but it was not noisy. The town itself if charming with lots of interesting shops and a lovely deli. Breakfast was delicious with a large range of options and the 2 dinners we had were both top quality with a good range of choices and quick service. We were sad to leave and would not hesitate to return. A great place! Thank you.

Lovely pub with very nice accommodation. My husband and I had a lovely meal in the restaurant and were very impressed with the food and choice of drinks. The service was second to none as well. We would highly recommend this pub for a meal and a place to stay 😃

We hosted a private lunch celebration at the George Townhouse and booked rooms for our guests to stay the night that evening. The event was a great success, and I would thoroughly recommend The George for events and accommodation. All my advance dealings with the assistant (?) manageress Chiara were extremely pleasant and everything was as we had hoped on the day. The staff were friendly, helpful and flexible and the lunch was tasty, good value and exactly what we requested. The accommodation was amazing and our guests commented on how lovely the rooms were and what a treat it was to stay there. All in all a fabulous option, we were very happy. Have to say, I was properly made up at the food here. The burgers were done to perfection, as was the stake, and I think I may have had a spiritual moment with the sticky toffee pudding! Added to that the staff were attentive, funny, and very pleasant and the range of beers was excellent. A real pleasure and I will certainly be coming back.

Ten of us had a fantastic stay over the weekend. The team were so welcoming and helpful, especially Chiara I believe her name was. They were so flexible and accommodating to our changing needs. The rooms were lovely, the beds were comfortable and the shower was excellent. On the Friday night fouteen if us had dinner in the side room which was also lovely.

Let me start by saying that I did a review shortly after my visit but for some reason it was not received by tripadvisor. I booked for 22 guests for a Sunday lunch for my birthday. This was done weeks in advance as was the guests requirements for the meal. I was originally shown the private dining room and was told this would be set up in advance. However when we arrived the private room was not set up in any shape or form. The table was not set with anything, no cutlery, glasses, just nothing. When I asked what was happening I was told they were short of staff. Long story cut short, eventually the table was set but I had to ask for glasses for both water and the wine I had ordered also salt,pepper and serving spoons were absent. Apart from a young lad spilling a coke over my granddaughters shoulder the food and drink was very good, (as it should have been as I spent over £900 for the event) I did complain at the time to the young lad when I paid but to no avail. My guests had traveled many miles to join me for my birthday and I was more than annoyed with the outcome. whilst I admit the food was very good that was the only plus side I am a local resident to the George and have mentioned this to a number of friends, beware if you book for a large number of guests at this premises

Lovely rooms and an excellent vegetarian breakfast. The staff were very helpful and accommodating to us.

Our expectations were exceeded and to be honest, blown away by the wonderful staff, professionalism and gorgeous meal. Well done to this restaurant for dishing up a truly excellent experience in every respect. We are on holiday and we’ll be back this week.

This must be some sort of a joke, I honestly couldn’t believe it! I am disabled and was walking with my walking frame and asked to use the disabled toilet, only to discover that there were two steps to get down to get to it! When I mentioned it to the guy in charge, he asked if I wanted him to put a ramp down for me. I then had to wait who knows how long while he fiddled with a complicated ramp. Disabled people really shouldn’t have to wait to go to the toilet. He said if there was a group booking they put the ramp down. He never apologised to me. It would have been so easy to put a permanent ramp down to enable access to the toilet. You really couldn’t have made it up

Lovely 2 night stay in the inn. Great, if small, room. no level floors or straight walls in a place full of character. Good value.Great bar with some fab Brakspeare ales - yummy.One quibble - breakfast at £10 a little expensive but even more so when charged that for the cont option.

This is one of the best pubs I have been in for a long time (even before COVID!). Food was fantastic and a good wine and drinks list. They also made the best vodka martini and old fashioned I've had for a while. The service was faultless and they even arranged a table for use to watch the England game after our meal. Its is a shame that this is not my local pub as I would never leave!.

We ate at The George and AWFUL moules mariniere - - There was no shallot at all. This is essential to the taste and was completely missed out.- There was no white wine or garlic at all.- The mussels were dry and shrivelled, and most importantly AT LEAST HALF THE SHELLS WERE SMASHED making it almost impossible to eat without crunching on shell fragments.- And lastly there was no finger dip, so we had to go to the toilets specifically to wash our hands after.All in all the dish was an utter disaster, we love mussels but this was inedible, tasteless, crunchy and messy. There is no way on earth we would have accepted it had we not been entertaining guests. If the chef continues to serve such plates he’s in the wrong job. We have eaten five times at The George in the last year and the last time the linguine was served cold and had to be replaced so given what happened recently we aren’t sure if we would want to risk it again.I have emailed the restaurant and filled in the online complaint form - 2 weeks ago - and no response at all.

Absolutely phenomenal. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Food - amazing. Service - amazing. Atmosphere- amazing. We are coming back tomorrow for 2 for £10 cocktails (Thursdays)

Mains fairly on the expensive side and drinks topped bill up to be quite expensive, but food, service and drinks were all good. Garlic bread was superbly fluffy!

Perfect for a Saturday lunch. Excellent friendly staff, Matt and the team did a great job of looking after us, creating a friendly atmosphere whilst keeping the COVID guidelines. Will be definitely coming back, especially for the 2 cocktails for a tenner on Thursdays!

Recently had dinner at the George. Our dinner ranged from good to disappointing.Our starters were Tomato and Pepper Houmous which was really tasty and served with delicious Lebanese style flatbreads. The Pork Crackling had a great texture but was completely tasteless. The Apple chutney nearly saved it.Main courses were Prawn and Chorizo Linguine and a Duo of Mount Grace Lamb.The Linguine was very disappointing - pasta swimming in oil, four measly little prawns and chewy cubes of chorizo. Cooking Chorizo would have been a much better addition and some salt and pepper ?The Braised Lamb Shepperd's Pie was presented nicely but again lacked flavour. The Lamb Rump was cooked nicely and so were the Garden Vegetables.Dessert of Pear and Frangipane Slice with Poached Pears took an age to come (think they forgot ?). The two slices of Poached Pear were obviously cooked at different times, one was soft and one was hard and again lacked flavour.The service was friendly but I would suggest if you ask a guest how their food is and the answer is negative just saying sorry and walking away just shows the question was pointless in the first place.There is a lot to commend about this restaurant, the venue, the vibe, interesting wine list and promising menu. My recommendation to the George is to get your Kitchen brigade to taste their food before sending and a bit more supervision in the restaurant.

The George Townhouse has a lovely local feel to it whilst still managing to offer that little bit extra compared to the other pubs in town. The staff are friendly, and there are plenty of Gluten Free food and drink options.

One of the better places for Sunday lunch. Good menu, good selection of fair priced wines. Staff very professional, efficient, and friendly. Top marks to Kerry who gave us top class service with a friendly approach. Will return, but only one question. Why have they dropped from the menu, the very popular Welsh Rarebit. Please reinstate this super dish.

We stayed here for a pre-baby romantic getaway just before Christmas.The place was very warm and welcoming and staff were friendly.We were shown to our beautiful room which was large, beautifully decorated and well equipped. We decided to eat dinner in the restaurant and we were not disappointed. The food was incredible and the staff couldn’t do enough for us.Drinks were recommended with our meal and the staff were patient when we were making our selections! The breakfast the next morning was equally delicious.Very impressed with the place overall and would love to stay and eat again!!

We had family Christmas meal out here. A lovely environment. All foods we ordered came out on a good pace without any delay in-between despite two functions going on. Portion of all foods are very very very generous and delicious. Some of us had free-from-food (gluten, dairy, shell fish and nuts) and vegan as well which were pretty good. Plenty of parking places around the area with short walk to the pub. A private room we hired was a good size for 10 adults, but more than that would be a bit small.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the George Townhouse. Staff were very efficient and welcoming even though it was a really busy night - Victorian Christmas and lights switch on! Breakfast was great value for money and the rooms were comfortable and cosy.

My husband booked this place for a surprise night away and it was wonderful. The room was gorgeous, the food very good and the staff could not have been any more friendly or helpful. I didn’t want to leave and we will definitely be back.

Three of us called in for breakfast and were happily welcomed in alongside our dog. Good to see so many people around eating and having coffee, yet there are several separate areas/rooms which made our breakfast nice and quiet.

This is exactly what you would expect from the outside. A large popular pub. Reasonable wine list and good beer choices.

Our room was at the front of the hotel facing the main road but it is such a quiet place, there wasn't a great deal of road noise. The bed and pillows were super comfortable and the shower was large with overhead waterfall or lower down individual shower head (to avoid getting your hair wet). All looked recently refurbished to a high standard.

Were in the area and looking for a place to eat on Saturday. Nice atmosphere, great food and service.

My partner & I were very much looking forward to staying here, as all the photos/reviews online made the place look lovely. Our room was cosy, with everything we needed and a very comfortable bed! The Nespresso coffee machine and nice toiletries were good extra touches. The only downside to our room was the constant buzzing from what I think were air conditioning units or extractor units from the kitchen. This wasn’t a major issue though, as after a while you didn’t notice it. Other than that, the room was lovely and we both got a great nights sleep. The bathroom was also really nice, with a really powerful shower.

We stopped for lunch on the way to Chipping Camden. Quite busy on a midweek lunchtime which is a good sign. The food was good, although there seems to be an over-use of bread, presumably to make the portions look bigger. My big issue is the tipping policy.

Took my 90 year old father, who is in a wheelchair, for breakfast here. We were greeted by Claire who was so welcoming. She immediately suggested a nice quiet area for Dad and happily fetched ramps for Dad's wheelchair so he could get into the room. Excellent customer service from Claire. All staff were great, friendly and helpful but Claire made us feel very valued as customers. The food was excellent, well done to the chefs. Bacon was crispy and perfect for my husband. Dad's scrambled egg look creamy and plentiful. He ate the lot and said how nice it was. I had the banana bread with blueberries and creme fraiche.... Delicious and took me back to many yummy lighter brekkies I've eaten in Oz. Flat whites and cappuccinos definitely the best in Shipston. Well done all!
