Wishing to thank me for helping her at her recent art exhibition my wife treated me to a lunch at our favourite pub. The welcome was as warm as always with a gathering of locals enjoying the bar. Here I was soon in my element enjoying a chat with a local farmer and learning about his supplying a major supermarket with their lamb. We find the local people of the Brendon Hills are very friendly and accepting. Before we had ordered our meal Dave the chef, in testing his new pate, offered them as ‘amuse bouche’ to everyone in the bar. An excellent way to judge its acceptance. Our starters were smoked local trout on a cream cheesed rosti and a whitebait beautifully presented. My wife enjoyed the Bengal curry which she claimed was the best so far whilst I plumbed for the roast duck, tender stem broccoli, one roast potato and red cabbage in a port jus so exquisite that I would have been happy to ‘drown’ in it! We finished with a white chocolate lime cheesecake and for me a childhood reminiscence, a grand jam roly-poly on a rich custard. It’s a pity the school cooks never had the skills that went into making this one! Finally our usual espressos which came with the sad news that Tash, who had served us every weekday that we’d had lunch here, was on her last day at the George. A tinge of sadness for us and all the pub’s regulars. She will be missed by all. We will however look forward to our next visit in the spring.

Yet again we needed to celebrate having resolved a long standing technical problem. The pub in Brompton Regis came up in discussion the evening before when our neighbour was around for a glass of wine. He said that before coming to our village he’d looked at houses in Brompton Regis. He left and we booked a table. Friday was a damp day but we were not deterred as we drove up into the Brendon Hills, usually distant views greet one but this day the clouds were dominant. However as we descended from Roborough Gate towards Wimbleball Lake we could turn off the wipers. By the time we crossed the bridge at the top of the lake a shaft of sun broke through and sparkled across the surface of the water whilst light wisps of mist kissed the shore line. Rounding the churchyard wall always raises our expectations for there is the George Inn. The bar door was hardly open before Tash, a beaming smile, greeted us with a price board for ‘COFFEE’. I said in my previous review that I wouldn’t mention coffee at the George again, sorry, but I must. The coffee machine had arrived the day before. Well done Tripadvisor & the George! We had a wonderful starter of Baba Ganoush, new to the menu that day. It was exceptionally good with delicate flavour. Following on was chicken breast and pasta with tomato sauce, again great flavour though my wife found it a little too greasy. My Bengal curry was fantastic and a most generous serving. Our ‘Desert,’sic, was Chocolate Ganache with pistachio ice cream under crunched nuts. I had the steamed maple syrup pudding set in a delicious whisky sauce, a very delicate and light texture, just right to finish on after the curry! Of course we had our long awaited espressos from the new device, a delicious finale to our meal. Earlier in walkers had dropped in wanting a coffee. Now all on Exmoor should be heading to the George for their ‘hit’.

This is a fantastic country pub. Lovely, quiet, rural location, yet central to the small village. And, there is a small playground just outside the beer garden for kids to play in whilst waiting for food. Staff couldn't have been more accommodating for our early evening meal with young kids. The food was all excellent; well presented, tasty, decent portions and not overpriced. Would definitely revisit; it's just a shame we're not local. Would recommend a visit.

We stayed here for one night and had a lovely time. We were welcomed like family and everyone was very friendly. We spent a lot of time just sitting about in the pub and it was lovely and cosy with the log fire going. The pub is dog-friendly, which was excellent. There is a skittle alley which they didn't mind us playing in. The food was excellent and there are plenty of good walks nearby. The only downside is that the room we stayed in was very cold, they didn't seem to have any heating upstairs, and the floors were quite creaky because its an old pub, so you heard when other guests were moving about.

We always leave feeling that we have had a very pleasant evening and have been very well looked after, A warm welcome and attentive service wins our loyalty. The food is good, traditional pub fare, usually served piping hot, and they can offer gluten free choices. The bar/restaurant has a lovely, cosy, traditional country pub atmosphere. Tables are well placed and reasonably well spaced out, and the room is full of character with old beams, and some lovely sporting prints and photographs on the walls. We have 2 equal favourites for the Dulverton/Exmoor area and this is one of them. Dog friendly. Well worth the pretty drive out to the village of Brompton Regis.
