The Wheelhouse Restaurant in West Somerset

We have always visited this restaurant over the last 20+ years since my wife’s mother moved to Minehead. This was the first time we felt like we were intruding and unwanted as a customer. We arrived for a 12:00 booking and immediately had the owner remind us that the table had to be free by 13:30. We had a reasonable meal although there’s not much you can get wrong with scampi and chips! But then to have the owner stand next to our table and say to other diners who had just arrived some 10 mins early for their table, ‘I have told them we need the table!’ was both rude and uncalled for. It is such a shame, a place that we had such fond memories of, and thought we were valued customers, but no longer unfortunately.

Had Sunday roast here today. Staff were lovely and accommodating. Sticky toffee pudding was absolutely beautiful, would have had seconds if I wasn't so full. Will definitely be returning when I'm next visiting minehead. 100% recommend

Walking through Minehead this afternoon and came across this gem of a restaurant by accident. All I can say is wow! Amazing food. We had the roast beef, succulent beef, gorgeous roast potatoes and parsnips, accompanied by a delicious selection of vegetables. The raspberry pavlova, amaretto crème brûlée and lemon tart very scrumptious! The owners are so welcoming and accommodating. A lucky find, would 100% recommend!

The Wheelhouse was a great find during our stay in Minehead and we ate there 3 nights running. A homely atmosphere with friendly staff and efficient service. All the food was excellent and prepared with care, just the right scope of menu, nothing too fancy and very good value. No hesitation in recommending it highly.

Wonderful meal had mushroom starter and both had burger really enjoyed would highly recommend.

The main complaint we had were the faux mashed potatoes. What supposedly upscale restaurant serves dehydrated mashed potatoes? Because of that we probably won't be going back because we're potato lovers.

Have been in here twice while we have been away. 1st day we had steak and kidney pie and lasagne which we both enjoyed. Tonight we had Gammon, egg and chips and Home cooked ham egg and chips which also was very nice. Service and staff was very good on both nights. Good atmosphere and reasonably priced

Lovely restaurant with a good choice of dishes. The staff were professional but also pleasant and friendly. We went there for dinner on our first night in Minehead. I had lasagne with salad and garlic bread and my husband had gammon, egg and chips - both were excellent. In fact so good we decided to go again the next evening. This time, I had scampi and chips but my husband had the gammon again as it was so good the previous evening. Unfortunately, we didn't have room for desserts! Really good food at very reasonable prices. Would definitely eat here again, and would highly recommend it!

The hostess managed to provide two covers before their bookings. The food was cooked to perfection, the scampi was the best I've had in a while, and the 10oz gammon steak was oozing flavour. Bread and butter pudding was heavenly and the apple and blackberry crumble was scrumptious. Highly recommended restaurant! Parking is on street in the surrounding area and can be challenging around teatime.

Omg this was the best steak and kidney pie I have ever had. Amazing food . You can taste the good homemade quality and the food cooked to perfection. Best meal out I have had in ages .

Absolutely delicious food, the owners very welcoming all homemade food, I have to say the bread and butter pudding was the best.

So luck to able to get a seat in this lovely restaurant as it homemade food with lovely staff . Food was lovely with good choice of vegetables. So full up I didn't have room for a dessert. I would highly suggest you make a reservation for this restaurant .

Not recommended for families with young kids As a parent to a young child, I felt this was the most unwelcoming establishment for kids. One member of staff was explicitly rude and we spent the meal being watched by the waiting staff. All staff members were unfriendly and I would not return after this experience. It was such a shame as the food was really good but the experience left a sour taste.

We were booked for 1815 see reviews on line id just like to say every review was true 10-10 we had pate starter great prawns great mains chicken salmon steak and kidney pie i can truly say I’ve never had so much meat in a pie,,well done to you all I can’t wait to come back,,,,,

It’s was ok but pretty average in terms of quality of the cooking (had the battered cod which was small and lasagna which came with a good amount of side salad and garlic bread). The decor is old fashioned with carpet on floor. The service was good.

Food was ok nothing special Thought having seafood in Mevagissey can’t go wrong but it was very lacking only the tiniest ring of squid and one and all tiny mussels abd about 4 tiny prawns very disappointed Burger had much better elsewhere Disappointing

My husband and I love eating in the Wheelhouse. Having visited this restaurant many times, I can guarantee to any newbies that their cooked meals come hot, very well presented and full of flavour. We will return soon.

Excellent. Lovely food. Wonderful friendly service. So pleased we found this restaurant while holidying in Minehead in May. Great understanding of the fact one of our family had allergies with possible severe reaction. So ate there 3 evenings in a row. Can't fault the experience at all.

Excellent food reasonably priced

A great find, varied well priced menu, comfortable seating and excellent service, food is very good and is served promptly, wide selection of drinks and puddings. Home made steak and kidney pie was the best I have tasted, booked in for one evening meal and went back the following evening again. Highly recommended.

What a fabulous meal we had here, we cannot recommend it more highly. We were made to feel very welcome. The food was delicious, the service excellent. The place exudes old fashioned charm and standards. I understand all the food is home-cooked, so they keep gluten out of all the recipes they can. As a coeliac I was able to choose most items from the menu - a rare treat to be able to have so much choice and to be able to eat with my family. I had three courses (can't remember the last time that happened). Mushrooms in Garlic with Stilton, Vegetarian Chilli and Raspberry and Vanilla Cheesecake. In one way I wished we lived in Minehead so I could visit more often, but on the other hand, I think it is probably just as well we don't, as I can't imagine how much weight I would put on!

What a find! Would love a restaurant just like this at home. It was a wet Saturday night just after Easter and we wanted somewhere lovely to eat for my birthday so we tried here. We could not have chosen anywhere better. Friendly owners and fantastic home-cooked, wholesome, delicious, glorious food (have I said how good it was?!). Excellent service, quick and friendly. We don't usually have starters but they had garlic and stilton mushrooms on the menu so we could not resist............and they were delicious by the way! Not wanting to over fill we both had a salad and again it was delicious, large and fresh. No room for pudding!! If you're in Minehead don't think about going anywhere else, we certainly won't anymore.

We had an amazing Sunday dinner and meal at the wheelhouse on Easter Sunday. The staff were very helpful and it was lovely how they knew their regular customers and were helpful toward everyone. Would highly recommend booking as it is only a small place. The best meal out we had while on holiday.

Excellent restaurant, we booked for 1:00 pm on Saturday but we arrived early as the weather was awful, they didn’t have any issue accommodating us early with our little doggy, however, you will need to book as this seems very popular and the reason is that the food is superb!! Homemade food, very reasonable price…to finish the desserts have the same standard of the food! Thank you for a lovely food and attention!

We have eaten here many times. This occasion was for Valentine's Day, which offered a fabulous set meal. I started with pate, my husband had the whitebait, and then we both had gorgeous beef bourgignon. We shared a triple dessert platter. And with a glass.of prosecco and a red rose on the table. As ever the service was exceptional, and the owners really friendly. Highly recommend

Very nice, very welcoming and very accommodating when we booked as I mentioned having two large dogs and the staff gave a table in the corner so the dogs were out of the way. The only let down is that the meat for the Sunday lunch seemed like it had been microwaved to heat it back up. The pavlova was unbelievably good and obviously made in house rather than bought in.

Taking the last available indoor table on a Saturday night, we were treated to a truly great meal, cooked to order, at a really reasonable price. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and the staff were professional and concerned for great service. Warmly recommended.

What a super evening! We wanted somewhere with a varied menu offering more than one Vegetarian dish. We were not disappointed! My husband said it was the tastiest Veggie Burger he had ever had. Everything on the menu looked so appetising that we ended up sharing a desert as well as having a starter, something we never do normally. Both food and wine were very reasonably priced. Gary was a FAB host to the extent that, when he couldn't order us a Taxi back to Dunster, he nipped home to get the car and drove us back to our B&B! Definitely above and beyond. Thank you. A cosy casual restaurant serving roast dinner on a Sunday. Vegetables are served in a separate dish so you can pick what you like. The dessert menu looked pretty good and I did see some come out of the kitchen however I was full from the main! Serves me right for having a big breakfast earlier in the day!

Attractive restaurant. Attentive staff. Restaurant had great reviews. I had steak and kidney pie with new potatoes and veg. Delicious, couldn’t fault it. My sister had chicken curry which looked great but the chicken was so dry it was difficult for her to swallow, lovely mango chutney, popadum and rice. She should have complained but she didn’t feel she could as she ate most of it. My brother in law had the yearned for cod and chips. He said it was edible but it looked like something I might have had in my freezer from Iceland. Average size triangle of fish with a pale flat batter on it, a small amount of chips and half of those were bits of chips. Definitely not worth the price. He also felt that his starter of whitebait was something that had just been got out of a freezer, but again he ate it. I said he should have complained but he said that he ate it so didn’t feel he could. A very disappointing end to our minehead mini break.

This is a great restaurant for hassle free gluten free dining. The menu has a good range of choices, food is delicious and the service is excellent. The GF options are an integral part of the experience. We ate here twice on this holiday, but have also visited in the past and had an excellent meal that time too. Booking is recommended though as it is quite small and very popular.

Waited a long time to try the wheelhouse in minehead .home cooked food nice .dissapointed with service. Would have been nice is someone had asked us if all was OK or if we enjoyed food . When it came time to pay the staff were to busy chatting to acknowledge us and it would have been n ice if they had given us our change instead of just taking money and carried on talking .

Booked this restaurant as the main place to eat with friends for a long weekend in Minehead as it was number one on the local restaurant list. We were not disappointed. Faultless service, excellent food, good menu choices, quiet background music, and friendly ambience.

A popular restaurant with excellent food - so we booked ahead! The prices are good, but food was excellent. We went there twice during our week in Minehead. Staff were very helpful. The meals were mostly English classics. But there the comparison ends, because the food served was excellent. Their home made steak and kidney pie was a-ma-zing :). There was a good atmosphere in the restaurant - several local folk who were regulars there from the way they were greeted and known to staff. Always a good sign!

Booked the last available inside table the day before for Sunday lunch. So glad we did. Good size mains leaving room for dessert. Had a pork lunch (with roast pots, carrots and tenderstem broccoli) followed by cheesecake with raspberries and raspberry coulis. Excellent. May return for another lunch later in the week.

Went there with a friend for Lunch. Had the steak and it was cooke perfectly. The chips were amazing and so were the Onion Rings. The old building is a nice atmosphere inside (Wish they had AC but most old building done so can’t really complain) Staff were Great and Attentive. The food came out fast. Not far from beach. Good menu but not very big. Food was lovely. I had the curry, not over spiced but tasty. Prices not too bad.

Lovely find in Minehead along the avenue, we stopped for lunch after seeing the specials board and were not disappointed. Family run establishment, Kim was lovely and so was her husband/partner/live in man friend, i think his name was trevor or Manuel, he spoke a little Spanish?! The service was good, we just wanted some water and lunch which didn't disappoint. We had a lovely pork and apple burger with colslaw, onion rings and home made chips. Good restaurant choice if you are vegan, vegetarian or need a gluten free meal (there is a separate gf menu with lots of choice). There is seating inside and out. Service was quick and friendly and the food was very well presented & tasted good, but perhaps needed just a little bit more flavour at times. It's also dog friendly both outside and inside the restaurant, but just check when booking for inside if there are any other dogs in other bookings - the restaurant is small and so has a 1 dog policy, but they are accommodating & friendly - best to just have a chat pre-booking. Would definitely go back for a meal!
