Very disappointing. Service very slow. Dull menu and awful food. Made worse that non of the staff were in a position to resolve the issues as the manager was absent. We would advise you look elsewhere for a decent meal.

Quite honestly I’m astounded by the handful of recent negative reviews. I do, luckily take these in balance when booking, luckily for me. Visited today with my wife for lunch, having only discovered the pub driving through a local village and seeing a road closed sign saying the pub was unaffected by the road closure, A second piece of luck. The George is spectacularly done, the precise mix of restoration and updating, an amazing job by the owners and an exceptional first impression. If you’re not wowed when you walk in you need an eye test. The service that some have criticised couldn’t have been better, a very warm welcome immediately on arrival and a smooth check in for our lunch at 2.30. Now to the food… Being fairly local we have tried and keep a ‘list’ of favourite places to go for Sunday lunch amongst other things. The George takes an immediate top three spot. The others if you’re interested are The Killingworth Castle, The Boxing Hares and The Chequers at Churchill. So very tough competition. Everything about our visit was first class. Super tender roast beef, perfectly cooked roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshires. If you’re anywhere nearby and fancy a roast, try The George. You’d have to be deranged to find fault with this lovely, cosy, traditional country pub.

Very disappointing. The staff were not particularly welcoming and generally pretty unprofessional. This started with the lady behind the bar being unable to use a corkscrew resulting in me having to open the bottle of wine myself (it was very easy). When it came to the meal, the starter arrived reasonably promptly and was perfectly nice. However we then had to wait for an age for our main course, despite several reminders to the staff (who continued to be pretty grumpy and unapologetic), When the food did arrive it was fine, but absolutely nothing special. What was worse was having to ask multiple times for glasses of wine and waiting for up to 20 minutes for them to arrive. We then got served a glass of wine that we hadn't ordered, which made the waitress even more grumpy. The bill included a 12.5% service charge. We said we would pay the charge out of goodwill, but when we suggested we were very unhappy with the speed and quality of service, the lady (same one unable to open bottle of wine) was extremely/ unacceptably cold, actually quite challenging and totally unapologetic. Please take feedback as constructive criticism from well meaning customers, although these particular customers (relatively local) will not be coming back anytime soon unless this potentially lovely pub gets its act together....

We walked to the pub from our campsite on a lovely sunny day. There was a lot of us so we sat around the corner. We couldn’t have been made to feel less welcome. The barmaid was rude and incompetent. I do understand it was a large order but we tried to help with grouping the drinks. It didn’t. When we one of us returned to the bar of a smaller second order the hostility was still there. They had run out of almost all the wine by glass, which was fine but when we asked which wines do you have, we were handed a manu and told they are on there! No we have just ask for most of them and you have said no. The drink were very expensive Aperol £13, coke or Fanta £3.50 and they tried to charge service of 12% on drink. It was just a very uncomfortable experience and all we had done was walk in to an empty bar. The pub was very pretty and so was the village and park. We will not be coming back.

We received a warm welcome from the young man at the bar. Received a message the day before arrival to say that due to staffing issues they weren't serving meals on the Sunday evening, which was disappointing, but they were hoping to get another chef soon. The rooms were in a lovely little garden/courtyard setting, although I understand that there were also rooms in the main building. Car parking was behind the pub with easy access for people with disabilities. It was in a peaceful, quiet location in the village. Breakfast was lovely and we struck lucky with some brief sunshine, so were able to sit outside, served by Andreea who was lovely and very chatty.

Sorry to say I was so disappointed in this pub. Expected better. Manager was rude to me anyway because I pointing out a blood like stain on our bedding cover . After that well that was it. I know he was run off his feet because of staffing problems but end of the day this was not a cheap stay. I expected more. He just said when I showed him the stain it wasn’t blood. Well I’m afraid it very much looked like it. He apologised to my husband the following morning but I’m afraid too late and to the wrong person. I’m the one he should have apologised to my husband does not choose where we stay I do. Plus I’m the one whom writes all the reviews. I was also expecting a seafood restaurant but only thing that resembles seafood was fish and chips. The food was nice and I did give a good tip for that. Breakfast good and room nice. Just a pity it was spoiled.

This was our third recent stay at The George. Our first stay had been brilliant in all respects, our second not quite as good but still okay, but this latest stay was shocking. Firstly the good things - our room (8) was excellent. Clean, comfortable, quiet and with all the amenities we needed. Couldn't fault it. The staff during the evening were also excellent (see more below). The breakfast in the morning was okay but not great. The evening experience - we had booked a table for 8pm so arrived in the bar at 7.30pm for a drink. The bar area is quite small and was rammed with people, with two young ladies doing their best to keep up with demand (and doing well). We got some menus and headed into the restaurant at 8pm. We instantly got the impression that service was not going well. The same bar staff plus the manager were dashing around at 100mph and yet we could tell that many customers were not looking happy. After a 45 minute wait we asked if it would be possible to order - to be told (with huger apologies) that they only had burgers and fish and chips - all other menu options were off. We ordered two burgers (and more wine!). It took another 45 minutes for the food to arrive and we witnessed throughout this time the many complaints of customers not getting their food. Eventually the frantic activity started to calm as groups of customers left, and we ordered desserts, which were so bad we didn't eat them. Throughout all this the manager and the two bar/restaurant staff were run off their feet but remained calm, cheerful, full of apologies and stuck together as a team. So, two big issues - three front of house staff are simply not enough for a busy Saturday night. The manager removed all charges for food and drink from our account - that cost alone would have paid for a couple of extra staff for the evening. I'm sure many other customers will have received refunds. It's false economy and shocking staff care by the owners. Secondly, how can a restaurant run out of all menu options but two half way through service? I'm afraid this was our third and last visit.

Eight of us plus our young granddaughter had booked a lovely place to stay, and the George was the closest pub for being able to walk for a special meal. We had read some not so good reports from recent visitors and were worried that my wife’s 60th birthday and her mother’s 80th celebration dinner might not be as good as we hoped. Our fears were sadly not unfounded. We arrived and were seated, ordered drinks - all well so far, except the Sauvignon blanc wasn’t on, and only 2 of the 3 ales on the menu were available. We ordered some starters. They came promptly, except for one. There was a complete lack of serving staff in sight, but from our table we could see that the last starter was on the counter. So I went up and the chef said that it was ours and I might as well take it. So I brought the starter from the serving station to our table. Hardly my job! They were nice, but the liver parfait (pate by another name!) came with not nearly enough bread to eat it with. As there was still no one about to ask, I went up the bar and asked for more bread (and got myself another pint while I was there). Dreadful lack of serving staff, although the two girls chatting behind the bar didn’t seem too busy at all! Plus they charged us £4 for the extra bread! After an inordinately long time our mains were delivered to our table. Fish and chips- fine Burger- nice except the fries were no way skin-on as advertised. Chicken schnitzel- nice, but the accompanying leaves were hardly inspiring! Steak and Guinness pie- delicious, except it was the size of a Sainsburys mini-pork pie and was 80% pastry with no more than 2 pieces of meat in it. We were then left for a very long time before the table was cleared and again before we were offered deserts, and then in the end my daughter went up to order two crème brûlée. Verdict on these- they were fine, but the fingers of shortbread that came with them were inedible- stale and tasteless. We were to put it mildly underwhelmed! I went up when we had asked for our bill and made it clear that we would not be paying the automatic 12.5% service charge and made sure that the 15% local discount was applied as promised by our accommodation. It’s all very well charging premium prices for food and drink, but absolutely not OK to skimp on the staff provided to deliver premium service. The fact that one of the starters was not brought to our table indicates that the staff were being expected to do too much in the busy pub. Very disappointing. To top it off, we mentioned the occasion on our online booking form, but this was not acknowledged on the night.

I’ve been to this place a few times now and literally cannot fault it. Today I was there for Sunday lunch with some friends and my dog, and the whole experience was just perfect. The food was ample and excellent, the service was great and the fact that the whole venue is dog friendly just made for a perfect Sunday afternoon. As a vegetarian I usually don’t have a lot of choice for a roast scenario, but today I had the option of 2 different main dishes. Brilliant. Highly recommend this pub, for a leisurely, unhurried dining experience.

This is our third visit to The George Inn in Barford St Michael and we just love it here. A gorgeous, dog friendly pub consisting of bedrooms in the pub itself and garden rooms too. The rooms are lovely, spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable (they are extremely warm with under floor heating, which being an unusually mild December, we turned off). The pub is fabulous; complete with a log fire and a great selection of drinks. Since our last visit the back of the establishment has been renovated and is even better than before with ceiling heaters, bi-folding doors and a fabulous new kitchen where you can see the chefs at work. The food is vastly improved from our previous trips (although an addition to the veggie options would be appreciated) and the staff are just delightful, a special shout out to Mattie, the General Manager, who went above and beyond with helpful information of where to visit and helped me enormously with what I could and couldn’t eat, as I’m a coeliac. Can’t wait to book our 4th visit next year!😊

This place looked so promising and with a TA rating of over 4 we were looking forward to a good meal. But we didn't get one. Firstly the food is pretty expensive which I don't mind paying so long as the quality and service is good. I had the venison casserole (£22) with 'seasonal vegetables' and creamed potatoes. The casserole was small but admittedly tasty) but the mash was about a dessert spoon full and the vegetables consisted of four small undercooked bits of kale. My partner had fish and chips (£18) but the chips were so hard they were inedible. We were underwhelmed and decided to skip dessert if the main course was anything to go by! 12.5% is automatically added to the bill (including drinks) making the price even higher. I was going to ask for the service charge to be deducted but to be fair the service was OK and they did replace the chips. But we felt like we'd been ripped off. The pub is lovely on the inside but the experience wasn't enjoyable. We asked to be moved to an other table as there was a family with a toddler who insisted on screaming and running around without its parents making any effort to control her until we left at 9pm. The second table was next to another couple who had a dog that continually broke wind whilst we were eating and kept doing so until the owners took it outside to 'deal with it'. We won't be going back.

We stayed for 2 nights. On arrival after a long day out, it was clear the the staff definitely lacked warmth towards guests. There is pretty much zero chat, and no interest in where you've been or come from. We had travelled from Cumbria over 5 hours away, and expected a much more friendly tone from this kind of accommodation and were quite disappointed in the staff attitude. Our room was fine, although a bit dusty and had cobwebs around which could have been easily sorted. The toilet flush was also broken and went round a full 360 degrees! The room also lacks a fridge, so getting milk seems like a chore and an inconvenience to staff when you have to keep going to ask for it at the bar. There was a clear lack of instructions on anything they wanted you to do. On the second day we left the sign out for our room to be cleaned as we wanted fresh tea bags, towels etc. We went out for the day and returned to the room which hadn't been touched all day. We don't like to complain or make a fuss, but had to go and ask for this to be done as we needed fresh towels having left ours in the bath. This was sorted quickly, but was disappointing as why give us the sign to leave out if it was going to be ignored? We had food there both nights which was fine. However lack of instruction on where they want you to sit etc. The risotto portion was small for the expensive price, and the camembert we had wasn't cooked properly either as was solid in the middle defeating the point of having it to dip bread in. Everything food/drinks is pricey, but seems to be the way in the area. Overall the restaurant and garden area is quite scruffy which was a let down after seeing how attractive the pub is from the outside. Dead flowers are left in vases for days, dead flies on the floor and sheets hanging on walls. The outside needs new fresh seating too and a general neaten up. Chairs and dog toys are scattered and never picked up or organises. Bird poo on the tables needs cleaned too. When paying so much for accommodation and food etc, it wouldn't take much for the place to be clean and tidy. The service and staff unfortunately do lack warmth and there is no friendliness at all really which is such a shame. Every interaction seems like an inconvenience. The turn over is high and new people there every day so I think that this is the reason for this, as there isn't much effort from the staff. Only staff member who was really lovely was the young girl with long dark hair - unsure of her name but she was the only one we could really say went the extra mile so thank you! One point to raise is also the issue of drink drivers leaving the pub after consuming a considerable amount of alcohol. Staff must realise this issue and should be addressing it. Overall a little disappointed and will not be returning. A bit of warmth from staff and tidying up would go a long way here. Not worth the money really but we didn't let it spoil our trip to the Cotswolds.

We booked a couple of nights here on the recommendation of a friend, and it's a recommendation we'd certainly pass on. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Cotswolds, this hotel is an absolutely gem. We were given a room in the stables at the back which meant we bad the bliss of absolutely silence both nights - we didn't hear a sound. WE had everything we could have wanted in the room - great comfy bed, big bath and shower with great water pressure, coffee machine with ample supply of pods and fresh milk left outside the room in the morning. We had breakfast in the room both mornings and we couldn't fault it. We also ate in the bar, next to the log fire, bliss. There were many little touches which showed what a labour of love the George is to the owner - from little sweet treats after our meals to fruity shots in the morning. These little touches really made the stay feel special.

The food was excellent (poached eggs on smashed avocado for breakfast was lovely), served promptly and very good portion sizes. The room I had was huge with a very new bathroom suite and a fantastic rainfall shower. I will use this hotel again

We came for Sunday lunch this weekend. My friend and I shared the scotch egg and the squid as we could not choose! I had the pork belly which was absolutely unreal. My friends ordered the lamb and the beef which were also perfect! 10/10

We stayed for a night midweek whilst visiting nearby and we had the enormous room above the bar. The room was very well appointed with huge and immensely comfortable bed. The bathroom was extremely spacious with an excellent and powerful shower, a free-standing bath and two hand basins. View to the rear was onto open countryside. It should be noted that sound from the bar penetrates above and so light sleepers may either wish to chose another room or at least enquire if there is a late-running function. We were untroubled. We ate both dinner and breakfast, and each was excellent. The menus were varied with a good choice of dishes. Service was excellent at both, as it was at the bar.The staff were all charming and helpful and we would be more than happy to return. Highly recommended.

I was planning a mystery drive and luncheon for our classic car club and found this venue online, looked good so booked a table. Eight of us participated in the trip, we all loved the venue and thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, I chose the roast lamb, this was the best Sunday lunch I have ever had, the lamb and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. The service was excellent, the Inn itself has been beautifully refurbed, cosy seats by the log fire, we all agreed we must return. Thank you Dan and staff.

Great welcome, great food and very comfy bed !Stayed here overnight on Valentines Day. Both Managenet and staff all very helpful and friendly, We had a Taster Menu which was superb and all the Main Menu dishes that were heading to other tables looked good too.We stayed in a very large room (Room 1) in the main buiding which was delightful.Agree with earlier reviewer that you can hear the noise from the Bar through the Bedroom Floor but no "Lock In" when we we were there so all was quiet by just after 11 pm ! Great Breakfast in the morning with plenty of Cooked options. The owners are really making an effort with this lovely Pub - we will definitely be returning

Stayed here for two nights. The rooms are very impressive. Superb fixtures and fittings all done to a high spec. Now the breakfast..... streaky bacon! Yuk! Don’t think I’ve ever stayed in a place where I was paying over £125 a night for bed and breakfast that did not automatically serve back bacon. They do have a log burner, however, seem reluctant to keep it lit.... subsequently it is a large area that is very chilly. Ran out of plain crisps and no olives.... slightly bizarre in a rather posh pub. To sum up, staff very pleasant, rooms amazing, pub needs more heating if they intend not to light the fire!

The George is a lovely pub/restaurant with rooms. You can tell that the owner has really invested in The George. Whilst the food is delicious (especially the sweet chilli chicken starter), service friendly and the pub is cosy, I would advise against booking one of the rooms in the main pub as the floors are not soundproofed and you will be kept up very late, especially on a Saturday night when locals have a lock in. My fiancé and I were kept up until 2am. The kingsize bed we were in was super comfortable but as there is no soundproofing, there’s no point having a comfortable bed if you can’t sleep. There are other rooms available that aren’t in the main house and I would advise booking one of those. When we flagged the lock in and being kept up until 2am due to the noise, the Manager did say it is because there is no soundproofing. If management are aware of this, there should be a note mentioning this at time of booking or on their website. There isn’t. We ended up spending £486 on a 2 night stay in the pub so it isn’t exactly cheap and was supposed to be a relaxing and romantic weekend away. It would’ve been if we’d been able to sleep

Beautiful location in the countryside, newly renovated. Not stayed overnight but rooms look fabulous. Only had lunch with a friend which was good, however, the batter on my beer battered cod was lovely and crispy on the outside but unfortunately soft and stodgy on the inside due to it being too thick. A shame because everything else was great.

Clearly the George has been renovated in recent times and the whole place is now a warm and friendly place to go. The food for Sunday lunch menu was very good, and all tasted like fresh local produce.

I love the ambience of the place and the food was top notch, I chose the special of the day which was duck breast and it was delicious in every way. this place is well worth a visit and my new favourite pub in the area. I'll be back again very soon.

What a wonderful menu for lunch, great cooking and super service. My friend and I have been checking out the pubs of Oxfordshire for well over two years now. The George has made it straight into our top list! Midweek lunch so quite quiet. Nice old pub, roomy inside and some nice outside tables too. A number of very interesting dishes and a short specials board but interesting choices for the vegetarians, great for fish eaters, the meat options looked good too. Service was very thoughtful. Our waitress was only on day 2 of working there- she did really well with two picky oldsters. It was a delight to be there. For starters we tried the mackerel pate with beetroot and horseradish cream with toasted sourdough. That was 'very tasty, yes, very nice indeed.' and I had the heritage tomatoes with goat brie and toasted sourdough and a tasty dressing. What fantastic tomatoes. A riot of colour and flavour!. The starters were quite sizable. We were quite hungry.

We fancies going somewhere new today for a Bank Holiday lunch and after trying 3 places who stopped doing food between lunch and dinner (who does that these days?) we found The George via Google, called ahead to check they were still serving food after 3pm and hoorah they were.

We are local to Barford and my 2 girlfriends and I ate at the George Inn last night for the first time since the new manager had taken over recently - the change in the food and price of wine was definitely for the better. Our meal was fantastic and we had excellent service from Alice.

George inn offers good value for money in an idealic location on the edge of the cotswolds. The rooms are spacious with good size bed, tea facilities, large TV and a bathroom with his/her sink, which is a nice touch.

Was driving the back roads from Derby to London and came across this gem. It is a charming place with an outside patio and a small bar. The food was outstanding. I had the best duck I have ever had. And the sticky cabbage was tangy and accompanied the savory duck perfectly. I don’t know if I could find this place again but i will try the next time I am in England again. The atmosphere is great, the service was good and the food was amazing.

Sunday lunch at The George. Polite and very helpful staff - nothing too much of a problem. Menu was very appealing and everything sounded good. So we had a selection of starters - all were enjoyed and absolutely delicious. Free house so decent range of beers on tap. Pub has recently received a minor ‘face lift’ and under new management - it’s excellent and must now rate as one of the best in the area. Definitely will return...

Great place for fish and chips, you get a good portion of chips and nice size piece of chunky fish, it is very delicious and I enjoy it ever time, not greasy and value for money. Great if you have been out and about and feeling a little tired and hungry for some hot food, it will always hit the spot. You can eat in or take away, there is plenty to choose from, go and try for yourself you will not be disappointed.
