After over 10 visits to The George & Dragon in Ightham, my recent experience left a bad impression. Due to poor WiFi and card connection issues, I couldn’t pay my £40 bill and was asked to leave my backpack as security while I fetched cash. As someone from the Guernsey community, I found this insulting - I wouldn’t vanish over a £40.00 bill. For an establishment I’ve supported many times, this was a frustrating and disappointing experience.

We were a casual party of three for lunch. Service was exemplary from Misha, who was single-handedly managing the restaurant. Our food was on par too: whitebait, charcuterie, broccoli & Stilton soup, grilled chicken, pork sausage and mash, apple crumble, and lemon posset. Certainly worth a return visit.

We really enjoyed our Father's Day meal here. The pub is in a beautiful village setting and boasts the original wonky beams and low doorways of a 16th century drinking hole. The menu is simple and unpretentious, but the food is delicious, cooked to perfection and generous in portion size. The staff are friendly, helpful and gave us the space and time to enjoy our meal as a family group of 9. We stumbled upon the pub as a happy accident but would definitely book again.

The menu states they do sandwiches mon - sat. We drove there on a day out and tried to order two sandwiches and chips. The staff told us the kitchen staff “didn’t want to do sandwiches”. The place wasn’t close to full and the “chefs” were just stood in the kitchen not even mid-cook. They said they’d do us a big, hot meal but refused to do a cheese sandwich despite not having any advertised “end of lunch service”. The front of house staff were lovely and really embarrassed by the kitchen staff, offering us suggestions of other places to go which turned out to be lovely.

Great food, good service and plenty of availability at late notice. As not that busy on this Saturday night there was a slight lack of atmosphere. Car park has less spaces than would be necessary if pub was busier with visitors so might need to find street parking or round the corner in the village hall car park.

We booked here last minute for Sunday lunch. The pub is in a very pretty location and has a fine history, but the interior feels soulless, a little cheap and entirely lacking in ambiance. It is pretty unwelcoming and utilitarian and certainly doesn't live up to its location/exterior. Staff, however, were lovely and both friendly and efficient. Starters and main courses were really tasty and well cooked, with decent portions too. Dessert was a little disappointing as the quality wasn't as good. I suspect in the apple crumble the filling was either brought in pre made or used tinned apple instead of fresh. All in all, savoury was good, sweet wasn't, service was good, dining room wasn't, so all in all I wouldn't go again

BOOKED FOR LUNCH FOR 11 of us portions very small the chicken linguinie was a very small offering and should have come with spinach . We asked where the spinach was to our server she said she would ask the chef we got no response. Also it was almost cold and the chicken very dry . Very dissapointing not cheap for child size portions. Will not be returning.

We went here a few years ago and had a wonderful meal. Thought we would pay a return visit. A main dish was unavailable as was a dessert. They had no Rose wines. Our meal was nice, but we were not offered any sauces. It wasn't advertised that the burger came with cheese, so I had to remove that before I could eat it. I had a glass of Chardonay, 125 size, for which I was charged £6.10! Sorry an absolute rip off. We will not be returning. My response to your reply. I did not mishear the waitress, I asked if you had Pinot Blush which she advised you didn't have but did have Zinfadel, then said you didn't have any Rose. Another customer was also advised the same when he asked for a Rose. P.S I had a 125 Rose wine in another pub today it was £4.90! You are definitely ripping people off!

Visited last night , disappointing evening. They were not busy but we were placed in a room on our own where basically the staff kept forgetting about us and therefore the service was patchy at best. My starter the garlic prawns were very tasty , then had the special lamb tagine as a main. The sauce although not what I was expecting was tasty but the lamb was tough and chewy !!! My husband had the whitebait and then a beef burger , both of which he said looked and tasted “ bought in “ and nothing very special. All in all very mediocre and definitely not worth the hefty price. Shame but we won’t be visiting again

Had breakfast in here today, chap came in with his guid dog and was almost refused entry, the owner and his staff are clearly not very clued up when it comes to guide dog legislation, they made him and his dog and the lady with him sit by the door. I'll not be using this cafe ever again. I hope the owner reads this and gets to grip with the legislation along with his staff, 20 years I've been in catering one waitress said!! really!! very very poor experience, especially in this day and age.

We visited The Hengist at 2pm on Sunday 10th November for a family meal of 6 adults & 2 children. The decor looked amazing and the initially very friendly staff took care of our drinks and foods orders well, encouraging us to order extras like gravy and roast potatoes at this point as ‘in his words’ if we didn’t order them now we would have finished our meals by the time they arrived. Having had 2 rounds of drinks all arriving in good time we started to wonder when the food would come. 2 starters of scotch eggs arrived about 30 minutes after ordering but unfortunately the sausage meat part was raw so we let the waiter know that we weren’t happy to eat them. An hour later (so 90 minutes after ordering) we still had no mains, the waiting staff now seemed to be trying to avoid us including to order more drinks and we had to call someone over to ask if at least the kids food could be sent as they were now getting hungry. Soon after a kids pasta and kids roast beef (which had no vegetables whatsoever priced at £11) came out. Still no mention or apology of our wait on food plus a couple of us were now without a drink. 20 minutes later when the children had finished their meals and no check on our table or explanation for our wait on food had been given we decided we had had enough and we would leave, asking for the bill of what we had consumed. A bill arrived including everything we had ordered including the missing meals, missing extras, returned starters and £5 each for the kids apple juices which were supposed to be included in a kids meal as well as a service charge percentage of all of that on top totalling £300! As you can imagine by this point we were quite annoyed, so having told the waiting staff as such, finally an owner came to our table but instead of apologising or trying to correct the situation we were made to feel like difficult customers. We left having spent over 2 hours not eating any food (except the children) and still having spent £90 (a few beers, 1 glass of wine and 1 gin & tonic). I haven’t left a restaurant this dissatisfied in a long time. I understand sometimes things go wrong in hospitality but some communication, an apology and an offer of reconciliation perhaps in the form of some complimentary drinks could’ve maybe corrected this experience to not leave us feeling quite so outraged that we will not only not return but will also actively avoid recommending anyone to try The Hengist!
