Have stayed here often first time with new management. Came with friends to see a band called Kick The Fridge who were fantastic as always. Had an excellent stay and very good well cooked breakfast. The new family run team were genuinely friendly and made us feel very welcome. They have a very positive forward going approach to the business. Would fully recommend staying here.

This used to be the 2nd best place to eat in Bridgnorth… After the Kings Head. The Kings Head is now closed so this place was in a good position to attract foodies who like good food. We have visited this pub/restaurant many times when we are in town, always great service and very good food, waitresses looking after the customers in a professional manner. How things have changed….. Our tour of Shropshire includes visiting market towns and eating out, this was by far the shock of our trip. It’s gone downhill like an Olympic ski event, the service used to be waitressing but now it’s the couple who run the bar.. who were sat drinking and chatting with a group of locals, although they were polite.. they were not near the standard that gave this place its character and good reputation. We booked a table for 7.30pm on a Friday night and apart from 2 groups drinking together, the place was empty, the restaurant area was completely dead. The menu is diluted to a limited choice, not a great menu to choose from.. I ordered the lasagna, I cannot explain enough how bad it was, I was searching for the mincemeat and at most it was about a spoonful, same with the soggy pasta, it was a creamy mush, without a doubt the worst lasagna I’ve ever had and the worst meal so far on our trip. Even the garlic bread was frozen supermarket rubbish that you’d get from a budget restaurant. I’ve given 2 stars because my wife had scampi and chips which you can’t really ruin easily. To top it off, a doorbell noise sounds in the pub to tell the couple that food is ready from the kitchen, no wonder the once great place to eat was empty on a Friday night. We visit Bridgnorth quite a bit, I very much doubt we will eat at The George again unless it changes it’s attitude.

So handy directly opposite Severn Valley Railway and we are so pleased we found the gem of a pub. Everything was spotlessly clean, friendly landlady and landlord and so obliging. When we arrived in the evening we just wanted a snack, rather than something from the full dinner menu and they they could not have been more helpful and arranged sandwiches with the trimmings. Great room, comfortable and everything we needed and a cooked to order breakfast, If you are in the area, a great place to stay,

Good location opposite the steam railway. On a noisy road. Has a garden but this is also on the road. Booked a single night for us at last minute. Staff really friendly. Room clean. BUT bathroom left our confidence in how seriously they took covid 19. The shower was covered in mold and limescale. On a positive note the breakfast was brilliant. Our stay was great, but the bathroom let the pub down. Otherwise a good value for money would have given 5 stars if it had been cleaner

I went to visit this pub, until i saw what was happening.Live band, when there shouldn't be, about 50 customers shoulder to shoulder watching performance, punters wondering in and out to fetch drinks, no door control so i assume no track and trace details taken, though from what i first saw i didn't get that far and drove off.I must assume that Covid-19 is scared of entering this establishment.

After being told by many people how good The George was, and being our nearest pub since moving here in October, we were very keen to give it a try.ZERO welcome from the staff, in fact zero staff behind the bar, eventually being served our drinks by someone having a drink on the customer side, when asked to do so by what I assumed to be the landlady/ manager who was studiously ignoring us whilst having a chat to some other customers. The food we were served redeemed the evening, being very good, but the same person walked through the restaurant three times without a single word - and we were the only customers in there!Have tried again since but with pretty much the same non-welcome. This is the only pub in Bridgnorth where we have encountered this, and we have tried quite a few since moving here, everywhere else has been very friendly and welcoming. We won't be giving The George a third chance.

It has taken me a week to write this review as I am still astounded by the events of last Sunday. We have frequented the George for many years both for a quiet evening drink and for Sunday lunch, although not Sunday lunch so much recently as they have had some problems with chefs and standards had dropped. However on Sunday we had some business in Bridgnorth so decided to have lunch at the George. Having prebooked a table for myself my husband and our son we arrived for a leisurely lunch and placed our order for starters and main courses. We had just settled down with our drinks when the main courses arrived, we told the waitress that we hadn’t had our starters yet, she replied “Oh, you want your starters first?” Quite surprised we said yes please. The main courses were returned to the kitchen and the manager Sue came out and told us that if we wanted starters the main course would be dried up as it had already been put out and there was no food left.As we had come for a leisurely lunch we said we wanted the starters as ordered but if by then the main courses were dried up we would not be willing to pay for them. Sue said she was not going to give the food to us and she would rather throw it in the bin.Thinking this was not going well we decided to go somewhere else to eat and told her we would leave. We were just finishing our drink when Sue reappeared with the main courses and practically threw them on the table. She then lurched forward and shouted in our faces “There you can stick them up your (2 words I was not allowed to print).Stunned silence, the whole pub went quite and turned to stare. The staff hurried over and apologised profusely saying they didn’t know what was the matter with her. After we had got over the initial shock we became quite annoyed and and having never seen such an outburst said we could not possibly eat there having completely lost our appetite. The staff once again apologised but said they could understand.Unfortunately as Sue is the manager there was nobody we could speak to and on leaving the pub I did notice it was a free house so we could not even make a complaint to the brewery.I was told by one of the customers who is a regular there that Sue has an alcohol problem whether this is true or not I don’t know but there is obviously some problem.Needless to say we will not be returning.

This place used to be excellent, I cannot understand what has happened in such a short time to turn my opinion on it's head. The decor hasn't been changed, there is still a lovely log fire. But the service has sped downhill faster than an Olympic luge champion! The bar staff seem disinterested and have little knowledge if their trade (last visit one put a bottle of rather nice red wine into an ice bucket!) the food menu is the same, but the quality if the produce seems to have deteriorated, and I thought that some things which were previously artisan on other visits had been replaced by plasticy mass produced items from a supermarket. The Sunday lunch menu here always used to be a staple whether on my own or with family and friends, but I think we will be moving our patronage away for a while.

We stayed here for a friends 65 birthday, the landlady was very friendly on arrival, made us feel at home. The rooms were lovely and the atmosphere of the pub was great. We went off to the party and returned about 10pm at which point the George was swinging and packed, they had a live band on which were really good. As it was a nice night the girls sat outside, and we danced outside the pub as the windows were open so the music was loud. We really enjoyed ourselves, and made our way to bed, only to find a customer in the pub playing the piano, and he was very good, playing rythmn and blues. Breakfast the next day was excellent and the service was very good, great customer service nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely be returning and would recommend a visit if you are in the area. Well located for access to the Severn valley railway. Just across the road. Having stayed at the George several times before we knew we would get a warm welcome. Great breakfast. Just be aware that on Fridays and Saturdays there is normally good live music in the bar that finishes around 11.30 so don't bank on an early night! If you like real ale there is always a good selection of up to 4 ales on most of the time. Good extensive menu of well prepared food from the main menu and specials board. The food was tasty although the sizzler meal I ordered was unlike any other sizzler I have had, nonetheless it was enjoyable. Hotel cleanliness, location, attractiveness, room comfort and quality of food were all top notch. Car parking immediately over the road is only £3 per day. We stayed for 2 nights and couldn't fault these aspects and we were greeted in a friendly manner at reception on arrival. Downsides, we were told on arrival that breakfast was 8am-11am. The next morning we were told it was only until 10am. So we rushed. When I re-checked the website it clearly states 8am-11am. So we lost an hour's lie-in. Challenge this if it happens to you. That said, the breakfast staff were very friendly and efficient. Also, the music in hotel - too loud! It was "acceptable" of an evening however when we came back to our room for an afternoon rest, we could hear similar music for the duration of our rest. Not good. I would have given the hotel 5 stars but for these two negatives I'm giving it three out of five. That said, I would stay again as overall it helped make our stay in Bridgnorth a memorable one.

There were nine of us dining at The George for the first time, as part of our annual school reunion. We were not disappointed - we received great service from the excellent waitress Marie, despite the pub being predictably near full on a Saturday evening, the food was great and the selection of drinks at the bar was superb.(I personally loved the Brakspear's Oxford Gold). The atmosphere was great and although the live music was not to our personal taste, I could see that the many regulars loved this, and in any case it only started at around 9.15, and apparently finishes at 11, so no problem there. Amazing evening from start to finish. Due to a number of reasons our party turned up in dribs and drabs and we eventually sat down an hour later than we should have (our fault) but the staff at no point made us feel rushed. The 3 course meal was stunning even though, again, it was our fault we sat down late. The food was cooked as if we were meant to sit down at that time. The back room was perfect for a group of this size, indeed it could fit a group of 18-20 IMO and still be perfect. I particularly liked that with a large group sometimes you are placed on a number of tables but this was 1 large table... Perfick!Live music was an added bonus. Having rang round a few places before hand the George seemed perfect and it did not disappoint and the PRICE per person just could not be faulted.A REAL pleasure thank you so much to all the staff... could not recommend highly enough!

This place used to be great - good pies and pub grub. But I think they have a new chef - who needs to go back to cookery school. With the exception of the burger, all six of our meals were not great and expensive - £7 for a tiny piece of pate. Worse of all, the pies are a shadow of the former ones - especially if the crust is burnt.

A slightly more expensive retaurant experience at The George but well worth it. The atmosphere of this pub/restaurant is very pleasant. Locals mingle with occasional diners creating a warm and friendly ambience, helped by the stylish and tasteful decor. We booked our table by email and when we arrived there was a name card on the table nearest the door. A nice touch. The George has a wide range of well kept real ales! A lovely assortment of starterws were on offer. We had olives and bread for two - the olives were fresh (not pickled) and the bread was warm out of the oven. A large plate of food for two people! My wife had sea bass, perfectly cooked with seasonal vegetables. I had the Steak and Stilton pie. Absolutely delicious and very well cooked by the Chef. Vegetables were just right. Desserts were just as tasty and coffee afterwards was as good as any barista coffe house (very important!). Our mains were £12 and £10 each. Our starter was £8 between us. Generous portions and oh! the desserts! (£4-5 each). Our waitress was a relative of the owner and had just the right tough of profesionalism and informality. We will definitely be returning.

We all, 15 of us, had a lovely evening to celebrate shall we say my 'significant birthday!' surprise meal last Thursday. Sue and everyone at 'The George' couldn't do enough to make us feel relaxed and welcome, nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic, we all had a brilliant time - thank you!

This is a great little hotel on the edge of Bridgnorth, right opposite the Severn Valley Railway.Parking is actually on the SVR car park at £3 a day.The George is a light airy, modern place with charming and friendly staff.Decor in the public spaces is light and colourful with modern decoration and lighting.Bedrooms are named after famous trains.Ours was light and roomy with a boutique feel about it. Located where it is, you are well placed to explore the many routes into the Upper Town (Hope you have good legs)Bar has a good selection of well kept beers. On the Friday night we were staying there was a great acoustic duet in the bar.Volume perfect for the space - quiet enough to eat and talk as well as a good space to get closer for those who want to listen. Great repetiore too!Thoroughly recommended

Group of us went, I only had a jacket spud with chilli chicken, very good and good price for it. The bar menu is a lower price than the main menu. The chips here are awesome, a must try. All happy.

I went to the George with Sister and Brother-in-law for dinner. The portions are HUGE, but the quality is excellent and the price is very reasonable, with starters averaging at around £5 and mains ranging from about £10-£20. Lovely setting right across the road from the Severn Valley Railway Station and serving good real ale too! Highly recommended!

My partner and I called in at this restaurant and we managed to get a table . It was one of the best three course meals have had this year. The starter was sweet chilli chicken with trimmings. The special chicken chassaur which was well presented and filling. To round off I had homemade fruit crumble and delicious custard. My boyfriend had a fab tuna thick steak and he finished off with a lovely treacle tart. Just ace. The staff were very friendly and we even met the chef and gave him a complement . Defo recommend this place

on a first visit to Bridgnorth friends booked a table for us in the George. As soon as we arrived the staff were very welcoming. The service was quick, efficient and the food amazing. It was the quality and presentation of a top hotel restaurant. I can recommend the Greek salad and the lemon syrup sponge heavenly , all at a reasonable price. We stayed all night and the live music was great. The best 5 hours I've had the pleasure to spend in a pub. Well done to all staff, the atmosphere was brilliant.

The staff here were so friendly and helpful and the meal was delicious. The chef adapted one of the starters, missing out the black pudding to make it veggie -friendly. The quality and taste of the food was good and all courses were beautifully presented. The cost was very reasonable for the quality and quantity.

Would recommend this place to anyone. Had Sunday lunch which was great a few weeks ago but last night (sat night) went with my partner and had yet another fab meal followed by listening to a great band as well. A wonderful night and you didn't even have to pay to get in. Can't wait for my next visit next Sunday with the family.

We recently ate at the George with friends for a Sunday lunch, the beef couldn't have been more tender and the salmon perfectly cooked, the puddings were beautiful and presentation was second to none! ........ so we decided to go again today and again completely faultless! ordered the cod which had the nicest lightest batter ever! and the chicken/chorizo supreme which was lovely ( both huge portions!) I couldn't get the separate veg and potatoes on the photo! ..... so decided to take a snap and write a review because the food here deserves a massive thumbs up! Chef you serve fantastic food! A lovely pub with a great atmosphere and really friendly staff .... Jane & Sarah to name a couple and Sue the owner always gives a really homely welcome!

We were meeting up with friends to celebrate the birth of a baby and we had an amazing evening at The George. It's a great place with a lovely atmosphere. Sue who runs the George was brilliant. We found ourselves a great space where we could celebrate without driving everyone else crazy! And . . . the food was incredible. Delicious, beautifully presented and so good we are all still talking about it the next day. Great quality, lovely generous portions - stunning! The service was great, the surroundings were great and there was even a really good band on too. What a bonus! Can't wait to go back and do it all again (especially now I know they have rooms too!). Thank you to Sue and her great team for helping us to have a truly memorable evening 'wetting the baby's head'.

Not been in the George for years and was very impressed by the décor and ambience on entering - it wasn't busy being a Wednesday lunchtime I suppose but the lady behind the bar was friendly and served us with a smile! My niece and I both had sandwiches which were served on beautiful bread with fresh salad and crisps - two drinks, two sandwiches £17.95 - excellent value! The only minus is that the car parking is opposite which is owned by Severn Valley Railway and it costs £3!! We managed to slip into a side street nearly - I did notice that after six the pub does give you a parking voucher to park there - however, this wouldn't detract me from visiting again on a lunchtime - might have to park further away and walk down - at least we would build up an appetite and might try one of the hot meals which looked great!

Excellent 82nd birthday meal tonight in the George. The starters were so tasty, tender asparagus, wonderful risotto and mozzarella tartlets. Followed by mains of duck in a rich cherry jus and lamb shank that fell off the bone. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made the birthday "boy" feel very special, big thanks to all!

I am sorry to say that our xmas meal was ruined by an unfortunate chain of events. I had booked xmas dinner for 3 of my closest friends at this pub after visiting it a few times in the last few weeks thinking what a lovely homely feel it had. We arrived at the pub and found that a band was setting up for a gig, this is a small pub and the band therefore take over most of the sitting room. After making my presence known the girl showed us our table which was right next to the band! How could you possibly eat dinner with the band playing 2 feet away from your table! we asked to move and I said I thought we would actually be in the restaurant area I was told that I should have stated that when I booked. NO I think its the responsibility of the licensee to tell me that I wouldn't be seated in the restaurant and that she had seated us two feet from the band! To be fair she did say that the band wouldn't start til 9!!!!! Great when we would just be served with our main meal!We were offered another seat in the snug which unfortunately was by a door that was used by people to go out to have a cigarette, so that was unsuitable. After asking three times to be moved, the staff were very accommodating and we did move to the restaurant area but it was very snug and cramped. The band started their sound checks from about 8.30 til approx. 9 when they started a full session. We couldn't hear ourselves think and it ruined what was supposed to be a lovely night.I have worked for a brewery for 13 years and understand that in the pub game you need to constantly change and adapt to keep your business going. I think in this instance you should keep customers happy by either having a band and encouraging people to that or do xmas meals and not have the band on those nights. The two certainly don't mix the number of diners lost forever far outweighed the number of customers coming to see the band. This is the first review I have written in a negative sense but feel very justified in writing it.Jo.W

We travelled a fair distance to the George because we wanted to hear a local band that were playing there one Saturday evening. Four of us decided to go early and eat there before the band started. We booked, fortunately, since there are not many tables and they were full. The atmosphere is one of a welcoming old world style pub with a log fire. The food is most definitely as it claims to be and that is homemade. We had the beef and Stilton pie, two of us had chicken, leek and bacon pie and one fish and chips. The chips were the best! Thick cut and tasty. The pie was a huge slice from a huge pie. Finished off with Eton mess which came in knicker blocker glory glasses. Yes they were that big! An excellent meal for a reasonable price. The waitress was very friendly and the service was excellent. The band were terrific too. The jukebox dimes. You can stay there too they have five bedrooms. It is directly opposite the car park for the Severn valley railway and you can park on there. Just ask at the bar for a ticket to avoid paying.

It's interesting when you read these reviews, most praise The George but occasionally there's a very poor review. That's my experience.I haven't eaten in the restaurant and from my experiences in the Bar I won't be in the future. On my first visit I was impressed. The bar was quiet being early evening and midweek and the beer and the service were good. I've recently moved to the area so I was looking for a new 'local' to enjoy both a pint and a meal and I left feeling I'd probably found a good venue.I returned a few nights later. I've moved around a lot in my life and I'm used to going into strange pubs. Like football grounds have 'ends' for the most loyal supporters, in my experience pubs also have an end of the bar where the regulars congregate. That's true here. The barmaid was deep in conversation at that end of the bar. When she did eventually serve me she only briefly paused in her conversation and proceeded to pour me what was, without any doubt, the worst pint of beer I have ever been served. When I finally managed to attract her attention she replaced it whilst still continuing to chat. Not a single word of apology.I've spent all my life in customer-facing businesses so I know every business can have a bad day. I returned a few days ago. This time the same barmaid and two other staff were at the same end of the bar chatting. I waited to be served. One member of staff turned and made eye contact with me but soon turned back and continued chatting. A few moments later I left. The George has had its last chance.I'm sure if you're a regular, and particularly if you regularly stand at the right end of the bar you love the place. I hope you never leave because, in my experience, there won't be many to replace you.

The George went out of their way to ensure we had a good evening, even to the extent of reorganising their dining area. We were a party of 18 and had preordered our meals. We couldn't have asked for better food or service. Well done

I always think it is a positive start to a meal when it is well presented. The George food was wonderfully presented, great attention to detail. The quality of the good was also very good. I had the chicken supreme in the chasseur sauce, it was excellent and very good value. The service was also excellent, polite and informative. The down-side? A personal down-side for me was that they did not permit dogs in any inside area of the pub. This is a rural market town, maybe they should review this policy, as I would love to take my dog into a lovely pub in the town (there are pubs/restaurants in the town that do take dogs) Having said that, I would definitely return.

I had the worst lunch yesterday at the George and feel sure the chef must have been away. The fish and chips were not cooked fresh and had been warmed up. Very poor and almost unedible. I was with an important customer so didn't complain, We won't be returning. Friendly service but terrible food.

Stopped here whilst visiting Shrewsbury for the day. It was a good looking place, clean with shaded outside seating - vital as it was a scorcher. The food was incredibly good value for the delicious meal we had. High quality, large portion size and friendly, helpful staff. Recommended for visitors to the area.

We were recommended this cafe and we weren’t disappointed. My husband and I had the ‘Chocks Away’ full English and as the delivery guy hadn’t been yet we had home made hash browns which were fabulous, and the eggs were double yolkers. Our friends had scrambled eggs on toast and had mounds! Highly recommend this place and the view was great.
