We were on a visit to the Christmas Market in Knaresborough... This is a lovely hote, however l.. we had a meal in the restaurant...very limited choice for a vegetarian! I felt it was quite expensive as you had to pay extra for vegetables and sides .I had Leek and potato Wellington, which was tasty, but that's all that was on the plate!! Upon leaving there had been snow overnight, and a very kind elderly gentleman helped to brush the snow off our car! Which was very much appreciated.

Beautiful hotel with lovely rooms. Quality tea, coffee & macarons in the room as well as good quality toiletries in the bathroom. Good powerful over the bath shower & a deep (but slippery) bath. Bed was comfortable (and huge!) Bar area is nicely furnished, staff are attentive without being intrusive. We didnt eat, but the menu and the food looked amazing, and the restaurant was busy. Definitely deserving of its AA 5 star rating. Only downside was there is nothing else in the village at all. Knaresborough is easily accessible by taxi at a cost of around £10.

Spent 1 night here, while travelling north. A beautiful treasure of a hotel in a lovely village ... yet not far from the M1. Receptionist was very helpful and kind. The room was spotless, with great firm mattress on bed. Powerful shower! The breakfast ... what can I say ... brilliant! Coffee perfect, and the meal was fabulous, and arrived hot! Situation ... close to Yorkshire dales and scenic beauty- spots. All in all ... this is a fabulous wee hotel. You should visit it!!

The restaurant only had 11 diners in so no atmosphere waitress very nice but inexperienced Food to much fafing about with little tasters before the meal not necessary we were in the restaurant 3 hours Wont be going back

Lovely Hotel, friendly and helpful staff. Nice room and comfortable bed. Well cooked breakfast though slightly expensive.

Mine and my partners favourite place. Planning a third visit for his birthday again and I think we will make it a tradition every year to stay over B&B and have the tasting menu. Great food and lovely staff

Really, really lovely small hotel with an excellent restaurant and fabulous staff. Dinner was exceptionally well presented and everything, including freshly baked bread was fantastic. Silvio was very good indeed and the whole place seemed very well run. Breakfast was also a delight.

I stayed in this hotel for a week and dined every day in the restaurant for convenience as I worked in a neighboring company. I am very disappointed with the lack of courtesy I have received. The head waiter is the rudest person I've ever met. (other than the leader) The girls in the dining room are very good. to come back only for the girls.

I urge you to try this place, the 25 year old chef is destined for bigger things... Michelin star quality. Rooms superb

Simple review really. The general manager was just rude, we were completely ignored, he was dismissive to my fiancée when we asked about a wedding. Arrogant and just wouldn't even apologise at the end of the night. Absolutely disgusting attitude. We are local and took family who were visiting for the coronation (12 of us in an empty restaurant) but will never be returning.

Fantastic hotel would highly recommend especially if you're a foodie!! Great menu and food is outstanding along with impeccable service!! Rooms lovely, comfortable and spotless. Great Breakfast options. All the staff we encountered were absolutely 5 star!!!

Absolutely fantastic the food and staff were exceptional the wine list is extensive the room was top notch my wife and I celebrated our wedding anniversary and we were treated like royalty we really enjoyed our one night stay and will recommend the general Tarleton to all our discerning friends We will definitely be back Excellent very comfortable with good facilities

I would have rated as 5 stars just for the food but the staff (lady called Fran and a gentleman behind the bar whose name I unfortunately forgot) made our visit even more of a pleasure, accomodating all manner of our awkwardness. Advised, entertained, took a genuine interest and was willing to draw a picture of pavé to explain to this troglodite what it was.

Absolutely stunning pub, the atmosphere is perfect to dine in. Service is outstanding followed by delicious food. I would highly recommend to wine and dine here. We have eaten with our 2 children, Christmas and date nights, it has been perfect everytime.

Make sure when you order say a gin and tonic you specify a single gin and tonic or the bar staff will automatically serve you a double gin and tonic and that's their policy and you will be asked for £11.50. I complained to reception about this and they said it was their policy to serve doubles unless the customer specifically asked for a single. This policy is not good enough unless a notice is displayed in large print in the bar area.

Food is excellent. You feel very well looked after. A great menu. A generous portions you won't come away hungry.

Absolutely loved it here! The food was sublime. The service was fantastic. Sat in front of a real log fire whilst dining, when it was -5 degrees outside. Beautiful! Looking forward to coming back again, it was that good 😍

Fantastic place, great food and atmosphere. Would of been 5* but no changing facilities for babies, just a changing trolley outside the toilets in the hallway.

Loved it here. Staff were all friendly and efficient. Food was great. Nothing was too much trouble. The manager was excellent.

Excellent in all ways but you do need a car, as it is a little isolated. Central though to easily get to Harrogate, Knaresborough, Ripon and York. Highly recommended.

One word, Exceptional! Only problem is the bar has now been set high and the amazing food (and service) will certainly take some beating elsewhere!

Late October 2022 Superb menu and excellent quality food, surpassed only by the service, from a talented, courteous and attentive staff. The food is well recommended. Rooms are well appointed, with proper baths. However, the bedroom walls are not sound insulated and you can hear everything from the next one, especially annoying, if there’s loud snoring going on overnight. Sleep quality therefore not too good.

Went for Sunday lunch and it was delicious, you must try it!

We booked in at the last minute due to issues at another hotel. It's a gorgeous place. It's in a beautiful rural setting, the rooms are luxurious and comfortable, with every need catered for. The staff were very polite, friendly and efficient. I'd love to stay here again.

We had a 3 course dinner with drinks and everything was incredibly tasty! The portion was so generous that we asked for a doggy bag for the starter which was just one of our awkward requests the staff was more than helpful to accomodate. Everything tasted like cooked by someone who loves their food a lot. Free from pretence, full of flavours and respect towards the quality ingredients. I never liked tapenade - here I was eager to take it with me! And this was just the starter....

Stayed here years ago, the night before our hot air balloon ride. Very smart then, and still now. A couple of miles out side Knaresborough. Plenty of outdoor seating.

Was treated out by my partner, we had a lovely evening, the menu had great choices, I tried new foods and really enjoyed everything. The staff were very efficient and friendly, beautiful location, very comfortable place and very welcoming. Thank you very much.

My niece & I stayed two nights at this hotel recently as part of a 10 day trip around the UK. This was by far our favorite hotel & our favorite restaurant. The service was second to none!

This is a real find. The staff were so courteous. The food excellent. Beds comfortable. The Location- amazing.

We used to visit the GT a lot a few years ago and loved it when John Topham was running it. However, a return visit last week was very disappointing. A snooty Maitre D showed us to our table as if we were lucky enough to get a table at The Savoy Grill - no such luck. Some of the junior table staff were more helpful. The food was unimpressive, small and overpriced. A seriously underwhelming experience and not to be recommended.

Ralph's restaurant, 7 course tasting menu was delicious & courses were tweeked to facilitate dairy free request. The staff were friendly, helpful & attentive. We will definitely return here. We did not stay in the rooms so we cannot comment on those.

Visited restaurant for a special treat. The tasting menu was excellent, high quality ingredients beautifully presented with an inventiveness that enhanced the flavours and flavour combinations. The staff were very friendly, helpful, attentive and professional. One of the party had dietary requirements that were accommodated without any issues and the alternative and adapted dishes were as good as it not better than the mainstream. We would definitely go back of we are in the area again.

Just to say how much we enjoyed our one night stay at the GeneralTarleton. Accomodation is excellent and of a very high standard. We had the seven course tasting menu which was excellent. Biggest mistake was not to have the wine pairing. Sommelier Donald made the evening a treat with timely suggestions. Thanks to Amelia for her hard work during service. Note one star review- please understand food here , quality not quantity.

We've been coming to the GT for years, as a lunch stop on the way to holidays in Yorkshire and Northumberland. Have always loved the food here, but we won't be coming again. Under the new owners the food is just as good but, by god, the portions are tiny; and, for what you get, unbelievably expensive. Don't eat here if you're hungry.

What a find! Stayed at The GT for a one night treat to ourselves. The GT is beautiful. The decor is tastefully done in the rooms, restaurant and bar area. We opted for the 7 course taster menu in “Ralph’s” restaurant. This is fine dining done well. Each course was joyous. From the moment of our arrival, we were made to feel very welcome. In the bar was Donald. A very passionate and experienced sommelier. He certainly knew his onions when it came to wine matching. You could tell he enjoyed working here. In the restaurant was Emilia. This lady is a gem. She couldn’t do enough for us. Attentive without going overboard. She wanted us to have the very best experience. Very polite with a gentle and appealing manner. All the staff were lovely to us. Perfection. We’ll definitely back.

Updated Feb 2022 We stayed for 2 nights last weekend having stayed several times before the pandemic. Absolutely delighted that The General Tarleton is still fabulous and have refurbished to a high standard. Staff are friendly, approachable and welcoming. Food in both Ralph's and the main restaurant was amazing and, while it was always fantastic, chef Chris McPhee has taken the standard to another level - superb! Special mention to Emily on Reception, Donald, the Sommelier, and Sylviou, front of house, who contributed to our stay to make it a special champagne weekend enjoyed with family and friends (which we had to reschedule at extremely short notice in January due to illness). Looking forward to our return and definitely will be back for our usual January birthday/post Christmas family gathering. A real treat and great location within easy reach of Harrogate and Knaresborough. Previous review 2019: Exquisite food. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There is a lovely relaxed, informal feel to it all. A great place for our family weekend away. We will definitely be back.

Went approx 3 months ago and was thinking will see what reviews are like. Seems that he portions for the price have not changed. Lovely atmosphere, staff, surroundings and food but l must admit portions are rather small went home hungry.

Stayed here yesterday evening and dined in Ralphs. The staff and service were excellent as was the 7 course tasting menu. The decor is lovely and breakfast this morning was also excellent. Would definitely recommend and am looking forward to returning to sample the a la carte menu

We have just returned from a couple of nights stay at The General Tarleton. What a gem. From the warm friendly welcome on reception to the immaculate areas of the bar, and dining rooms. The jewel in the crown is the food. Chris and his team in the kitchen have managed to create some amazing flavours that truly represent fine dining at it's best. The table service for drinks and food was also faultless with very attentive staff who really couldn't do enough for you. Simon expertly guided us through the extensive cocktail list, and Matilda was the perfect server on our table last night, to complete a very enjoyable stay. I am a Lancastrian by birth, but I have to say that this Yorkshire hospitality will take some beating!!

Very good food, need to be aware not cheap and small portions. That was lunch time. Excellent service.

Not as good as I was hoping it to be, they mixed up the order and slow on some drinks and portion size was mixed and not right, for what it wants to be I was disappointed

Nice place, pleasant staff. Fine dining so not over much to eat. We'd all have been best having a starter, meal and sweet onstead of missing the starter. Main and sweet. Cost for 5 £200 which included 4 soft drinks and 2 gins 4 half pints. My new potatoes were supposed to be crushed but were not and were just warm.

Was treated to a night for Golden wedding anniversary, ate taster menu first night wonderful food flavors to fight for, and service wonderful, room very adequate plenty room nice bathroom. Spent second night and had small plate, large plate menu and we both really enjoyed our meals different service staff but pleasant well mannered and helpful. Had afternoon drinks outside on the terrace nice furniture and large area. 👌Thank you. Both mornings great choice of breakfast meals again enjoyed by us both. Bar staff and reception very helpful.

The service was slow, food came cold, portions of veg very small,will not be visiting again.

Great food, great service, great venue.

Everything about it was fab. We stayed on an impromptu night away from home. Rocked up on our motorbike was warmly met at reception by a lovely lady. The rooms are comfortable and at last I've found a room the has a large mirror next to a plug socket and a kettle that fits under the tap. The food was lovely, even the chef was waiting on, nice to see. The staff are all very friendly and helpful but I have to give a mention to Matilda who was brilliant and looked after us fabulously. We'll definitely be returning.

Booked in for Sunday lunch with my daughter as a birthday celebration. We both agreed it was the Best roast beef we had ever tasted. Friendly and helpful staff, would recommend!

Lovely modern room. Drinks on the sunny patio followed by a great tasting menu in the restaurant. Fantastic breakfast to start the day. Very friendly staff.
