Walking into knaresbrough we came across sitting on the edge of the bridge Mother Shiptons Inn, very quaint and lovely decorated. Originally we were just going to have a drink but once the steak was served to the next table it was a done deal to ask for a menu, we waited about an hour, they were busy but well worth the wait. Sirloin steak and tempura Prawns.... Mmmm

Food was awful. Got chicken dumpling in vegetable broth as a starter and it tasted like dirty water and the dumplings weren’t dumplings they were balls of processed food which tasted like cat food. There was also a customer smoking inside the doorway. Got a steak sandwich and the best part was the gravy.

They take a long time to serve. We had made reservations to eat but there were many free tables. From when we ordered until the food arrived, it is worth knowing that it takes a long time. Then the food, treatment and very correct prices. The atmosphere of the place is worth it, especially if you go out to the terrace with the great views. They have both inside and outside tables with views of the river and the viaduct. It is advisable to reserve although there are usually no problems. We ordered roast beef, pork beef, desserts like the coconut one (good), the cheesecake (so-so), the brownie (pretty good), and the toffee the best. The roasts come accompanied by yorkshire pudding, vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, cabbage... Another dish with gratin cauliflower, and separate sauces that... Without further ado. Of course, they have good wines.

We visited on a Saturday afternoon and had to wait 45 minutes for our food, which was too long!! We ordered lasagna and roast beef. When we asked a staff member about the roast of the day, she didn’t know and had to ask someone else. I assumed that would be a basic question. The roast beef was overcooked and quite disappointing. However, the lasagna and garlic bread were quite good.

We visited Friday 5th July 2024 at approx 5pm on entering the pub we found it a lovely place with 8 people eating at 4 tables and one small table near the bar was reserved and a family of 4 sat on the right of the main door looking at the menu, after ordering our drink we sat in the left hand room watching the football on TV... We checked the menu and decided we would order 2 x Fish & Chips. My wife to the Bar to be told there was a 40 minute wait on food so she said that's fine as we are not in a rush and would be having a few drinks. The girl behind the bar then said we are not taking any orders because we have tables booked in and we like to keep it to 15 minutes.. This I found astonishing as there were no other people in the pub at all. We drank our drinks n left and spent our money opposite in the Half Moon..

Visited Mother Shipton Inn , was really looking forward to it, but sadly my lunch was a bit disappointing. I had a special from the board, meatballs in tomato sauce. It was very dry hardly any sauce, the two other people with me had fish and chips, which was delicious, and a roast dinner which also was good. I seemed to be unlucky. Afterwards we finished it off with Eaton Mess, and sticky toffee pudding which was delicious. We loved the Inn itself and were greeted warmly by the staff.

This is a lovely pub, staffed by top notch people. The beer and the food are great. Plenty of choice, always including great veggie and vegan options. Friendly, comfortable and very reasonable, price wise. There's always been parking on site when we have been, even at busy times. Nice views from the beer garden, which you wouldn't guess from the outside. Lovely old building which has been tastefully decorated. I've been here 4 or 5 times — it's been spot on every time. They look after their staff, which comes across in the way they look after you. The menu is all home cooked, and they have let us customise things based on dietary preferences. They retained all their staff over lockdown, which I think is a credit to them. Please do give them a go, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

We dropped into this lovely pub after a visit to Mother Shiptons Cave and we are so pleased we did. 2 adults, 2 kids (10 & 12) and a dog. Do not be misled by what seems to be a 'normal' pub menu. The food is gorgeous. Our girls decided on the fish finger sandwich and chips, my husband had fish of the day (haddock) and I had the chicken with parmesan chips and veg. There was silence as we ate other than appreciative noises. The girls' "fish fingers" were home made fish goujons, battered, and in a toasted, buttered brioche bun, with a bucket of chunky, home-made chips. They absolutely loved every mouthful. Hubby said the same for his fish and OMG my chicken was fab. Served with a crispy skin, crispy ham and the most amazing bacon jam, I just didn't want it to end. We added on desert - ice cream for the girls, cheesecake of the day (Biscoff) for hubby and warm almond and raspberry tart for me. Again, just delicious. The gentleman (I'm presuming owner/manager) and all the girls behind the bar were also very friendly and welcoming. The building has lots of cosy seating areas and a gorgeous beer garden overlooking the water. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Stumbled on this little eatery while visiting Knaresborough on a Sunday lunch time. We went in to get maybe a sandwich and thought it wasn’t going to be great to be honest but ended up having a cooked lunch and it was so good! The place was busy and you could tell they were locals as they were chatting across to each other. We looked at the menu and decided to have have a cooked meal. I ordered pie chips and peas and my husband a burger with chips salad and coleslaw and a pot of tea. You could actually get a 3 course Sunday lunch for £14.50! When mine came there were no peas but another bowl soon arrived full of fresh vegetables and a big jug of gravy. Food was really good the staff were lovely. The lady said that as she had been cooking Sunday lunches she gave me some of the veg. We were thoroughly impressed and wouldn’t hesitate to visit again. Great food and great value for money! Definitely worth trying!
