The newly built Gatelodge cafe sits just inside the main entrance of Ards Hospital, on the left. a brand new enterprise staffed predominantly by people with learning disability. I had an hour to kill between appointments and thought I'd go there for a light lunch. It was my first visit and I was looking forward to seeing what was on offer. On reaching the main entrance, as a wheelchair user I was disappointed that the door didn't open by means of a button press outside, I had to lean forward to attempt to push it open but it was not possible. Luckily there was a young lady at the front desk who rushed forward to help. So in I went to the seating area, very bright and airy, seating for perhaps 30 to 40. A little cramped possibly. I chose a seat opposite the food and kitchen and I glanced through the concise menu, enough on it to choose from. I chose a beef and onion sausage roll with salad and coleslaw, and a cup of tea. The server took my order, he checked with me a couple of times as he wrote it down, then took my order to the kitchen. That part was being run by a lady who was managing the orders in and food out. In a short time, my tea arrived followed closely by a small plate with one sausage roll, no salad and coleslaw. I attracted the attention of the manager and explained the problem. The plate was removed and one minute later a large plate with a sausage roll with salad and coleslaw. was set in front of me with an apology, fair enough considering the circumstances. The sausage roll was huge, hot and delicious and the salad and coleslaw was crunchy and fresh. Whilst I was eating, a young server politely checked if all was fine, which it was. I've got to say that the whole experience was top class, I thoroughly enjoyed it. On exiting the café the young lady who let me in was there again to open the door. We agreed that an automatic door should be installed, I really can't believe that it wasn't put in when renovating the building, given the fact that it's in the grounds of a hospital! It's not possible for a wheelchair user to enter or exit without someone to open the door.

Called in for coffee before hospital appointment. Cappuccinos were on the very cool side. We had a fifteen and a piece of ginger cake. The ginger cake was dry and hard. The cakes etc did not look fresh in general. Would not recommend. Staff and ambience were nice though. Won't be back or recommend.

Purchased two sausage rolls to take home, having seen a glowing description in the local press. Heated them up at home for lunch. They had an inordinate quantity of something similar to spam inside, which the local avian population enjoyed! The pastry was not wonderful either. I liked the baked beans which I provided as an accompaniment. To cap it all, they cost about twice what I would expect to pay.

What a lovely idea this restaurant is, its manned by people with disabilities (not exploited) its clean tidy and food is nice. We ordered a breakfast bar, porridge and I had the 3piece omelette, food was well prepared. A little wait but I expected that. Its a bright cheerful place and seeing the people working here with no restraints is brilliant there should be more of these places

Called in with a friend for lunch etc before visiting a friend who had operation. Given a seat that we wanted. Omelettes are great along with coffee. Service very good. It is good they employ the disabled as Daisy's cafe before it closed. Drawback will be parking as they are putting in paid parking with barriers which means only people going to the hospital will use it. Keep up the good work.

The staff here are really friendly which is something I look for when I go into a coffee shop, staff who chat to you and seem happy to do it. Their coffee and tray bakes are lovely and they make some fantastic lunches I had a really lovely omelette a while ago which I would recommend. The unfortunate thing is that it is hard to get parked at but my idea if you have to park a bit further away then you can burn the calories you will eat by walking to them especially when they tempt you with muffins.

A brilliant venue to visit at any time of the day ...I can't speak highly enough off the Gatelodge in Newtownards and it's staff as they are always friendly and welcoming. As a training position for my son I'm very happy with his position and I'd recommend any parent to look into here as a place after transition and leaving school.

Visited this cafe on lots of occasions and enjoy the relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Nice soup of the day and wheaten bread. Really convenient for parking as it's a short distance away from the town centre.

We used to have lunch at Daisies Cafe in the hospital complex, but before it closed the food was of a poor quality and people stayed away.

Was a hot day and called in to buy some water to take away. For 2 average bottles of still water (500mls) it was £3.40. Was surprised and this has put me off buying anything else. Had to wait a while to pay. Had called in one day some months ago for scone and coffee nothing special. On a positive note the decor is nice and atmosphere good but better less expensive cafes in the town.

I love it in here but would like to see a bigger variety on the menu and more sweet treats. There is a mixture of tables and chairs or sofas and relaxing chairs with coffee tables.

Went into gatelodge for coffee and scones as daisy's has been closed for sometime. It is handy if you have a hospital appointment. The old gatelodge has been completely renovated. The place was spotless and had a very good ambience. Prices very reasonable. You can have lunch up to 2.30 and closes at 4.00pm. The staff are excellent.

Our new favorite place! I had the Ulster Fry one morning and the Hawaiian toastie the next day for lunch. My boys had the ultimate pancake stack, which they loved. The food was fresh and delicious and the atmosphere is so cool. Will definitely be back.

Castle Espie is a bit of an anticlimax. Place is very rundown and had not many birds to see. One elderly staff member was quite rude not so friendly at all. More interested in taking our money than helping negotiate the map. Onsite cafe is a rip-off! No wholemeal sandwiches. Tuna sandwich was £4.70! Same sandwich up road was £2.65! Staff moral very low! Avoid both places.

They have a coffee machine that sounds like a road drill. For conversation you need to sit outside, if you can find a seat!
