The Gatekeeper in Cardiff

I wouldn't recommend eating at the gatekeeper especially chicken it gave me food poisoning. The staff were sympathetic but it shouldnt of happened the food should be cooked throughly and it is now being investigated.

Lovely pub but found it a little expensive

Good place to eat delicious, cheap and fast. Diverse atmosphere, there are usually birthday celebrations and bachelorette parties so it is not a quiet place but it is fun. We went late and were able to order freely from the menu, we chose a fish and chips and a pasta alfredo. Good beer deals

Wetherspoons #116 The Gatekeeper is a large, two story pub, with a mezzanine level, situated on the northern side of the City Centre, nearly opposite the Principality Stadium. It is decorated in a more modern style, and felt more like a department store than a pub, with a glass lift between floors - which appeared to be in frequent use. There is also a second bar on the upper level. Rather busy when I visited and it took a few minutes to get served at the bar. Ordered a pint of Cwrw Gorslas beer, which was in good condition. Had breakfast at the Prince of Wales branch around an hour earlier, so didn't experience food on this occasion.

Good pub, far too many posh and socially unaware students though. Montana and the rest of the team deserve a pay rise.

Usually love Wetherspoons. I know the quality can be a bit hot and miss but the steak was atrocious. The pub itself is good, nice atmosphere.

If I could rate lower I would. I visited you at the end of February. The pub was very quiet. However it took 40 minutes for drinks to come because the staff were more concerned about serving the bar. If you want customers to use the app as well you should be able to have the same level of service as going to the bar which was not the case. The food, which we had was also of poor quality.

The service here is friendly and efficient. Food is well presented (we had a breakfast and a steak dinner) and reasonable quality. I’d give it a better rating if it arrived at a higher temperature. I suggest using covers to bring the food out. It’s an easy fix. Cardiff isn’t that warm …

Good spacious area. However my phone has lost a lot of charge. The only place to charge was on high pedestal seats which were too high for my short stature.

Food cold yet over cooked 🤔 complained but given same food rewarmed in microwave

I order 3 medium rare stakes that came blue. The peppercorn sauce was ice cold , the chip's were lukewarm and to top it off when the plates were cleared we wasn't asked if the meal was ok. I will not be eating in here again very disappointed with the meals.

Huge 'Spoons, with bars over a number of floors. Great value, of course, especially on the Curry Club day. Yum. Good selection of beers and excellent WiFi etc. Loos a fair old hike so don't leave it until the last minute. Haven't been here for a few years but still as good as ever.

There were 6 of us, I ordered the steak and jacket pot, came to us and the jacket pot was freezing ! I told the girl and she took it back, about 15 after my food arrived again my jacket pot was ok but they had re cooked my steak and it was like a piece of rubber, I wouldn't even feed this to a dog.. absolutely awful

Used to be a good place to eat and drink the meals were good the drinks were cheap, the last few times I've been there the portions are smaller the prices have gone up and it's not that good value anymore, also the toilets were blocked and overflowing 🙄

Checked trying haggis off my bucket list, and now I'm debating whether to add "master bagpipe" as the next item.

I've used this pub for quite a few years now but recently the food has gone downhill! Last time I ordered a curry with garlic bread...the rice was solid, as if it had been out on the hotplate all day...except for the rice left under the curry bowl & the nann bread was supposed to have garlic on...I tasted no garlic, probably because it was more like a crisp bread! Overall, had I not been so hungry, I'd have returned it all...except that the staff didn't seem to give a shîte whether I enjoyed it or not...I was going to say something to whoever collected my plate but I took my eye off the ball for 30 seconds & it was gone...he didn't even ask if I was finished, let alone if I enjoyed it!! I will probably go to this pub again as the price of the beer is good but I won't be eating any more of their food & I'll just have to accept that the bar staff now, don't really give a hoot whether you enjoy the experience or not.

A very nice place with very reasonable prices and great variety of food and drinks. Food taste was average, we ordered a steak and a burger. The cocktails were very tasty. Overall a pleasant experience. They, however, don't play premier league games on tv.

Un cooked 🍳. Cold beans 🫘 and like the food came out the fridge.i just should of had a glass of coke for breakfast no black pubbing on large breakfast.

For us it was a good place to have breakfast.

Ordered turkey dinner, the veg was still frozen. Following morning Ordered breakfast which was cold. Waited for a replacement which took too long, so asked for money back

Nice staff and reasonable prices for food and drinks.

All round winner still can't get over how good the staff are in this place. You place an order and it's on your table in minutes and for the size of the place and the amount of people they catter for its very impressive 👏

Bang outside the principality stadium , clean , according to the wife , ladies toilets have the facility where u can take your drink with you in the cubicle what a good idea

Great pub seconds from Cardiff Castle and the Holiday Inn

Ordered on the app and then was told it would be refunded because they didn't have what was ordered I was asked to order again and pay to the bar. Paid twice for the same meal because the refund never came, staff don't know what their doing and customer service is useless.

Well on match day in Cardiff the place was very busy, but bar staff were very good and kept the queues to a minimum.

We had ham & cheese pannini Which was very nice, not on your list of meals, I had a pint of Abbot Ale my partner had a glass of wine. We have not been in there for a while due to the Covid Virus, we had a lovely time

Been here a few times for drinks but never for food, big spacious area with seating both on the ground floor and upstairs. Enjoyed the couple of times I've been here, although when very busy it can take a bit of time to be served but you get that anywhere that's busy, luckily I've not had that issue here too much. Opposite the stadium as well so makes a great place for pre-drinks if attending a match etc.

Not been here for ages but the place hasn't changed and is still great value for money and ideal for a quick drink and cheap food. I will call in again next time I am in town.

Nice place with good combinations for lunch or a quick meal. Very big pub, with 3 floors and a lot of tables. Menus and tables are not the cleanest, as everything is sticky with dried beer. It could be cleaned more often.

Called in and ordered a pint,the staff both very friendly,and one member of staff said go and sit down a i will bring it over,not had that before here,😀

You always use good food but we ordered a traditional breakfast never had a problem with your food until today food served on cold plates breakfast was cold baked beans was so cold they felt that they were just spooned straight out of the tin the toast cold the only warm food on our plates was the sausage we are both very disappointed with our breakfast never had to complain before as we’ve always had good meals

It's a wetherspoons, we all know what to expect.

Old and weird crowd. Went there with 2 other friends and my puppy, even though the beer garden is before you enter the pub was first told it was okay for my puppy to be inside the barriers that made the beer garden to 15 minutes later she couldn’t?!?! But I was allowed to stay in as long she was outside the barriers. Really weird.

Had a lovely evening at Ty Madeira. Missed the 9.30 bus so walked back to the Gatekeeper to wait for the next bus. A customer held open the door and we walked in. We were then shouted at by a door man accusing us of barging the door open. He shouted at us to get out and was very intimidating. A very enjoyable evening spoilt by a very rude door man/ bouncer !!

I love a Weatherspoons, but the service and food in the Gatekeeper was just awful. Staff are miserable and get the orders wrong and the chips were hard and not cooked.

Not much to say apart from it is your typical Wetherspoons. Good value for money! We tended to have breakfast here instead of the hotel as it was cheaper and just around the corner. Staff seemed nice and there was plenty of room.

A better than most spoons, nothing fancy, a couple of guest ales, that are tip top, split level pub, worst a visit.

It's a wetherspoons. Easy, cheap food and drink. Was there a few hours playing Magic the Gathering and all the staff were lovely

New Carpet! Usual Wetherspoons fare. Beer (real ale) is usually kept better at the moment. Problem is that depends very much on the diligence of the managers. This has not been so in the past and unfortunately there's no guarantee in the future. That's why some local breweries sneak in and make sure themselves. Currently on my list for food but unless I see something I fancy in the available beer I generally go with the wine as it's more difficult to screw up!

This pub is fantastic. Granted I went post rugby. And wow. As a cornishman (not english ;) ) this pub was was in full voice. With members of local quiors there giving lots of renditions of Welsh songs. We ordered food while it was rammed, and it came so fast we coukdbt believe it. Table service was... slower but still, could not complain at all! Bar higher prices, but still cheaper than pubs and clubs around it. Will be back!
