Only had 45 minutes before show at Sadlers wells and they delivered really quickly for us, which was much appreciated. The food was excellent. I had forgotten that this is a vegetarian menu until half way through what I already thought was the best meal I had sampled all year, and as a keen meat eater that speaks volumes. Fresh, incredibly tasty, beautifully presented and full of texture. I'll be going back when we have more than 45 minutes to spare, soon.

I was really looking forward to eating here but l don’t think ld go back in a hurry. The food is very presentable but we felt that the flavours were not in harmony. We had two waiters , one that didn’t know the menu and the other who seemed to run front of house was not very attentive- didn’t ask us about our meal. Atmosphere was lacklustre with two guys who must be part of the business on laptops at a table during dinner service. Weird and mood killing. The restaurant was fairly busy for midweek but we seemed to be the youngest people there- we are mid forties! Pricing didn’t feel like it matched the experience. I get the feeling this place wa since very good but maybe been taken over and has lost something. Just a guess.

The food here is delicious, there’s no question. It’s well presented and tasted great. The service was slow though; not rude but not dynamic, even though the restaurant was not busy. We had planned to have three courses and a coffee before the theatre - just about managed two. Plus we had to ask for the bill and for a drinks order. There wasn’t even the usual “is everything ok for you” check. It’s tricky to question the service charge nowadays - it’s always added on automatically - in this case, it didn’t feel worth the amount. But I really liked the food.

The Gate is by far the best vegetarian restaurant we’ve eaten in including some Michelin starred venues. No it doesn’t have the slick presentation required for a star but what it does deliver is superbly prepared, cooked and presented food. Was taken here on a date. Food was nice, desert was amazing. Waitress was super lovely and attentive the whole night. We went on Sunday, 30 mins before closing we were the only ones left. We'd already settled the bill noticing the staff wanted to leave, before we could get up a staff member at the bar shouted "come on its time to go". I get that everyone wanted to leave, but surely for many reasons shouting at customers is a no go, especially when it was still 30 mins till closing. On my way out in passing the person apologised. Make of it what you will! If you fear getting shouted after a nice meal, maybe avoid

This place was really disappointing . Food has gone downhill. I was a regular but never again after my experience. The disabled toilet was out of use but the stroppy maitre d said I could use it as I cant go down stairs. I asked was it out of order or not. She said it had a slow flush and was so rude. I declined until I was desperate. My guests asked another waitress if it was out of order or not she said it was ok to use. When I used the toilet it was filthy and disgusting with feaces around the bowl. I was shocked they would send a disabled or any abled person to this public space. It completely put me off my food and made me think the whole place was unhygienic. I asked the mart d how could a restaurant send someone to that toilet especially when still eating. This is a health hazard and treating disabled customers who cannot use the stairs unfavourably. It is discrimination. I will never go to the Gate again and advise people not too

The food was delicious ! BUT THE SERVICE WAS REALLY DISAPPOINTING which was a real shame ! One of the people in the party has a number of allergies . I rang in the morning to give them a heads up … but there seemed to be no way to accommodate. The oil in the fryer was for everything so couldn’t have gluten free chips or any other fried product . They were unable to make anything seperate or offer anything at all ! They made the person with the allergies feel like a massive problem and inconvenience which spoilt it for us all. The service was at best careless and at worst rude.

We used to go to the Gate in West London back in the 90’s. It was a real pleasure to visit the Islington branch for an early dinner. We had the red curry and tofu and the wild mushroom in chipotle sauce, both well flavoured and presented beautifully - my partner says “not enough tofu” though. Cheesecake and tiramisu were both excellent, and the red wine I had (cheapest on the menu) was really good. None of the slowness others have talked about, but it was a really early reservation for six o clock. Looking forward to having the excuse to go back.

Fantastic food at The Gate. Majority of the menu is plant-based (not sure they have anything that isn't). Ordered the Seitan and Cauliflower Shawarma with Kimchi Stuffed Sushi Balls. Both were excellent and flavoursome. Prosecco was a lovely addition. Blackberry cheesecake was sweet and smooth too. It's London so it's on the pricier side. Highly recommended for plant-based options in Islington and particularly for pre-ballet dining. Sadler's Wells is just down the road.

I wanted to use a gift card. I put the voucher number in the booking, and told the staff of the voucher upon arrival (as stated to do in the t&c written on the voucher). I read the t&c ahead of time, and there was NO mention of expiration date or how long it was good for. I had received it as a gift 2 years ago, so it was a little old but not ancient. When I tried to use the voucher, I was told it was not good anymore and had expired. It was for £50. It was not a massive meal. The staff became increasingly rude, telling me that I should’ve known this and the person who bought me the voucher as a gift should’ve told me and therefore it was my fault. They admitted that the t&c didn’t mention that and it could be written better, but that it wasn’t their fault. At one point they showed me that when you purchase the gift card it shows that it expires in 12 months. Yet it’s a GIFT card, the person who is going to use it isn’t the person purchasing it. It took about 5 conversations between the staff and the manager for the manager to finally agree to honour it, while my partner and I sat for 30 minutes waiting. Honestly one of the most humiliating dining experiences. I will never eat here again. The food was fine, but nothing special. There are better vegetarian/vegan restaurants in London.

Unfortunately on a recent visit, the service we received in no way did justice to the food we enjoyed. The restaurant was (as it often is on days on which there are performances at Sadlers Wells) busy with an early dinner service. That said, having booked in advance, we were surprised at quite how slowly we were greeted (which might be overstating what we actually experienced which was nothing beyond bare acknowledgment) and the disconcertingly long wait before our starters materialised. The team seemed woefully under staffed and poorly managed and it proved difficult to get assistance for extra drinks / additional dishes. On more than one occasion, we simply gave up. Our meal became very mechanical and the poor service was disappointing and, at points, frustrating. Unfortunately, whilst strategising how to attract the attention of the seemingly disinterested staff, we were unable to enjoy one another's company or the food as much as we might otherwise had the restaurant's pre theatre service been running more smoothly. The bathrooms (which were not all operational) were uninviting and in need of staff intervention at the time of our visit.

We have been to The Gate a few times. Last time we were in London we went to the branch in St. John's Wood because the Islington restaurant was having some sort of refurbishment not that you could notice anything different, I have to say. The food has usually been good but this time we were disappointed as we felt it was overall mediocre and not value for money and like it was part of a "chain". The service was fine but the staff just didn't seem very interested and clearly had no pride in their work. Our table was where we could see all the plates etc ready for being washed and then at one point a bin was dragged through the restaurant full of empty bottles and then taken out through the main door. Poor. We don't live in London and The Gate is nowhere near as good as an award winning vegan restaurant we go to in Nottingham. I'm afraid that The Gate is going to have to try harder particularly in the current climate. We won't be going back.

My daughter and I had a very poor experience at The Gate yesterday. The food was good but the treatment by the young female maitre d’ was not at all good. She asked us to vacate our table after only an hour from our reservation time - not in a nice way but very brusque! We were still finishing our wine despite having settled the bill - we may still have requested more drinks as far as she knew. She admitted she had made a mistake when I approached her upon leaving but did not come to the table to apologise before then even though our waitress ( who was lovely) had asked her about it and had come back to the table ( the waitress not the maitre d’) to say we were fine to stay. Needless to say we won’t be returning.

The food at The Gate is excellent - inventive, interesting, delicious. And it's wonderful knowing I can order anything on the menu. But I really want to thank the staff. I had lunch with my mum. When we arrived, despite the restaurant being very busy, we were seated almost immediately. We were booked to see Edward Scissorhands at Sadler's Wells so only had limited amount of time which had been cut very short by the train cancellation. Would like to add that all the other staff, especially our server, Fatima, were brilliant. Advised food intolerances during booking process and received great email the day before: “I have come across your booking notes and wated to share our menu with you. We have a few gluten free options for all courses and we also have a three-course set menu @£38pp our guests can also opt for. The Set Festive Menu does not offer GF options for starters, however we welcome our guests to choose this course from out A La Carte.” However, on ordering, the server fed back that I would not be able to choose a starter from the A La Carte and could not have the Festive Menu. She offered to bring the person who had said this to the table to explain. Oh wow - bad move. This turned out to be the defensive and accusatory owner-manager: This restaurant does not cater for “people like you” who “demand” things outside of what is available and “expect to get them”; and that “the system will not let him order” a starter from the A La Carte for the Festive Menu. “If I wanted to have the Festive Menu I would have to have the Aubergine starter from it”. Blah blah blah blah blah . . . The Aubergine starter was not marked GF on either menu (as per the email). I pointed out that his accusation about people like me making demands applied to him: he was “demanding” I eat the 1 item he selected for me from the menu and it was something I could not eat. Additionally, a quick estimate showed the order would come in a few pounds below the £38 for the Festive Menu. I didn’t bring up the email, because my patient companion asked if they could give their order, which included the aubergine dish. Owner-Manager suddenly realised that this might work with the technology and clearly felt a need to share every step of his thinking process about swapping our starters with us. With much huffing and puffing he messed around with the order terminal for several minutes right at the table. After 2 failed attempts, he eventually muttered he’d “have to just write the order by hand” and stalked off. When the order arrived, we received a cup of salad instead of the broccoli side that had been ordered. When the broccoli arrived, it was steamed not sautéed as described in the menu so it was sent back. If having diners in your restaurant is an inconvenience for your technology, business and self, then maybe you’re in the wrong business? We didn’t need to know all the drama and detail about whether our starters can be swapped so that it can be input in the technology and we didn’t need to be party to all the huffing and puffing too. Finally the food: excellent margarita and Oyster mushroom starter. Highly recommend these. The Wild Mushroom rotolo mains was not as great as the starter but still very good. The festive snow bombe dessert presented beautifully, with the bombe melting under a pour of hot chocolate sauce, but tasted average. My take is that the pear filling was bland and didn’t complement the chocolaTe

I really wanted to love this restaurant, as I rarely have a treat where I am spoiled for choice to choose anything off a menu. This was a birthday dinner from my hubby, and let me tell you, the food was sensational. Everything was perfect, tasty, and simply delicious. Even my hubby, whom is a meat eater loved the grub, and couldn't fault anything. Portions were spot on as well not too much, not too small. Perfect. Unfortunately we seemed to be sitting at the invisible table. And I mean it in the nicest way, as staff just didn't seem to notice we existed after serving us the starters. And I am not kidding, after finishing the starter, we had our empty plates sitting in front of us for over half an hour, when we decided jut simply take matters into our own hands, and put them on the empty table next to us, hoping this will be noticed. No such luck. Another 15 minutes and when the main came out, dirty plates were still there. :-D So same situation seemed to be after mains, so I just took matters into my on hands after an other 20 mins of waiting, and started waiving around hoping I will be noticed. This tactic worked, so I just kept up with it until we finished. Can not say staff was insufficient, just that they might need a bit more training, and to be more attentive. We usually leave tips even if there is a service charge as we know how hard people work in the service industry, but today I almost felt like they do not deserve the service charge either. We had 3 courses, and as the restaurant has a 2 hour window policy they did hurry up by the end, but we literally had our dessert 15 mins before the 2 hours were up, because of the slow service. Oh, and we did not get any cutlery to eat it with. Further hand waving was required after we waited for 10 mins for someone to clue in and get us some forks. :-D Real shame, as I did love the food.

Went here with a friend, had heard good things and wanted to try the food. We're both vegan. We arrived and were quickly seated, saw that you have to order via QR code. Not sure why this is still necessary post-covid, it's impersonal and is giving pub vibes. Plus adding on 12.5% service charge is really cheeky, what am I paying that 12.5% for if you're not even taking my order?! Within about 3 minutes from ordering our starters arrived. Gives the impression that everything is pre-prepared and heated up. Not what I'd expect for the price. Drinks came out, then honestly 5-10 mins later our mains were there. Now, I'd rather the food came too quickly than too slowly, but there is a balance. We were in and out within about 30-35 mins, felt more like a fast food restaurant than a fine dining experience. I had the artichoke tart and the polenta cake with mushrooms, it was good. My friend had the oyster mushroom starter and the cordon bleu. The cordon bleu was disappointing, something you could make at home, and tasted like the vegetarian butcher fake chicken schnitzel. Definitely not worth 19 quid (+service charge!) Anyway, it was an average dining experience hence the 3 stars. I would go again, but not rushing back.

I loved it. What a wonderful place. Everything in the place - menus - is vegan. Mostly gluten free, but anything that is, is well published on the e menu and staff can advise. Since nuts are used for some dishes, it's not nut free but again well marked and the staff knows. Anything that looks like meat or fish isn't - it's 100% vegan. But it looks real and tastes like the real deal. Best of all, or maybe next best from the quality and content is the price. Most reasonable for what you get anywhere these days, and the portions are huge. The staff was wonderful and friendly, and the building is an oldie but lovingly and tastefully restored. This place would be special anyway, but it's vegan menu make it unique. Highly recommended.

I can only comment as to my experience and that was a most enjoyable meal. We were going to Sadler’s Wells, so really convenient and meant we were eating early. The staff were friendly, informative and seemed to be enjoying their work. The food was very good and despite not being vegan, I had no complaints at all. The beetroot terrine was excellent, followed by a lentil, mushroom and potato moussaka. My wife had the Mexican Plate, which had a wide range of flavours and was just the right size. A couple of G&T’s and a glass of wine, plus coffees and the whole bill was £92 incl service, which I thought was very reasonable! So a thumbs up from us.

The staff were disinterested in serving us which is a downside of having the service added to the bill because they know that they will get a tip anyway. Only one of five of our dishes was OK. Seriously burnt toast, rock hard eggs. I would give this restaurant a miss.

They obviously misspelled goat when naming this resteraunt. Best vegetarian resteraunt I've been too. Cordon bleu is next level, James corden would be proud. Amazing food with super efficient waiters.

I am giving this restaurant 3 stars because of a couple of really lovely waiting staff. However, that's where the good stuff ends sadly. I had not visited this restaurant for about 4 years and was very disappointed with the food and management. The starter of courgette flower was almost cold inside - but I was hungry so didn't mind to much. I then ordered the "steak" which was burnt around the edges and super chewy. The steak was extremely salty while the rest of the dish (sauce, broccoli, etc) was not seasoned enough. I didn't finish it and when I told the waitress why, she informed her manager who more or less shrugged. Perhaps she should have been inspecting the dishes before they left the pass? Then we asked for the bill and another member of staff brought it to us - she was extremely unfriendly and put it on the table without even acknowledging us - I have no idea why she works in this industry when she quite obviously hates it. This was a sad day, as we used to rave about the vegetarian fine dining experience there. Now it's over-priced pre-show pub grub at best. Our bill was over a hundred pounds too. The tables have been increased, so you can forget about an intimate dinner, its more like a cafe. We will not be returning!

This place has really gone to the dogs. They have increased the number of tables, so it is no longer a fine dining experience. Due to the amount of people they cram in, its noisy and impersonal. The food is pub grub at best. I am not sure why so many people think the food is wonderful - you really need to eat out more! It's under seasoned or over seasoned, rushed, oily and unimaginative. Don't waste your money. We won't be returning!

Really great food (even if you are not a veggie you will enjoy this) but the service is shocking! They were busy, but surely given the location to the theatre they expect to be and have sufficient staff etc. Worst was it was clear when we said that we are not including a service charge they actually just don't care. I would give it 4 possibly 5 stars if it werent for the service

My first visit to this restaurant after it was highly recommended. A perfect place for lunch before the matinee at Sadler Wells. The food was delicious, service was first class and a very reasonable bill at the end. Will definitely be coming here again

took a friend of mine here for her birthday dinner and we had a great time. service is a bit slow at times but understandable as it gets a bit busy. i had the mushroom risotto which was absolutely lovely. miso glazed aubergines are a bit lacking in flavour, i’ve had better. my friend’s thai salad was a bit lacklustre but many other interesting options on the menu.

Food was lovely and the flavours were full and interesting. They’ve got a few other restaurants in London too and I highly recommend. Awesome to see a fully plant based menu now 👏 Stand out dishes were the courgette flower, oyster mushroom and moussaka

It's so refreshing to visit a plant-based restaurant that isn't heavily dependant on meat-replicas or soya/tofu dishes, with choices that actually show how much delicious fun you can have with vegetables! Was the perfect place to go for my birthday and they even decorated my dessert cake with a Happy Birthday message and candle. I'm already planning when to go again next.

Having looked forward to going for such a long time, I was so disappointed food overpriced, service not great, and food average at best, vegetarian has moved forward from this and cannot rely on fancy Plating and sauces. Not busy at all and all placed in one corner, drinks ordered and came with food in the end, no children's menu available I was told and could only do nuggets and chips, tasty but not what my daughter particularly likes. Overall very disappointing and would not recommend as a lot better choices available,

Really great lunch here in this lovely dining room. Tasty vegetarian menu that is a cut above most London restaurants. They have an extensive bar too. We’ll try dinner here next time : yes we are definitely coming back.

Dropped on this amazing restaurant as 1 meat eater and 1 veggie couple. Didn't realise it was a vegan restaurant. The food is absolutely incredible and that is coming from a meat eater!

Honestly quite bland and under seasoned dry food. The rosemary fries contain 0 rosemary. The Wellington was anemic, again zero seasoning. The burger was a dehydrated beetroot, I've never experienced a dry beetroot in all my life, quite the achievement. Nobody asked how the food was after being served. They should put salt and pepper on the table so diners can experience some kind of taste. £80 for two with wine.

This place is amazing!!! I came here for a date with my husband and it was a really lovely place with fabulous food, drink and friendly staff. The food was to die for and the portions were perfect! Can’t wait to come back! Thank you! X

The food is amazing, I went to the gate Restaurant for the first time in 1999 and had the Aubergine Schnitzel , but they have improved it since. It reminded me of my mums cooking, but a vegan version of it! The lemon sauce was so tasty and rich. My wife had the katsu curry (incredibly subtle taste) and I had the beetroot and mascarpone mousse, with a slightly bitter/sweet taste). The quantity of food was just right and the price reasonable given the top notch quality. The wine was not of a great quality though given the £26 price tag.

A decent meal of goods flavours but with slow service, despite the empty dining room, it was a little disappointing. Not necessarily going to set the world alight, but a reliable option, especially after a night at Sadlers Wells.

Incredible food. I was missing MasterChef but friends agreed we had MasterChef the professionals live. The truffle sauce I couldn't get enough of! It was my friend's birthday and they not only put a candle in her cheesecake as requested but wrote Happy Birthday in chocolate sauce as well. It made it so special.

I love the atmosphere in The Gate - always friendly, unrushed and with great food. I had the onion tart for starter and Wellington with Mashed potato and broccoli for main - all absolutely gorgeous. It is so lovely being a vegan to know that all the food is something that I can eat as I am confident that the chefs and staff know what being vegan is about. Fabulous!

One of the best places I have been for vegan food in London. The starters and mains were delicious, the desserts weren’t quite as good.

A great menu. Very impressed with the food. We enjoyed ourselves although it was difficult at times to hear what we were saying as the restaurant was very busy and noisey.

Completely dead despite it being a busy night out. Menu prices are only visible if you hold the page at a certain angle that catches the light - maybe that's why it was an £80+ meal for one?? Food completely underwhelming- starter calamari (three rings) rubbery and a dip that was way too glutinous....for nine quid!! Main course steak served on a cold plate - tasteless and uninspiring. Blue cheese sauce like nothing blue cheese related that I've seen before...I think it's out of an Aldi squeezy bottle of 'blue cheese sauce'. Also really glutinous and unappetising. Wine was mediocre, cocktail was meh, service good but felt like they wanted me out asap. No surprise it was so devoid of customers.

There was a problem with the card machine. After trying for 5 mins still not fixed. Manageress came to tills and started shouting at staff and then at me(!). I left and ate elsewhere and will never return.

Ordered for delivery a best of both worlds meal deal and a pastrami steak box. Turned up stond cold and the pastrami in the combo was miniscule compared with the other. Considering it cost 24 pounds for a single burger chips and a tiny little piece of pastrami I feel ripped off and disappointed. Wont be returning.
