Pleasantly surprised, decided to pop in for lunch with a friend Fresh home cooked food Lunch menu 2 courses for £10 or 3 courses £12 I opted for ham egg and chips, wow those chips were amazing. The egg was perfect, gammon ham was lovely. Garnished with side salad and garden peas Friendly staff, quick service and pleasant atmosphere Will be returning

I have just returned home from my boys taking me out for a Mothers Day meal. Straight away the atmosphere was friendly with lovely decorations for the day to make you feel special. The roast and pudding was gorgeous. Lovely creamy mash, roast potatoes to die for and the meat was perfect. The staff were very attentive asking for drinks orders and clearing plates. All with a nice sense of humour. A final surprise that made me smile was a bunch of daffodils from the pub for mums and a photograph with a printed copy before you left. What a lovely gesture. Thank you 😊

Stopped in for a couple of drinks. No cask ales, no vegan or gluten free options on the food menu. We were served by an underage girl. Surfaces and floors were sticky and unclean. Not a nice atmosphere or experience.

The new menu was certainly worth the wait. There is a nice mix of food on the menu. Great to see Sandwiches and Jacket potatoes too. We called on a Friday lunch time and it was fantastic to see lots of people there having a meal. I had the gammon from the light bites section with Stilton Sauce and my wife had the hunters chicken. Both cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and we cannot wait to come back and sample another meal.

Apparently under new management so thought we’d try it, wish we hadn’t was kept waiting ages at the bar even though no one else waiting, we asked if were serving food were told yes. Picked off the menus on the table to then be told it was Sunday lunches only. No mention of this when we asked about food and why have other menus on table. Dinner came piping hot but absolutely tasteless, asked for mint sauce which took ages in fact had to ask again and one meal was lamb which stated mint sauce included. Staff not welcoming at all felt like complete waste of money for horrible dinner will not be returning

We went to this pub today for a quick bite as was passing. On arrival we thought we would have to wait a long time for the meal as the landlord said the pub was pretty busy for a Wednesday and he was on his own. As it was the meal came out freshly cooked and within a reasonable time frame and was delicious. The thing that stuck out for us was the pure kindness the landlord showed as he had overheard the conversation we were having about something my friends grandson had lost due to bullies stealing them whilst at school. The landlord presented my friend with duplicates of the items that the boy had had stolen and asked my friend to give them to the grandson. We were so overwhelmed with such an act of kindness that you would rarely see in the world today. This pub deserves to do well and would like to say a big thankyou to the landlord again as he's made a little boy very happy and restored his faith that people can be nice.

Myself and my partner decided to try the curry night at The Gate on a Wednesday evening, we arrived and as we were walking to the main entrance we were greeted by between 8-10 customers smoking right in the entrance, so we had to walk right through the middle of them, which for a non smoker was very unpleasant. I have nothing against people that wish to smoke, but I really could not understand why they were not in the smoking shelter which has been specially built and was only a few feet away from the place they were all standing, the smokers had even taken the ashtrays from the smoking shelter and but them at the entrance on the posts (see photographs).

We like this pub and is the closest to our house. The staff are always friendly and whenever we've eaten there it's always been good. On this occasion we went for early evening drinks and they were very reasonable ( a G&T; and a Black Russian ) at around £10 for both, and that was with a Rhubarb Gin that was awesome.

We eat here quite regularly and it is always great, Craig, Maria and the team are friendly and helpful. Always lots of offers on food and drinks. Would recommend.

Very friendly, fabulous fresh cooked food the burgers are to die for all made to order so if you have to wait a while I wouldn't complain because there is no ping ping going on like all the mc pubs out there

Came here at a non busy time, hardly any customers. Waitress very friendly. Place was decent and cosy looking. Waited 30 mins for jacket potato and beans and when it came it was the smallest thing we’ve ever seen! It was clearly just pinged in the microwave, the skin on it was thin and the potato looked like large new potato rather than a jacket. corn on the cob was was over microwaved and chewy. Very disappointing after reading so many good reviews. We did mention it to the waitress however had no feedback. I really would avoid or at least do not order a potato!

We've been to the gate now several times and the food has been absolutely amazing whatever we've had, service always spot on, food takes a while to be cooked but that's not a bad thing, it's a good thing, it means it's being cooked fresh, and it shows, excellent!

I had taken my mum into Burton shopping for her birthday we come from Nuneaton on the way back we was trying to find somewhere to eat we have driven past this pub so many times we thought shall we just go in have a look, I'm glad we did it wasn't very busy so we had a look at the menu and decided upon having a Sunday lunch, we both had beef which didn't take long to arrive when it came it was a good size with plenty of variety on the plate and the cauliflower cheese was the best I've ever tasted , meat was lovely crispy Yorkshire puddings and loads of gravy the dinner had plenty of taste ,I was to full for a pudding but they also looked lovely

Popped in after a day of walking with the dogs, we had an incredible meal in the bar with the dogs lay by our sides, the chef asked if it was okay to feed our dogs and brought out two full plates of beef cuts for them, thought that was really nice!! Food was perfect! Made a really lovely evening!

On our way to Derby we made a point of stopping here for lunch as it had been so good last time. Sadly we live in Gloucestershire, but if we were closer we would be regulars. Why is this? Firstly the lunchtime offer is great: one course for £4.50, two for £6.50, and three for £8.50. We both had Breaded plaice and chips. Delicious piece of plaice which was cooked perfectly, with FRESH chips and frozen peas. Everything was perfect and we opted for a side each of bread and butter. Portions were generous. Husband had Apple pie and custard, and I had ice cream. Service was friendly, and with two drinks our bill was just over £17. There are some excellent offers throughout the week, so give The Gate a try. There will still be access even though the road is closed for the next two weeks. Another thing that impressed was that the wooden tables were not sticky. What a pleasant change these days! The whole place is clean and welcoming.

Called in on the off chance on a Monday with wife and kids, happened to be the 2 for 1 grill night. Myself and wife went for the Sirloin Steak (£9.60 for 2) which was cooked just as we requested and very tasty, kids had burgers and burritos which according to them were delicious. All meals, a bottle of red and three large cokes come to the grand sum of £44.00 !! Unbeatable value for money.

Called with my wife on a Thursday evening. Most friendly and cheeful greeting when we ordered our opening beers. One had Hobgoblin and the other Stella Artois lager - both excellent. Ordered starters followed by rare steak. Starters were lovely and arrived in nice time - bit of long wait between courses but when steaks did arrive they were well worth the wait. Meat was succullent and full of flavour, chips were lovely and hot and beautifully cooked. Price was extremely reasonable. We have been looking for a "local" where we can obtain nice food at reasonable prices - looks like we have found one. Many thanks and best of luck for the future

Called in last Sunday after a day out in the blistering sun, as we were looking for a pub with outdoor seating due to us having the dog with us. The lady that served us was lovely & provided me with a jug of iced water for my sun parched mutt, whilst we sampled something a bit stronger. Food was agreed to be bought over to the tables near the tree where we were due to needing shade for our visit & although the waiting time was a little longer than our bellies would have liked, the food was freshly cooked, hot & plenty of it. Toilets were clean & tidy & clearly this bar is ideal for us to come back when on our bikes, to as its biker friendly, with all the visiting bikers that day being well behaved & quiet, not loud & obnoxious like some folk fear. Would gladly visit again & recommend to anyone, especially the biker community.

Called in Sunday afternoon for a drink on way back from shopping, As we walked in there were two ashtrays full either side of the entrance door obviously from the night before and it had also been raining so the smell was awful, we should have departed then but didn't, we went to order two drinks but the pub was still being hovered from the night before, surely this shouldn't be done whilst open for Business. Had a glass of wine and pint of lager £8.19 wasn't even nice, decided to ditch the drinks and go down the road to a different pub, drinks £1.20 cheaper....NEVER AGAIN

We're currently in The Gate Inn. The pub has just been taken over by new owners. It has had a bit of a spruce up and looks all the better for it. Stella, Pedigree and Guinness are all on tap. The pub has a lovely country feel to it in the bar and lounge. Children are welcome and they have a large beer garden and outside seating area. They have special deals eg Grill Night is buy one get one free on Mondays after 5pm. Two dine with wine for £20 on Thursday after 5pm. Curry night is Wednesday after 5pm £7.95 with a pint. I've just had the pedigree and steak pie. It was served with loads of mash, veg and a jug of gravy. I have to say it was lovely!! Just waiting on the apple pie and custard. We'll definitely be back to support our local and give the young couple a chance in the business. Thanks. ( By the way I don't know the owners and have never met them before this is an honest review, as my others are)

Me and my other half and our little boy (3) have been to the gate twice in 2 weeks, the food is great! Fantastic home-made chips, nice friendly landlord, will do anything to help. Only recently just been taken over and what potential the pub has especially for the summer with the beer garden, ideal to call in for a drink and some food and let the kids have a play. Really reasonable prices aswell! Will definitely be returning :)

Decided to have a pub lunch on our way to a short break in Peak District. Saw sign and pulled in. Landlord made us very welcome. Went for three courses for GBP8.50 . Were told portions are same as for evening ones on this special lunchtime deal. Food was tasty with lovely hand carved ham and fresh not frozen chips. It was basic pub food. Not outstanding, but great value and in pleasant surroundings with a very personable landlord. Would visit again if in the area. Hope new management are able to rectify problems caused by predecessor.

Great pub that is under new management (who might I add are doing a fab job!). Had a lovely meal here with my other half. Better than the standard 'pub grub' you get most places. They do different themed nights I.e grill night, which is brilliant value for money. Looking forward to visiting again. Will be great for the summer time as has a nice little beer garden. Best food around the area for a fair price, New Owner is very pleasant, Amazing Atmosphere, All Vehicle friendly includes bikers. Event can be organised with owner and just an all rounder as a pub. Advise going there for food, drink and laugh.Pool, Darts and Jukebox as well as other games are situated near bar area.

Arrived at the gate 30+ for a family annual get together, was told we were not expected and there was no buffet, the landlord has only been there a couple of weeks and the last person never passed on our booking, the landlord and lady were excellent they pulled out all the stops, they made us a lovely buffet, very very impressed with everything, thank you very much

been back to the gate under new management and food was very good didn't know what to expect because last landlord could not fault but in all fairness Craig and Marie doing an excellent job keep up the good work your doing a grand job good luck to you.

Found this very welcoming and friendly place on my travels, the landlord and staff are very friendly and treat you more like a friend rather than just a customer, had lunch there which was superb, all home made food which makes a change from the usual stuff you get from other places, as I had such a good time there the first time, I have made the effort to get back there when ever I can, I would highly recommend the Gate Inn to every one, it is one of the best establishments I have visited around the country, top marks for excellence.

Had an amazing night here for my birthday with friends, Mike ( the landlord ) did an amazing job making my night special. The food was well worth the money! Would recommend this to anyone.

My daughter and I dropped into the Gate Inn for a late lunch on a Wednesday afternoon at about 2:00pm to break our journey home. Perhaps unsurprisingly the car park and pub were empty. The pub itself is nicely decorated and when busy probably had a good ambiance but it felt a bit bleak when we were there. The lady behind the bar was very friendly and there was no problem ordering our food, the menu said that most of the offers were on till 3:00pm. My daughter wanted a Diet Coke and I wanted a cappuccino but apparently the machine was broken. I needed something hot to drink so the lady suggested a hot chocolate which was actually very nice. The big disappointment was the food, plaice and chips for me and burger and chips for my daughter, which took about 25 minutes to arrive. The chips were beautifully stacked like a game of Jenga but they looked as if they'd spent a VERY long time in a spray tanning booth, so they were probably quadruple cooked. They were floppy inside and out and my daughter reckoned that the deep fat fryer probably hadn't got up to temperature properly. My plaice was nice once I'd got through the breadcrumb coating which had the consistency of cardboard. The burger was apparently ok but not outstanding. The total price was £11.55 which I think is a bit over the top for a not very brilliant offering. I suspect that this is one of those places which performs much better when it's busy. We didn't bother complaining as we were keen to get home but I shall think twice about eating in really empty places in the future.

Been visiting here for 4 years now and Mike (The New Landlord) who has been there for well over a year has completley transformed the place. Cannot beat the quality of food for the price and the pedigree is always lovely. My Wife and Daughter enjoy going and we always meet our inlaws there for a meal and an afternoon session. The atmosphere is second to none and even though its a Marstons pub theres a true feeling of a family run pub. Keep up the good work!!!
