The gate fryer in Amber Valley

Finally a chippy that opens later than most other places! This one has become our local. Staff are always nice, food is good and the batter it top notch. Price is on point too, what you'd expect, but they do give good portion sizes too. All in, a great chippy. Looking forward to. The next time we get a hankering for chippy tea and curry.

Thought we'd try a new chippy out but wasn't very happy from the get go. Delivery was taking far too long, Infact I was able to wire up a new plug socket down in my workshop, return all the items and objects back to where they came from and sit down and play 25 minutes on a game whilst we wait. We mainly order take aways in the weekend as we both work 7 days a week so due to our tight schedule we do hope for no more than 45 minutes to an hour for delivery. The food, the sausages are fine but they aren't exactly hard to cook, the curry pots could do with being abit bigger but do taste nice and are thick. However the chips which is the most important part of a chip shop let it down. The chips are well under cooked as if they are rushing them to keep up with demand. I always go by quality not quantity. The chips are extremely soggy, crispy in the outside and fluffy on the inside are well done chips.

Best food I had! Ordered house special, mixed meat - real quality meat, big portions. Highly recommend it!

Mediterranean kebab with salad and mint sauce was absolutely delicious tonight thank you for the putting me the extra sauce on the task for actual definitely be ordering again

Poor customer service. I’ve been in ordered fish chips and curry, reiterated twice when ordering CURRY. Only to be given gravy and fobbed off being told “I’ve got gravy on the order receipt” well maybe if this member of staff (new young girl) actually listened then this wouldn’t have been an issue. I can with 100% certainty say I didn’t tell her gravy cos I hate it on fish and chips, but this member of staff was adamant I asked for gravy… couldn’t say “sorry that’s my bad, if you pop back I’ll sort that for you” trying to put the blame on customers is ridiculous. Certainly won’t be coming to gate fryer again

My first time at the gate fryer, staff are very polite and helpful.probely the best fish and chips I've eaten in a very long time and my dads in his 80's and hes had many fish suppers in his life and gave the thumbs up.Keep up the good work.will be back.

First and last visit yesterday teatime . Ordered two large fish and chips with peas . Although the fish was freshly cooked, nice and white and a good portion size , the batter was soggy and horrible , we both had to peel it off and just eat the fish , there wasn’t a crispy bit of batter on either fish . The chips were a huge portion and looked better than they tasted , didn’t like the texture ,they were a bit like eating cardboard. The peas were fine .An expensive treat , we haven’t had fish and chips from a chippy for years , we won’t be doing it again , it’s better in a pub to be honest and not that much more expensive.

Not a lot of chips and a long wait for food

This is the 3rd time here but there won’t be a 4th, after travelling 12mile round trip to here the food this time was very poor bland no taste in fact the food left a bad taste in my and my wife’s mouth also the order was wrong sorry to say I wont be returning again would have left 0 stars if I could.

Good price too.just to add the large fish battered was heavenly the cods flesh was large pieces brilliant white and cooked in an amazing batter. Mushy peas a treat and chips yummy I really think the fryer here is magic to be so consistent.

Had a cheese burger with chips the burger was cooked as ordered and chips were the best I have had from a chip shop the delivery was spot on friendly driver and on time will deff be returning

Food is fabulous, and service is quick. Prices and portions are also great.

Food was good, long wait for the fish, but at least it was cooked to order, the chips could have been cooked a bit more and warmer, lots of fat on the wrapping paper. Will definitely go again though.

Brilliant kebabs with a nicely varied menu, friendly staff and a clean shop. No complaints from this side, they even know what I mean when I request the correct amount of salad (none).

Me and my wife came in Saturday lunch time. Our medium cod special with peas was absolutely amazing. Will definitely be back again, great staff too! Keep it up👍🏻

Usually our order is very hot and lovely which is why we choose this business but our last delivery was cold which isn't pleasant for a hot dinner, very disappointed this time.

Staff are super friendly...food is always cooked well and there is loads choice.. very well priced and decent sized potions .. 100% recommend to anyone who hasn't been before .. good parking aswell and a nice seating area

Best chippy in area by a long way. Fish and chips always fresh and it's not expensive either. Only thing that would make it better for me would be they cook in lard not oil but get that's not an option for most. Oh and big wooden forks, serviettes and cardboard packaging +++

Absolutely useless, rang up to say food hasn’t been delivered while on just it it said it had, they was so rude, took our money and not re delivering, got to sort it out with just eat now, the bloke on phone was pathetic, needs to learn some manners, joke of a man!! STAY AWAY

Today we ordered our tea. It was due at 5.55 but didn’t arrive until 6.30. By which time the lettuce had gone limp and slimey so had the cucumber on the kebab. The battered burger was not crispy it was covered in grease and floppy and cold. The chips were overcooked the only saving Grace was the peas and the fish cake. But all of it was cold. Worst meal we have had from there

We had our first Kababs from here tonight and they was one of the best we’ve had. The Nan bread was great. Not shy with the portions and the chips was cooked lovely and fluffy inside.

Food Was fresh, hot and really nice. It's difficult finding a decent chippy in the Ripley area but I would definately recommend this place. The shop is very clean and there are a couple of tables and chairs if you wish to eat in and the staff that have served me and my family on the few visits we have had have always been very efficient and friendly. Prices are average compared to other take out places in the area, but I think this is the norm now because of inflation. Sufficient parking outside aswell

This place just won't answer the phone for an order, 2 Saturdays in a row, yet drove by and empty shop except for staff, no customers ? so We've taken our business elsewhere, very strange that they can loose business for some weird no phone answering policy. Bizarre!!!

Tried this place for the first time since my regular chippie closed, warm welcome and my order was cooked fresh, the portions were more than i could handle, everything was cooked well. Will go again.

Wow. By far the best chippy I have ever eaten at.... it maybe my new guilty pleasure. Had a doner kebab yesterday with salad. The meat was so juicy. Salad was fresh. Ended up getting it again tonight as I just had to try the fish. Fish is very succulent and tasty. Chips were great and curry sauce was delicious. Also had a spam fritter and can't believe how tasty it was. Definitely our new go to chippy.

Had to wait a short while to get served. I didn't mind waiting for the food as I knew it was going to be fresh. At busy times parking can be awkward, especially if you are not used to the area

Eaten here twice now. Like that fact you can sit in also. Kebabs are huge and really nice. Scampi and pies tried also. Very pleasant staff, polite and welcoming. No greasy food. Spotlessly clean. All round super.

What a lovely experience we had at the Gate Fryer, we had a warm greeting by a lovely lady and ended having a lovely chat with the owner. We ordered a range of food from fish to kebabs for the family and everyone enjoyed the food. Food was piping hot and really tasty. Would recommend anyone to go. We will definitely go back again.

Piping hot food and cooked perfectly. Plus plenty. The first time i visited The gate fryer i was 100% happy. I have edited my comment because the last time i visited i was so disappointed, dry chips, etc, nothing was piping hot like the last time, such a disappointment. First visit better staff who cooked everything to perfection, second visit different staff and what a disappointment to their cooking.

Best kebab box meal ever!!!! Had to take half of it home in a doggie bag there was that much..... easily plenty for two to share and absolutely bang on..... juicy meat plenty of sauce and seasoning fresh clean crispy chips and a choice of nan or pitta bread.my lad hoovered his 8 chicken nuggets and chips too and was well impressed with his meal too.will be back in if we're up there again as we're 100 miles away but would we'll be worth the de-tour if we were nearby.much better value than then fast food outlets about 😎👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Very good value meal and good to have tables inside to sit at. Plenty of parking Perfect stop off on the way back from the Peak District if you're travelling back to Nottingham or Leicester.

Called in and ordered food one evening on my way home. Really good portions giving value for money. Everything was wrapped well so it was still hot when I arrived home. There's plenty of parking, you can eat in or take out. Very friendly service, I will be calling in again.

3 I think is high. Was a mid2-3 star. I had the doner kebab naan and a portion of regular chips. The doner meat was really dry, the flavour was okay but far too dry. (I had this with 2 sauces too). The chips were okay at best, cooked nicely but they were lacking any sort of flavour. The food was okay but I think for the quality the prices are too high. Id probably not go here again.

After hearing a number of decent reviews from friends my wife and I gave them a go. Ordered a large haddock and a buttered cob with a large sausage. My wife had a deal on a fish and chip dinner. My wife’s was ok at best, the fish was over cooked and the chips were average to ok, they just tasted of the oil they were cooked in, the peas that came with it were so bright green they looked irradiated… my haddock was blooming awful, they left the skin on it and it was overcooked. I honestly only managed to scrape enough fish out of it to make a small fish cob with it. Half the batter was inedible due the skin and most of the rest was chewy because of how badly it was cooked. The sausage was what you’d expect - no real complaints. But really it wasn’t a good experience. Maybe they are better at kebabs? Definitely not with fish and chips. Will not be going back.

Ordered food via just eat, we knew they closed at 9pm so when food hadn’t arrived by 21:10 we called to see where our order was. They did answer and told us it would be with us in 8 mins! No idea how the woman knew what order was was on about, however we have given up waiting! 😡 useless! And why tell us it’s on its way if it’s not!

Ordered fish and chips but found what appeared to be worms within the battered fish. I was told this was “normal”. The following day I had bad stomach pains and sickness. I would avoid eating here. Terrible service and food.
