Fantastic pub. Great selection of beers and the pizza is fantastic! The bar staff have been kind every time we’ve been in and the atmosphere is fantastic. Certainly not the pub it used to be, in fact it couldn’t be further from the old gardeners arms. Will certainly be back time and time again

Night shift guy under new ownership was terrible

A quaint little pub on a gorgeous back alley of Oxford. Really a hidden gem waiting to be discovered! I had a delicious pizza and got to sit in on some live music, so the atmosphere was great. An excellent way to spend a day off from work.

Very pleasant little pub. More traditional than contemporary style with comfy seats, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere.

The lady at the bar was fantastic and helped us with our autistic son and made us feel welcomed. Food and drinks were also great!

Superb little pub with a wonderful friendly atmosphere, much of it conjured up by Harriet behind the bar. Good range of draught beers and some distinctive keg beers. Haven’t tried the new pizza menu but they look good. You can’t ask for more really.

Lovely lady served us. Late Sunday trip. Kitchen closed for 2 days whilst they refurbished it. So we had a quick drink. Nice catch up with friends. They were very welcoming of not only our dog but also that we had a baby. Which can be loud and annoying... luckily he was quiet and peaceful. Thanks for a lovely time.

Great pub with amazing service! The lady behind the bar was attentive and would regularly check in and ask if we needed anything! Even went as far as to recommend places to visit on our stay! Highly Recommended

Cool little pub. Decent ales on pump and vinyl music playing. We didn't eat but it looked like traditional pie and a pint fayre. Very chirpy for a Monday

Looks welcoming from the outside but we honestly experienced the most horrible, unfriendly officious bar member of staff I have ever encountered (and I’ve been in a fair few pubs!) I would suggest avoiding this place and finding somewhere where they actually want you to come and have a nice time. Would definitely NOT recommend. AWFUL.

I had the lunch special, with tomato soup and a panini, mozzarella, sun dried tomato with pesto. Delicious!

A traditional pub tucked away in a pretty side road. Within walking distance of City Centre.

Great staff, well kept and served ale. The beer was so nice I managed a couple of pints. Lovely clean pub with old world charm. The kitchen wasn't open when we visited but we did have the little meat pies which were delicious and full of meat.

Worth the wait. It's been a long time coming. Since the take over its been redecorated in a beautiful style. The ales and lagers on tap are top notch. Staff always welcoming and friendly, especially Jade who made a lasting impression. Definitely worth a visit.

Quite simply I was amazed how wonderful the food and service is here and understandably, it was recommended by a friend that eats here every time they visit Oxford.

The carpet is exceptional....... exceptionally dirty. I was particularly impressed by the MASSIVE black splodge by the bar. This was completely out of character compared with the rest of the dirty stains. I can only wonder what made it. The seats fair no better. I have seen cleaner coal miners after a 12 hour shift underground! The 3 mouldy bananas in the fruit bowl were a nice decorative touch. It appears the cleaners have been off ill for the last 30 years. If you are looking for a drink with an authentic Oxford experience, then look elsewhere. On the plus side, the tapestry of the river Thames was welcome distraction from the multitude of aging certificates adorning the walls!

The owner was very pleasant. Could not say the same for his rude wife/partner!

Nice meals ,a bit dated, ideal for a mystery tour

Although it's good value food we found the landlady a little daunting, no welcoming smile and a bit sinister.

Do not confuse with the other Gardener’s Arms that serves amazing brunches! (‘Someone’ might have made that mistake)… truthfully, I’d give 1 star if not for it being such a bizarro experience that will make it forever memorable. The sandwiches are stale and borderline meatless, the environment flat out dirty (I dig a great quirky/dive blend vibe but this is just quirky/dirty), and, seriously, do not even try to engage the staff. That said, the whole ‘don’t give a …’ about every aspect of the experience made it a wonderful experience with my dining partner as we quickly ascertained this was not the GA recommended. So… if you want the weirdest hour in Oxford (yes, it takes that long to make a sandwich, go for it!

Very old pub with clientele to match. I unfortunately startled the landlady by asking how she was. The bench seats could do with ripping out in some places, just cleaning in others. The three older guys in the bar, when one of them was not berating a small dog, were looking at their phones. Didn't try the food opting to go into Oxford by bus than stay in a venue that didn't appear welcoming. Aspalls on tap so not all bad. Lemon in coke had seen better days.

Soup pub. Quality soup. Kind and welcoming. Good value for a light lunch.

Overhyped pub with the USP of being vegetarian but underwhelming food with terrible service; we will not return and would not recommend to friends. Overall the food was average but nothing more than that. The calzone crust was slightly overdone and the kebab didn’t have much flavour. The spicy chips were nice and we regret not getting a burger, which looked good. We wouldn’t normally bother leaving a negative review critiquing mediocre food but the service was abysmal. We arrived at 8pm and our food only arrived at 9:50pm. Although it was busy at the start, several tables ordered, ate, paid and left in this time. Even when it was quieter there was no staff presence on the floor. Disappointingly, there was minimal explanation, no meaningful apology and no attempt to improve our experience. It’s a shame because we were hoping for a better experience.

I was in Oxford on my own for the night and called in on the off-chance for a quiet pint, a packet of crisps and to read my newspaper in this small local pub. As I didn't have much to do I couldn't help noticing customer behaviour and interactions and noticed that if you were respectful to the owners they are respectful in return. Great customer service and choice of drinks

Dave and Jenny keep a lovely pub. Often just the two of them, working hard to keep the regulars and visitors watered and fed. Sandwiches are wholesome, curry is better than you’d think and the beer selection (always at least two casks, including their own branded Special ale) is as long as it is wide. Highly recommended.

Ace little throwback pub. Visit this place and the rose and crown on North parade avenue and you won't go far wrong! It's like going back in time, and in a good way....!

Great town pub the way pubs were. This is not a chain pub. It is full of its own character and run by a couple who take real pride in keeping it looked after.

Classic old pub. Could be 1970 in there. The WiFi quality also helps with this deception.

Situated in a small trendy side street in north Oxford. The pub is far from being trendy though, thank goodness. A good range of beers including their own "Gardeners". A good range of spirits and not just trendy overpriced ones. All round prices were very good.No background music. The kind of place where you go for conversation or just to have a quiet pint.Thank goodness these places still exist!

Spent a lovely evening here recently. Good 'old fashioned' pub - albeit with a tv for sport etc. Dogs allowed. Welcoming tenants, delicious food, reasonable prices - what's not to like.

If I could give this pub zero stars, I would. I am English, and I have to say that this is one of the worst pubs I have ever had the misfortune to visit. Me and a friend visited on a Saturday night and the elderly couple behind the bar, who I presume were the landlord and landlady were very rude and miserable. We only stayed because everywhere else nearby was full.I had the beefburger and it was dry, chewy and flavourless and tasted like it was a frozen burger just reheated. No chips were served but crisps instead, which I've never heard of in my life. Seriously, AVOID this place like the plague....people this rude don't deserve to have your custom.

Cracking classic pub with great value veggie options. We had lasagne and a stilton bake both served with garlic bread and salad. Good point of their own beer too.

The pub was very quiet when I went (a Thursday around 7pm), which made it a nice environment to have a beer and chat. Small selection of beer, but what I tried I liked (their house beer).

This place is just a must visit. It feels like a walk back in time. It's wonderful to see old photos of Oxford in an old fashioned atmosphere. It's a treat! And the beer is well kept!

Just love this pub... my partner and I both run businesses and at the end of a busy week, we usually end up in the Gardener's Arms. Its warm, its comfortable, Dave and Jenny are lovely and the food is great as is the beer. This is a real honest British pub...if you want something pretentious, then go elsewhere. If you want a true British local, look no further.

Cosy pub. With decent bar meals and friendly staff I liked it. Owner/ manager very pleasant. Dogs seem to be welcome which I m not keen on but this can be forgiven beers good.

Has the tastiest bitter in the UK. It's EXCLUSIVE to this pub. Owner, a beer expert, chose it from specialised list when negotiating with big brewer. The beer is called "Gardener's Arms" . When visiting Oxford, trying this beer is a MUST (you'll never be able to talk about Britain's best beers otherwise)

Locale molto carino con tavoli sia al chiuso che in un giardino interno. Il servizio non è stato rapidissimo ma la qualità era molto buona. Tutti i piatti sono vegetariani ma la scelta è molto ampia. Consigliato!

I really like this pub, run by lovely people it's clean, neat and tidy, with good ale always on tap and in very good condition. Plus it's out of the way of the melee just down the main road. I see it as my bolt hole, go visit and see for yourselves

Friendly pub with Sunday quiz, outside area and good beer.

Although it's not particularly busy, it has the atmosphere of a Japanese country restaurant that has been run by a couple for many years. The shopkeeper? My father is also kind and wonderful. The curry is actually good.

Throwback English pub. One of the few places where you step back in time upon entry. A time before pubs were 'gastro' and they were the hub of their community. Stopped in here for some food whilst on an overnight trip to Oxford. Great venue with plenty of pictures on the wall, including a number of local heroes and sport teams. Good selection of beers and an interesting menu (with plenty of vegetarian options) Food wise I went for the Goan Curry which I didn't expect much from but was excellent.

Great pint of the black stuff, wonderful pub, really old school all that was missing was the old boys playing crib, wonderful.

Great little pub, the real thing with great people

Très bon repas du soir pour ce restaurant ambiance pub dans lequel les gens viennent manger ou simplement boire un (des) verre (s) pour passer la soirée entre amis. Ambiance évidement un peu bruyante mais pas trop. Boisson et commande à aller chercher et payer au bar. Prix correct pour des portions ‘gourmandes’. Nous avons apprécié. On retournera car un des meilleurs repas de notre séjour. 50 euro pour 3 plats, 2 bières et une fries.

Will visit again as soon as I can ... the treats are amazing, ranging from yer standard dog treat to Dave the landlord’s secret store of Haslet ( still can’t figure out where he keeps it) Anyway I reckon this is the MOST dog friendly pub in the world. Seats are comfy as well..Jenny the landlady lets me get up on them which is great place to chill out after a good squirrel chase in the Park I love her lots ...

Steak and Guinness Pie was good and the house brand of cask ale was quite tasty. Pub is very quiet on a week night and the proprietor was very reserved. Overall a nice place to pop in.

Hearty leek and potato soup, accompanied by a generous serving of bread and butter and blue cheese sprinkled on top to boot. Pleasant atmosphere and a decent house bitter.

Favourite pub in Oxford. It's a dying breed

Unneccesarily rude management. My guild come here on a regular basis for meetings, giving them lots of business. What did I get in return? The manager threw my drink away because it was in a Costa cup-it was in fact a lemsip I was just finishing but she did not even ask nor care.

The place itself is cozy but very unfortunately the staff are rude. I'd never go there again.

An early snack before heading to the theatre, inexpensive nice freshly made sandwiches, locals were customers.

Found it by chance, but that's exactly how I imagine an English pub to be. A bit outside of the city center, but still worth a visit.
