Plough at 38 in Oxford

Delicious food, great service, and a cosy atmosphere! This place has it all and we really enjoyed our dinner and evening here. We got one of the massive square pizzas which easily fed the two of us. We also got a drink each, and chips - the total price of the meal was just over £30 which we thought was pretty reasonable for dinner out for 2. The staff were also super friendly and helpful, despite being quite busy.

We had longhorn beef steak pie, mash and veg which was very tasty. The pub is cosy and at the time there was a variety of ages customers.

Lovely old pub in the center of Oxford. We stopped by in the evening for a few drinks and sat upstairs by the windows which was a beautiful and quiet setting, even for a Friday night! We couldnt work the barcode menu as not all the options were available there, so had to order at the bar- but the drinks were great. Kind service and helpful waiters especially as we didnt know the area and were obviously tourists! Can definitely recommend for a drink- its a nice space and has a classic ambiance.

Awfully flat beer, hopeless staff. Manager has no charisma on how to lead or run a bar and its just genuenly a poorly run venue. Was really looking forward to the reopening of The Plough... dissapointed. Never seen a venue charge for shuffle board - only deposit which is understandable as the kit is expensive.

The service was quick and the food was lovely. They could do with checking for cobwebs as there were quite a few.

The decorations are nice but the staff were rude, inexperience and constantly tried to rush us out of the bar despite us knowing it would close in 1 hour.

I’d like to leave a good review on this place, but seriously can’t. Literally waited an hour just to go up to the counter and realise that our orders hadn’t even started being prepared. We were the only 4 people who had ordered and had watched people leave and get food before us. Some worker came around with some food that wasn’t ours, instead it was some people who had already left because they were sick of waiting too. Same waiter left randomly before serving us, the manager was stoned and the whole place was in shambles, so we got a refund and left at bloody 8:30. I’m very confused cause it says the pub was made in the 1600s. Something at this place has got to change.🤷‍♂️

Had a pimms on our day visit to Oxford

Cozy little pub, we only stopped by for a drink mid afternoon, the kitchen closes in the afternoon so we couldn't get food. Dog friendly, the barman even offered a bowl of water. Staff was really friendly. Only drawback is price, we paid £3 for a can of Coke. Which I guess is what you get for being in Oxford town center.

I like it alot. Very interesting range of cocktails. For instance, haribo rings was one I ordered. I drank about 5 of them and I felt quite wavey. If you have some things to do or commitments to attend to after visiting, I would advise drinking less than 5 of them.

Very nice spot on Cornmarket street with tables out and the possibility to order food and drinks and do" people watching" Just opposite St Michael Tower.

For vegetarians/vegans I recommend the vegan burger, pretty standard hamburger with chips, slightly overpriced. The staff was very slow. Lovely exterior but it doesn't match the interior atmosphere (for the first floor at least).

Located centrally, quite some options for drinks, but very limited for food, the atitude was not the best in terms recomending stuff like having Birra moretti as beer of the house instead of a local one like Oxford IPA... no distinctive atmosphere

Lovely looking pub in the heart of the city of Oxford. I visited at lunchtime in the week and there were just two employees working very hard to get everything done.

Ok for a drink in the town centre.

Disappointed by both service and food. Being asked to go to the counter to order, even being as quiet as it was on a weekday lunch time, might be quite standard in some pubs and nandos, but I wouldn't expect them to then add on service charge as standard and then not provide a bill which highlighted this. I'm not clear what 'service' we were covertly charged for, but I don't see this as an acceptable. With respect to the food, the meat in my steak sandwich was cold but I had waited so long to get it that I didn't ask for it to be reheated before eating. My partner (characteristically) had no complaints with her food, hence the extra star. Perhaps we caught them on a bad day, but I doubt I'll return.

Place had a really bad smell to it when we walked in, we put it down to a fish dish someone may have had but then seen a sign saying no food so who knows The person behind the bar was probably the most miserable man I’ve met in my life, asking him for a drink was just too much for him

Went in for a weekday lunch- the menu was more limited than on the website and the food was really not good- not flavourful, incorrect textures, overly salty etc. the drinks also weren’t great. the pub is child friendly and the staff were helpful.

Always a place to enjoy a delicious pint of beer

피쉬앤칩스 파는 가게중 너무 붐비지 않으면서도 가게 후기가 좋은 집이라 선택했다. 펍이라 술을 안 시키니 의아해하는거 같더라. 음식이나 서비스는 좋지도 나쁘지도 않았지만 좋은 위치에 붐비지 않아서 좋았다.

We stopped here for lunch. Very nice atmosphere and quick service. I had the salmon bagel, which came with fries and a side salad, it was delicious! Will definitely be back.

The exterior of the pub is lovely, as is the ground floor. However, the first floor has the decor and ambience of a motorway service station. Also in common with a service station are the overpriced burgers. Whichever one you choose, they are all £18 each; for that price I expect more than a burger in a plain bun with hardly any cheese or salad garnish, and a very meagre portion of chips. Very poor value fir money.

Great service and great pub food

Get rid of the guy with the man bun. Everyone else working there was great. He was incredibly rude when speaking to us, there are definitely other more polite ways of going about situations - doesn’t need to be working in a pub in a busy area with that manor. Better customer service is advised. And the chicken Kiev’s had no filling… was just a huge chunk of breaded dry chicken. I never leave reviews at places - this one needed to be done. All the best on making the pub a lot better.

My order -hot steak sandwich- served very late and very cold

This is an edit of a review. My original experience was positive, this recent visit, very poor. I attended a large , late Christmas work event in the upstairs part of the building. The greeting from the man behind the downstairs bar was unfriendly, he was clearly annoyed that I had interrupted his conversation. Our waiter upstairs was even worse, every polite request, was greeted with a shrug or a grimace. An example- when an enquiry was made about which bottle of Wine he would recommend, his reply , 'I don't drink Wine, I wouldn't know' When I said Ok, perhaps you could tell us which is the most popular, his response, 'I don't pay attention to things I don't like' Astonishingly rude, arrogant and unprofessional attitude. Clearly, The Plough doesn't need the business, if they can treat customers with so much contempt. The food (we had the Xmas menu) Was good, albeit, very small portions, and I really like the decor and atmosphere, which was let down, by the terrible service. Disappointed

Awesome food. I have rented the upstairs twice now and highly recommend for a party or event.

Really busy place with a good atmosphere and friendly staff. We didn't try the food but from seeing what was coming out for other people, it looked good! Only downside was the drinks selection as there was only one cask available when we visited on a Saturday evening. The mulled wine was nice, if a little bit sweet! Well done to the staff for being so kind and polite. We were sat right by the bar and overheard multiple customers complaining about things that couldn't be helped by the bar staff (running out of certain things, questioning service charges), and the issues were dealt with professionally and the staff stayed positive. I know I couldn't do that!!

Estimation went right down after visiting the toilets, filthy, messy. Makes you wonder what the kitchens like. Also a member of staff had a verbal altercation with another member of staff using the F word which was so un-professional and put us off going again.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Possibly one of the worst experiences in a pub I’ve ever had. Firstly, the menu was extremely limited. Claims to be a gastropub but served what I would describe as poor pub grub. There really isn’t much to eat if you don’t want chips and bread. I had a pie with cold, gloopy mash and a small portion of luke warm, fairly unappealing vegetables. Secondly, the service was appalling. The bar staff couldn’t crack a smile, the “waiter” was ill informed and grumpy. Inverted commas around waiter, as frankly he didn’t do much - you have order your own food and drink at the bar (walking up and down the stairs to get there - more on those stairs later). The pub cheekily then sticks a 12.5% service charge on the bill, which is outrageous given that service was non-existent at best. Finally, and most importantly, we had a first aid emergency which was not dealt with adequately. One member of our party fell down the stairs, which were extremely slippery. Due to the lack of table service there had been a lot of customer footfall up and down the stairs, carrying and spilling drinks. The stairs did not have a suitable handrail as it was covered in Christmas decorations. My mother slipped on the stairs and badly hurt her ankle. She received no first aid from the pub staff, who didn’t record the accident or check if she was ok. They brought us some ice, when we asked for it. She was left sitting in the toilets, in pain, being stepped around he people on their way to the loo. No member of staff came back to check on her. It’s a good job that I’m a first aider. We were a large party of ten, we spent a lot of money. We won’t be doing it again.

Nice looking pub but that pretty much sums up all good things that can be said about this place. The fermenters are in fact decorations (no real in-house brewery going on) and the choice is quite scarce... The staff was unprofessional (inexperienced youngsters) and rude, both at the taps (our choice was out of stock although it being displayed on the counter - cool and normal), not to mention the random waitress blowing out candles in our faces... With her saliva on our faces we were left thinking how is it possible that under the COVID protocol alibi/pretext (as per the bartender's/landlord's explanation) fermenters are being out of use?

Usually I really enjoy it here and the staff are friendly and it has a lively atmosphere. However, a friend and I popped in for a coffee on a Sunday morning (it is a pub/bar but they have advertising on the outside staying 'amazing coffee') ...yet the reaction was as if I'd said something offensive by wanting a coffee and they were overtly hostile. They then made the wrong drink and I had to say I wanted what I ordered...a strange experience that put me off and made my visiting friend want to leave.

Quick pre dinner drink, nice atmosphere

Went for lunch today...disappointing! We had a table upstairs and it was quite cold, lack of people maybe ? which says a lot. We ordered starters and mains but only one starter arrived. When we questioned it we were told we only ordered one starter, seems like there was a lack of communication between the staff., to make up for this the Manager/ supervisor gave us a complimentary drink, anyway we decided to skip the other starter and wait for our mains. Mine was fine, albeit slightly salty., however my husband ordered steak baguette with fries and was disappointed that the beef was cold as in fridge cold, and very rare ....on a warm baguette this isnt good. We have eaten here a couple times and its been good but today was an exception. I was also disappointed that they didnt do a Sunday roast, their online website states they do !!! Maybe an update is needed.

Had a steak sandwich but under cooked and very chewy, do not recommend eating this choice.

A surprising pub, very traditionally fitted oak bar, lots of copper pipes and their own ale range brewed by XT locally (Harry Porter sounds nice) - friendly hospitality and a vibrant atmosphere with a great range of beers, wine, spirits and a dining room upstairs. Did I mention tea and coffee? No real problems - maybe a tad noisy at busy times, just like a successful pub.. And the boss knows his stuff and works hard to see customers feel welcome. 9/2022 Opening hours can be erratic; closed early this evening. No sign at door explaining change of hours. More uk post Brexit and/or COVID sickness staff shortages.

Good Oxford pub in a pedestrianised street in what was an Austin Reed shop. Two cask beers on handpump when I visited. Half a dozen tables outside.

Si quieres ir a pedir a la barra y llevarte tus bebidas y cubiertos la mesa, este es tu sitio (recuerda tu número de mesa para hacer el pedido). Los camareros sólo sirven los platos y los recogen, el resto debes hacerlo todo tú mismo. Ni si quiera te traen la carta a la mesa!! El servicio es prácticamente el de un fastfood pero con precios de restaurante a la carta.

I had a really delicious fish and chips, perfectly cooked. I would highly recommend the polenta chips, the truffle mayonnaise was perfect. For desert, a gooey chocolate brownie, absolutely heaven!

Amazing experience with great food and great service! Visited the plough recently and I have to say it’s one of the best afternoons I’ve had in Oxford. Service was amazing throughout, with fantastic help from one of the bar people Jack. I had the plough fish and chips which I can not recommend highly enough. Overall a great experience.

Amazing evening experience. From the moment we walked in, until the moment we left, we were hosted spectacularly. Attention to detail was spot on throughout. The service was personable and professional and not overbearing. The food really made the evening come together. There is clearly someone out the back that loves putting their personality on a plate. We’ll be back, thanks for a great evening.

Absolutely brilliant night spent here! The food, service and drinks were of the highest order! Any problems we had were dealt with in an efficient, friendly and timely manner. We were always made to feel welcome, even when we sat in the wrong seats. This was not a problem we were accommodated to an alternate seat and on fact it was even better than where we sat! The food was exquisite! Would recommend and have already done so to family and friends. Even if you are just passing by through the high street ask of they have a free table and you won't regret it!! Thank you guys!!

Really well presented establishment with outstanding food. Some great beers on the tap and one of the best Guinness I've had when in Oxford. Can't waite to go back and enjoy some more.

Not good food and very expensive

Infested with mice. A group of 5 of us came for drinks and had at least a dozen sightings of multiple mice across both floors. When we mentioned it to staff, they really didn’t care. I get it’s Oxford and the building is old, but I have never seen a mouse in any of the other establishments on the street. Thankfully we didn’t order food, as their kitchen must be a a health hazard. I will be complaining to the relevant food safety authorities. EDIT: definitely 3-4 mice at the SAME time, definitely a true account of events, Oxfordshire council confirmed they received multiple reports about this issue and will investigate. Owner’s response is reflective of dismissive attitude from staff. So review is 100% accurate!

Popped in at the right time! Just as we left it got really busy. Staff were chatty friendly and service was excellent. Food was great as was the drinks. Nice decor inside and air conditioning!

Friendly staff and great coffee

Had a super family lunch here! A combination of burgers, fish and chips, and quinoa salad was enjoyed by all. On a hot(!) Summer’s day, the airconditioning was a welcome addition to the nice atmosphere of this place. We will definitely return here.

Horrible ! we ate horrible food in smell of fish

I ordered Fish and chips, but was not very satisfied with the taste. The fish seemed a bit stale and it was overfried - so much so that you can see in the picture below that it has turned brown. The chips, on the other hand, was incredibly good. The service is good and the staff are friendly. Located right in the heart of city, The Plough is quite popular but my personal experience with fish and chips wasn't the very best. I have tried much better fish & chips at much lower prices.

The person in charge should follow a training in hospitality. He was rude to us and preferred to blame us for his mistakes than admitting he was in the wrong. It's a shame because otherwise the place looks nice. The man at the bar was nice and polite.

Menus are tired and dirty. Fish and chips came with 8 chips total. Sides came long before main meal. Steak and ale pie was swimming with oil and tasted odd. Waiting staff didn't follow up or clear tables to be able to give feed back. In fact seemed to look down to avoid eye contact. I'd find somewhere else.

Average food at best, beer was warm (even for cask) we had steak pie and fish and chips , 8 chips total, fish was meh steak pie was horribly greasy and tasted poor, service was poor also, wouldn't recommend 😬

Shared the beef pie for lunch. A little disappointed that there was really no sauce, just beef covered with some pastry along with mashed potatoes and flavorful veggies. Service fine and nice convenient spot in the main part of town. Nice inside but the air conditioner was blaring so being something if you get cold easily!

Unhappy to be overcharged, also short changed. Can't fault the service as the place was very quiet.

Nice place and good food but is amazing how sometimes the service can bring everything down. The woman that brought our plates was nice but the guy behind the bar was kind of rude. Like I said, the food was good but regular service.

Won't be returning here - food came out at all different times even though we ordered together. They actually forgot 2 meals and we had to ask and it had "not gone through to the kitchen". They put a 12.5% service charge on each order even though we ordered at the bar! The decor is nice, however the tables had a copper finish which had sharp edges. When standing up these cut part of my trousers! The toilets werent clean at all, not sure if they've got drainage issues but each toilet looked disgusting. Overpriced and underwhelming.

Fish and chips were nice, though fries were a bit soggy and they didn't give even close to enough sauce to eat all the fish. Didn't like the burger. The cider they had was very nice.

Poor food. Tasteless and let down consindering the great decor. They forgot about a friends order, it arrived after the rest of us had finished. Also they slapped a 12.5% service charge ontop, which we had to order at the bar, and didn’t offer any chance to decline. Only noticed because a friend got their receipt. Won’t be returning

Lovely looking pub BUT let down by extremely rude staff member. We visited over the weekend and chose to sit outside and order. We headed to the bar to order ourselves but were told it was table service only - no problem at all so we sat back down and waited for someone to take our order. Except we ended up sat there waiting for over 15 minutes for someone to come along and take our drinks order which we did think was excessive. We wouldn't have mentioned anything ordinarily but noticed when the member of staff brought us out the bill that there was a 12.5% service charge added. We kindly asked if the service charge could be removed because of the long wait for our order to be taken, to be told by the young man that he didn't see what the problem was, that 15 minutes wasn't a long time to wait....and he literally turned his back on us and walked away! I don't expect that kind of response, and clearly he shouldn't be working in hospitality if he thinks it is acceptable to wait 15 minutes for your drinks order to be taken! Definitely wouldn't be returning or recommending - and we weren't the only table waiting for orders to be taken. Totally get if they were short staffed or just busy, but an apology would have been more appropriate than a snappy, rude response.

Loved it! The place, the area, the service, the food and rather reasonable prices.

It's a fun little place in in downtown Oxford. All their beer is pretty low AVP and if you are looking for a salad, I'd probably look elsewhere.
