We dropped in for lunch. I ordered a beer and to eat, the duck leg with lentils. Unfortunately, I needed to chase the drink and when the duck dish eventually arrived, in my opinion the amount of food provided was tiny. Usually in a restaurant you are questioned half way through the meal if everything is ok. Not here. I complained at the end and I was told to raise it the next time I was there and they would rectify it. I should have complained when the food was first served. I won't be back.

I have read some of the recent reviews and can only reflect on how completely different our experience was this week. My smoked haddock and delicate lemony butter sauce was just divine. My husband had calves liver and he said his was amazing too. We eat out, a lot, but I would rate this place very highly indeed.

We have been coming to The George Garden Restaurant for a few years. I hate to think what we have spent! Well over £1000 plus what we have spent in the Oak Room. Sadly we have had two poor experiences and will not be returning. Whilst the ambiance and (mostly) polite and very helpful staff are the same, the food is now extremely overpriced for what you get. When asked if everything was ok on our last visit we complained about the tastelessness and poor quality of one meal and were met with a surprised, indifferent shrug. My other half had left most of the food on her plate uneaten so it was obvious something was not right. Whilst I’m sure bookings are good at the moment, word will eventually get out. For this money I'd try elsewhere.

We had an enjoyable lunch at the George hotels informal restaurant - the Garden Room. A fixture of Stamford the public areas of the hotel were packed even on a cold winter Saturday. We had 2 main courses, a vegetarian risotto and Seabass with potatoes and mixed veg. Both dishes were nicely cooked and did not last long. Prices are reasonable though we are on dry January so sans alcohol. Service was fine with the restaurant manager Thomas friendly and welcoming.

We have been to The George many times and unfortunately this was probably the worst, and having given rave reviews in the past, I have to be fair and give a balanced review to justify just two stars. The Garden Room cannot be booked which is fine, we turned up and got seated straight away. Having got seated we were given the menus and we chose our lunch. We ordered two mains with some squid to nibble at whilst waiting. It was very busy, but the service was very slow, and some of our requests ie for some water, vinegar for the main course etc never arrived so having waited to catch someone’s attention, we waited only for it not to arrive. When the food did arrive, the nibbles came with the main course, so we returned those, only to find them on the bill at the end?! The chips were lukewarm. We were not going to return them as we would have waited even further time and then the lobster and fish would have been cold. I suggest the kitchen was very busy, chips made in batches and left on the passe thus it was a gamble as to whether you would get hot or lukewarm served. As for the dessert, we had a lemon posset which was lovely but £12 for the size of an egg. Really. As for the cheeseboard, my cheese must have been cut with a potato peeler. Slithers would best describe one of the cheeses. Shame. This is not the way we envisaged celebrating our wedding anniversary. Service has gone downhill, prices up, portions down. Sorry. I will return and hope it improves. Shame

We wanted to spend the day exploring historic Stamford and needed somewhere for lunch. On entering the bottom end of the town The George Hotel's historic sign stretched right across the road - and there was a handy car park at the rear. So we entered this old coaching inn through the back entrance, making our way through a long festive courtyard covered with dozens of illuminated Christmas trees. On entering reception staff gave three different eating options but we chose The Garden Room which was almost filled to capacity with happy folk enjoying their lunch. They found us a nice table, despite not having booked. No lunchtime set menu but a very impressive full menu with something for everyone includes moulles, lobster and many other fine delicacies. One of the nicest lunches we have enjoyed in a long time. Full marks to the front of house, serving and kitchen staff for doing such an excellent job. Allow plenty of time to enjoy this experience. You will go a long way to beat it. The only downside was the bill of nearly £100 which included two glasses of spritzers.

This was our first visit in a while, as we had felt that the menu was getting too expensive for what it was. However, this visit made us rethink! Much of the enjoyment of dining at The Garden Room is the venue itself. This time, the portions were very generous, the plates were well presented, and the food was delicious. Ellie and the staff that served us were all extremely friendly, helpful and professional. You have restored the faith!

We had drinks at The George whilst staying locally and totally loved the building, the ambience and the staff . Looked at the Garden Room menu and decided to eat there the following evening . Yes, it is expensive but based on our experience having drinks and chatting to staff we anticipated a fantastic meal . What we got was very average, and very overpriced . Beef stroganoff, for me is hard to resist and I have eaten it many many times, usually with rice, and ALWAYS with mushrooms. Not here , not a mushroom in it, just a few bits of steak & served with tagliatelle. (£26) A side dish of “Heritage tomato salad “ (£6) was minus the described basil and comprised of extremely mushy over ripe, bordering on inedible tomatoes . Fish pie (£26) was very dry, & lacking any sauce really , served in a gratin dish with an afterthought of a few peas rolling loose around the plate . The other dishes served were just as unremarkable 4 people, 2 courses , and drinks averaged £90 per person and what we were served simply was not worth it

Visited today with a friend for lunch… live relatively local although not been before. Had a really pleasant all round experience.. warm welcome, faultless service & great food. We both chose the warm chicken salad, followed by the sherry trifle & tiramisu. Everything very tasty, in fact I gave it an overall mark of 10 out of 10, a rare occurrence for me! Thank you all for a lovely afternoon.

Usually we love this place, service is excellent, but maybe a little stuffy. Lobster pasta is good but when you ask for extra chilli, wanting that chilli hit, please don’t be shy with the chilli. Haven't eaten here for many years so poped in for lunch. I find it strange that there's no reception upon entry to the courtyard, you have to flag down a passing crew member to get a table. The menu is large with lots of tasty sounding dishes, across all food groups; vegaterian's are well catered for. I went for the beef-cheeks. Our food arrived is quick order and my beef was both tender and tasty. But it was only luke warm. By contrast, my wife's gnochhi was very hot and extremely tasty. All in all a nice lunch, but he price tag does not warrant the quality of the food or the standard of the serveice.

The George has always had a fantastic reputation but things are not as good as previously experienced. For lunch I ordered the crab salad and an Aperol Spritz. The samphire salad was nice but the dressed crab was over seasoned and extremely salty. It is always tricky complaining about food when you are in a party as from experience your food is whisked away and usually brought back once everyone else has finished meaning you end up dining alone! Although the crab was not very nice it was not inedible. I continued eating. I highly recommend the chunky chips as these were delicious. The spritz glass was only half full when the waiter arrived so assumed this was The George standard measure? I saw others being brought to other tables after mine was delivered and their glasses were full, so yes, mine was actually a short measure, but as I had drunk some already how could I prove this? Overall overpriced for a below average experience.

Has gone down hill. The setting is amazing and very nice staff. 10 of us went on a Saturday afternoon on the train as very close to the railway station. I had the £21 prawn cocktail that consisted of some uncut lettuce leaves an amount of very small prawns and a bland sauce, for main I went for the £32 very unexciting liver with mash cabbage a Bit of bacon and a jug of gravy. Have loved The George for years. Went for lunch the other day with husband and brother to celebrate a birthday. Had a pint of (murky) beer and vodka and tonic in the bar - £18!!! In the garden room, which is a lovely room for lunch, we asked for water at the table. The waiter removed our glasses then brought them back with luke-warm water in. In a decent place there would be a jug of iced water placed on the table. Husband and brother had fish and chips which was as good as ever and both really enjoyed it. I had minute steak with frites and bernaise sauce. The sauce was ALMOST warm, and congealed. Can’t go too far wrong with the steak and frites? Hmm - just about warm enough but very salty. It was a very disappointing plate of food. I would have complained but didn’t want to spoil the experience for the others and ruin my birthday.. Husband later said he feels The George is resting on its laurels. At over £100 for three lunches with one glass of wine and one dessert it certainly didn’t come up to scratch. From it being our ‘go to’ place, it is now a don’t waste your money. We won’t be returning.

On Saturday 11/5/24 we visited The George as we had heard so many good things about it. We found a table in the Garden Room and purchased two glasses of excellent Bordeaux and some olives and nuts. It was a lovely experience, so we decided to return on Sunday 12/5/24 - how different! Although there were tables free, we were told we couldn't have one just for drinks and we were directed to another garden, where there were no tables. We left disappointed and let down. We then went to the William Cecil and had excellent service and attention.

What a place!! I thought this restaurant was going to be very good, but it wasn’t, I asked for a £27 fish and chips and my sister had a steak £31, the fish was very big but no taste at all, it was very very oily just horrible, my sister steak was ok but over priced as it was so little. We asked for a glass of wine and the wine £14 a glass came with 2 drops in the glass, ot was ridiculous, and what was interesting was, I told the waitress that the food wasn’t good, it was very oily and he said “ I am sorry but there is nothing that I can do” really? And charged us full price for the food that we had just half? Well… I would never be back 🙌🏼 PS: I will post a picture of the little drop of wine for £14 😅 Thanks

We have had hit and miss experiences with the George over the years and the last time we went to the Green room we had food that had to be sent back and it was overpriced for what it was. Given there was limited options when we went last weekend we booked and got in the outside marquis in the garden. My wife was not expecting much but I must say, the environment, the service and the food was absolutely the best, and this was the best experience of the weekend hands down. Steven the Maitre D was brilliant and funny and not stuck up like some of the servers we have had in the past there. Thoroughly enjoyable and it has now given us a new vigour for visiting there everytime we go for drinks or food in the future, which we do in Stamford 4 or 5 times a year. We also went into the courtyard on Sunday for drinks. It was nice but freezing cold and there weren't any heaters so we went after one drink, though the service from Anotonina was very good.

Visited the George for lunch with my wife, we are both committed to a plant based diet. So we were limited in choice, but when I booked the table the lady assured me that they have a very good Vegan menu. The staff were very helpful and did everything to accommodate us. As an aperitif they gave us bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar instead of the usual butter. Followed by a starter that we shared of vine tomatoes and bruschetta. Which for us was more than enough, to satisfy our immediate hunger. Main course was possibly the best Vegan curry I have had Thai Yellow Vegetable Curry. The flavours were stunning with no one element dominating the dish. Again the portion size was good. We will definitely be making a booking again to try another Vegan dish from the menu.

One starter of french onion soup was ordered, it was delicious but chef must ensure he removes the outer tough onion skin as it’s unpleasantly chewy. The huge seafood platter with lobster was delicious and really for two, whereas I plodded through but couldn’t do it justice. It was amazing. My other half had the burger but found it too dry, alas he didn’t choose well as he had the onion soup and burger. Wines by the glass was excellent and we moved to the lounge for coffee and liqueur. We loved it. The service we received was first class - our waiter was friendly, polite and knowledgeable. The food was very good. I had the fish and chips (with choice of thick chips or fries) a large piece of haddock beautifully battered and fried to perfection (without that oily aftertaste). We also ordered the sirloin steak which was very good and the burger which was fair. The menu has a fantastic range of food options, a nice list of wines by the glass or the bottle and nice range of locals ales and lagers. Service polite, helpful and friendly both in the evening and at breakfast. The portion sizes were huge - especially the well cooked fish and chips. The crab and prawn fish smaller of the two portion options was quite sufficient and very fresh and tasty. House champagne eminently drinkable. Fresh warm bread but sadly butter rock hard. We were really disappointed to see portion sizes reduced yet again. As regular customers we have watched prices go up over the years, but that is to be expected. However, last time we visited the salad on the side of my meal had gone to be replaced with a few pea shoots. My side of French fries was in a bowl half the old size and it was only just over half full. At £5.60 they must be the most expensive chips in Stamford!I realise costs have to increase but I felt the 2 reductions in size was a bit of a rip off.

I know it was Christmas Eve(and this is not the first time we have been here then) but the wait this year was simply ridiculous, when we finally got to our table we had to ask 3 times for water, we had to wait 30mins from giving the order for the starter to receiving then, then another 45minutes before the main course, so by the time that came one of our 6 dinners had lost his appetite, the whole meal took around 2 hours. This is a very busy time of the year for The George and the food isn't really worth the price you pay, and the service certainly is not upto scratch. We are two couples living in different parts of the County, and as we all love jazz, we decided to buy tickets to the Jazz Evening & Dinner on 26th October. Imagine our horror when we were shown to a table in a room at the rear of the Main Room (where the jazz band perform). I simply could not believe it. We'd paid money to see a jazz band and were given a table where it was impossible to...see the jazz band. When I queried this, I was told that if I wanted a table in the Main Room, I should have specified this at the time of booking. I was also informed that regular attenders of the jazz evening (presumably locals?) do exactly this. What am I? A mindreader? And finally, I was told that the jazz band does indeed leave the 'stage' and walks through the rear room, playing a couple of tunes! I believe The George needs to be more honest and state at the time of booking, whether or not patrons will be able to SEE the jazz band, or be placed in another room with refrains floating through the open windows between the rooms. Current practice is misleading, and that's not on.

Many people had recommended the George main restaurant to us but it looked rather stuffy and the prices were eye wateringly high so we thought we would try this alternative. The staff were lovely and attentive and could not have been nicer but the food was terrible, pre cooked and flavourless. TO claim that this food has been prepared freshly by a chef on the premises is a joke. The food was straight out of 3663 or Brakes food lorry. I was so disappointed. At the prices you charge for dishes this is not what I would expect. The restaurant was full on the night we visited but we heard several people complain that their food was not what they expected and was simply tasteless. I would not recommend this place as somewhere to eat unless you like bland pre cooked food at high prices.

The George of Stamford is a real treat. I’ve had the pleasure of eating here a few times for lunch and dinner, it’s always good whether you’re a couple or larger party. The extensive menu and wine list in the Garden Room caters for all tastes.

The Garden room is a favourite for special occasions. The atmosphere is lovely, the service excellent and the food is great. It’s on the pricey side depending how many courses you have but a really enjoyable evening in a nice setting. Well worth a visit.

Lunch here is a truly wonderful experience. It was the first time we had eaten in the Garden Room having previously dined in the stunning Oak Panelled Restaurant. We have two small grandchildren and thought that everybody would be more at ease in a less formal environment. Having said that the Garden Room is still a beautifully decorated room with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were great. Smart, attentive, professional and when the meals arrived they were delivered with "enjoy your meal" and not the dreaded shortened "enjoy". The food itself was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection and having coffee in the lounge afterwards rounded off a perfect Sunday lunch. The menu is varied and I would thoroughly recommend the 10oz steak. It's not cheap but quality never is. As Arnie once said "I'll be back".

We visited this restaurant because we wanted to try the typical British menu of roasts and Yorkshire pudding, but it turned out this was only served in the high end Oak Room for which we were not properly dressed. So we had dinner in the Garden Restaurant instead, a nice courtyard al fresco place. Sadly it turned out that the food served in the oak Room two steps away, was not offered in the Garden Restaurant (whyyyyyy). So we had a large platter of seafood instead, which was a generous quantity but the quality was disappointing (some of the seafood obviously came out of the freezer). However, the historic venue is nice.

Renewed menu.Well presented fried fish and chips from east coast and Cromer craband Thai fish cakes Lovely place to lunch in the cool of the tropical plants surrounding the many but private tables. Opens at 12noon but cannot prebook. Very popular for good reason. Great for meeting friends, but not easily accessible as short stairs to enter, and other stairs within the hotel for facilities. Medium price ranges

We sat outside in the sunshine looking at the beautiful building and planting, ate wonderful food (our daughter had mussels, we had the grand seafood platter), drank refreshing high quality wine, beer and juice, were served by friendly professional staff and felt completely relaxed - it was like being on holiday. Perfect. Thank you to The George.

Having been a regular diner at The George of Stamford for almost 50 years I have always resisted the temptation to write a review. However, that changed following our last visit to The Garden Room restaurant a few days ago.

Thsi is a very popular restaurant in the famous George hotel. Bookings are not taken but if the room is full (which it often is, especially at w/es) diners are given an alarm which tells them when a table is available. The wait is usually short - just long enough for a pre-lunch drink at the bar. The menu serves a variety of salads, pasta, fish and meat mains. Vegetarians are not well catered for on the main menu but can order from a separate menu

Superb evening at the Garden Room in The George. Real effort has been made to create a lovely cosy and attractive restaurant. Service was first rate and food was exception. I had a Steak and Ale pie to die for and my wife was very happy with her Sea Bass. It’s not cheap, have a bottle of wine, dessert and coffees and it’s around about £100 a couple but everything is quality and it’s certsinly ideal for special occasions. 5 stars all round.

There is nothing negative to say about our meal last night in The Garden Room at The George. The welcome, service and food were all wonderful. You always hope that a visit to The George will be that much better than anywhere else in the area and we certainly weren't disappointed. The Restaurant Manager deserves a particular thank you - she was amazing but so were the rest of the staff. Thanks to you all for making my father in law's birthday extremely special.

We arrived for lunch in the Garden Room on Saint Valentines Day. Staff so welcoming, polite and efficient. We enjoyed a superb lunch in wonderful surroundings. This made Valentine’s Day really special so thank you to all the staff. I can recommend the lamb (it was so tender) followed by the George’s Sherry Trifle.

My husband and I dined in the Garden Room as a stopover on our UK road trip a week ago. Nestled in the heart of picturesque Stamford at the stately and historic George hotel, we entered a re-creation of a green oasis. Most of the menu was a mix of Italian and pub offerings. A special tapas menu was also offered, of which I took advantage in ordering smoked feta cheese, calf liver on bed of mash, and gnocchi with blue cheese and butternut squash purée. My husband had the steak and kidney pie. Our meals were excellent. We enjoyed the ambiance, resolving that we would return and include a stay at the hotel as well.

I came here with my wife for our anniversary. Inside the George Hotel there is a lovely feel to the place and it is very pleasing to the eye. The Garden Room restaurant itself was a sight to behold. It looked stunning in all its festive splendour. The menu is quite traditional and a tad on the expensive side but the food was very tasty. The staff were very attentive but they did seem slightly over staffed for the number of people dining. Definitely worth a visit.

Step back 150 years and be cosseted in coaching inn that has retained the special atmosphere of a place that absorbs travellers - whilst serving its locality with distinction. Undoubtedly some of the best and most authentic hospitality to be found in England - they make it seem so effortless - but perhaps it is after 1000 years.

Very disappointed today. I had steak and chips and sadly, it was tasteless and oily. My husband had the burger. Again, disappointing. These plus a bottle of water and cheese and biscuits for one and coffee for both of us came to £70+. Even the coffee tasted burnt and syrupy as though it had been kept hot for too long.

We only had breakfast in the Garden Room which we couldn't fault. The decor and the plants are quite something and if the price of dinner in the Oak dining room is outside your budget we would think an evening meal in here wouldn't disappoint.

Came here for a family lunch, with our grandson, aged 11 months. Good highchair provided. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Although the menu was similar if not the same as a few years ago, I had my favourite two items - the lobster spaghetti then the tiramisu. Both excellent. Atmosphere was lovely with the mirrors, lighting and plants adding to it. What would make it even better? Maybe a more varied menu, and the opportunity to reserve tables, so we know we can plan our day around the meal, rather than taking a chance. But can recommend this restaurant for something a bit special (as it's quite pricey) if you are in Stamford.

The food and the hospitality were great, the steak was to die for and I would have given it 5 stars, however having been shopping at Tesco and found out the bottle of wine we had was on sale at £8.50, to have been charged £38.00! was just too much over the top. It’s a shame as it has soured the experience.

A wide variety of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. If you like sport, there are televisions inside and out. Food is available Monday - Saturday: 12.00 - 15.00. Large beer garden. Always met with a smile by helpful and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

I came across this place by chance as there was no bar in the services I was staying in. I am glad I did, the food was great and reasonably priced. Same with the beer, all the staff were friendly and welcoming.

Sadly, The Rose has closed down, and is now all boarded up. There had been a "For Sale" notice last month, but even this has gone. From a local resident.
