The Ganges in North Devon

my meal was cold, i had to re heat everything and the lemon rice tasted awful like disinfectant and normally I love lemon rice, such a shame I love indian food, very disappointed 😞

sorry but lamb was cold amd Dahl was burnt. rest wad delicious

One of the best Indian Restaurants I have been too. The Lamb Biryani was sublime and the Naan Bread was fresh and fluffy.

Best place in the whole of North Devon for a curry. In the restaurant or take away its fantastic. Unique flavours and recipes compared to all the samey samey you see everywhere else. 10 / 10

Food was 50 mins late. Cold on arrival and curry had spilt/poppadoms crushed. Had sent request for compensation at 30 mins late but told “extra food included as compensation” but nothing on arrival. Called restaurant at 50 mins late and told to cancel order but 2 mins later arrived at door so I accepted the order but wish I hadn’t.

The food was fantastic! Punjabi Railway Lamb with Pilau rice, Naan bread and Poppadoms. It was late, but that was because of roadworks! 😎

Re. our takeaway. We ordered the wrong Afghan chicken. We had an old menu. There are now TWO available ( formerly only one). One Afghan is a chicken tikka (with onions and peppers) the other (the original one) is chicken in a lush masala sauce. Be warned, as we are not the only ones to get that confused apparently 🙄 All our other dishes were delicious and good sized.

Everything was cold and 3 items totally missing absolutely disastrous would not order again rang 3 times to get answers and was told on the way when it was on a jolly of north deacon, ordered 2 hours earlier to make sure it was on time

Food in terms of flavour especially the butter chicken was very nice, unfortunately some items were cold/barely warm upon arrival. Future orders may choose other options to see if it’s just those specific dishes that don’t hold temperature for long.

10/10 food and service! It's genuinely the best Indian food in Devon! Delicious fresh food that does also travel well if you decide to get a takeaway or delivery. Eaten there over 100 times and never had a less than perfect meal, I've become a regular and the friendly staff give my daughter a free naan and poppadoms when I bring her which is really nice of them. Good for a curry with the lads or a family experience!

Overall the meal was good and tasty. The food was warm enough, although it could always be more on the hot side. the chicken didn't seem to be the best quality but it was cooked properly. The rice was pretty good.

Pretty average Indian. There is a vegan selection. However, as a starter we were brought a dish with chicken and not vegetables. When we complained, the food was average. The service was very friendly.

Took 2 hours from ordering to delivery. Very limited menu, chicken tikka very strange, very disappointed.

Lots of love and care put into the food. Visited from London and haven't had a better curry than this. They even took care of my mum and her fussiness;)

Food was not upto standard, overpriced and not worth it at all. Everyones raves about the place but it was mediocore at best. The Afghan Chicken was dreadful! Will defo stick to Spice Of India in future.

Ordered food at 16:34 said it would be delivered between 17:20 and 17:40 actually turned up at 6:20 we’ve had this 3 times now from the same restaurant so will not be ordering from them again. Used to be very good so don’t know what’s happened. To add to that both our main dishes were cold. Wouldn’t mind if they communicated but just turned up over an hour late with no apology.

Don't expect 'Bangladeshi' food. This is an Indian restaurant without the nuances and dare I risk 'the refinements' 'Bangladeshi' food has brought to the genre. I will not list the failings but if you are an officiando of sub continent food you could well be disappointed

I ordered mild chicken tikka. What came, was topped up with youghurt. Result of my complaint; they washed it and brought it back. Food awful and terrible service. Bad expirence.

A truly excellent Vegan curry experience - great value, excellent service and wonderfully tasty. Some fantastic Vegan choices - so many in fact that we had a hard time choosing what to have - this is a rare treat and we savored it all. We didn't hold back, ordered everything we fancied and we were not disappointed. Staff were plentiful, polite and attentive - and the owner, I presume, took the time to come over and check we were ok. Very friendly. Simple, unpretentious and delicious. We really enjoyed ourselves - thank you.

After some time away from Gamgee's, we returned and were delighted to find that the chef was on top form! The portion sizes were generous, and everything tasted absolutely delicious. I highly recommend Gamgee's to anyone and look forward to returning in the future.

Visited with my friend. Food was all delicious. Lamb biryani was so flavoursome with tender lamb. My friend had butter chicken with basmati which she enjoyed very much. We shared onion bhaji which was clearly homemade. Popadoms and chutney selection before that. All food was great. Will be back.

We arrived and were welcomed 10 out of 10. There was a chap walking around who may have been chef or manager talking & interacting with customer, 10 out of 10. I requested something a little different , and this was not a problem to them at all and I really appreciated that 10 out of 10 again. We went two weeks ago and the experience was much better, however last night it was pretty poor. We had to ask for rice and things that were not brought out. There were 6 of us. One person had a hair in their curry. The service was very blunt, not friendly. Such a shame as two weeks it was better. Nice food, but really not good service. We won't be going again.

First time ordering from here, abit disappointed really- mint sauce was missing, egg rice was really salty & the Saag chicken was really watery - my plate literally had a water ring around my food, delivery was on time. Such a shame

Not really an Indian, you'll find non of your usual curries here. It's properly more of an Afghanistan restaurant. The food was nice and service was good. It just wasn't what I was expecting.

Spectacular! THE best Indian I know in the country. I don't give this praise lightly but I've eaten in many Indians all over the country and this is the best food and the best value. Nothing I could improve and I NEVER say that about a place.

Food was very good, but the service was slow . You could see that the take away side was very busy which obviously impacted on the in-house service. Nobody checked if our food was ok ‘and the interaction with the staff was non exisistant. It’s obvious from previous reviews there is a service problem.

4 friends for a curry night. Server was blunt. Not rude, but not friendly. However they were young, so I understand. Offered drinks and then popadoms and pickles etc. All were prompt and very tasty. Then to the mains. Again. Prompt, and the Jangle Lamb, Railways lamb, and Afghan Chicken were all fresh and tasty. The pilau rice was disappointing. Stodgy and clumpy. Not what you would expect. A second round of drinks ordered, but no space on the table. Food was stacked around the empties and it was all a bit cluttered. Overall the food was good. But the service a little lacking. We spent £150 odd, but felt once we’d finished we were being ushered out the door. I’ve used the takeaway many times. And still will. But I can’t see us going back to eat in any time soon.

Service is slow. No one asked how the food was. And it was pretty poor. Flabby rice. Ultra thin naan. Taka Dahl was so watery it was like a thin soup. All curry dishes we had seemed to be from the same brown base sauce. Poor food

Good food but a bit vague in catering for specific dietary requirements. They just need to be clearer as to which of the common allergens are in each dish. The menu is a welcome change to most curry house offerings. Probably would go again if I was in the area.

I have ordered the same curry from the Ganges for the past couple of years, the chitinad chicken, it’s always top notch fiery with heat and a thick tasty gravy, I ordered tonight at 1715 for a delivery for 1900, the curry arrived 30 minutes late and cold/luke warm so had to microwave it, the flavour was lacking, the chicken thing meat was stingy, they seemed to think that they could sprinkle a few green chilli’s over the top to try and recreate the previous flavours, this was my go to for a hot spicy tasty curry, I will now look somewhere else as this was a shambles

I ordered takeaway for delivery. The online ordering is useless and needs addressing as not the first time I've had problems with it but I just rang them. Took my order over phone, delivery was a bit longer than advised. But delivery driver was really courteous and the food was lovely! If you expect the usual insipid veg curry sauce with a biryani you'll be disappointed. But Ganges biryani is really good, well spiced and the lamb one I ordered was so succulent. Really nice food and excellent customer service, would recommend.

Amazing. The best Indian delivery we have had since using just eat. We did have to warm it up and put the naan in the air fryer but it’s New Year’s Eve and probably busy. Will absolutely use again !!!!’

We’ve been here a couple times now and I love it who doesn’t like a curry! Also I’m a vegan snd their menu is full of vegan dishes, the service is relaxed and not rushed snd we felt very welcome. Everything taste so fresh and we all really enjoyed it, we had poppodums to start and then into our mains I had the smoked aubergine dish and the mrs prawns very tasty and she really loved the prawns.

Good food, nice staff. The only criticism is that I don’t think the menu has a big enough selection compared to other Indian restaurants in the area so a bit limited for choice, although the food is lovely.

called the shop was told food was with driver. 20 mins later he shows up. just like last time food freezing and had to be microwaved. Not happy. :(

Food here is absolutely delicious. Glad we listened to local recommendations before visiting. Would definately recommended. We had large poppadoms and chutney tray. Bombay lamb, very tender mouth watering lamb with a kick. Chicken korma, delicious. Peshwari naan yum. xx

A regular haunt. Always a solid 7/10 - sometimes an 8. Menu choice could be slightly broader for regular visitors but what is on the menu is reliably good and consistent.

We wated well over an hour. All the food was cold poperdoms obviously cooked a few days ago very expensive compared to competitors and completely inferior never again

The Ganges is a little bit out of the way, but well worth the visit. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly from the moment we walked in the door. The food was tasty, plentiful and very good value for money. we would certainly visit again if we are ever back in the area.

Usually on the dot or even a bit early, 10 minutes either way isn't a problem though🙂

We got 2 takeaways during our weeks holiday. Collected it. About £90 for 8 of us so not bad.

Maybe an off night I visited due to reviews with my 97 year old father not much ambiance on arrival sat down requested 2 non alcoholic beers the girl said we have cobra or 1 beginning with H I said either she then came back said had none so ordered coke and apple juice (I requested pint of coke) but the apple juice came also in pint glass (that was dumped on table) my dad cannot lift a pint glass so had to get her to change made my order £3.95 for chutneys seemed steep so I said just mango chutney waited 20 minutes then girl returned saying are you ready for main course - they had not served popadoms or starter I said Assumingly you will serve starter first! The food was ok nothing special and bit greasy and the naan was poor (felt like oven cooked from Tesco) not fresh from a tandoor oven (not crispy etc) the girls did not wipe table and left the place settings for 4 (we were 2) so it just felt unorganized and not snappy like most new Indian restaurants manager did not check with us - the girl did ask if everything was ok but at that stage we really just wanted to finish and leave we left uninspired and would not return need to up their game.

We usually go to Ganges but wasn't impressed with this order. We didn't receive our chutney set for our poppadoms and the tarka dal wasn't as we usually have it. The food was luke warm so had to be reheated.

Our order was one hour late. This form does not let me say it was one hour late but it was just after 8pm when it arrived, we pre ordered at 4pm to arrive at 7pm, nobody told us it would be late and the restaurant should not allow pre orders if they are not able to fulfil them! The food was not worth £60 and our evening was ruined as it was so late. We also had items missing from our order - there was no peshwari naan and no chutney set. Very disappointed.

Brilliant meal . Owner was really friendly and helpful. Couldn't fault one meal .all perfect .my partner 16 year daughter and myself were very well looked after .Will 100% visit again when in the area

Just great, with a very good selection of vegetarian & vegan dishes under the heading of Hindu Kitchen. The staff were friendly and efficient & we all had an excellent meal.

I visited The Ganges with my partner and parents who were visiting from Hampshire. What a lovely evening! Despite being a full restaurant, we didn't have to wait too long for orders to be taken and food to come out. And speaking of the food... Wow! Delicious and brilliant to see so many vegan options including a vegan naan. This is the best Indian restaurant in Barnstaple and I would highly recommend. All the staff were friendly and made the effort to chat with us as they cleared our table. All dishes reasonably priced too.

Food was good as usual but the service was very poor, she didn't take our order correctly so not all our food came out and we had to keep waiting and waiting and going to the bar for drinks and the bill, the owner wasn't there and it really made a difference, normally very good service

Ordered for 7pm and turned up at 7.45. Would have been ok if the food was hot but it was very cold. The food itself was ok, the best bit was the chilli chips! Naan bread wasn’t nice, supposedly cheese and garlic and just tasted like stale garlic. Jungle lamb curry is listed as spicy, not a hint of spice to it at all. The lamb was melt in the mouth though! Overall very disappointing and won’t be rushing back. The delivery driver was very polite though and couldn’t apologise enough!
