The Galloway in Dumfries & Galloway

Have had a caravan in portpatrick for a number of years and visited the Galloway often. Have recently eaten there a couple of times in last few months. The food and the standard of service have been great, big enough menu, plenty of choice. Food has been really good and portions sizes relatively large for a reasonable price. Might be advisable to book as can be quite busy in caravan season.

Food in hear was really good but disappointed at time we had leave 9.30 ! felt u welcomed as it nearerd this time asbar staff had there finishing time in sight,I understand mid week closing to be early but Friday Saturday's in the hight of summer.

A friendly welcome, with proper no nonsense food! We were so pleased to find this place as we were struggling to find a decent pub meal around Port Patrick, and one that has veggie options as well! Highly recommended!

Booked a table for family dinner went in for a drink at 5 o’clock went out to sit outside it was a nice evening asked the staff about table I was told yes we have table two went in at 6 o’clock to sit at the table told by staff we were not going to be at table 2 they were going to give us a different table was highly table was not suitable for us my wife has a bad hip can not sit on a high chair and grandson very disappointed with the staff changed the table not very happy so we just left the restaurant we will not be back to the restaurant disappointed about the staff for doing this wee grandson was looking forward for dinner at this restaurant been there lots of times we really enjoyed the food there and staff were very nice and food great bad experience this time definitely not be back

Terrible service, slow and waitress verging on rude. Had the driest cheese and ham toastier I’ve ever not eaten, it was revolting. Why can they never serve teas and coffees with the food, not half an hour before you get t your meal.I’ve been before to eat and the service is always slow but on this occassion we had to wait nearly an hour, when the food did arrive, the toast was stone cold, the bacon tasted as it had been cooking for a fortnight and part of the order not served at all. Really terrible experience, why is theservice so slow. . The food could be delicious but it’s never I’d, think the staff need to up their game. If you are reading this review, goto the crown in Portpatrick and save yourself having yo dreadful experience

Enjoyed a lovely meal with my sisters. Delicious pasta and sweet potato fries. Lovely helpful staff.

I would equate this to worse than a Wetherspoons, we walked here from our caravan to enjoy a ‘pub grub’ dinner. The chicken burger was a processed chicken nugget on a bun. At £11.99 I was thoroughly unimpressed. The staff were pleasant enough, but very young and uninterested in the dining quality. Ann Over priced McDonald’s in my opinion.

While staying at the Caravan park across the road we called over to see if they were open amd if they allowed dogs, they said dogs were only allowed on the outside not inside.we decided not to go as it was so cold amd windy.in this day and age I would have thought they would have a eating area in the bar area where you could take your dog and have a few drinks..Theywould certainly make more money as we would have spent atleast £50..

We walked up for some food while staying in Portpatrick for the weekend. We booked ahead. Service for a table of 11 was great, the welcome was lovely from the two younger girls working, and drinks were all delivered quickly The food in my / our opinion was really good, menu range was good and most meals came with nice freshly cooked home style chips. We had one tiny issue with one meal for one of the kids and it was dealt with perfectly. We then sat out and had drinks on the front terrace which was lovely, with a nice little play area for the young ones. Costs of the food were all very reasonable Thanks again

Love the breakfasts here, but the evening* meals leave me unimpressed. Slow service, food sometimes cold. Really can recommend ( except for the Full Scottish.

My sis and I were staying at the caravan park across the road and decided to go for Sunday lunch. What a letdown. The service was slow - we waited 25mins for our food. When it did come It was so disappointing. Roast chicken was just a chicken portion - not from a roast chicken - with gravy made from a packet - bland with no seasoning. Roast potatoes were still frozen in the middle and portion of mash could have fit in an egg cup. A stingy serving of watery broccoli and a small portion of carrots were also on the plate. All in all very below average. The bar area is lacking in ambience but the outside seating area is very nice.

We walked over to The Galloway to be warmly welcomed by the lady behind the bar. The beer was cold and served with a smile. We ordered our meal all made from fresh and it was served by a happy young waitress, as soon as we finished our starters our table was cleared and our main course arrived. All the food was cooked well, served nicely and tasted great. Sadly we had no room left for dessert. Would definitely recommend.

As the price was so expensive we thought we were in for something special and were looking forward to our fish and chips. How disappointed we were. The batter was thick and slimy and not fully cooked. The fish was small and tasteless and the little portion of chips were terrible. A total waste of money.

Was staying close by and had lunch here. It was so nice, clean and friendly atmosphere. Staff were really nice and meal was lovely, would definitely return when back in the area.

Popped in for a light bite and drinks. Scorching day and we sat outside in the sun. Expansive area outside and inside covid rules clearly signposted. Nothing fancy but does what it says on the tin, and with a smile.

We enjoyed a tasty, well presented meal here at The Galloway. A very varied menu, I would say you could eat from breakfast through to evening meal at reasonable prices. The bar and restaurant are modern and spotlessly clean. A pint of Bellhaven and a half of shandy. The staff were efficient and very friendly.

We visited on Fri 18.06.21, having booked a few days earlier. The pub diner is set on a hill, on the edge of a well organized caravan park. The views are magnificent from outside, where we sat, on a superb summers' evening. Service was excellent, friendly and fairly rapid. Good choice of mains and sweets. Very reasonable prices, the best value for a few days. The Galloway isn't pretentious, it's a good, honest pub, with decent food and very good staff, who know their trade. They advised me on the choice of beer and cider available, and they were right. Enjoy!!

Just had the Cajun Chicken... so tasty Tremendous service and an excellent attitude to cleanliness and lessening the risk of Covid. Great pint offerings too :)

We have been coming here since it opened as we have a caravan close by which we stay in every few months. The food has always been good but I'm assuming they have a new chef, we ate there 3 times in the last few...

We stopped at a caravan site very close, the food was very nice also the staff were very friendly and don't cost the earth.

Read really good reviews on this place so thought we’d try it out for Sunday lunch, really wish we hadn’t eaten here! No idea how it got good reviews as I wouldn’t feed it to the dog. Sunday lunch comprised of 3 slices over cooked...

If you're at one of the caravan/camping sites in Portpatrick this will probably be your closest bar/restaurant - it's a good bit out of the town. Luckily then it's a great place to eat and drink. A large group of us popped in for lunch...

I have been here many times and the last couple of times it's went down hill, the last time I put it down to it being really busy but this time it was my child's meal that was disappointing he had the children's chick goujons...

Good value for money food. Much cheaper than local restaurants in Portpatrick. Large portions, friendly staff, modern bright interior. Indoors not dog friendly.

Great selection of food on the new menu. There was 6 in out party and every dish was superb. Reasonable prices and great service. Regularly visit Stranraer and will definitely be back.

We visited here one evening whilst staying at Galloway Point which is opposite. We were with children. The staff were incredibly friendly and food was delicious. Can't fault the service.

Staying in Portpatrick we decided to venture out and found The Galloway online and thought we would give it a try. Portpatrick is expensive for food and drink so it was a nice surprise to see the prices here were a bit more reasonable. However...

Great food and gigantic portions,the food was very tasty and had a good selection also the staff were very friendly and prompt at serving.

WE had two meals there luch and an evening meal. The staff were great, the food was plentiful and the prices were really good

Oh my goodness, where do I start. We stayed nearby and this little place was very handy so we ate here twice. Their strong point is their consistency, they are consistently terrible.

Slow service for a rushed undercooked meal. After waiting over an hour for main, received pink chicken sizzler that clearly hadn't been cooked and burnt veggie burger; followed by an argument when we complained!! Head chef claimed it was clearly cooked and it was "sauce" we were seeing when we showed him the photo. Apparently he phoned manager who put up huge debate, refusing to take a £12 sizzler off the bill!! A pity as we have eaten there before and the food was fine. All in a really poor experience.

We popped in for our last meal after a long weekend staying at the caravan park across the road. We were a bit wary after reading some of the reviews on here, but we needn’t have worried. Excellent freshly cooked food, a great selection on the kids menu and very friendly staff who made us all feel welcome. Highly recommended as a great quality, good value option.

Had a lovely meal with a good choice for the coeliac. Kitchen were very accommodating adapting menu to suit. Service excellent

We are staying at the caravan site across the road. The day we arrived we went here in the early evening for a drink, sat outside, very pleasant.

Had a few meals here as we were staying accross the road at the campsite, also take away a few times, big portions of delicious, tasty food and uber friendly staff. Read some negative reviews and I suppose some people are hard to please! Well worth a visit! Lovely!

Stayed at a friend's home across the road and thought we would try it for dinner as the afternoon cappuccino was above average and lass behind the bar very pleasant. Tried to order the duck breast and when I asked for the skin to be crispy was informed that they no longer did duck. Instead my wife had deep frozen breaded shrimp which was overdone and dark brown and I had a sizzler (are they coming back after 50 years) of chicken which wasn't a culinary triumph but not bad although the pepper sauce needed help.

A pub in the middle of rural Scotland, opposite a family caravan site with loads of dog owning families that's not dog friendly. What's that all about ?

Me and wife where staying in the caravan park over the road decided to go to the Galloway for dinner I had a plain burger which was ok but the small amount of chips you get where grease.

Visited for dinner with my boyfriend and his parents yesterday and we all loved the food.

Lovely food, great friendly staff and a reasonable price in a lovely setting. Their rendition of "happy birthday" was second to none (voices of angels)

Waren mehrfach hier für ein Bier und einen Schwatz mit den anderen Besuchern. Haben uns sehr gut gefühlt und waren als Deutsche ein bisschen exotisch.

We spent a week in early July in the "Port" and visited the Galloway on a number of occasions.

My husband and I went for dinner with our son on Saturday evening, service was excellent staff could not have been any nicer and accommodating, food was delicious and portion size was very generous, the price was very good aswell, we will be back in a couple of weeks and will definitely be coming back here for dinner

Our first visit to The Galloway for food since it was revamped.

Visited twice last week as we were on holiday in Port Patrick. The quality of the food was excellent, the staff were very welcoming and friendly. there is a play are out the front for kids to play, which is all enclosed so very safe. we took the dogs and sat at the outside tables. Would certainly recommend a visit, I will definitely be back.

The Galloway is a great new addition the eating out places in 'The Port'.

Got the steak pie could not fault it beautiful it was. Service was first class. I will return with the grand kids next week

Went for lunch with friends and it was brilliant. Fiona . Who does all the cooking was friendly and helpful. We sat outside with the dogs and water was available for them. There is a nice playground for the kids. And the meals were Large .thank you fiona for some lovely food. Mary and ian

I just don't understand all these negative reviews about dogs not being allowed in!! This is standard practice in any restaurant so why should The Galloway be any different?? There's a lovely decking/grass area outside where dogs can run around and play and this is something thats very hard to find in pubs/restaurants! Well done The Galloway, great food, lovely staff, very clean and I'm looking forward to bringing my new puppy to the beer garden in a few weeks.

We were staying at the caravan park across from this restaurant. It does look like its part of the holiday park but it isn't. Anyway, we enjoyed a nice lunch here. Quick service, friendly staff, good sized portions and reasonably priced. There is a nice verandah at the entrance to the restaurant with wooden tables and seats if you prefer to eat outside and enjoy the view. If we are ever down that way again, we would definitely pay another visit to this restaurant.

We have eaten here before and always found it really good, portions are a bit big (not a complaint) but really could do with less on the plates so the girls have less of a struggle carrying things! Its a good family place and handy for anyone staying in the surrounding caravan sites. Less expensive than some of the establishments within the village but maybe not quite as tasty, a more modern less homely feel to it, but it is nice.

Perhaps I'm out of sync with the world!

We lunch out most Sundays,the Galloway was recommended to us so thought we would give it a try.

We will definitely be returning guests. Food was beautiful, big portions. Staff very friendly. Prices are good. Will be lovely in the summer sitting outside enjoying the sunshine.

Went in not expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. Food was great facilities were clean and well kept. Staff were nice and efficient. Best of all the food was cheaply priced and very affordable

After seeing this place recommended on facebook decided to give it a try today and i'm so glad we did. Its absolutely spotless and pleasant waitress..the food was absolutely gorgeous and very reasonably priced. Will defo visit again

Visited The Galloway a few weeks ago. Empty when we went in and were seated under a TV with Football on. The bored looking Teenage Waitress then turned the music off and turned the volume right up on the TV so that she could hear it at the Bar and we couldn't hear ourselves think. We were also sat next to a rear Door that various Staff Members spent a lot of time going in and out of. Bored Waitress then took our order and brought us fairly ordinary Food, it wasn't has good as we'd heard it was.

Me and my friend found this place on Facebook, having lived in the area all our lives and never knowing about it. It does lovely afternoon teas, home baking, pub lunches and dinners, has a pool table and telly and full bar. Waiting staff, early bird, Christmas and normal menus. Comfortable seating, good quality food at affordable prices. Comfortable atmosphere to drink in, close to caravan sites. Friendly service.
