Sorry this review is late but can I say we stopped off to watch the play off final( national league England) and we were made to feel so welcome by the lad behind the bar whose name I'm embarrassed to say I cant remember. I must say the locals on the day were fabulous and were fellow Poolies by the end! As far as the place itself it's a proper pub, clean ,good beer good craic and very very freindly atmosphere if ever we go back over that way it will definitely be a place to visit

We were given a friendly welcome at this dog friendly pub and restaurant. There was quite a lot of choice on the menu and the food was tasty. Don't expect clean table cloths, but your pooch will be given a bowl of water and plenty of biscuits.

A little shabby in places, we were pleasantly surprised by our meal (haddock mornay from the 'specials'.) I requested more veg and less potatoes, and the veg was generous and not overcooked, which was great. Quite a bargain too. The place was very busy and obviously popular with locals.

The bar area where we were asked to sit was freezing . in saying that it had only just opened as it was just turned 5pm and we were the only ones there. On the night we went it was a curry night with a choice of different curries on the menu . Nothing special about the food but plenty of it I personally was a bit disappointed as in my opinion the curry sauce came from a jar from the local supermarket which was a big let down as we had haggis balls for starters and they were delicious as the batter was so light and crispy

My daughter, husband and I were staying for the weekend at Conifer Lodges and came across this place as it was reasonably close by. Warm and inviting with a friendly member of staff. The menu looked delicious and I struggled to choose! I got Rabbies Ballast....,actually best meal ever! It was so delicious! I need to get the recipe! My husband got the steak pie and was going on about how delicious it was...until he tasted mine. We also loved how there was information on the history of the building and links of Rabbie Burns all around. A lovely warm, homely place that is more than a pub dinner at very affordable prices with various offers like kids eat free etc

We arrived in Newton Stewart without any reservations on a cold, wet evening. Looking for somewhere to stay, we came across this 'hotel' which advertised rooms but in fact no longer took in overnight guests which was disappointing. Not having eaten and being strangers in the area, we decided to eat in the bar and what a great decision that was. My steak pie was one of the best I have eaten and the desserts were just out of this world if you crave traditional puddings.....we had Spotted Dick with Custard, Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard and my Syrup Sponge and Custard. The food really was excellent, good value and generous portion sizes. The staff were friendly and the service good. On the way to the toilets we saw into the kitchen which was spotless, always a good sign! The place itself was looking a little tired but in some way that added to its charm. We will return to try something else next time!

My other half asked the bar man on Friday night, the 24th February if they were dog friendly, I did see on my google search it was but just like to check this out, the barman said well, it is ok through the day to bring a dog in but not at night as it gets too busy, at this point the bar was completely empty! On our way back along the street two hours later the bar was still completely empty! So really this place is not dog friendly! When we have eaten here before we have always been in the bar, which is full of atmosphere even when not busy. This time we were shown into the dining room, which has no atmosphere at all, even though there are lots of whisky bottles on display, and even when more people came in. We were on our way back from NI on a Sunday evening and were booked to stay at the Kiloran B&B (Good place to stay) but needed to eat. Being Sunday night we were not very hopeful of finding somewhere open. We drove into Newton Stewart and ended up parking right outside the door of the Galloway Arms. There was a restaurant room on the left which was empty, (Not a good sign) so we went into the bar/lounge on the right. This was quite busy and had a good atmosphere to it. The menu was quite informative about the history of the place with some amusing anecdotes. I ordered Fish & Chips. Wow, what a surprise. I was brought up in a Fish & Chip shop and know a thing or two about batter and have had some relly bad experiences. Not here though. This was without doubt the best pub batter i have ever tasted. Stopped off at the Galloway Arms after spending the day near Newton Stewart. As others have mentioned, the outside is a little deceiving as it does look slightly run down and may put people off when passing. But don't let the outside of the building put you off.We called in around 18:00 mid week and was greeted by friendly staff and a lovely bar inside (as it was a little quite this early, we didn't sit in the main restaurant side opting to sit in the bar area.Great selection on the menu and we both opted for the local beef burger, topped off with a thick slice of well cooked and tasty back bacon and grated cheese. Each also came with 6 onion rings. The burger was tasty and you could tell it was locally sourced, well cooked and served in an informal but welcoming bar and pub.Pity we were only passing through on our way back to the cottage, as they also had a really well stocked bar of many single malts that I would have loved to have tried but I was driving and we were about 30 miles away.Left around 19:30 and the bar area was full with diners and the seated restaurant was also filling up.Highly recommended and if I ever find myself up in the area again? then would call back to have another one of those great burgers.Maybe even stop for a drink or two as well.

What a find this place was. Tinned 'Farmhouse' Pate, Salad with no Dressing & 3 Oatcakes for Starter. Hmmm.... A Wine List so extensive it ranged from New World to Australian. Main Course for me was slices of Beef smothered in a 'Whisky' sauce which by the time it reached the table had formed a skin on top - nice touch. Never tried Bladnoch Whisky before but must say I was intrigued by the total lack of Whisky taste in the sauce. Vegetables done that traditional boiled to perfection if you like that 80's Pub Grub stylee.Very, very nice touch in that all of 'Mein Host's' questions about the wine were directed at me even though it was clear that it was the woman at the table who was going to drink it...What can I say? A truly unforgettable experience and as Eric Morecombe would say "I shall certainly tell my friends"

We both had Haddock and Chips and thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a great chat with Gordon, the owner, which rounded off a really good night. Everyone around was thoroughly enjoying their meals. Gordon was a wonderful source of local knowledge and is passionate about his business. My only small comment would be that I think the tartare sauce was not home made. Make it perfect and make your own.

From the outside, the Galloway Arms looks a little tired, but don't be deceived. Peruse the menu and you soon discover that this is no standard "pub grub" place, but where good food is expertly cooked by someone who cares about food. I had the seafood cocktail and sea bass with smoked salmon - a truly delightful meal. When we dropped in to check, we were told that my dog would be welcome in the bar area (where food is also served), but in the end we left her at home!

Visited the Galloway Arms last night for a meal. Had read the reviews on here and being on holiday didn't know where to try. So glad we decided on here. Food was fantastic, absolutely delicious. The chap behind the bar was fair chatty and we had a good natter about Whisky!! We had our son (3yrs) with us and he was made feel very welcome too. Can defiantly recommend eating here or even just a wee drink at the more than adequately stocked bar. It's a thumbs up from me.

We were recommended to eat here by the landlady at the stables guest house. The food was excellent and service quick especially considering we were a group of eleven. We did try the cree hotel but their service was nowhere near as good. Would definitely eat here again.

After travelling all day to get up to Newton Stewart, we were absolutely starved and needed to have a good full meal. We stopped at the Galloway Arms and were instantly impressed with the decor and how the room felt, burning fireplace, ambient lighting and nice sized tables with comfy seating. The food is brilliantly priced for the quality and tastes absolutely amazing with everything being locally sourced which you would expect (although if you like your steak rare-medium then you are warned it won't come out that way). The bar staff are more than helpful and really welcoming, in particular there was one gentleman who spoke to us for a while about the stars and history of Newton Stewart without being too forward - he was extremely helpful and made me and my partner both feel at ease.Would definitely visit again if I was in Newton Stewart!!!

This place was brilliant! The staff... wow! They certainly know their onions. My partner and I visited Newton Stewart while we were staying over to visit the Galloway Forest Park and this place was suggested by the lovely lady who owned the B&B. She was absolutely right to recommend here. Food was great, staff even better. They have a HUGE selection of Whiskies, some they're not even allowed to open (except for, I assume, royalty)!

Excellent food, Nachos are the best we have had! Superb roast beef, lovely and tender. Lamb shank with minted gravy was also very good. Lovely fresh vegetables, such a shame we couldn't manage dessert.Well worth a visit.

Food was of a high standard and good size portions, pleasant service and good value for money. This is a very old pub, reputed to be haunted! Hence the pub is very unique because of its age and makes for an atmospheric dining and drinking experience. There is a very extensive whiskey range, if you enjoy a whiskey you will be spoilt for choice here. The owners collect whiskey and have a rare expensive collection on display in secure cabinets which is very interesting.we have been here a few ties in the last 2 years when visiting family and the bar manager remembers us every time. Next door to the pub they have a sports bar, offering a very different experience from the pub side, you can watch sport on the TV, play Poole, and enjoy a casual drink with the locals.

Awful...avoid. You can tell the owner has lost interest. Carpets coming away on stairs, fraid carpets in bedroom, hole in bedroom wall, tiny tv, bedding dirty, everything dated and feels dirty. Only decent thing was breakfast...do not book unless desperate.

Breakfast seemed a fair price, but on arrival left a bit to be desired. Grilled tomatoes were warmed only and the sausage was small considering it was the only one on the plate.

My wife and I buy from this establishment on a regular basis and find them hard to beat, the quality of their products are second to none. Well done to all concerned
