The Galleon has recently been taken over and is now The Driftwood Inn. I’m local but have been working away recently. The Galleon was one of those places that many seemed to have tried to make work, but most seemed to have failed. It has again recently changed hands and I have to say I think at last it’s in the hands of people who will finally do this fine old inn justice. My partner and I went over for a bite to eat last night and, considering they’re only getting up to speed with kitchen facilities, the meal we had was absolutely delicious. I really feel this bodes well at long last for this ‘sleeper’ pub. We had a chat with the new owner whilst out in the beer garden and it sounds like it’s going to really be stepping up further with the food. I completely recommend this inn. The owners have realistic ambition to make this a place people will want to come to. It’s a beautiful old building, hundreds of years old. It deserves the right people to run it, and I think, after years of false starts, it might finally have that. Don’t be put off by the current smaller menu, the food is cracking.

Really disappointing stay I took my wife away for our anniversary, we where shown to our room asked if we wanted a quiet room we said yes of course and after the very poor quality door was shut we could hear every noise from the bar below it was only 5.30pm and they where holding karaoke that evening after an early start morning at 5am and a long day walking and swimming with an early start on the Sunday we felt we couldn’t risk not sleeping which would no doubt have been the case . We have emailed the landlord and given him a chance to refund but have heard nothing so am posting this review as really don’t want anyone else to have to go through our experience fortunately we got into a premier inn but it was a very expensive way of spending a Saturday night. Too add the room was definitely not worth the £120 it was advertised for, with no mention that it’s above a bar!!!

Just had a one night stay with a friend whilst sorting out some business. Arriving early evening it was apparent that the people who were working there must have been having a bad day. A higher rating would have been easy to obtain by being more welcoming and the room not having so many broken or damaged items (no bathroom door latch not lock, curtains hanging off, broken wardrobe door). The room was clean enough but added to the lack of other basics you would expect from accommodation like this it just let's the place down. If the website photos were replaced with the current condition of the accommodation you might have second thoughts. It's a shame it could be so much better.

Booked this hotel some weeks ago as it stated on the website that the hotel was pet friendly. I got an email days before departure advising me that the hotel wasn’t pet friendly and that I should cancel my booking. They could have let me know weeks ago. I emailed them and as yet I haven’t had a reply back and have booked somewhere nicer somewhere else. I would have not booked this place if it wasn’t dog friendly as it looks like a bit of a dump and not up to the standard I’m used to. I’d already made the decision to eat elsewhere as it’s all fried rubbish on their menu. A badly managed dated hell hole! You actually did me a favour!

My partner, myself and my dog enjoyed our stay very much so. It was so much nicer than expected and the land lady was so welcoming to us all. There was no issue with having our dog what so ever. We had a cooked breakfast every morning but they're were more options available and Fresh coffee and orange juice. We don't drive so for us this place was ideal being close to the train station and buses. There was a field less than 5 minutes away that we took our dog to every morning and evening and a local shop that did takeaway coffee which we love. Just wish we could have left a tip and had the chance to enjoy the bar but we were off an on the train every day to different locations. The room was nice and had an en-suite. My partner has already mentioned going again so he's happy to. It very felt very private but you knew someone was always there if needed. It has been very peaceful and relaxing.

Was so pleasantly surprised, we thought for £45 for 2 of us with breakfast included,it would probably be OKAY, but that was underestimating this place. The place is so warm and inviting, the staff are polite and really can't do enough to make you feel welcome, landlady has that(just the Wright amount of)friendliness you need, all are very approachable. It was so clean, to the point of I litterely couldn't find dust, lol, and I honestly tried. The pictures don't do it justice though, it's better than all the other budget hotel we have stayed in,and to be honest I don't think "budget"is the category for this place, I invite anyone to see it differently, it's refreshing to be somewhere in our price range that's so nice..Starcross is a sleepy little fishing village, that almost feels like it's lost in time it has it's own identity and I hope it never changes, I hope the same for this pub,I can say with my hand on my heart you would love it here.We will deffinatly be back.Lastly the breakfast was ever so good, proper sausages eggs bacon ECT,fresh fruit, cereals jams marmalade and marmite! Tea &coffee juice.Such a wonderful end to a very pleasant stay.Kind regards and Thankyou, from Tom and Rachel.

Booked 2 nights as my camping trip was washed out due to bad weather. Needed somewhere cheap and handy, this filled both requirements. Single room so not expecting much. Shower ok but very small. Cleanish, but by no means spotless. Breakfast poor, 2 slices of cold toast and a bowl of cereal. Second night entertainment consisted of people managing it having a right loud argument re what time they got up. I guess for price and location it was ok. BTW beer in bar was flat, drank at the other pub up the road, as food was available at the other pub, which it wasnt at Galleon.

We arrived after a long, damp walk and were one of only 2 couples in the bar. We ordered food which came and was very nice but the new landlady (her second day if I remember) was clearly overwhelmed with what she had taken on, including apparently, fully booked bedrooms for the forthcoming two weekends. Having read some of the reviews, it seems she was not at all prepared(!) although the only thing she couldn't provide for us was a pepper mill and a latte.

I rolled into Starcross after a hot 17 miles on the South West Coast Path in desperate need of food and drink. All I'd had through the day was a piece of flapjack and a Mr Kipling Bakewell Tart. Needless to say, I was starving and ready to eat a scabby dog. Despite the kitchen being closed, the staff were fantastic and rustled me up a delicious ham baguette and chips. It was much tastier than a dodgy dalmation. The food was tasty, the beer was good, the sun terrace was the perfect place to relax before my train home and, most importantly for a woman, the toilets were clean and had toilet roll. When I pick up the Path at this section I will be definitely staying in the accomodation here if it is available and turning up for the roast dinner! Thanks for a lovely afternoon.

While outside may look disappointing due to the passing traffic, inside is something of a gem. There’s a cafe/coffee shop, a large traditional bar with a small garden – and for good measure a Post Office! The cafe area is bright and colourful with reasonably priced cakes and snacks. There’s a typical bar-restaurant menu in the evenings and Sunday lunchtimes. It’s not far from Star Cross Railway Station and the ferry landing stage for Exmouth. So somewhere to pass the time and any time of the day.
