The Gait Inn in York

Excellent gluten free fish and chips last night as usual, Big gf yorkie pud next time I reckon 🙂

Had lunch out here a couple of weeks ago, the journey there was so lovely we wish we'd brought our walking boots to explore the area a little more. Parking was good. Good choice of seating areas. We ordered lunch, my hubster had chicken goujons which looked delicious with a perfectly crisp batter and apparently tasted scummy too. The GF onion rings were yum with perfectly light crispy batter. I ordered the GF fish and chips which were honestly disappointing to look at as not a whole piece of fish as expected but came as 2 strips, the batter was pale, heavy, uninteresting and flat! The batter was definitely not the best but the fish itself was nice. The chips and peas were just yummy. I also ordered the GF dessert of sticky toffee pudding which I can say was the best. Of course as usual, I didn't want to say anything or complain as if I did then my hubster would be eating lunch on his own until mine was prepped and served! The staff were absolutely great, couldn't have been more lovely, We will probably visit again and give the GF option a second chance, as family who are also GF have visited and shown us pics of their GF fish n chips which looked so delicious...fingers crossed next time 😊

Steak pie was not good at all. We went on a week night and all three of us were very dissapointed. On reflection I wish I had returned my meal. Eating out is expensive to be served food below expectation. However Sunday lunch some weeks earlier was delicious

This is our 2nd visit to here we went for Christmas Eve Dinner well what can I say if I could give this place 10 stars I would. The food was hot amazing and so delicious all the staff worked so hard to make our evening so special we had a fantastic evening thank you so much to our waitress Georgina who was fantastic with us I been in York for 7 years and never knew about this little gem of a pub and village till this year existed now I will be making regular trips here. TBH the meal I had tonight was one of the best Christmas Dinners I have ever had out. Please visit here you will not be disappointed

Perfect start to the Christmas season with Fine Fayre and Friends at this wonderful pub. Superb house cooked food served promptly and with a smile. We're all returning in February as a group, looking forward to our visit already!

Great food and atmosphere. The perfect country pub.

Dropped in and had a lovely welcome, a table was soon sorted for us in the restaurant and our menu choices taken. Service was great as was the lunch, only slight complaint was the Lamb was over cooked. Everything else was perfect and exceptional value.

Since we were in a large group at lunchtime we were place in the larger room away from the bar which was fine. Service was good and efficient. Menu choice was good and there was vegetarian choices too. There was also sandwich choices. Beer was excellent. Always happy to go to the Gait Inn

What a fortunate village to have such a place!

We absolutely love this place, running a business at home. We love to escape to The Gait Inn on a Saturday or Sunday to recharge and unwind. We get this and more here. Summer or winter, the pub is so pretty and inviting, especially on those cold winter days. The log burners are a true welcome. Thank you from the Long family!

Had a beautiful Sunday lunch here today. Generous serving of lovely tender beef and fresh cooked veg were delicious with plenty of tasty gravy Very pleasant staff looked after us. Great value - I would highly recommend. Will definitely return.

Love the food here, the steak pie is an evolution on Stuart's legendary pie, and delicious for it. The pub is a firm local favourite, good selection of beers too.

This is our usual for Sunday dinner as we walk from Pock. Staff are terrific, great selection of beers and the food is fantastic. There's nothing better after sunday dinner than to sit back and relax in the big beer garden and gaze up at Whinny Hill!

Visited this lovely little pub on a recommendation and found the food excellent and the black sheep beer was the same . What a lovely place tooled away .

The Gait Inn was recommended to us by two [separate] people so we went for Sunday lunch with high expectations. It is definitely popular. The surroundings are lovely and the staff were very welcoming and efficient. But the Sunday lunch was quite disappointing. All of us had to add salt [something I never do normally] to get flavour. The Yorkshire puddings were overcooked and chewy. There were not enough vegetables. The cost [£12] is very appealing but one felt it was cooked to a budget. Decidedly average and, sadly, disappointing. I doubt we will return, but if we do .............. please would someone make sure they have cleaned the toilets, thoroughly, before opening the pub? The mirror, especially, hasn't been cleaned in a goodly while.

The Kindling Club visited last night and were treated to a superb evening by the owners and staff of this great pub in the Wolds. The Beer and food were superb and the staff could not do anymore to make a lovely sociable evening.

Good food at a reasonable price....great service..will be going again Have been numerous times since and never disappointed. Great good quality and tasting food at a very reasonable price...what's not to like! Also lovely beer garden for those warm sunny days

Had a great lunch with friends for my hubby's 60th birthday.. superb food ' services. Great place, love it & great beer garden.. plenty of outdoor space to sit too.

We eat out regularly and at least once a month in the Pocklington area. Having eaten several times at the Gait Inn, we booked again in August. My husbands scampi was fine even if not great but my meal was dreadful. I'd ordered a beef and potato pie but what I got was what looked like stewing steak- no potato with a pastry top. The meat was tough and bitter and the pieces varied from very, very hot to lukewarm- in my experience the sort of result you get from a microwave. I ate less than a quarter of the whole meal and refused to pay. The young waitress was very pleasant and asked if I wanted to speak to the chef- I didn't see the point and declined. Such a pity that we don't feel able to return as we like to support local business. Whether it's the cost of living that's resulting in poorer ingredients/cheaper cooking methods, I don't know but the end result is a meal that's just not worth having- we'd rather pay more for a decent meal.

Lovely place with lovely staff. The food was also great but it did take a long time to get someone to take our order and serve us. Free parking out back.

Family meal for seven. Very good service. As usual nice quality bar meal would recommend.

A great meal in a relaxed place

me and afew friends went to the gait Inn the other day and I will definetly be going back! I felt welcomed and the best pub experience I've had in a very very long time. Will definitely be visiting more often!

Went on Sunday 2nd July 23 as part of the Yorkshire Wolds Challenge cycling event 3rd time at this venue great place and atmosphere.

Me and my partner visited for the first time on Thursday for his birthday, after this place was recommended by a friend. From start to finish it was a lovely evening! The staff were lovely (especially the blonde haired one who’s name I didn’t get) the food was brilliant! My partner had the bacon and mushroom starter, mains I had the beef and potato pie with chips and peas and partner had a steak, then of course we couldn’t leave without dessert! I had the brownie and partner had the trio of desserts! Neither of us had a single negative thing to say about any of it! If I’m being really picky my only comment was that I was gutted that the cheesecake was grape and butterscotch - never heard of grape in a cheesecake 😂 all in all we had an amazing evening, the atmosphere was great, the food was wonderful and staff were lovely! This is definitely going to be our regular place now for a meal out!

A little country pub in a quaint Yorkshire village, but a bit dark and dinghy inside. Nonetheless, ideal as a rest stop post a walk in the countryside. Although the food was good, tasty and well cooked, we waited nearly 45 mins from the point of ordering to recieve our food.

What a lovely place, it doesn't have a massive menu but I suspect they are focused on doing what they do well rather than having a bigger, mediocre menu. 5 Real Ales on tap and very friendly and helpful staff. We went at lunchtime and as they only serve food from 12 to 2pm and it was very busy.

Had a lovely bar meal, so great to see a pub that is busy with great drinks and service. Could not recommend enough for everything, service, atmosphere and quality of dishes.

Broke our walk for a meal at the Gait Inn. Lovely village pub. Had the fire going as it was very cold out. Very pleasant and friendly young lady took our order and we didn't have long to wait. Good selection on the menu. I had the pesto, pinenut and pea pasta with garlic bread which was delicious and my husband had the gammon with an egg and pineapple with chips, equally yummy he said. The pub had a steady stream of people in for lunch which was good to see. Thoroughly recommend this pub

Excellent little pub, dog friendly lovely food

A great example of a village countryside pub. No pretensions, some good local beers on tap, wide and traditional food choice and hearty portions. It's a perfect place to relax on an evening, or after a walk through the stunning countryside outside.

Popped in for drinks after completing a leg of the wolds way. It's a lovely old style village pub with a good selection of drinks and food if required.

My husband and I had a lovely pub lunch here. Staff were friendly, good service. Will definitely return for another meal when we are out walking in the area. Serve quite a number of real ale (5 I think) and a good selection of wines.

Called in for drink great place.

We decided to do some walking on the Minster Way and had pre booked in here for a Sunday Roast. Fabulous lunch, great table for all of us and super friendly staff. Could not get over the value for money on the Sunday lunch.

Came here for an evening meal to try somewhere different. I opted for the meat pie and treacle sponge. Both were outstanding. The pie was full of succulent meat and was cooked to perfection. My friend also had the pie along with the brownie sundae, she commented that both were lovely. Meals and drinks well priced. The pub itself has a lovely decor and atmosphere. A proper country pub. Just how I like it, I can't wait to return.

what a great evening, lovely venue, friendly, welcoming staff, clean and relaxing surroundings. We all had a delicious meal. lovely starter Yorkshire puddings with onion gravy delicious (not available down south yet?) then I had the most delicious salmon steak with good choice of vegetables which was a special. It was absolutely delicious. It was one of the most delicious meals I've had. My friends were very pleased with their choices too! A really enjoyable evening, thank you :)

Superb pub and great food. I had the surf and turf, which was lovely, should be for £27. The food took a while to arrive at the table as the food was cooked fresh. The other meal I ordered was battered Haddock, and chips with mushy peas. Wow, the fish was delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff are friendly and the bar has a good selection of wine. There is ample parking around the back of the pub, and the interior of the establishment is lovely and gives it a good old vibe with the wood burner burning away, making it feel homely. Would recommend this place for a great family meal. Will be going back to this place. 8/10.

We have eaten at the Gait Inn several times after long walks - it never disappoints. Excellent value food, proper pub grub, with good range of beer and drinks. The staff are welcoming and really accommodating - it's a place I look forward to going after a day of walking in the Wolds

Very nice Sunday roast. But Yorkshire puds slightly burnt and plate swimming in gravy. The gravy should come in small jugs. Staff efficient and pleasant. Will visit again but will ask for gravy to be in a jug . Enjoyed.
