The Frying Pan in Southend-on-Sea

Had skate, which was over cooked, tasted rubbery, my husband could not eat it.

When I went here, I got the fish and chips with what was presumably salmon I believe. However it felt mushy and flavorless. The chips(fries) were good and did taste well. Until I woke up the next morning wanting to puke. I must have been served undercooked fish as I wouldn't have gotten sick otherwise. I will give this place a 3 star as it seems it's generally accepted and maybe my meal was a one off. Please view your food carefully when dining here.

Simply the best fish and chips in Southend. Smart and clean looking shop serving good value food with friendly and helpful staff.

Not a local, but will make a point to return to this place. For me everything was cooked fresh and with a smile- sat down to eat and was served well, very clean place - keep up the great food and service.

Freshly cooked F&C shame its not cooked in beef fat but still quality. Have had a take away many times and quality is consistant. Friendly staff, clean and tidy.

This is the best fish & chips in the area. Order online give a time and go collect and it will be ready for you, or just turn up and order. Fantastic staff that will always look after you

The food here is always excellent and very clean place, but the staff serving are usually young and just seem a bit clueless at times, they need to be more positive and interact better with the customers

Southend's premier eat in or take away Fish and Chip supplier. We visit for fish and chips before every Southend United home games and it was great to be back for the first time since May. The cod was fresh, white and covered in a crispy batter. The chips thick, fluffy potato with a tasty coating. Served with china plate, knife and fork and a smile. Perfect.

Not sure if I’ve already written a review for this place 🧐 Regardless it needs to be said. The Frying Pan is my only stop for fish n chips. We always have the cod bites, and they are gorgeous chunks of cod. No skin, no bones, no fuss. If you’re thinking about ordering from here get on with it. We have been having fish and chips from Steve and Julie’s Frying Pan for years. Best chippy in town in our opinion. Recently we have tried their homemade burgers - wow, they are excellent. Would definitely recommend!

The haddock was great, chips great, The chicken quaters are very good! As for the hot curry sauce...it was amazing 👏 This was the first time trying this place. One of the best chippys in town.

I regularly visit the Frying Pan and the fish and chips are really nice and good value for money. However, I was somewhat disappointed to queue for my food order and when I ordered it they cancelled my order and I had to wait again in the queue and re-order my food again. My overall wait time was about 30 minutes. This was due to me ordering a burger and was asked if I wanted salad and sauce but because I had to check to see if the member of my family wanted this I had my order cancelled. I asked the lady why this had to be cancelled and did not get much response. I wouldn't have thought it would have made any difference to the price whether I had salad and sauce or not so my food order should have not been cancelled and paid for there and then.

Staff are always friendly portions good and reasonable price.

Best chip shop in Southend, food is 10/10 and so fresh. Staff are really friendly great family business. Julie is great

Best fish and chip place around

My husband and I have been visiting the Frying Pan for many years. In our opinion, both eat in and takeaway are equally delicious. Personally, we believe it to be the freshest, friendliest chip shop in town. The chips are golden and crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Most importantly, the food is not greasy and you can request your fish to be cooked in a healthier manner.

The best fish and chips in Essex really tasty and fresh and reasonably priced the staff were great especially Julie who makes you feel really welcome we try to eat here every week

Cod was too moist inside ruined my dinner was expecting to be nice and flakey and pull apart nicely but was just mush, will be sticking to kingfisher up road

Expensive 5 knob of skate 8.70 without chips better off with a middle skate but nevertheless was really good ...chips do were a let down soggy and no taste Not surenif i will be back

Well what a disapointment ...i dont know whats happened i used to rate this place so glad when it re opened....got med cod and chips ...much smaller portion of luke warm chips and soggy batter on the cod no .crunch in site .........i wont be returning !!! Dont waste your money

The business is practically a southend institution, run by the same couple for decades. The quality of ingredients and the pride in their work shines through on a humble plate of delicious fish and chips!... They are also one of the only places around that you can get a bit of skate. Thank you for your service for so many years.

This is in my opinion the best fish and chip shop. Everything is cooked to perfection and I love they offer salmon and healthier options. The homemade coleslaw, tartare sauce and desserts are out of this world 🫶

Being fair chips arnt great anywhere at the moment as the potato season has been rubbish. But these chips were lovely. Lovely and crispy! We also had 3 large battered Sausages and again these were lovely and fresh and very crispy. I look forward to another visit soon 🙂

Disappointed. This used to be the best chipshop in town. However I went here for the first time since it reopened and I was less than impressed. Probably won't go back there again, shame.

I wanted a nice fried chicken. Unfortunately it was expensive and the worst I have ever had. So dry.

Recently reopened after being closed due to fire.

On a day out to Southend from Hertfordshire a few years ago, we had fish & chips at the Frying Pan. Our lunch was delicious - large portions, not greasy & lovely home made purple slaw & tartare sauce. Then Covid struck & when it was possible to return there we found it had closed due to a fire. We were so pleased to learn it had reopened so we went back today. The food was the same excellent quality, the premises look beautiful & the family who run the business are so lovely. Wish the place was nearer to home but it was well worth the journey. Will certainly return again soon. We can certainly recommend going there. Thank you Frying Pan - Hedy, Stan & Lara

Great fish n chips .sadly missed after the fire but back now .WELL DONE TO ALL STAFF.

Recently refurbished after a fire, the food is good (cod bites are very nice) and chips are cooked in rapeseed oil. Dining in is rather expensive - £26 for two. The burgers appear to be homemade but really peppery which I did not enjoy. Not enough or no sauce either on burger.

Just had take-away cod and chips, absolutely delicious 👌 It's a family run business and they are so welcoming and friendly. Mum makes a yummy home made tartare sauce and cheesecake 😋 give it a try folks 👍

Every time I come here I'm never disappointed, their food is always 1st rate,very tasty nd full of flavour, the staff are amazin,very friendly,helpful nd polite, wil always recommend to every1.

Got my mother in law her usual regular cod and 1/2 chios which she found very enjoyable. Pity they don't do gluten free

Went there on the way back from a hospital appointment. It was very busy but it wasn’t long before our order was ready. Wow ! The Cod was beautiful and the batter was so light and crispy. It was really delicious. My husband and I ordered one portion of chips between us which was enough. Our fish was medium sized but really big. Goodness knows how big a ‘large’ potion would be. Well done. Highly recommended. A special treat! We will be back.

Service was OK, but both bits of Cod were greasy. The fish was not sealed by the batter so dried out and absorbed the oil. Box it came in and plate it was served on were running in oil. Not what I expected given reviews on FB. Hope this was a one off, won't be going back to find out!!!!

Broad range of good quality fish cooked to your liking. You even get the option of having your fish cooked without batter. Great chips too. Staff are very friendly and service is very good. Probably the best chippy in the area.

Been going here for years. Unfortunately the last 2 times the fish wasnt cooked properly and the rock was full of bones and unedible. It ended up in the bin. Its a shame.

Picked up a takeaway for the first time from this fish & chip shop. I went there out of convenience since it was on my way home after a meeting at work. Not much fun standing outside in the snow and wind for around 20 minutes waiting for my order to be put together but the shop can't help the weather! Portion sizes were adequate, the only slightly off putting thing was that there was quite a bit of oil swimming around in the bottom of the fish box. I dabbed the fish with kitchen paper and it tasted fine. Prices were on the high side when compared to my usual fish & chip shop but I would go to The Frying Pan again if I happened to be passing.

Good freshly cooked F and C in a thin crispy batter. A healthy option is also available for those watching the calories. Very scrummy , enjoyable and not swimming in grease.

We have been going to this fish and chip shop for a very long time and we considered it the best around until 15th June. On that day we both had fish that still had it's skin on and the chips were just tiny bits of potatoes rather than a good size. This has never happened before and I sincerely hope it was a one off. Let us hope so otherwise we will have to find somewhere new.
