The Friary in Southend-on-Sea

Nice little meal. I was working down the road and didn't want anything too heavy so opted for the Cod Special. It was very tasty and just the right portion for me!

They are so mean with the portion size. I live in Southend and have been to many of the chip shops , they really are so mean with the chips. I now go to the Rock and Roe . Loads of chips with good quality.

Had a small and medium cod. The small one was so small there was only a couple of mouthfuls the medium one was small too and the large chips was the small as well. Really disappointed.

Stopped off for a large portion of chips. They were huge and reasonably priced. Crossed over and ate them on the beach. Good location. Looked very clean and staff were friendly.

One of the best fish and chips i’ve had! I had portion of chips and chicken strips. Was really tasty and want to go back again.

This is very local to our new home and we’ve tried it twice both times it was really good , long ques but definitely worth the wait , great chips and the most delicious cod bites , looks really clean there too , definitely will be back , it’s take out no eat in but across the road from the beach where there is a few benches , you get a ticket when you order so they call your number when it’s ready and they take cash or card ( not sure if there is a limit on card spend )

Lots of negatives here unfortunately. Staff are unfriendly and act put out when ordering food. The food all tastes of fish. Including the chicken, sausages and savaloys. And the worst thing is that the chips are just awful! Dry and tasteless. Go to Rams Fish bar instead.

I paid £6.95 for a piece of cod.which was so small ..hardly any fish in it . Absolutely disgusting .I've read the other reviews there not very good either. Stay away.

We had batter sausage and chips and cod and chips and curry sauce me and my partner absolutely loved it. We only live one minute walking distance from here but we decided to sit on the beach and eat it. Thank you very much guys perfect. 🤩

Food was cooked fresh and was very nice

A flying visit for mother & I. Visiting the Cliffs Pavillion and had a craving for F&C. Friary had good reviews and we swung on by. Cod & chips each and I had mushy peas. We climbed over the sea wall on a windy November night and sat on soke benches in the same. A decent meal, fish was boneless and the chips were nice. I would say both items could've done with a minute or 2 more frying for crispness bylut that's my personal taste. The mushy peas were volcanic in their heat but the pea and liquid had separated somewhat and had settled into 2 distinct layers. I wolfed mine down greedily and enjoyed every bite, like a true Brit I do love a Fish & Chip supper.

Sadly the only thing open on a Tuesday evening. Portion extremely small, taste very average

What could be better a sunny bank holiday Monday and fish and chips on the prom wall The Friary in my opinion is a proper fish and chip shop . We both had cod which was freshly cooked and the chips were fab . I also had the mushy peas Would definitely go back and recommend

Bought two medium cod and chips! Took away to enjoy down the road facing the sea! Omg when we opened one of the boxes which were placed in a carrier bag, the fish no exaggeration was more like a gougon/fish finger the other box was OK ish bit small! Tasted OK! Wouldn't buy from them again! If we hadn't driven so far away would of gone bk but we were starving! Do check yr boxes guys cheating buggers.

First and last time will be getting fish and chips from here. Ordered 2 large cod and large chips. The cod was okay, more like a medium than a large though, so at £9.50 each, expensive. The batter was a bit oily and had some fish bones. Large chips, we had to laugh, more like a small portion, I even went back in and send are these definately large, again expensive at £4.00. I then had to pay for the flimsy bag to put them in. Never been charged for a bag at a Fish and Chip Shop before. Normally go to Fish 2 Go, but as we were on the seafront thought we'd give this fish and chip shop ago. Not again, waste of almost £25.

May well be the best fish and chips I've ever had. Crisp but soft chips, and perfectly cooked cod.

Fish n chips on the beach is a cliché but sometimes it has to be done. This place was perfect. Just the right amount of fish and chips and just over a tenner including a drink.

A normal chippy shop with some amazing fish! I had the cod and commented more than once how good it tasted compared to other seaside fish and chips places I've had.

Haven't had Southend chips for a while and the Fryery didn't dissappoint, well worth a visit!

Staff not talkative but idc this is the best fish and chips I've had in a long time. I first went here in 2022 halloween night and I was very impressed bro !

the food is amazing i love there chips & burger they do, not so expensive like other places and faster service than Mcdonalds, very friendly and polite staff. There are many cafes and restaurants near by but i still choose to eat here and support them during the Spring till Autumn times

Freshly cooked skinless cod with lovely light batter eatenon the beach oppposite in nice tidy boxes very friendly family staff served in minutes. We will all cone again soon

Overpriced for awful food, would not bother going here again. Food was cold, did not taste nice, had to go spend more money and more time to go get some decent food.

Out with friends and thought I’d get something to eat, to be greeted with the worst rude and ignorant service I have ever come across, extremely overpriced food overcooked to the point it was inedible, it went straight in the bin, biggest waste of money. so bad to the point I would go out of my way to deter others from making the same mistake. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, take a walk further along the seafront towards the kursall/sea life centre and choose any other fish and chip restaurant, you will see multiple.

Firstly I was served by a child that's clearly been taken out of school to work in a greasy chip shop, I didn't expect much of the food but what came was shockingly bad. A portion of chips so small not even my toddler was satisfied with them not to mention the price was extortionate and they was cold !! When I told the only adult in the shop that the chips was cold he was highly aggressive and rude. By far the worst dining experience in my life!

Waited way too long for some dry chips and sausage in batter, honestly wish I could have rewound time and starved to death instead. Very disappointing for something along a sea front

Chips were horrible. It was like you would eat raw potatoes. No salt has been provided.

£28 spent on a meals to only be served in a burger box torn in half before leaving we requested a refund for the insult of food served refused and was rude aggressive no customer service skills want to serve food like we’re animals and not even a dog would have respected what was served have no hygiene levels a child behind the counter no nets nothing customer service goes a long way and you get away with ripping people off because your solo just eat and Uber would not tolerate what food you produced closed down and reevaluate your customer skills and food quality and portions £5.00 for that x5 how would you feel

Very expensive for poor quality and small portions. We ordered two small cod and chips with curry sauce. Shocked at price £21.50. Double the price of any chippy in the country. The smallest piece of fish and portion of chips possible.

Tastes nice. The takeaway is clean. However the portion size is too small.

Used to be the best fish n chips in town but gone right down the pan on quality of both fish and chips Shame because second best was The Frying Pan in Southchurch Road but that burnt down. When food was good it was worth the bit more they charged but now its poor value for money The wooden forks for eating with are so thin they split Need to get back to where you were before Friary…but probably won’t as it went downhill when it changed hands

Visited here today for two medium cod, large chips & mushy peas! £21.65!!! Cod was ok but batter not crispy, chips were terrible - overcooked & soggy! Won’t be using here again! M

We visit a lot,every week actually but lately the chips are not tasty, the oil is not fresh. Very disapointed with chips. The rise in prices is understandable but don't lose the quailty please!

Bit expensive took along while to cook 2 portions of chips but they was nice.

Was wandering around the beach and came across the chippy went in to grab a quick saveloy and chips and was served by a handsome young man (breedable) . The food was delicious but wanted to taste the cashier abit more 😉

Not sure if we had reheated lunch time chips, but at 4pm the chips were very dry and the portions were a bit tight. Sausage in batter was nice, but overall I think its priced for tourists. £14 for sausage in batter and chips twice, a couple of drinks and some curry sauce.

Got large chips that were overcooked, rock hard and the portion was no way a large, stone cold saveloy and soggy cod. Tried giving it to the dog he even turned his nose up and all for the bargain price of £15 absolute rip off do not bother!

Had a winter dog walk along to Southend in January and was trying to find a TripAdvisor rated fish and chop shop take away! Nothing obvious and the Friary came into view and had small fish and chips and ate them on the beach. Both were truly excellent.

I came here with my fad and brother, the portions are tiny, the fish was all batter hardly any fish! They gave our food wrapped in paper and charged us 30p per box. Please tell me is this normal? Haha worse fish and chips shop!

This is where I get my evening fish and chips everytime I visit Southend. Sad to see the bad reviews because I've always had lovely big and quality portions. A young couple seemed to run it, and I was always glad to support them.

Was expecting better from a seafront fish and chip shop. Chips were so dry and curry sauce was watery. Fish was alright but not amazing, the batter was just a bit soggy. Wouldn’t return

Just ordered medium cod and iv seen bigger fish fingers, it was a disgrace! The chips tasted like cold cardboard. I won’t be going back there again.

Chips were dry and felt fried in old oil... small size of cod in comparison to other places. Last week we went to Hastings and paid much less for much bigger portions ...also quality of food was much better.

Lovely staff but ordered a small fish which was tasty but was a lot smaller than expected compared to other places especially for the price. Chips were a bit stale too. Looking at reviews this may be a 1 off but wouldn't have again sadly.
