Fabulous chippy, great staff, very friendly. The fish fritters are brilliant as are the patties. Good value for money and very good portions, thanks to all.

Probably the rudest staff I’ve ever experienced. Definitely would not return or recommend. Very aggressive with their customers. Lots better places to go.

Best fish & chips I've had in a long time! We saw a queue and nearly didn't visit but so glad we did. The queue went down fast, we we're served quickly and the food was fresh! We visited on the day of annual Recovery Walk so I bet it was busier than usually. We all needed some we earned comfort food after travelling from Bradford and the 2.2 mile walk celebrating recovery. This chip shop hit that spot. I will recommend to anyone visiting Hull.

Tried to contact the shop numerous times using the phone number I’ve found on google. We came in Wednesday 26th July for 2x chips £4.10, we used my bank card. The lady said the transaction hadn’t worked and we tried again, later on when we checked online banking turns out it worked both times so you’ve taken 2x £4.10 (£8.10) off us for 2 very very small bags of undercooked chips. And there’s no way to get through to your shop and we don’t come into hull town often

I’d been really looking forward to Pattie and chips and was majorly disappointed. I’ve used the chip shop before and it was lovely but on this particular visit the chips were rubbish - really scrappy, dried up and bitty. I may as well have had a tray full of scraps. The Pattie was okayish but I was massively gutted

Fantastic value for money. Freshly fried and delicious . It's worth the trip into town just to get there £3.25 fish special. The portion sizes is just about right and leaves me satisfied but not stuffed and bloated. I always eat every scrap yum yum

This is by far the best chip shop in town! Never had a bad experience there in my numerous visits. There's a seating area outside where you can buy a fish special or our very own Pattie special, and just watch the world go by.

Lunchtime deal of £2.60 for sausage, chips and curry sauce or peas or gravy. Amazing chips. My wife has the fish which I really liked too (I usually hate fish) Kids love the food. Drinks aren’t ridiculously priced. Thoroughly recommend and the staff are lovely. Best chippy we’ve had in years.

This fish and chip shop is always reliable and the small portion fish and chips lunch with mushy peas/gravy/curry sauce (choose 1) is a bargain at £3.25. Always freshly fried and just the right size, this is definitely the best place to buy chips on the go in the Old Town. Plenty of bench seating nearby so sit and eat.

Overall the quality of the food is great. Chip shop scran without the overly excessive grease left overs... and their patty’s are pretty awesome as well. However in today’s day and age who does not accept cards?!?!?

Spent an enjoyable afternoon in Hull with an old friend who has left the area. He wanted Fish, patty and chips in paper for old times sake so I brought him here. Even on a cold winter afternoon it was busy but the staff were friendly and welcoming and served a delicious nod filling helping of haddock patty and chips. My fiend was delighted iwith the food (as was I) and both of us have returned separately. Well worth a visit.

Mi primera experiencia de haber pescado y patatas fritas en el Convento era. Yo estaba visitando a Hull.

Travelled to Hull Saturday evening for a John Godber play. When in Hull you have to have fish & chips. To oue surprise, at five O clock, nearly every eatery was closed. Stumbled across the Friary on Whitefriar Gate. I don;t like fish that has been holding in the hot compartment, I want it cooked to order, which they did. We were in there over twenty minutes, we noticed 2 battered fish still in the hot compartment (how overcooked would they be?) Our large fish were ready, straight of the hot oil onto the tray. Big mistake, as we found out. The oil had not drained off the batter so the tray was awash with oil. The actual fish, haddock, was delightful. The peas were a little past their best nut we were hungry. I feel the fish was better quality than we had at Bob Carvers a couple of months ago.2 fish 2 small peas £9.80

I had the fish special from Bob Carver's the day before and was very disappointed. A colleague suggested trying The Friary. Hot chips, light, crispy batter and a generous dollop of peas (which weren't part of the Carvers deal.) Puts the competition to shame.

This only opened a few years ago and has since become my main choice for food on the move whenever I'm in Hull. I usually get one of the specials, then walk to one of the nearby gardens or the New Theatre to eat. There is some seating on the shop front but they're usually occupied hence the need to eat elsewhere. They're not the greatest fish and chips I've had but they're far from the worst and I've never had any poor or bad meals from there. Service is OK... a couple of times it's been a little erratic but easy done when it gets busy which this place does sometimes. It is very small and narrow and if it wasn't for the seating outside it could be easy to miss and walk straight past it on a busy day.

A group of us popped in here on Saturday evening only to be told they had no chips ready. No offer to put some fresh ones on as they were closing in an hour - the female server was very rude and with our group and the many people we saw head in after us and immediately leave I'm pretty sure there's plenty who won't be returning.

We use this on a lunchtime generally for a work celebration. We don't order very often but when we do it is a large order. The quality is very good as is the prices. The specials are excellent value for money on our last visit we were given some salt and vinegar in pots which was great as not everyone likes it and it is hard when ordering for 13 people! Thank you we will be back again!

After visiting on a numerous occasion in the past the fish was really nice I have even recommend it to friends but on Sunday 17th August the fish didn't taste right, asked my husband to taste it, I took it back, tried to get the staffs attention while no public was in the shop! but they were in the back by the time they came out the shop was full. Member of staff came out with a tray of fish. I mentioned it didn't taste right, they both tried it looked at each other and both said it was ok. Gave me a refund but through it at me - Staff attitude to the public not very pleasing

After traipsing around Hull for a dog friendly pub I found this gem. It was quite busy for a Thursday lunchtime but my two well behaved dogs were more than welcomed. The barman got them some water and a dog biscuit each. I enjoyed a long cold Erdinger too. Would have stayed for more if I hadn’t wasted my time looking for such a pub. Nice place, good range of beers, friendly atmosphere and the staff more than helpful.
