On behalf of our large rowdy Xmas party I would like to thank all the staff for their fabulous service and attention to detail. From catering to specific dietary requirements to memorising individual’s varied drinks orders throughout the meal. The personal service was truly outstanding and all were more than impressed with the food but more so the atmosphere and staff. Highly recommend, especially for large parties. Special mention to Christian for top service from booking to settling the bill.

We hadn't booked but only had to wait 30 minutes for a table for 2. Drinks at the bar were ok. Got settled in by waitress(very pleasant)Starters were huge. I had fish gouging with sweet chili sauce and the Mrs had a deconstructed Prawn Cocktail. We were pretty full after that but then came my veal in a cream sauce, enough chips and veg for 2 people and the Mrs had chicken stoganoff. Plenty filling however the veal was a bit tough in places. No room for dessertWhen bill came they had included a service charge which wound me up so I asked them to remove it. I like to decide whether to tip or not. I did!!Very nice but just 20quid to expensive

Pre-booked for a Saturday evening. Wasn't overly busy although there was a party of around 10 in.The starters arrived after a thirty minute wait. Whitebait with salad on a red-hot plate.Partner had Garlic prawns - shelled, but not de-veined, slottened in garlic butter, again on a red hot plate. The waitress took our plates away and proceeded to scrape the plates into a bucket behind the bar instead of taking them to the kitchen. After another 20 minute wait, the mains were a trio of fish. A largish piece of Salmon and two of the smallest fillets I've ever seen which were overcooked with edges burnt. I'd asked for sauteed potatoes and these were also burnt. Again the plates were red hot. Totally inedible. Sent it back, paid for the wine & the starters and left. There are plenty of places to eat and I would suggest, on our experience, that you eat elsewhere.

I found polos after walking around in the old town and the head waiter actually came out to help me locate it!The rating staff were very efficient, friendly and hospitable, but the food was awful.I selected two dishes from the "specials menu" and special they were. I would not have though it possible to damage good quality ingredients so effectively.I started with Scallop St Jaque. The dish arrived in a bowl so hot i am sure i could have smelted lead in it (is it possible for anyone to qualify in cooking and not know that food continues to cook in a dish like this?). The scallops have effectively become doorstops, you know the rubber ones one used to see in hospitals etc? the sauce had all the appeal of under seasoned wallpaper paste. So much for the starter.I had selected Turbot fillet with a garlic and prawn butter, i had been looking forward to this before i had sampled the scallops! The dish arrived and ......... you guessed it, i could have easily lifted the fish off the plate and used the plate to cook a decent rare steak. Unbelievable. The turbot had been coated in something (dried wallpaper paste perhaps?) and was badly overcooked. All in all it was a terribly disappointing meal served in a lovely, character filled setting by excellent waiting staff.

We ate here as a couple during a recent stay in Hull. We were initially attracted by the closeness to our hotel. It's in an area of Hull referred to as the Old Town. We also thought the venue sounded interesting from a historical point of view. The venue itself was very good and although fairly busy this created a pleasant atmosphere. We were offered the choice of a drink in the bar or to go straight to the table. We chose to get straight on with the meal. Plenty of choice on the menu and we were not disappointed with any of our selections. Service was prompt and friendly. The only comment we would make is that it would be nice to see a bit more information about the history and past use of the building. Something that I'm sure many guests would like to know more about. Very pleasant evening and no hesitation in recommending to other visitors.

Visited here recently with my parents and had a fantastic evening. The service was impeccable and attentive and the food was delicious. The tomato garlic bread for starter was possibly the best I’ve ever had! The potatoes are tasty and my stroganoff was second to none. The decor is slightly dated but I agree that it added to the feel and ambience. Would definitely revisit and recommend to a friend!

My boyfriend booked a table here yesterday (29th) on recommendation from his friend whose family have eaten here for years. It looks very much at first like just a pub from the outside -but it is certainly a hidden gem in Hull. We were greeted and immediately felt welcomed as we were seated at our table and they got our drinks. I then ordered the Battered King Prawns for starters and the Surf and Turf. My boyfriend ordered the Funghi all’aglio Fresco (mushrooms) to start and Filetto Alla Voronoff for his main. The food did not disappoint and we got to taste each other’s meals. The prawns were beautifully fresh, the mushrooms had a gorgeous sauce and the fillets both cut like butter. I’ve eaten at a few Michelin restaurants that are so highly priced and sometimes I have found some to be over-rated, but this restaurant is not over-priced, has great portions, the food was exquisite and the whole place just has a great atmosphere. I was stuffed so did not manage a dessert, but my boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the cheesecake too. The gentleman front of house and the waitress could not do enough for us, even helping us sort our taxi home. Nothing was too much trouble and you can tell the gentleman is so passionate about his work. I can’t recommend this place enough and it is our new favourite place to dine out!

The ambience was pleasant, and the service was friendly if distinctly amateurish. But the food was disappointing, especially given that the prices were full whack. We both had one of the fish specials and both dishes felt as if they had been kept waiting too long so that they had dried out. The accompanying sauce was OK, as were the potatoes, but the vegetables were plain boiled and very unexciting.

We booked for this restuarant because we read some reviews which were positive and we wanted a good meal for our wedding anniversary. We should have been warned because it was not open over the bank holiday. The specials board outside looked great. Lots of seafood! We ordered from the specials board, a bit pricey but it was our anniversary. The first flag that made me wonder was when we were asked what sauces we wanted with our food. With my scallops I decided on a cheese sauce. My husband had whitebait without a sauce. For the mains , mine was seabass fillets and my husbands the trio of fish- salmon, plaice and seabass we both opted for the lemon and butter sauce. My scallops looked very anaemic and were covered in the sauce, I felt that it was a bit sickly. My husbands dish of whitebait was better and there was a lot of it. The mains were a bit dry, overcooked, and my husband was not impressed with his salmon. The sauce looked as though it had separated out, even when stirred it did not homogenise. Overall we were very disappointed, we felt that it was expensive for what you got and would not recommend to anyone. To be fair the customers who came in after us all chose the italian dishes and seemed happier with their choices. We should have asked if the fish specials were fresh that day. Our mistake.

The staff were lovely and welcoming and The Old Custom House is full of old fashioned charm. We were advised to try the Cottage Pie or Savoury Mince from the very comprehensive Specials Board, so we tried both and it was lovely warming comfort food that certainly brightened us up no end. ! Wow this Italian restaurant comes in my top three experienced so far in my short life. Mine was a last minute booking for 10. The restaurant owner was accommodating and made room for our group; once again ‘Thank you’. Right; the menu was varied fish, meat, pasta and vegetable options. The food was fresh and served ‘hot’ on ‘hot plates’. The interval between courses was very well timed. The service received was outstanding again Thank You.The toilet was clean but could do with a bit of a touch up. The restaurant is over two levels; so wheel chair users must book (not sure if there is a loo down stairs). Access to the upper floor is up some spiral stairs.

My brother and I came in from the cold for a drink and a warm-up. We studied the menu and decided to eat here (I had eaten there once a few years ago). We both opted for the set menu and were not disappointed. For our starters we had bruschetta and fish cakes, followed by a main course choice from 4 options - we both chose the sauté of beef Stroganoff with vegetables and different new potatoes. We ordered a bottle of Chianti. There were plenty of choices for desert, but being old-fashioned we both had Sticky Toffee Pudding with ice cream, which was delicious. Coffee followed, served by the excellent restaurant staff. We were replete!

really disappointed to give this restaurant a poor review. However 6 of us visited in December for a set menu (work treat as a thank you from the boss). food was really lovely, the service was ok not excellent but ok felt like we were not entirely welcome and was just been rushed in the hope we would leave. would defo not take my children here for fear of them making a noise . its a very quiet restaurant and you can hear your self think Think our bill was incorrect where the groups drinks are concerned and its not broken down and couldn't be answered when questioned so i'm positive extra drinks were added to the bill which we didn't have . in addition we left a £10 table tip as a thank you but then on closer inspection of the bill had a service charge which was not pointed out by the cashier and simpply just added to our bill of over £25 therefore i will definitely not return with friends or my husband as i was left feeling ripped off. shame as the food side of the review was simply beauitiful

This is an ambient restaurant with amiable and attentive waiting staff. The establishment clearly has it's niche and appeals to a particular clientelle. The extensive menu however appears to have been designed for the palette of a bygone era, when a diner would be satisfied simply by something foreign. There is nothing wrong with nostalgia and I appreciated the Foxes Glacier Mint accompanying the bill - and was hopefully an ironic touch. Unfortunately the passing of time dulls the palette, but hasn't dulled mine sufficiently to compensate for what it appears to have done to Chef's. There was no subtlety in the volume of chilli powder that seasoned the meatballs and the marriage of Roquefort and Beef ended in messy divorce right there on my plate. My dining companion suggested his pate and veal was "ok" however we decided this was a once only culinary experience. If you are over 55, and your taste buds are shot, I am sure you will enjoy.

We were a party of twelve celebrating a family birthday and wow! did Paolo's do it in style! This is what Italian's do at their best......cater for groups and get it right, every time. We had rinks beforehand in the bar and then through to our tablefor a meal. there was no pre-ordering, just choose what we wanted from the extensive menu as well as a blackboard with starters and main courses. Everyone seemed to choose different dishes, but they all came out together and were spot on. I started with deep-fried brie in a sauce, and if I tell you that it was absolutely delicious, I wouldn't be lying. I've had similar dishes that were served dry with salad and a little jam, this was drenched in a strawberry (I think) syrup.......beautiful. My main meal was Lasagne - I just fancied. The menu said 'like Mama used to make', and it was very, very tasty and fairly light. It's not often that I can eat a whole lasagne as it can be quite cloggy with a lot of heavy cheese sauce, but Paolo's made it 'like Mama'. My husband said his Fish Pie was superb. The service was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. I would certainly go their again when I am next in the City.

My husband, my brother and sister in law and I had a lovely evening at Paolo's on Friday 26th February 2016. The food was lovely and the customer service that we received was great. From the moment we arrived we were all made to feel valued as customers and nothing was too much trouble. Customer service is often over looked in many restaurants, but not at Paolo's. With regards to the food, there was nothing that any of us could fault. All the starters and main meals were of very good quality, cooked perfectly and they were all nice portion sizes. I have to say, the king prawn dishes were fab. I had the King Prawn Thermidor, which was excellent and the Battered King Prawn dish that two of our party had were also excellent. My husband loves battered king prawns and he assured me that these were one of the best dishes that he has ever had. They obviously buy the biggest and best king prawns on the market! Three of our party had T-Bone steak and homemade onion rings and they all said it was excellent. The beef stroganoff was really good too.The menu choices are great. Something for everyone and there is also a specials board too.The building is beautiful, it has a lot of character and I love the overall décor. I don't mind the rustic look and the marbled top tables, as it makes you feel that you have stepped back in time and that you are actually abroad, in Italy. We all agreed that Paolo's provided us all with excellent quality food and that we would be making Paolo's our favourite restaurant of choice in the Old Town of Hull. Only one thing that I have to mention on my husbands behalf, it would be great if Tiramisu was on the dessert menu. x

Beautiful building but let down by the decor which is dated; marble topped tables, old carpets and a trellis screen. Fabulous selection on the menu and specials board so I was looking forward to the food. I ordered moules mariniere, and surf and turf with a salad and Italian roast potatoes. Moules mariniere is one of my all time favourites so I was pleased to see it on the specials board. However I was so disappointed - I've never had it with great lumps of celery and slices of red onion in a weak watery sauce!! My husband had scallops served in a shell - bit dated these days unless it's coquilles st.jacques! So I was hoping our mains Roquefort Steak rare and surf and turf medium rare would salvage the experience. The surf and turf arrived - steak with 2 king prawns swimming in an oily greasy mess! Not as advertised! And the chef must have got confused -I had the rare steak and my husband had the medium rare swimming in a sauce with a chunk of Roquefort on top. Would have been better if the sauce had been served separately so you could choose whether or not to issue your steak with armbands! The sides didn't save the meal; the salad was varying sized chunks of cucumber, peppers and tomato with 3 salad leaves! And the Italian roasts were served in the same dish they were cooked in - they were stuck to the dish so I ended up missing out on the crispy outer and only able to get to the fluffy insides - such a shame! Not impressed overall. Service wasn't great either; waiter /waitress (4 different people serving us!) visited the table 8 times and never removed the dirty used glasses. And finally, there's a notice in the bar saying they won't tolerate swearing however it's not enforced- people on the tables either side seemed unable to communicate without swearing (loudly)!Maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes but I'm not prepared to spend the cash to find out with so many other venues to try. Such a shame, if only the food and presentation was post 1990s!!!!!
