Having had an excellent Sunday lunch a couple of months ago I invited two friends to join us for a weekday treat , it was not up to expectations. Having been given menus and the wine list,my friend had to go in search of a waiter so that I could order the wine, Having achieved this, we ordered from the menu. The first courses were good . One of my guests ordered steak and kidney pudding . This arrived as a deconstructed mess rather than the traditional shape. Mustard was requested but never arrived. My wife and the other guest ordered salads as accompaniment ,but these failed to arrive until they had finished their main course. All this for a fairly eye warring bill. I fear that this establishment with grandiose aspirations is now a faded version of its former glory.

Special occasion lunch for 3 of us. The olives and bread at the beginning were good. Not many restaurants include this anymore or they charge for it. We had crab salad and lobster cake for starter. 3 Dover sole, 1 x grilled and 2 x meuniére. 2 desserts and 2 coffees and 1 bottle of Sancerre. All for 350.00 pounds. The Sancerre was 60 pounds and probably the cheapest on the menu but it was very nice. It was also very nice of Eleanor to organise a surprise at the end for my daughters birthday, chocolate brownie with a candle on it. Nice touch. Thank you Eleanor. Overall, the service was amazing and the staff were superb. The food needs to improve I'm afraid for the price. Crab salad could be a bit more tastier or more imaginative but the lobster cake was excellent. Starters were 27.00 each. The Dover sole was very good but mine was swimming in far too much butter, I had to remove it from my plate. 47.00 pounds per fish, additional add ons are potato, veg, salad. 2 dessers/puddings could definitely improve. Souffle was disappointing and the chocolate tart was not great either at 20.00 pounds each. Coffees were 7.50 each which came with petit fours which were not good/cheap ingredients. Leave them out altogether would be my advice. I understand that restaurants are businesses and all the excellent well trained staff have to be paid plus the cost of buying the food plus taxes. It was an experience for sure and it wasn't all bad. Would I go back, probably for a special occasion, but would choose the food more carefully.

My parents wedding anniversary. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a warm smile. The restaurant is in a beautiful setting on the Thames in a pretty village. The staff chatted to us throughout the evening and brought out a beautiful cake with Happy Anniversary for my parents. The portions were a good size and the food was delicious. It was a very special evening, thank you to the French Horn for making the evening so special.

A bit disappointing. We live locally and have been at the French Horn 4-5 times over recent years and always considered it expensive but top class, something a bit special for a celebratory meal. Last Friday was a disappointment. On arrival we started with drinks outside and were seated at a table with a tablecloth that was a bit dirty and had no flowers/candles etc. The meal was quite tasty but poorly presented. The lobster thermidor came as a lobster, nothing else with it. No garnish, salad, sauces etc. My wife's 'Dublin Bay Prawns' looked like something bought from a supermarket and deep fried. Nothing else came with them, zero presentation. Just crumb batter coated prawns dumped on a plate. My sister's steak was good, and reasonably well presented, but again nowhere near ''top notch' presentation. For the over £500 we paid it was exceptionally poor value. We have eaten much better at two restaurants less than 200m down the road. Also, it was Friday evening and the place was fairly empty. I'm guessing that clients have seen this drop in quality and are staying away. I cannot see us coming back for a long time.

Starters and duck great, lamb chewy and all waiter could say was that he had never tried it! Cocktails were disappointing with a Moscow Mule served in a Slim Jim glass rather than the theatre of a copper mug. Bells whisky in an Old Fashioned! Wife’s birthday but not even mentioned once. Inside appears dated but lucky to have beautiful weather to dine outside. Over 30 years since I visited regularly and love the setting. Clientele has certainly changed. An extra £70 bottle of Brut somehow managed to find its way onto my bill. Hope our next visit will be more rounded as despite above, wife loved the location.

Lots of lovely extra touches such as olives, melba toast, canapés etc with your drinks. Extremely quick service and our waitress was very professional and helpful. The food was delicious we had the crab and lobster to start and then the duck for main. Lots of delicious sides. The wine list very extensive. The meal and wine was very well priced and we had a lovely table looking out onto the river. We can’t wait to come back!

This hotel is almost excellent. Downstairs it certainly is, with prices reflecting high expectations!. Lovely food, extensive wine list and thoroughly 'french horn themed', bar with comfortable lounges off. Upstairs not so clever, with just some observations being; luke warm (hot) water (even though we were told on arrival to run it for several minutes), bathroom radiator gurgling, no bedside water glasses, no bathroom extractor fan, curtain linings torn, no supplementary bedding, some windows too stiff to open much. The large double Queen sized bed was very comfortable and wardrobes were full of decent hangers. And lovely views over the garden and river from room 7.

The surroundings and service were very good, but the food was grossly overpriced and not very well cooked. One of our party had to send her veal back as it was tough and inedible. The signature duck was lacking in flavour and lacked a crispy skin. The wine list prices have to be seen to be believed! This restaurant, sadly, is failing to live up to its reputation and the kitchen needs resuscitating.

Dinner in restaurant to celebrate my father’s 85th birthday. Pre dinner drink in bar sitting beside roaring open fire spit roasting their famous duck. Service was prompt and professional. Food well presented and prepared and cooked to perfection. The wine list is something else, first growth Bordeaux you will need a second mortgage for, to well priced burgundy. There are a few new world wine, but predominantly French.

Went for a birthday lunch. I have good memories of this place from about fifteen years ago. Well - the good points. Nice welcome. Good bar selection and reasonably priced. The dining room is spacious and airy, with a lovely view of the Thames on a sunny day in February (always a bonus!) Then it got worse. The service was really not very good. I echo another reviewer's comment about "badly dressed waitresses" and I agree that it was slapdash. The starters were very well done to be fair - I had foie gras and my wife had foie gras terrine - tasty indeed. But - spit roasted duck. This is the signature dish. Well cooked, but hacked rather than carved and dumped on the plate with some gravy, dry stuffing and apple sauce (no, really). I did expect a better standard of cooking and presentation for the money. I could have done as well. The wine was lovely, but - it's all very, very expensive for the standard. Honestly, 50% increase in this high price to eat at the Waterside would have represented better value. I won't be back.

Visited 28th Jan. Two couples. This review is largely from the point of view of the prices charged and therefore the experience expected. We were kept waiting for our table for almost half hour, but we were in the lounge so it was was nice however they didn't serve us drinks for some time (too long IMO). Our waiter wasn't 'rude' exactly but snooty and unfriendly. They didn't ask if we wanted more drinks even once, we had to call them over each time and there wasn't the usual "is everything ok" interjection, which I would have welcomed as my steak was significantly under cooked. I asked for a cognac at the end and the waiter asked if I wanted it with desert or after. I said 'with'. It came about 15 minutes after I'd finished my desert, with no apology (or even a smile). We weren't offered any drinks at the end of the meal, or even approached once ... in the end we were the last table, but one, and had to get up and walk to the reception to ask for our bill. Not impressed. FOOD: Starter: I had the foie gras which I wouldn't usually order however it was the only item I found appetising on the starter menu. I wasn't impressed. My wife tried it and said the same. We agreed that the Aldi pate we'd bought was better. Main: I had the chateaubriand. It was a lovely piece of meat but under cooked (we asked for med-rare). Our partner couple ordered the the same but 'medium' and there was a significant difference. Either theirs was overcooked, by the Horn's standards, or ours was under. Sides: string beans - very ordinary, nothing special at all, and potato dauphinois, which were lovely. Desert: bread and batter pudding. Lovely. Our partner couple who've visited there several times over the years said he'd noticed that standards have slipped in the last few occasions he's been there but they're seemingly holding onto business by their reputation. Overall we weren't happy with the delays, the waiter (especially) and the general service, based on the prices they charge, and won't be revisiting.

It’s great to find somewhere that still combines a friendly atmosphere with excellent service. From the bar to the dinner, classic drinks and dishes were served with warmth, charm and attention to detail. Highlights included duck roasting on an open fire in the bar, good real ale, crepes suzettes prepared at the table, large and varied wine list. Everything we had was beautifully prepared and tasted marvellous. If it was just me I’d give it 5 stars, but I have dropped 1 star as my wife found the food a little fussy in an old fashioned way. However, if you like classic French cuisine you will love it as much as I did, and she endorses the 5 start rating for the service and value.

Was working in nearby Reading and stayed here for 2 nights, it was lovely. Went for a run along the Thames and it was very enjoyable! Food in restaurant was amazing and such a treat! Room was a little cottage and breakfast was delivered to your room on your requested time, so cute and great idea!

Our family had a get together and visited this wonderful restaurant. One of my uncles had been before a few times and recommended it. I had smoked salmon, Dublin bay battered king prawns with triple cooked chips and a medley of deserts. Absolutely fantastic service and the food was delicious. The premises is in a wonderful picturesque setting too.

Great meal with family but a little pricey. Hadn’t visited for over 20 years. Staff were very attentive. Disappointed with the Dublin Bay Prawn starter - very average.

I have now eaten at The French Horn twice and I love it. The most recent event was to celebrate a milestone birthday and I together with 44 friends were invited for lunch. The food was wonderful and of course the duck outstanding. The decor is delightfully dated which is sort of comforting. Staff are wonderful and all in all you will have a good lunch or dinner. I stayed overnight and was less than impressed with the rooms which are in need of refurbishment. That said the breakfast brought to your room was wonderful. Can't wait to go back.

We visited here in March and had a really nice time. The hotel is a bit tired and could do with a bit of decoration, but overall the food was nice and it was in a nice setting. The service was also very good. However, I'm shocked that they charged £65 for a 3 year old child to eat Sunday lunch. This seems like an absolute rip-off. We take our son to many restaurants and hotels globally and have never been charged the same for him to eat as us.

Title says it all. We visited with friends who hadn’t been before and they were bowled over by the quality of the food and service. We love the traditional style and fine dining service. The Beef and Duck is exceptional as are the Dublin Bay Prawns starter. Looking forward to our next visit in 2020.

Invited to Sunday Lunch to the French Horn, by friends, we were NOT disappointed. This establishment is old, cosy, quirky and individualistic.

In an age of facelifts and updates the French Horn remains delightfully unchanged. The bar are is cosy and comfortable, as one watches the ducks cooking on a spit. They should have a better range of gins - some things have changed for the better. The restaurant is lovely and Elaine a joy. Try to get a window seat by booking ahead. The duck is the thing to have, but I would like to see steak diane on the menu and may be Blackforest Gateau ! The rooms are fine but cottages better. The breakfast arrangements are marvellously complex - but somebody once thought it was a good idea so there you are. All in all - first rate - particularly if you voted Brexit. There were quite a few people in black tie at dinner. I will definitely be back.

Our 1st impression, having not eat at the French Horn for some years, was how very tired the decoration & overall decor has become - the dining room ceiling is well overdue a coat of white paint.

The French Horn advertises itself as a Restaurant with Rooms, so it is perhaps fair to see the Restaurant and the good as the Major element of a stay here, however one can’t get away from the fact that if one is staying overnight the accommodation is important. We arrived mid afternoon and parked in the car park over the road from the Restaurant and went over to check-in. We had booked a Superior room, described on the website as being over the restaurant with views to the river so we were surprised to be taken back over the road to a cottage behind the car park! Granted it had a view to the river but the downstairs ( the only bit I saw) was furnished a la 1970s and smelled of damp; I set off back across the road to reception to point out the contradiction between what we had been allocated and what we had booked. The Reception seemed surprised that we should be unhappy and swiftly moved us to one of the Superior rooms over the restaurant with views to the River...... So why didn’t they do that at the outset!! To be fair, my wife who had explored the cottage in my absence later said that the bedroom and bathroom were much more modern and well presented than the, frankly disgusting, downstairs.

The first thing to mention is the room we had booked a superior one and the view was superb to the river, however the furnishings were 25 years out of date and scruffy.

We turned up today on a wet and windy day. They bent over backwards to serve us. Then when we asked for the best taxi service locally they informed us just how difficult it would be. Within seconds they offered us a ride back to our campsite. Can’t recommend enough

I recently attended an auction at the Swan at Tetsworth via telephone link, having never had any experience of auctions previously. The help and advice I received from Paul and Spencer were invaluable, and I am absolutely delighted with the items that I successfully bid for. I would also mention Jaya who was extremely helpful with arranging delivery of said items. I would definitely recommend the Swan at Tetsworth.
