We fancied a change from the hotel restaurant and the menu the Freke Arms offered had plenty of gluten-free options as well. We booked and received a message back quickly confirming the booking. We were greeted warmly and shown to our table promptly. Menu options were explained clearly and there were several specials on offer. The food we received was plentiful and very tasty indeed and the beer and wine were delicious. All the staff were friendly and we had a good chat about the pub as it had a bit of history. Karen and her staff went above and beyond and the service we received was first class. If we are ever in the area again we would certainly stop by the Freke Arms for a meal.

Went for lunch and what a lovely treat. On arrival a warm and friendly welcome from the landlord and staff. The menu offered a wide choice at reasonable prices. The food we ordered was absolutely delicious and plentiful. Will be returning to try more delicious food from the menu. Nice and relaxing environment.

Having been to the Freke Arms for an enjoyable lunch last year I did not consider there would be any issues in returning for a family evening meal. A sign announcing fully booked showed promise that it was a popular venue and worth the visit. Plenty of staff gave the impression that service would be prompt and efficient, it was not. The staff are not customer focused instead choosing to talk amongst themselves and blatantly ignoring customers and turning their backs when attempts to engage them are made. A 30 minute wait to half clear the table of mains was followed by a further 20 minutes to ask if we would like to see the desert menu. We did wish to see the menu and the board was placed on the table. After a further 20 minutes of being ignored we chose to pay and leave rather than place an order. Sticky tables, gristly steak, cremated pork, bland sauces and appalling service this venue has much improve. If I owned this venue I would be asking some serious questions about the staff, their attitude and their total lack of commitment.

We stopped here for dinner while in the area and it was just what we needed! We were look after so well , everyone was so welcoming, really efficient, friendly and professional and the food was really lovely, perfectly cooked steaks, they tasted so good and love that all the meat is supplied by a local butcher only a mile away. Varied menu to cater for everyone . The dining room was decorated very nicely and our black lab Murphy was also treated very well 😊🐾🐾 Thank you for a really lovely evening , we will definitely be back

Went for Sunday Roast and it didn't disappoint. We pre-booked our table, glad we did as they were fully booked. The choice was Beef, Lamb, Turkey, Gammon & a vegetarian option. Service was excellent, and the Roast Dinner was plentiful with 5 vegetables. Being an Arkelks there was 3B & Wiltshire Gold on tap.

Place has gone down hill. Restaurant was cold so had to keep my coat on. I had a glass of wine which was served with a block of ice?? Lamb steak was over cooked and very tough so was inedible, and no consideration for customers as staff were too busy talking amongst themselves. Really disappointed as last time we went it was wonderful. Will not be visiting this restaurant again unfortunately!

I will keep this as short and to the point as much as I possibly can as I really do not want to relive the experience! Not being local I guess we took our chances here. Let me begin…. We walked through the door and were pretty much accosted by a downcast looking woman wearing a stained, scruffy lounge suit and plimsoles, her greasy hair was dragged back into a ponytail, she was unfriendly and curt, perhaps because we hadn’t booked, but there were plenty of empty tables available. We were seated right at the back of the almost empty pub. We both sat quietly, a little bit stunned, as the huge laminated menus were tossed in front of us, we ordered our drinks, and scanned the menu but we became aware of a horrible smell and noticed that we’d been seated next to the dog friendly area, there were no dogs present but the smell was overwhelming. Our drinks arrived without any interaction from the host. After looking at the choices on the menu, we noticed the only vegetables available were peas or salad, with literally everything. We noticed quickly how cold the pub was and both kept our coats on and noticed the few guests were keeping theirs on too. We decided enough was enough, to drink up and leave when a couple arrived and were seated almost next to us with two large slobbering dogs. The host was rude when we told her we had decided not to stay for a meal. Honestly the carpet is filthy, the place is dated and is in serious need of a make over, some staff that actually want to work in hospitality and in a public facing role.

Recently visited the Freke Arms with some friends for evening dinner. On this occasion we had pre-booked for the Christmas menu. All started off as expected, service was quick, drinks brought promptly and our pre-ordered starters arrived quickly. Soup was very nice, as were the prawns, the chestnut mushrooms with chorizo not that good. Roast Turkey dinner was OK followed by a less than average size piece of cheesecake and a very disappointing jam sponge for dessert. To end the evening we were offered ‘instant’ coffee (as opposed to filtered as advertised) and the most least attractive mince pie I have ever seen. Supermarkets value range look better than these. For a Christmas meal this was no where near as good as it should have been. :(

We were 2 couples for lunch on 18/10/23 - the choice of food was wide and catered for all tastes. As a group we all had different dishes ranging from the vegan curry, to vegi sausage & mash, normal sausage & mash and a mixed cheese baguette with crispy fries. We also indulged in various desserts, including chocolate fudge cake, cherry Bakewell cheesecake and vegan cheesecake. Without fail, all the dishes were cooked and presented really well and were hugely enjoyable. Service was prompt and efficient & the staff were uniformly friendly and attentive. They even happily provided jugs of custard for the 2 heathens to put on their cheesecake !! We didn’t feel the pricing was unreasonable at all and this is a very nice pub restaurant we would all quite happily return to.

So the pub has new owners since our last visit, which was way before lockdown. We were a little apprehensive as they were fully booked, so would be interesting to see how they coped with all of the COVID restrictions in place. We were welcomed at the door and checked in, then taken to our table. All of the staff were courteous and all wearing face masks. Being the first time out we decided to splash out and I went the whole hog and ordered the 16oz T-bone. Even though they were very busy there wasn’t a long wait for the food. The menu has a varied selection including a specials board. As advertising as the ‘Grill on the Hill’ they had a nice selection of steaks and grills. All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and even had to have a desert as they sounded appetising.

Restrictions are in place of course but it felt like pre lock down normality which I think everybody’s craving right now. The portion size was even to big for my husband and the delicious Ham, Chips and eggs, with salad had me after half the beautifully honey roasted ham and one egg! We noticed that a mid week Roast is available for £7.50, which we aim to sample this week. What a breath of fresh air - amidst a sea of dull lifeless chain pubs it's nice to see a good old fashioned pub serving a range if drinks and proper homemade food.Came here for a meal on a Thursday with my mum and sister, friendly landlord to greet, plenty of variation on the menu and accomodated my dietary restrictions (coeliac).Had the gammon steak and chips - thick, juicy bit of gammon. The girls had the homemade lasagne with garlic bread. Cheesecake for dessert was very good too - nice oaty base in the gluten free offering. It was all great and the bill was very reasonable, shall definitely be returning here and I would highly recommend it.

We visited the Freke on Wednesday and were rather disappointed with our food. Although it was on the main menu, they had no Salmon which left me with a very small alternative!! I opted for the chargrilled chicken which was very small and I’m afraid to say, over cooked and very tough. My meal was served on a cold plate with enough new potatoes to feed all four of us! My son had calamari strips for starters and said it was not very nice, however my husband and daughter in law had two types of garlic bread and it was really lovely. Two of the other meals were very nice but again were served on cold plates, however my sons lasagne was much to be desired and was eaten purely because he was hungry. The service was great and the staff very helpful and friendly but I’m afraid we wont be eating there again.

Three of us went for lunch last week. We had booked a table which was just as well as the restaurant was pretty full. There seemed to be a shortage of full menus but we asked and were told the options. We settled for the smaller meal which was just as well as the plate of fish and chips we were given was more than enough. It was served piping hot, freshly cooked and was very tasty. Even I, who doesn't generally have a desert, was tempted by the choice of 'puds'. The whole lunchtime experience was very good and even with a glass of wine each was reasonably priced. We visited again to make sure the first time was not just a lucky meal . We ordered a ham, eggs and chips and sausages and mash . They arrived after some 10 minutes and the portion size was enough for four people not two . All the meals were hot and plenty of it .Definitely a place to try your next meal out ,they have a new menu as well.

My friends and I went here on Saturday lunch, there is a Chinese menu on offer, didn't really expect it in a country pub! I really like crispy chilli beef, it's my fav Chinese food, the one here was different, proper steak strips which tasted great and the sauce was hotter than I usually like but when mixed with the rice was great. We were given free prawn crackers and spring rolls while we were waiting for our food which is a nice touch.

We went to the Freke Arms as we were looking for somewhere a bit different that made good food. We knew a few people who had been here a few years ago and said it was really good.

We’ve eaten here twice in the past week. The second visit we chose the lunch menu, 2 courses for 7.95. I wasn’t expecting much but the portions were very good, nicely presented. Not as big as the monster portions from our first visit (which were very good) but to be honest much better size for lunch. As a bonus the puddings were brilliant, rounding off an excellent quick lunch. Local Arkels beer was excellent and service was quick, polite and friendly. What more can you ask for?

I went here with my husband, we had a lovely meal. The ham egg and chips were a very high standard, very good thick sliced ham, I had a prawn and Marie Rose sauce salad, pretty simple but the presentation was exceptional, top marks all round.

I was disappointed with the atmosphere in this pub. On arrival at the pub we were informed that there were no tables available. e were just having a drink and there were no bar stools or seats to sit on. It was also quite cold and unfriendly. Disappointingly unfriendly and not very cosy for a Sunday near Christmas. I wouldn't recommend.

Had a Christmas meal here, first time to this pub.... it was amazing!!! I'm not sure what the sauce was on the prawn cocktail but it was really nice and had a bit of a kick to it! The turkey was a generous, tender portion and very tasty gravy, even some thought has gone into the veg. The xmas pudding was a very good standard for a pub meal, big and flavoursome. Every body in the group was happy, will be back throughout the year!

Haven't visited the Freke for 20 years ! But still the good old pub hospitality, none of the forced smiles, none of your " order your food at the other till", none of paying in advance, not even asked to leave my credit card behind the bar in case I did a runner ! Impressed.

I've visited the pub a handful of times a year for the past few years, and the vegetarian food has always been good. This time I had the veggie burger, which was flavoured with lemongrass and chilli. It was delicious, and came with a huge portion of potato wedges, which were crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and a dinky side salad. If a rural pub out in the sticks (it's on the B road between Blunsdon and Highworth) can serve up decent veggie food, I don't know what's stopping some of these bigger restaurants!

I normally have a lovely experience,i am used to the lovely focused staff and incredible drinks however, the staff that was serving on the 4th of june were unfocused, chatting to each other which left me and other customers waiting for about 10 mins, took them ages to make as they were chatting and gossiping! i normally don’t like writing reviews but felt this was necessary:/ photo is supposed to be a mint choc chip frostino 🤦♀️
