I recently had a disappointing experience at The Fox & Pelican for Sunday lunch. While I had booked a table specifically, upon arrival, I found the designated area overflowing with dogs. Although the staff kindly moved us to the "non-dog" section, the issue persisted as patrons continuously brought their dogs into the public bar, leading to a domino effect of barking throughout the establishment. The overall environment became quite chaotic and frankly, unhygienic for a pub serving food. While I understand some establishments are dog-friendly, the sheer number of dogs (at least 15-20 by my estimation) significantly impacted the dining experience. It goes against the basic hygiene standards expected in a restaurant, especially one that prides itself on its food. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend The Fox & Pelican in its current state, especially for those seeking a peaceful and hygienic dining experience.

After a long day took my daughter for dinner 18:00 on a Tuesday. For me, Chicken pate to start, toast was cold, the main which was beer battered haddock had been fried to death. They did bring gravy for my daughters chips though so forgiven. However, ordering desert at the bar one uses normal manners “may I have the fish please” to which the reply was “that’s ok” I’m pretty sure it’s ok, no one asked how my dinner was or I would of told them what is mentioned here. Can’t say it was very busy. Not very impressed. Wish I’d taken a picture of the nuked fish.

Children’s menu was massively overpriced. Daughter had the pizza which looked like the type you can get for about £0.80 in the supermarket with a couple of slices of watery tomato on top. We have always liked this pub, so decided to have a meal on the spur of the moment after walking our dogs nearby. We ordered the trout salad and Ham egg and chips. The latter was lovely, but the salad was terrible! The rocket was limp, as it would be if a few days old and left in the fridge, and very sparse on the plate. The dressing was non existent. The trout had a nice flavour but again was dry and seemed like it had been sitting around in a fridge for a few days. Sorry to write this but for as pubs are struggling to attract customers I feel they need to offer a consistent and decent standard of food. This was around £45 for 2 pretty basic plates of food, a shandy and a beer. We wont be back for a while as we would rather spend the limited amount we have to eat out somewhere where the food is better.

Food was nice enough. Not huge portions. Big downside was the inflexibility of the menu / staff. Along with several other meals, ordered a plant based burger, the menu stated this came with chips. When I asked if I could swap the chips for sweet potato fries ( same price on the sides menu ) was told I could not do that and would have to purchase the sweet potato fries as an additional side. I questioned it and was told in no uncertain terms that this was not negotiable. Pretty penny pinching from this pub chain. Wouldn't recommend if you have any special requirements. Disappointing

Painfully disappointing roast. The pork came without crackling despite being listed on the menu. Yorkshire puddings were so overdone they were like stale bread. The mains and the starters came at the same time despite us asking to come separately. Mains came out after 5 minutes which was a bit strange. I'm all for speedy service, but that's a bit much. Turkey was unusually dry. Which is saying something, becuase turkey is dry anyway. Stuffing wasn't nice to be honest. They got it all wrong, way too many herbs, tasted like soap. Other than that... To start, I would like to be fair and say that I have eaten at The Fox & Pelican many times, and have always been impressed with the food and service, which made my recent experience all the more disappointing. My wife, son and I went for Sunday lunch yesterday, and my eye was taken by Crispy Pork, which was described as containing soy and chilli. I therefore expected to get some pork that was crispy, with some fairly punchy and aromatic vegetables as an accompaniment. Well, the pork may have been crispy at some point in the past, but when it reached my table it appeared to be coated with some sort of soggy flour and breadcrumb mixture. The accompanying vegetables were over cooked, retaining no crispness whatsoever, and so bland that they appeared to have been boiled for several hours in unsalted water. Chillis or soy had clearly never been anywhere near the dish. I ate the meal because I was hungry and it wasn’t actually inedible. I made my disappointment known to the staff, who apologised, saying that they had many trainees working there. A great pity that the author of my lunch fell into that category. I didn’t expect not to pay, as I had eaten it, more fool me, but I did think a complimentary pint would have made amends. However, nothing was forthcoming, and unfortunately my previous certainty of being able to go to the Fox & Pelican for a very good meal has now been lost.

Nice local pub with great seating indoors and outdoors. I was there on a Sunday and the menu is slightly different, essentially more Sunday roast options. I had the vegan options, they only had 1 starter/sharer and one main, which was a burger. There are a few side options, which were fine. Service was good and food arrived in a timely fashion. Side note, mobile reception is bad in this area which may be a blessing but they do provide WiFi. My friend enjoyed his roast and my vegan meal was fine but nothing exceptional.
