The Fox & Hounds in Winchester

Popped into the Fox and Hounds, Denmead for an impromptu roast. The landlord, Chris, was very accommodating and although they were busy and we were just passing through, they made space for us. We had wonderful roast pork and beef dinners. Loads of cauliflower cheese which was gorgeous too! Couldn't fault the team, really friendly staff and a wonderful atmosphere. The landlord shared he had some exciting plans for the place and wanted to deliver quality food. Based on our visit I’d say he’s doing an amazing job! We will definitely book ahead next time though as think he’s going to be really successful and very busy. Adding a bit of an edit on here. We went in again today in October as we enjoyed our meal so much before. The service was crazy slow this time. Table booked at 415 and didn’t receive our mains until 530. What made things worse was after a hour and a quarter of waiting three of us who ordered roasts didn’t have Yorkshire puddings as they had run out (we were surprised by this as not a difficult recipe esp given the time we had waited). The staff were very apologetic and discounted our drinks but we were left feeling a little sad. Overall a lovely meal again well cooked and great portions just very slow service and running out of food simply isn’t what you’d expect having booked a table for a set roast menu.

Had a great evening at the Fox and Hounds. The food was absolutely delicious and the young guy who served us and ran the bar was extremely kind and polite. The pub itself is welcoming and has a great, cosy ambiance. Great service and great food

What a great pub restaurant We visited the Fox and Hounds and few weeks back and used the back room for a family reunion Friendly staff and the food was really well done and compliments to the kitchen staff as well 👌 There were about 35 of us and and everyone pulled together to feed us all 😋 If you out that way. it's well worth a visit, great food and drink, very welcoming, credit to you all Keep it up everyone 🥳 John X

Had probably the BEST Sunday roast I've ever had in a pub today... absolutely will return here !

Considering I live down the road, last night was my first visit to this amazing community pub. Mondays and Tuesdays they have a two or three course set menu. My boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal there, excellent friendly staff and atmosphere, food very tasty and I had the best lime and lemonade made proper. Free parking but can get a bit tight in the car park but that proves how fantastically popular it is x

The Fox & Hounds is a little country pub located just outside of the village of Denmead. The pub has ample parking for customers. The menu is very nice and a special board is also available. The food is well cooked and the presentation was good. The cost was about average and was not over expensive. The service was very good and the atmosphere was also good. Being a Tuesday evening the pub was quiet but I would imagine that at weekends it would be quite busy. I will certainly be visiting again.

Arrived at the pub for lunch at 12.45pm only to be told you were full. The front of the pub was empty with 6 tables free. The barmaid told us 'we're really popular now, so you need to book". No suggestion of have a pint and I'll see how long the wait may be. We've been praising this pub for the quality of food and service for a while but not now. We were welcomed down at The Chairmakers.

I have been going here with my golf partners for about a year and found the pub to have excellent beer, food and service. The pub had a great atmosphere. Today we visited well before 1pm and were told they were not serving food because they were "Too busy". This was bizarre since the front of the pub and the garden were empty. We were offered no alternative, no "Can you wait". We went down the road for an excellent meal and drinks. We will not be going back

The new owners gave a great reception, the food was exceptional, and buzz about the place still existed. Would not hesitate to give a great review. Can't wait to eat there again

Enjoyed a fantastic meal. The food was great and so was the service. Well done to all. Just concerned that we wanted a table for 7pm but when we booked, we were told there was no availability for that time as it was full. We had to book for 6.30pm which meant more of a rush to get out. Whilst we were in the restaurant we noticed that it was not as busy as we were led to believe. Perhaps we could have had our original request for 7pm after all?

Came for a late Sunday lunch while the sun was out. Just missed the food service by about 15 minutes, the Owner Chris went out of his way to make sure we still got served some food even though we were late (by no means had to do it). The food came out very quickly and was absolutely delicious, some of the best pub grub we have had! All of the staff are friendly and smiley. Really lovely pub to visit if you are in the area. Highly recommend!!

I really enjoyed my vegetarian burger, chips and coleslaw with halloumi cheese. The staff were excellent - friendly, helpful and chatty. The owner recognised my Mum from previous visits on his way over to the kitchen, and came over and chatted to us first. Very varied menu choice - different to other pubs, and freshly prepared. Would highly recommend and will visit again.

We have visited The Fox and Hounds pub in Denmead twice for lunch, and our experiences have been mixed. During our first visit, we ordered the ribs and a cheeseburger. The ribs were fantastic, served as four massive pieces in a delectable sticky sauce. However, the cheeseburger was quite the opposite; it was undercooked, potentially cooked from frozen, resulting in an unpleasant jelly-like texture. It was inedible, but to their credit, we received a refund. We hope that others do not encounter the same issue. Our second visit saw us sticking to the ribs, which we had enjoyed previously. Unfortunately, there was an issue with consistency. This time, there were fewer ribs, and the sauce had changed to what seemed like a red wine sauce, lacking the sticky texture we previously enjoyed. While the ribs were still served with salad and fries, there were numerous raw spring onions scattered on top. This was not mentioned on the menu, and while I had no problem eating them, my wife dislikes raw onions and found this addition unappealing. The Fox and Hounds is a community-saved freehouse with significant investment. While we found the drinks satisfactory, the inconsistency and quality of the food left us disappointed, and we have decided not to return for meals. Overall, the atmosphere and drinks are commendable, but the food, unfortunately, fell short of expectations.

My wife Natalie and I went here for a meal for the first time since Chris & Aimee took over. We were absolutely blown away. Lovely welcome, great busy vibe in the pub. Service was excellent and food was exceptional! We had the halloumi fries and Pork belly to start, steak and chicken burrito for mains, then sticky toffee and chocolate fudge cake for desert. Gutted I missed out on the Toblerone cheesecake (would love to see that as a regular). Anyway, not only were the portion sizes generous but the food was hot, tasty and just ticked all the boxes. Reasonably priced as well. Couldn’t ask for more. Lovely that Chris took the time to walk around and chat to customers. We won’t hesitate to go back and will be recommending it to others! Thanks to Chris, Aimee and the staff for a lovely anniversary meal - look forward to coming back again soon!

Possibly the nicest pub in Southern Hampshire!

We had to wait a while for our food ( the landlord did apologise)but it was worth it. The food was outstanding, all cooked freshly. We only had a starter and main course as we were too full up fo dessert.

Just popped in for a quick drink during an evening bike ride. Very friendly staff, good beer and pub and outdoors was clean and tidy. Definitely be going back and staying longer next time.

Went yesterday, kitchen was closed but they offered us a basket meal which was great. Loverly lady behind the bar, a real gem of a pub, love it.

We visited this lovely pub on Monday evening (25/3/24) and were greeted by a very friendly lady behind the bar. She was very patient with us whilst we messed about with trying to decide what we wanted from the menu. A few changes along the way, our meals arrived and we weren't disappointed. Food was amazing, lots of empty plates to prove it. Food is very good value and it was obviously prepared by a very good chef ! Puddings were equally wonderful. Great value for money. Lovely cosy place, we will definitely visit again for our next girly get together .

First visit to venue for a pre booked ten person get together. Advised to find table(no advise to as where)very good food and ambiance.felt unwanted by grumpy staff especially as it got late...felt we needed to leave as tables were sanitisedas we sat talking.

We called in today Monday 18 Dec 2023 around 12:30 and the pub was shut. We've been before many times and it is a nice cosy pub.

Lovely atmosphere, lovely staff and wonderful food at a reasonable price. Dog friendly too 👍

A lovely place, we went for a birthday dinner with 16 people. Obviously it was quite a big party, and we were pleasantly surprised when it didn't take too long for the meal to arrive. We did order in advance and they did get one meal wrong, but what I had was still delicious so it was ok!

Was very nice food excellent staff a tad Blunt and moaning about using there WiFi abd your phone!!! We also run a pub in the Midlands and when we are away we need to keep in touch with staff so being lectured on phone use is and was not welcome great food though nice place

Great place for our Sunday lunch, dog friendly, food and drink were excellent, staff are welcoming and service is perfect, couldn't find a fault, I particularly enjoyed the cooking of the calamari, so often it's disappointing, but here it was perfection, I also liked the choice of Roasts, all long, slow cooked, things that would take time and effort at home, lamb shank, pork belly and I chose the Brisket, it was melt in the mouth, I would definitely recommend this lovely pub.

Food was fantastic, really tasty. Definitely be re visiting. Shame about the pork scratchings, upon seeing the brand i refused them.

More muted pub experience, discreetly situated at the 'elite end' of Denmead. Nothing showy or grand but relaxed with polite and courteous service. Not an extensive choice available but food all the better for that. Excellent on both occasions I've been here. Will revisit..happily. Visited again today 11/05/23. Fairly quiet. Enjoyed nice Estrella lager and excellent meal ( which in truth I have tried before). Mushroom gratin really tasty as starter. Then their shepherds pie... really delicious, in fact best I've had. Food is fresh and perfectly cooked with slightly crunchy veg underneath and just enough peppery heat and mint to complement. Little cheese added for lovely flavours all round.. Finally Affagato which is nice too. Ameretto ice cream and espresso is a winning combination though whilst the liquer is nice on its own, I've eaten this elsewhere with ameretto biscuits and the bit of crunch adds a delightful change of texture. ..But nice anyway... I think these dishes are the best I've tried in the pub. Recommended Try for yourself. X

Lovely well cooked and good value lunch time pub food. Slow cooked pork ribs were superb, with quality crispy onion rings. Delightful young waitress was helpful, calm and pleasant. Topped off by a well kept pint of Butcombe bitter. Would definitely visit this excellent peaceful country pub again.

Great little traditional pub with very friendly staff. They have a standard pub menu, have now tried a few of the dishes and they are all good quality and tasty. Would recommend for those looking for a cosy pub a few beers and some great pub food.

Had a nice evening here. Didn’t start well, we ordered cocktails and they were out of a can and weak, need to bin them🤮. But then went to the restaurant, ordered food and the starters were lovely. Now take this from a married couple that can cook well, so our standards are high… main course special stake with peppercorn sauce was lovely and the chips / fries top class, the seafood lasagna was disappointing, no evidence of seafood, chef said if you put seafood in whole it goes rubbery so he blended it, granted , get that, Unfortunately all that could be tasted was sauce and chilli,, but s/b lumps of salmon or something, it wasn’t horrible but we expected more. The chef / maybe owner graciously took that of the bill, we had more drinks and a nice bottle of wine , desert. It’s not what you do when the goings good, it’s how you behave when there’s a bump in the road, think we gave a 15% tip so gives you an idea that it’s decent from picky reviewers . Well done, will come back again. Overall would still say 4.8 out of 5. 👏👏

Very friendly meals very good will go back

I hadn't been to this place for YEARS until today. I remember it well as one of the places we used to meet up in our early twenties. Great pub back then. So I was pleased to hear from my mum that it was on good hands again and she had heard good things about it. We booked for lunch the next time I was able to pop down to visit. The layout has changed, but definitely for the better. It looks smart, bright and cosy too. The food was excellent. We had scampi, whitebait, calamari to start, a decent glass of sauvignon blanc, and a lovely Hampshire rump steak for main. The specials board was excellent and the daily menu was also replete with a good range of options. (As a father of a child with coeliac disease, it was also really good to see the attention paid to gluten free options). The food arrived promptly, the atmosphere was nice and the service was excellent. Our waitress was likely on one of her first few shifts, and had to ask frequently for the answers to our questions, but she was efficient and always found out anything we asked. I might be wrong, but I think this pub was taken over by the local community. I do hope it is a success. It deserves it.

Nice place to eat. Very small car park. Pays to book ahead food excellent and nicely presented. Staff friendly and attentive. Well worth a visit.

Quiz night was enjoyable. We came as first timers and will be back 😊 Staff are friendly and welcoming. The furniture is comfortable. We just got a little hot!

The Fox & Hounds is one of my favourite places to go to for a pint of Guinness but has little to no vegan options on the menu.

Lovely Staff, Great food and clean toilets what more can you say? We went here last night for an evening meal. Really nice to find how nice the place looked and how clean the toilets were, which is always a good sign. Car parking was a bit tight, but if you have a small car it’s easy. Staff greeted us and said that our table was ready for us. My wife had the chicken and I had the “Pie of the Day” so please that I did. One of the best meals that we have had in a long time, and all for a very fair price. We are going to book to come back here next week again and bring my brother and his wife as well. Only wish that I could give them some "More Star's".

Fish and Chips I would rate as poor, the batter was soggy, and chips unless mistaken were frozen, so not a pleasant experience.
