Being relatively local I had never been to the Fox and Grapes before but did so on the recommendation of a friend. However his recommendation did not meet my expectations nor my families. None of us are hard to please but this fell well below what was expected. No menu to look through only items on a blackboard where you would usually expect to see "specials". The blackboard is not that big so the choice of food is very limited. Tables were not laid up with cutlery or condiments so we were unsure where to sit. Food was ordered at the bar but delivered by a waitress together with the cutlery. The food itself was poor - Gammon etc was more like Ham, Egg and Chips with no trommings. Pork Terryake and rice was mostly strips of grissly pork and Lasagne was not much better than could be bought as a meal for one at any Supermarket. However on the plus side the chips were good. I'm sorry but we shall not be returning but I hope things improve as I'm sure with a little more effort they could.

Having read recent reviews we decided to dine there and what a good choice. If you're after a gastro pub,(often over rated in my experience), this it isn't but if you want good wholesome food, cooked well at a reasonable price within a friendly pub and attentative staff, please visit here. It has an excellent beer garden as well. Our choices, Tariaki pork, scampi, sausage / chips, gammon with egg and chicken curry were excellent. The owners were welcoming and the atmosphere of a local pub pleasing. The menu is extensive with plenty of choice with many veggie options. Highly recommended.

Popped into this lovely pub sadly on our last day of holiday. All classic pub grab was available, and a host of beers to choose from. The owners are very welcoming and attentive. With nothing too much trouble. We had the beef chips and chutney, and veggie lasagna both were hand made. This place is worth a visit run by a lovely couple. We will make a point of going there when next in the area.

We visited the Fox and Grapes based off the recent trip advisor reviews as a group of 8. We all ordered a range of different meals all of which were home cooked and told local produce. Everyone enjoyed their meal and were treated with kindness by Linda. The prices were more than reasonable and they had a great selection of drinks to choose from including Devon cider. Would definitely recommend to others as was a lovely end to our holiday here!

Booked a table after looking on line at the GF options. Didn’t tell my husband that there would be quite a choice. He was expecting no starter and then dry steak ‘coz the sauces contained flour. He had the baked Camembert, something he has'nt been able to have in a restaurant, since being diagnosed with Coeliac disease and then the trio of lamb. The spring roll combination works and the stroganoff was very good. Portion sizes were good.Next time we won’t have starters so we can try out the dessert selection :-)

We went for an early evening supper on a midweek evening during our stay in a Lifton Hotel. The pub was well reviewed. When we arrived there was just a couple of drinking customers in one corner. The menu was very wide and we ordered from the choices some of which were a little overpriced for a very basic pub.We had a couple of drinks and our food arrived. The meals were adequate although not as good as the reviews suggested. The main issue for us was the constant foul language coming from the other two customers - every second word began with an "f". We are far from priggish but this constant barrage of foul language is not our idea of a pleasant evening. We ate up quickly and left. We will not be returning.

We didn’t know what to expect. We had Googled pubs that did food for Eat out to help out, when we were in Devon. We checked the website and the reviews and thoughts why not! Then we arrived, the original pub was so quaint, authentic and full of character. We were shown to the restaurant. The restaurant was in the village hall. A weird but wonderful mix of tables, chairs and ragroll painted walls. We felt out of place, but in our eyes, as long as the food was good, the decor didn’t matter! Then the food arrived! 1 starter and 1 main! We had ordered two starters. The breaded Brie was awful, the crust was soaked in old dirty cooking oil! We sent it back. The next starter came, chicken goujons.... they were deep fried in batter and accompanied by the oil they were fried in.At this point we refused all of our food and asked for the bill. The waitresses were wonderful, helpful, embarrassed and very apologetic.Sometimes we should judge a book by its cover!

I’m sorry but since reopening we have consistently been let down by both the food and the service.Whilst the barmaids have been great, there has been lots of confusion over opening hours - google and Facebook have said they’re open but on arrival they are closed.... whilst there was a sign outside saying open! When we have ordered food there has been faults - overcooked fish and chips, undercooked steak, inconsistent mac n cheese bites (which we are convinced they come frozen from Tesco!)Don’t get me wrong, we love the pub, the location and the garden and would hate to see it close again... but the kitchen needs Rose back and they certainly need to review prices for the quality of food.... it’s gastro prices for an average meal at the moment and really putting us off coming in to eat now, whereas before we would come here all the time for ease and enjoyment. Lifton NEEDS to Fox and Grapes... PLEASE can you address the issues and quality and her back to being the best eatery within the area?Also... bouncy castle was always a huge winner!!

We had dinner there one evening whilst staying nearby. We ate inside to the right of the bar. It's not a trendy pub and it was a quiet evening. The bar lady was very friendly and the food was delicious. Our choices were sirloin steak (beautifully cooked), with onion rings, peas, tomatoes and chips - a huge serving and duck breast with red wine jus, wilted spinach, cherry tomatoes, new potatoes and peppers I even managed sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream. Would go again.

A catalogue of errors meant we did not have the greatest experience at the fox and grapes - which was a shame as some of the food was really rather good.We had phoned ahead to book a table for the nearest pub to where we were staying that would be dog friendly, however on arrival we were in doubt that the pub would offer what we wanted. The outside of the pub didn’t look welcoming and the bar area was dated and tatty. Bar staff were polite but not terribly helpful and a bit unprofessional. We had made a reservation which bar staff didn’t seem to have any knowledge of. We were not shown to a table but told to sit in the bar, We were told by bar staff it was very busy in the beer garden when we asked. Our table was not laid when we sat down, or even after one of the starters arrived.Waiting staff did not know what items were or were not available which led us to order a pie and mash and then one of our party had to change their order. The kitchen staff...A starter arrived after we had sat down for one person out of our table of six “because it was ready” with the other starters arriving in 40 minutes. Bearing in mind 2 of these were bread and olives...The bread and olives had to be sent back twice. This was stated on the menu as artisan bread olives and a selection of dipping oils and balsamic vinegar. What arrived looked like two bits of hovis, some very small and old looking olives of not very good quality that looked like they had been sat in a jar for several decades and the brine from the olive jar in a dish. There was no balsamic vinegar. Everything in this meal was really salty like the bowls had been used to catch brine before serving. It did not taste good. I was not happy to pay 6 pounds for this meal. If you run out of bread - it’s absolutely fine to say that an item is unavailable - we could have ordered something else instead - especially as the creamy garlic mushrooms were completely delicious. Onto the mains - the hunters chicken and chips was delicious (but the cheese should have been melted)But my dining companions were not happy with the pie which they said tasted like tinned stewing steak. When we came to pay the card machine was not working - instead of checking this the bar maid proclaimed “card declined” to my friend loudly, twice, for everyone in the bar area to hear. As we were leaving we could hear the bar staff talking about what a state the gents toilets were in and how disgusting they are. Maybe go and clean them up instead of proclaiming this to the whole pub??In summary - we could overlook the pub not having some items, or even a mistake with one of our meals (especially given it was a busy bank holiday weekend) but we can not overlook the terrible and unprofessional service from the bar staff, and the abysmal starter. We would recommend hospitality training of bar staff - they did not understand or anticipate our needs. I am afraid after this experience we will not be making a return visit, but hope that the above points will help to identify issues that need sorting.

Went to Lifton for some fishing and couple of days break, spotted the Fox and Grapes, the last time we were there and thought it was closed, but surprised to see it was open. had a lunch and dinner on 2 different days, both were excellent, really great food and great value, lots of gluten free options and willing to adapt menu to accommodate, staff were really great and friendly and helpful, couldn't do enough to put you at ease, lovely spaniel to keep you company if no one was in, definitely go back when in the area. Popped in for a lunch, a Dinner and coffee, on 3 separate occasions great each time.

A very unwelcoming landlady, very rude and unhelpful. Asked for a glass of water from the barmaid as a member of our party was unwell and got told where to go.

A fantastic Sunday roast with choice of 3 meats and all the trimmings, extensive choice of fresh puddings with custard. Also has a well stocked bar with friendly laid back atmosphere. Seating in the old refurbished town hall with loads of original features. A big recommendation for this local gem.

This place was recommended by some locals, However I think the fish batter was NOT the best. Sorry but it didn't taste nice. Partner had the Curry and that was not the most appealing. The Naan was like a bit of Cardboard. Cheap, but needs some work in the kitchen.

The pub is a traditional old English pub, not very big inside but full of character with a good ambience. Based on the Trip Advisor reviews we decided to eat there one evening and both had the lasagna. It was well presented with a side salad and some lovely garlic bread. It wasn’t to our taste though as the lasagna had a thick layer of something on top which didn’t melt as cheese should and if it was the white sauce then it wasn’t runny either. The meat underneath was very tasty so we just left the topping. My sticky toffee pudding was a disappointment as the sponge was hard. I have had this problem myself at home when I have left the pudding in the microwave too long which is what I guessed must have happened. It came with plenty of custard but I was unable to eat it and had to return it to the kitchen. The staff offered to replace it with something else but I decided not to bother. My partner had the lemon tart which was apparently very nice. The staff were very pleasant and I would return to check out some of the other interesting sounding options on the menu if we lived nearer. I think I was just unlucky with my choices that night.

The place in which we had a group meal was in the building adjacent, but part of,the fox and grapes. It kind of looks like a small town hall, inside and out.It is very well decorated and the tables were presented very well, quaint table runners(wallpaper). We all had the Carvery. It was well organised and the food tasted great, although the beef was not cooked enough for me so I chose to have the turkey.Fantastic choice of deserts.Although my husband thought it strange to have chocolate sponge in the trifle.I had Eton mess and was surprised to have some quite hard sizeable pieces in it.The staff were very welcoming and polite.

We visited the pub for an evening meal. We loved the quirkiness and the ambience. When we visited, there was an electric flame fire working. A nice log fire would have been perfect. The serving staff were friendly and obliging. We ordered two meals off their inviting specials board. My wife's salmon was delicious, I understand. I ordered chicken on a mushroom sauce. Both meals were served with more than one veg, a welcome feature which seems to be unusual in restaurants these days. However, I have to report a disappointment with my chicken. It was very rubbery, difficult to cut and very chewy. I'm not sure the culinary reason for this. We mentioned this at the end of the meal. Like most Brits, we are reluctant to make any fuss. Perhaps I should have. It should be noted the pie I had my eye on was no longer on the menu, which is why I'd gone for the chicken. I hope this was just an off day.

Whilst entertaining important business associates I stumbled upon this fine establishment. Nestled in the heart of the town, this spectacular restaurant took us by surprise. The atmospheric lighting, the carefully curated decor and the maitre d (I believe was called Ben) was extremely welcoming. The owner, Oliver, was very friendly and very informative about the origin of the Michelin grade menu and had a charm that was not wasted on my party.
