The Fox at Willian in North Hertfordshire

Once again, I had a lovely meal at The Fox. Delicious roast beef with all the trimmings, followed by vegan fruit trifle. The ‘cream’ was whipped coconut milk. What a great dessert. Well done to the chefs. Thanks to Milly, our waitress. Polite and efficient as ever. What a lovely Easter lunch. Eggsellent. Oh dear.

There for our first anniversary. Enough people there on a Monday evening to give some atmosphere. Not cheap but that's partly why I chose it. Good food with great service from Millie primarily. Croquettes and duck liver parfait starters: croquettes a generous helping, tasty, parfait less generous but enough, especially in view of the subsequent courses, subtle taste. Mains: venison and venison ragout, generous portion, very tasty, belly pork generous portion also very tasty. Extra portions of paprika+garlic roast potatoes and truffle+parmesan fries: both enough for two and very tasty. I particularly liked the fries, the truffle+ parmesan shavings taking them to another level. Desserts: cherry+apple pie with whipped custard (looked lovely, custard tasted excellent), raspberry, lemon and lime sorbets one scoop each, in order of preference, but all very good. We will be back.

Really disappointing, family 80th birthday, went for Sunday lunch waited over an hour for our food. We had elderly relatives and children with us too was was difficult. Starter menu lacking choice . Fish dish was dry and Luke warm. The apple /cherry pie was not a pie more a battered wrap similar to fast food chain desert ! Will not be returning or recommending. Was more expensive than most pubs in the area too.

The venue is clean, tidy, staff are brilliant, particularly Henry, he went above and beyond. I was disappointed in my food but the other adults seemed to like theirs and the children loved theirs. I was also disappointed in the limited menu, and the prices have increased a lot. Overall we did have a great night, and I will go again just order something different.

Before I get into criticising the extortionate, awful food, I should big up the positives of this place. There is neat parking – though not enough of it. The décor is nice, as is the ambiance. The staff were brilliant. The artworks are very fox themed. I photographed only a small proportion of them – all foxes but for one badger orgy that seemed a little out of place. However, if all the badgers were happy to pose like that, who am I to criticise meles art. While we waited for our orders, we were presented with cubes of oily bread. This was by far the best food I had all evening and there was only one lump each. I then had the calamari starter. This was absolutely revolting, very much the worst examples of this delicacy that I have ever encountered. Considerably over-fried, bitter and dark. It didn't even smell nice and was a very long way from the lightly battered elastic bands of fond memory. I had been planning to order the burger but I had the good fortune to see one brought to another table so, just in time, I switched to the fish and chips. The fish was nice but the batter terrible. I had to painstakingly extricate the lovely flesh within. They had gilded the lily on the mushy peas and come up a little short on the chips. Unlike the fish and the calamari, the chips could have done with a little longer in the frier. I decided to quit while I was behind and not order a pudding. Some of my friends pressed on undaunted and I got to see that I would have been as disappointed as I had feared that I would be. Even in these inflationary times, I felt that we were charged about 20% to 25% more than the market rate for such fare. You shouldn't think that I didn't have a nice evening. My enjoyment was mostly down to the wonderful company of such good friends. We brought that with us. It would have been the same even if the food had been good and the chairs had been comfortable.

Stayed for two night's for my birthday weekend. The bed was very large and comfortable. Not much room on the small desk for a laptop. Only one small wicker chair provided. The heated towel rail did not work. The floor was not clean, and it was filthy under the bed. Evening meal: the haddock was delicious, chips were good but the pea 'puree' was not a puree, it was mushy garden peas with a vinegary taste that repeated on you. First breakfast: had most items from the full English breakfast. One of my poached eggs was almost hard-boiled, the other was completely hard-boiled and cold. We were not asked what bread we wanted, so white arrived and I had to order brown. The second morning I chose the eggs benedict. Muffin was not very fresh and again the eggs were overcooked - absolutely no runny yolk. My husband ordered the full English: this time the bacon was streaky not back bacon. It was all overcooked and the beans were not the same as the previous day. He couldn't eat them. I was given a dessert spoon that was filthy. It definitely was not worth the high price that we paid. I could not recommend it, and would not return unless the hotel had new management.

Very disappointed this morning, arrived for breakfast (table pre-booked). Ordered pot tea for two & eggs Benedict x 2, had to chase up breakfasts, took 45 mins to arrive. No one came to check on us to ask if all was ok/see if we wanted more tea/drinks, so I went to the bar to order another pot. There were 6-7 ladies in front of me, all ordered & paid for (individually) hot drinks…the last lady ordered a hot chocolate, next my turn I ordered a pot of tea for two & was told they were not taking anymore hot drink orders (???) I said ‘you’ve literally just taken orders for hot drinks’ & I was told no sorry, you can’t order any more hot drinks (??). I was told they were very busy in the other room with a private function (a wake), fair enough, but that was a pre-planned function, so you should have ensured you had enough staff to cope with that function as well as your other day to day customers…I seriously could not believe that a pot of tea for two could cause such a problem…so I paid my bill…went to my table & told my friend ‘sorry no more tea’, she also asked for a pot of tea, to be told the same ….11.30am & no hot drinks…seriously, you really need to re-think your priorities…if you can’t staff up for ‘private functions’ then don’t take regular bookings. Not good enough…(& not first time this has happened, Village Fete day staff were setting up in preparation & not enough staff & so customers in the pub were left hanging)… …sorry The Fox, normally love my visits, but sadly lacking…

Treated to a lovely birthday night out with my husband. Food was absolutely delicious and served with appropriate gaps between each course. Not rushed at all by the staff as I was enjoying a bottle of Prosecco to myself 🥂

I absolutely love coming to the Fox for breakfast, it’s by far the best menu of the day! The avocado with seeds on sourdough toast is absolutely delicious, and I wish it was on the lunch menu too. With a side salad it is so good. My dog always has a sausage too! Such lovely service as always, thank you Irmina and Jo!

We had roast beef with vegetables but my portion of beef was very tough and sinuey. I had asked for mine to be thinly cut but was handed one of the 4 portions without any recognition of my request.Difficult to cut through with the standard knife available. I complained about the meat and the waitress said it comes in to the kitchen already sliced. That suggests it is not necessarily cooked as a whole side of beef which if true is disappointing. The cost of the two portions was fully refunded and when asked what future offerings would be like was told that alternative supplies or suppliers would be investigated. Very disappointed. We have been coming here for many years but the standards of their food offerings have gone down in my opinion while prices have increased.

Excellent food and service, before going I was worried it wouldn't feel value for money but the chefs are clearly skilled and the produce is of excellent quality that I thoroughly enjoyed the whole meal and would love to return! Nice ambience in the restaurant, and the staff are all welcoming and friendly.

The Fox has a wonderful restaurant. The food is always amazing (taste / quality etc) and the staff always attentive. I would certainly recommend for couples / family meals. My wife and I have visited many times over the years, and continue to enjoy eating at the Fox.

We took my 81 year old Dad and Mum for his birthday. Party of 6 plus two children for Sunday lunch. Disappointing is the best way to sum it up. We all arrived on time and seated straight away. Ordering first round of drinks was efficient and ordering starters/ mains. The starters arrived in good time and were enjoyed. Then we just sat there and waited. Had to flag down a waitress to get us another drink for those needing and then carried on waiting for the main course to arrive. When it did after an hour and 20 minutes having been seated the adults were all served theirs even though we asked for the children to get theirs asap. The risotto and fish mains was thoroughly enjoyed but for the 4 of us having the roast we were disappointed. The veg and gravy was beyond delicious but seriously let down with very chewy roast beef. We even struggled cutting it with the very blunt knives supplied and no offer of a steak knife. Not that it would of helped and once in mouth it ensured a bit of a work out. Throughout the meal we were never asked if everything ok and if any further drinks required. Mains completed we were brought dessert menu's which we decided against, and once when relayed to the waitress we were told we needed to leave within 10 minutes due to our table being needed for next guests - so we wouldn't in their timescales had time for a dessert anyway. Such a shame and used to be wonderful, will stick to the bar food from now on.

We were a group of 16 but were seated in the conservatory so were able to chat easily. Food was delicious and and children’s portions were generous (children were from 6 - 14). Staff very helpful and attentive despite being in an area slightly secluded from the main dining area. Wonderful birthday celebration.

It seems to me that a number of restaurants today pride themselves on what I would term “Twee” or boutique cuisine. For instance truffle peas with fish and chips. The taste of the truffle completely destroyed the taste of the fish. Why it is not possible just to have peas whether mushy or normal is beyond me. The reason I mentioned fish and chips is because it was the only item on the menu which I or my wife and friends had an inclination to eat. Only a few years ago this restaurant was superb with an excellent menu and was the place to go whether for special occasions or for just a lovely meal. Why these modern day chefs or owners think we want all this Twee and nonsensical fancy food is beyond me. I have to say this is not the only restaurant which falls into this realm. I have attended this place twice now,but I do not think the visit will be repeated.

This a great venue anytime throughout the year with lovely gardens and a lovely contemporary lounge and restaurant. Situated in a pretty village this pub/restaurant has a great atmosphere, friendly staff even dog friendly and wonderful food!!

We are occasional visitors to the Fox when visiting the area and it never disappoints ! Went for dinner on Saturday night and the food was excellent. Service friendly and helpful. Great evening

Second visit the The Fox, this time for a family birthday. Everything about the experience was outstanding. The food, wine and service was exceptional Millie was our main server and was effortlessly charming and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend to others.

Came for Sunday lunch at around 4pm with visitors from outside the area. Decided to sit outside as the weather was nice. The garden area is a beautiful place to sit normally but it looked really grubby with dirty tables and old food left on floor under tables. There is a huge issue in the area with bugs that bite at the moment, many customers were complaining to disgruntled staff. I appreciate it is not the fault of staff but getting a response of " what do you expect, there is a pond over there". Does not exactly express an interest in making the experience better. We orderd two roasts, two adult fish and chips and one child's. The food came in good time. The cutlery arrived 10 mins later after having to ask two members of staff. The Sunday roast looked beautiful, it was however stone cold. Both members of the party sent it back. Once returned it was hotter and the gravy tasted nice. I do not feel value for money. The fish and chips were hot and looked nice. I was really disappointed in the whole vibe of the place. Grated it was a Sunday afternoon but the staff were snappy and every request felt like a complaint. There was only one person I the garden area who was really nice, if it had not been for that member of staff I would not have stayed. He went above and beyond trying to deal with the disgruntled clients that afternoon. I did not catch his name, he was taking the orders on the Ipad between 4 and 6pm.

We stayed overnight in really excellent "garden" room which was well spaced and had every amenity. Food was excellent, staff were excellent, location was excellent. Overall, on average, I would say it was EXCELLENT.

The service, quality of the food and the atmosphere was amazing. I haven't been here for many years so was pleased to see their extended outdoor space. I'll definitely be back for a drink as well as a meal. I ate in the restaurant this time but the pub food going past looked amazing too!

A cheeky day of work, a cheeky lunch visit to the fox, enjoying the hot weather we are currently having. Sat outside in the sun with a pale ale. For starter we went for spiced chorizo sausage and buttermilk fried chicken bites, these where so good. Main courses we had buttermilk fried chicken burger and chimichurri steak ciabatta, so good, everything cooked to perfection, and good service👍🏻

Been here a few times , this time, seemed even more expensive and im afraid overpriced for my salad (which was missing croutons which were delivered after we asked). Still i dont think for the pricetag it was v.good.

Booked for dinner and decided to stay the night. Firstly the restaurant. Light and airy dining area. Young, energetic and helpful staff. The smoked salmon starter was excellent, and the lamb for mains is recommended. A little expensive at £135 for two with one bottle of wine. And now the accommodation. I cannot speak for the other rooms, but our room (no 6) was tiny, in fact, almost claustrophobic. That said the decor was modern and attractive, the en-suite was well appointed. If you are staying overnight, avoid room 6.

Beautiful new makeover. Bright , but super cosy. Roast dinner could’ve been a 9/10 but the roast potatoes need some work, possibly 5 mins in the oven to crisp back up after the initial batch cook. Would definitely revisit though.
