A really nice pub. Doesn't get full give starts because the staff were unsure if the gluten free options which didn't instill confidence. As it happens they had gluten free fish and chips which was superb, really very good. They had a menu of treats for the dog as well.

What a fantastic experience. Staff were attentive but not overly so. The setting is great being able to choose from sitting either in the snug opposite the bar or in the more formal restaurant. We chose the restaurant, which at 1:45 on a Saturday, was disappointingly quiet. Both my partner and I are veggie and there was a separate menu for our perusal. We chose the cheese and onion pie and broccoli steak. The pie was delicious and came with triple cooked chips, honey glazed carrots, cabbage and celeriac jus. A pot of delicious onion gravy completed the dish (meat gravy also available). The broccoli steak came with chips, roasted shallots and tomatoes, sides of homemade ketchup and aioli. Portion sizes were excellent and the freshness of the veg was the star of the show! It was all incredibly tasty. We chose two courses for £20 (3 for £24 also available) and opted for Eton mess and grilled pineapple on a granola and butterscotch sauce base. Once again, these were delicious and satisfying. All in all, a great meal for a bargain price. We've already told people far and wide and will definitely be back.

I should have known that this was going to match a previous experience as it all flooded back as we walked into The Fox after 12mths absence. Greeted with the most miserable front of house. I thought it was because we arrived 30 minutes before our booking. Sat peacefully at the well decorated bar with plenty of beverages on tap. We were finally ushered into a corner room that was was fit for dogs and their owners. It was a shame as when we booked the table online we requested a restaurant seating! Good to see we weren’t the only paying customers shunted into the dog kennels but they had the brains to refuse and leave when they stumbled over the dog bowls. Discussing amongst ourselves we also decided enough was enough and informed front of house we were leaving. Put it this way, she was not bothered!. Sorry I can not provide a food review as we didn’t get that far. The conclusion never again.

Have not been to this area before and visited with a friend for lunch. The Fox was lovely inside - lots of little areas so you are not sat on top of the next table, large patio doors looking out onto a garden that would be lovely ( if it ever stops raining) and it was spotlessly clean. A real fire made the inside welcoming , if just a tad too warm if you are sat next to it ! Not a huge menu but more than enough choice. Also a menu for vegetarians and children. We had the feather blade of beef and the pie. Both came with veg and mash ( or chips) . This was followed by Bakewell tart and ice cream. The food was some of the best we have had in a very long time. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They also have a small dresser that sells local foodstuffs ( honey etc), along with treats for your four legged friends. We are not locals unfortunately. We have nothing of this quality in this area - exceptionally good food at a very reasonable price. We'll be back !!

Food: took forever to come moderately warm, dry, crispy gammon and small mediocre sides for a ludicrous price, furthermore the portion sizes are ridiculous, you can get more at a carvery for less than half the price and better quality, the starters were ok atleast But drinks were more than double the retail price £3.50 per drink! That is scandalous I do not care if you hand it to me on a silver platter I would never pay that again! Service: while the employees came fast and did their job food service was extremely slow taking 40 mins after ordering to come Atmosphere: other than the kids crying which isn’t their fault, it was nothing special cant fault it yet it can improve Overall don’t come here just go to the carvery for a much more cheaper and enjoyable experience.

Very disappointing. Went with family on a Sunday, there was absolutely no vegetarian option apart from to have the roast without the meat (a bit behind the times in this day and age!). The service was incredibly slow despite there being a lot of staff on. They ran out of basic condiments like horseradish even though it was middle of the day. We had taken a cake in for one of our party and it took us asking 3-4 times for them to bring this out over the space of around 45-60 minutes which is just nuts. We started to think they’d just lost it and gone to get another! When they did eventually bring it, it wasn’t with the candles we supplied, but some old rotten ones they’d scuffled together. Really bizarre. We had to go up to the bar a few times to get drinks because we weren’t tended to, the red wine was stone cold which they said was because of a draft (?). Watch out on the bill they will charge you for that extra spoonful of gravy! Won’t be returning. The only reason they’ve got 2 stars and not 1 is because they had a nice fire going!

Bit of a disappointing visit yesterday - I usually love it here, but service was very slow and just generally a bit naff for a quiet Monday lunchtime. Extremely limited vegan options compared to what they’ve had previously - I could have a mix of 3 small sides and that was it. Bring back the vegan fish and chips! 🍟🐟 It wasn’t much better for vegetarians - the only option other than my picky bits was a pie dinner which you don’t always want at lunch time. We were on our own in the restaurant and felt like our server forgot about us a little bit. We had to go to the bar to ask to pay because we were in a rush after a loooong lunch that was only meant to be an hour. 1 burger & 3 sides took over 30 mins to come out (one of sides was freezing cold too), and 2 desserts took over 20 mins. With only around 5 tables in the restaurant, I wonder how long people are waiting on a busy Sunday service 🤯 The rest of the food was delicious though! At the end of the meal, 2 small roses and this food came to over £60… Think I’ll have to go somewhere else next time until the menu changes and service improves ☹️

We had a table for 6 booked for 7.30. At about 7.45 a waiter came over to ask if we minded waiting as the kitchen was somewhat overworked but they wouldn’t be long. They finally came back over an hour later to take the food order which was a very limited menu of 4 starter 4 mains and 4 deserts. . About ten minutes later we were taken through to a near empty restaurant where 2 of our party were told that unfortunately they had run out of the chicken parfe they had ordered and would they like to choose something else. They both asked for the pork cheek that the rest of the party had ordered the waiter replied unfortunately we don’t have any pork either. Both chose not to have a starter. The people that ordered the pork got their starters 10 mins later and we were all totally shocked with what we saw. It was the smallest piece of meat on a plate with a mushroom and some mead sauce. It was a mouthful at best. On top of that it was stone cold. The waitress came to clear the plates and asked if everything was ok we said no it was total rubbish to which she replied she would tell her manager. A few minutes later the star of the show arrived the famous fish and triple cooked chips that I had ordered at least 10 times before and it had always been really good. Unfortunately not this time. The chips were rock hard and although the batter was really crispy the fish was mushy like it had been in a freezer for 6 months. The Fox charge Hollywood prices for a local cafes quality of food and it will be the last time we go there.

We had a pre booked table for 7 people. We were asked to pre-order food (I guessed so they could make sure everything was in stock). We turned up and the first thing to be mentioned was that 3 out of 7 of us would need to change our request of dessert as they only had 1 manchester tart. They said we could choose after our main course though. When drinks were placed on the table, the waiters seemed like they were in a rush, as the drinks spilt slightly on the table, leaving it sticky. We mentioned this to a member of staff, who said they'd clean it right away... no-one ever did that. All the starters and main courses were amazing, no-one could fault any of the food, the plates were taken away slowly and afterwards we were asked if we'd like to see the dessert menu. We, of course, said yes and waited 30 minutes, to which the staff seemed to have forgotten we were there (bare in mind we were 1 of maybe 5 tables at the time). We then decided to look online for the menu as it didn't seem like it was going to come. I then went to the till to request that someone took our order. They apologised and came straight over. When the food started to come to the table (approximately 20 minutes later), the waiter realised no cutlery was ever given out, so went to get some. Overall, the food was great. Sadly, the service was substandard. Hopefully, this is rectified so the service compliments the food. You haven't lost us as customers but it'd be nice to see some changes (maybe some sort of senior waiter to keep things running smoothly).

Underwhelming. Visited due to recommendations from friends. Had a table booked for 5pm. Arrived on time to be told the table wasn’t ready (with no apology)and asked to take a seat in the bar area, of which there were none available. Had to stand in the middle of a busy bar with an 18 month old. As we sat at the table once it was ready, we were told 2/3 mains were unavailable so choices were more limited than usual. I then ordered some halloumi to start, this wasn’t available either and I didn’t fancy any others so missed a course. I ordered the beef burger for a main which was okay, priced steeply for what it was. Partner had the chicken roast and the little one had the goujons which they both liked. Nobody came to ask if the food was okay at any point. Following the main we asked for dessert menus which never came so we just asked for the bill, couldn’t afford to wait all night with a young child. The card machine was brought over for the bill much much faster than the dessert menus, make of that what you will. A shame really, only thing that was above usual pub grub was the price, which the food didn’t really warrant all in all. As we left we passed several members of staff, none of which said thank you or goodbye. Won’t be rushing back.

We were taken to our table which was near the kitchen hatch. Lovely lighting, nice and clean and lovely background music. Drinks were ordered. 1 bottle of wine and a pint of fresh orange and lemonade (they don't stock J2O). Ordered the meals. 1 starter Paté. 1 beef dinner and 1 chicken and leak pie meal. My wife asked if she could have Roast Potatoes. Bluntly told NO !! Drinks arrived. Wife said the wine was lovely, my pint of orange and lemonade is now in a smaller 3/4 pint glass. Paté came. Two small pieces of crumbly toast. No butter and a piece of Paté = £9. Not worth £6. Main meals very nice. Can't fault them. Midway through our meal with Lional Richie playing in the background the kitchen staff started playing garage music with all kinds of language being used in these so called songs !!! Meal finished, no one asked is everything OK? The bill came followed very quickly with card machine. Not giving any time to check the bill. After stalling the card machine i checked the bill. £8.70 for fresh orange and lemonade!!!! Charged for 1 pint of lemonade and 1 pint of fresh orange. When questioned, the lady ripped the bill off me and went to correct it. Now £6.70 for the 3/4 pint glass of fresh orange and lemonade. Still charging for a pint of lemonade and half fresh orange. The lady couldn't see that I've had less than a pint and being charged for a pint and half. Another place we will never visit. Absolute rip offs !!!!!

My partners rib eye steak was £26 which didn't include veg or sauce both of which was extra. Food arrived on cold plates. My chicken roast dinner was ok. Beef roast dinner was tough and fatty. The Yorkshire pudding was like a volcano. Within 5 minutes of recieving our dinner 3 members of staff came to ask if the food was ok. The cabbage was hard to eat because of the stalks. Compared with the fat Italian in burscough, I'd recommend that 10/10. Needless to say, we won't be eating there again. Very disappointed, considering we tried to get in the week prior and was told that it was fully booked. I can only hope that people had a better experience than we did.P.s. couldn't fault the staff, efficient and friendly and very understanding that my partner and I just wanted a quiet meal.

Not impressed !! My husband and myself went for a walk the other night and decided we would drop into the fox on the way home to have dinner and a drink. When we got there we asked for a table, there were about 3 couples in the pub. We were told there was a half hour wait, not a problem we said we would sit outside as it was good weather and have a drink while we waited. They told us they would come straight out with the drinks menu however 15 minutes later I went in and ordered the drinks myself. Then they came out with the menus, we couldn’t get over the rise in prices but decided to stay anyway. The manager came out and took our order and then asked if we were having a table inside or staying where we were. We wanted to stay outside and then I was told she had to take my bank card and keep it in a safe if I wanted to stay outside. ?????? It took me a little time as she walked away with my card to realise, I had to trust her with my bank card but I apparently look like someone who would do a runner after a meal. I was then handed a key ?? Was not happy my bank card was taken off me. There was no discussion no explanation as all staff including manager looked about 12. Service was basic they really had no idea how to interact with customers. The food came and honestly it was not good. Small portions and not great produce. I received my bank card back once we had paid up. We did look through the reviews and sadly it looks like the fox have made it more about their policies instead of the customers experience. Such a shame, we had been there once or twice before a few years ago and really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere, unfortunately this has really changed. Maybe they should have a look at what most of the reviews are saying and listen to their customers instead of arguing with them. We definitely will not be going back. £70 for 2 dinners and drinks is not good when the food is not up to standard and the nail in the coffin for me was taking my card. I’m a 47 year old professional what an insult and I’m sure it feels the same for the rest of your customers when they are asked for their cards.

Had a decent meal and was offered water for the table which we accepted. Checked the bill after and they charged £4 for the bottle. We asked for still water but the bottle came with a sparkling label on it so that's £4 for tap water! They should at least tell you that there's a charge - won't be coming back too pretentious.

Arrived and asked to be seated. Was given a choice of where to sit. Chose to sit in the bar area. Really nice place. Asked for a a smaller portion for an 11 year old and was told this wasn't possible as all orders are portion controlled, asked if we could not have the chilli ketchup on the Burger as she doesn't like it and told no as the owners run a strict no substitute rule. I explained that we didn't want it substituting just don't put it on. Again we were told no. Decided not to eat as this would be unfair on my daughter. When we discussed where we would go and that we would leave a review we were obviously overheard and then 'owner' came cover to us and asked was everything 'ok'. She started to explain that they don't substitute as their costs are rising and it could be an issue for them. She explained that they can change bits but not chips for mash, unsure what this has to do with removing chilli ketchup? At no point did she actually offer to cater for my daughter and actually made us feel kind of uncomfortable. The service is normally really good and so too is the food, just a shame one bad experience can make such an impact

Booked a table at 9am for 12pm on the same day. Ended up having to cancel because my grandma wasn’t well. Cancelled at 11am and got charged £40. Absolutely disgusting.

Paid for the deposit in the morning, cancelled and then charged us £40. There has to come a point when companies can't use covid any longer. We understood why initially but we're in 2023 now and we'd understand if it was a busy booking period which was in place for weeks or if it was a large booking but it was booked 2 hours before the actually meal for 4 people. There is protecting your business and then there is an abuse of a term with no reasonable judgment in place and using something that started 3 years ago and effectively ended over a year ago. It's such a shame as it seems like a nice pub, but a toxic, pedantic culture must exist for you to take deposits in that manner. I'm sure you would say, we have to protect our business, but covid is over now and cost of living crisis is here and everyone is suffering. I see you mention about it being unethical picking and choosing people to return their refunds. I think it's far more unethical taking money off people for no food in 2023.

Awful customer service! The manager and owner are rude - even though we chatted to the owner a lot when the pub was re opening after covid. We've dined here many times and supported throughout covid with takeaways. The new booking system is dreadful, can't book for over 6 on a Sunday. When daughter had to cancel at short notice on Mothers Day (due to her 6 month old having covid and spending the night before at A and E) they were charged £30 for late cancellation. They only seem interested in taking your money and there are other pubs in the area with much more pleasant staff.

A lovely pub in Bickerstaffe. The menu is varied and provides good choices for everyone.. My favourite always has to be the Steak and ale pie.. Amazing value, yummy pie too.. Tasteful decorated, but still has the charm of a traditional English pub.. The service from the staff is fantastic, polite and tentative to your needs. Great atmosphere..There's plenty of parking . Make this your choice if you've never been here before, you won't be disappointed.

Called into here on Saturday night with friends. Lovely pub, sat down and got nice and comfy. Started drinking only to be told we had to move because someone wanted to eat there and they had booked. Fine, but maybe think about putting a reserved sign on the table. Also, I am no prude, but the girl servers skirts are none existence. It bothered me (and I am fine, it may not bother them) but sitting there you can see some blokes eyes popping out when ever they went passed or bent over.

Unfortunately NO longer dog friendly!! Canalside pub with views across what was at one point Martin Mere, England's largest lake. Inside, was a good pint - don't know now as I couldn't get in due to the dog (or into the bar) 🙄. And, no, I wouldn't have expected to go into the restaurant with a dog.
