The Fox at Roby Mill in West Lancashire

Not knowing much about this Pub/restaurant we travelled from Liverpool in hope. We were not disappointed. The welcome was warm and the atmosphere was relaxed, then came the food. The sharing starters were delicious, followed by their signature pies ( today’s was Chicken & Ham ) The pastry was a delight, Crisp and melting in the mouth with a perfect filling. Other delights included a delicious chicken burger and a lovely Fish and Chips. Even though we were all full after the mains, the knowledge that the desserts were also ‘home made’ led us to order a couple of Apple crumble Pies. Again, lovely stuff.The overall standard of the food was excellent, with everything made ‘in house’ and served with the enthusiasm it deserved. Well done “The Fox”, we will be back for another treat!

Amazing food at The Fox. Lovely vibe in the bar, lots of fox motifs around but all looks really tasteful. Food dis not disappoint at all, every bit of the meal was delicious and well presented. Drinks were good too, did a really well made espresso martini. Would definitely go back and recommend you try it.

I went here for a wake after a relatives funeral and whilst the day was sad, the Fox and the staff there made it much more bearable. I’ve eaten at amazing restaurants and many of the best gastropubs and I often eat at Gordon Ramsey at the Savoy Grill, and I would say the chips were better than the quality there. They were phenomenal. The pies were 10 out of 10 and the gravy was unusually excellent. The peas were nice but standard mushy peas that were tasty. The staff were excellent and the pub has a really nice exterior area and a great atmosphere. If you like pie and chips and gravy I would rate this as 100 out of 100, it was genuinely extraordinarily good and I could eat it every day.

Had sunday dinner to celebrate my mums birthday today. The food was absolutely superb. Everyone of us thought that it was the best roast dinner we had eaten in a pub/ restaurant before. The service was even better. Or mother is quite poorly and one of the waiters made the day extra social for her. He went over and above to make it memorable for her.. for that, we are all very very grateful x

What a find! We had dinner here with our kids during a long journey, and they simply couldn't have done more to make us feel welcome and meet the needs of our fussy eaters! Lovely food, friendly service, gorgeous decor and lots of luxurious touches like hand cream and single use towels in the bathrooms. Would go out of our way to visit again.

Our first time at The Fox at Roby Mill. My husband and I are Vegan and we came along with our son and daughter in law. The Fox offers a lovely, well thought out vegetarian and vegan menu. The staff are brilliant and take pride in answering questions about the ingredients in their dishes. The food was exceptionally good. A wonderful vegan starter of crispy sprouts, and then vegan fish and chips made with banana blossom. For a restaurant that is catering for everyone, the chefs have really pushed the boat out for the vegans and veggies. My son and daughter in laws meals from the main menu were also fantastic. All in a cosy pub with a great atmosphere. We will most certainly be back!

We had an amazing sharing roast today and it was truly delicious. The gravy and potatoes were so good! Highly recommend. They also let dogs in which was great!

I think it's a tad too expensive. We pop in regularly for coffee and bowl of chips. We can never get any chips because they have finished serving so we have an Americano and a small hot chocolate. It costs £8:45 Which is by far the most expensive coffee and chocolate.

My wife and I booked The Fox on a recommendation as she has Coeliac Disease and needs a Gluten Free menu. We visited with friends for an evening meal on a Saturday evening and the place was packed, so we were glad we pre-booked. We found all of the staff friendly and accommodating, and they ensured my wife was aware of the Gluten Free options available to her, of which there were plenty both with and without adaptations. The quality of food was exceptional: between the four of us we had the soup, the liver pate & the sausage roll for starters, the home made steak & kidney pie, lamb shank & burger for the mains and the lemon posset, sticky toffee pudding & the chocolate brownie for dessert. Everyone was totally full and there were no negatives whatsoever. The bill was even reasonable. Although we live in Essex and only visit occasionally, we will definitely be returning to the Fox in the future. Thank you all for a lovely evening!

Had a lovely meal here this evening and the whole team were great but a special mention for Jonathan who really went above and beyond to help my Granny and make her feel welcome. Really the best service we have had in a very long time! Thank you for a fabulous evening

Review your cancellation policy..... I never normally leave bad reviews, but it seems I'm not the only one who has had this problem. I was taken into hospital for an infection the night before my booking and although unwell and in pain on medication, still asked my partner to cancel our reservation asap. When I saw I still got charged I called to question and was told it was policy. Now I understand businesses love using this big 'Policy' word as if it's a law, but anyone with a brain knows it's under the manager discretion. I'm also not dumb that things like this are in place so you don't lose money, however... I know for a fact we cancelled with enough time for the table to be filled which I'm very sure you did on a busy Sunday, you would not have lost any money I'm sure. But if I had not shown or called up I would've understood. Most hospitality will not charge as long as you call to let them know within reason. Things like that make me just think pure greed and it's almost like "naughty naughty I'm taking £20 you fell ill and cancelled" As a business owner myself I very much know that long term loyalty over short term policy will go a lot further. Be better. We're all human.

What a fab place ...definitely be going again ....

Six of us visited on a Wednesday lunchtime for a family get together. The restaurant was very busy . The food was excellent as always and the service was also excellent. The staff were apologetic for the slow service which we didnt notice at all. We were first into the restaurant and last to leave, we felt so comfortable meeting there. Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed the food and commented on how friendly the staff were.

We visited The fox with Family 4 of us in total. Lovely pub/restaurant. On arriving we were told to order drinks at the bar first. Then we were taken through to sit down. We ordered starters and mains which both arrived very quickly. The food was amazing good portions and very tasty. The only downside then was that it seemed as if we were forgotten about. It took at least half an hour for the waiter to take away the dishes which was only half of them. As he'd asked if we would like dessert we presumed he went to get menus. Still it took another 15/20mins. As the children needed picking up from the sitter we had to decline. We were very disappointed with the service. There didn't seem to be any organisation very random. Also the guy that seemed in charge asked if we would like salt and vinegar with the mains. We are still waiting.

I wanted to leave a review today because the customer service I received at the Fox was outstanding! I called in late afternoon to have lunch with my son who’s only 3. The service from all the staff was great but Jonathan especially as he paid extra attention to my little boy and me. From swapping my little boys high chair so he would be more comfortable, getting me a steak knife so I could cut through my burger better and just genuinely chatting and getting to know us. At the end of the meal which was absolutely delicious! I noticed my little boy had had a accident and had to go change him in the toilets and Jonathan came running after us and brought me a towel to wrap round my little boy legs so no one would notice as I took him to the car after paying the bill. I forgot to leave a tip because of everything but I wanted to say thank you! I was moved by his genuine kindness and the fact that we didn’t feel at all any trouble to anyone! Incredible pub, impeccable service and fantastic food to match!

Outstanding Sunday Roast (Beef) with delicious meat, veg and jus, in a generous portion. Good selection of drinks and fine cocktails. Highly recommend but reservation certainly needed on Sunday as so popular.

We had steak & kidney pie and cheese & onion pie, it was covered in looked like tar, should have been red wine jus, it spoilt the full meal, did not complain at the time as my wife wouldn't let me.the starters where nice as was the staff.

The best lunch out I've had in a long time. Greeted by friendly staff and drinks offered then taken through to our table. They were busy which was lovely to see but the service was still incredibly attentive. I ordered halloumi to start followed by the steak pie and finished with the treacle tart. Each course was honestly gorgeous. The jus served with the pie will have me dreaming about it for days 😂. Portion size was excellent and the value for money incredible. The whole experience was second to none and I can't wait to add the fox to my regular list again x Thankyou for a lovely afternoon

If I could rate this 6/5 I would. Great service, friendly and attentive staff, good beer lineup, delicious food, wonderful for dogs. Lovely outdoor section. Ran out of adjectives but if this was my local, I'd probably never leave.

Ate here with my wife and son a few weeks ago. I found the food to be great and very tasty and the staff were very attentive. Great experience all round. We will definitely return

The best pub/restaurant in the area by far. Amazing food every time, staff are great, friendly but not intrusive. Always a great atmosphere. Gorgeous fireside seats, designated area for dogs and a great range of ales and wines, something for everyone. Highly recommend, we go as often as we can.

Great place , good food and a cosy atmosphere

A lovely gastro pub with delicious food and great service. The only reason I didn't give 4* for atmosphere is I have hearing aids and everywhere people have piped music which makes listening to those I'm dining with difficult.

This wonderful pub serves quality wine and an array of quality drinks and cocktails. The food is excellent and the service is both friendly and attentive. On our latest visit, we tried the 'Chippy Tea' night and were not disappointed! Lots of chip shop favourites were on offer on the menu. The dishes were very well presented and all of them were absolutely delicious renditions of traditional chippy fare. Can't wait for the next one! The price was very reasonable and our spend included drinks before the meal, two bottles of wine with the meal and a nightcap at the end.

Stopped in at the Fox today for lunch , food fantastic,staff brilliant and the place was very cozy and welcoming. Altogether a lovely place to visit day or night. Very highly recommended.

First visit but won’t be our last, very friendly staff welcome was very welcoming. The log fires were lovely very cosy. I had the fish and chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce and my wife had the soup of the day and the steak and brea cheese. We thoroughly enjoyed or lunch And are looking forward to our next visit.

We all had the beef roast and it was outstanding, deserts were scrumptious as ever and the atmosphere was lovely. A note reference accessibility; easy access to the front and there is a very clean and easily accessible toilet with patients to wash your hands, and towels to actually clean your hands. Beautiful.

Food is good, service good, nice place

They advertise a Vegan and Vegetarian menu yet the staff have no knowledge or understanding of how V food is prepared or cooked. It turns out they cook V food in the same fryers as meat fryers and used the excuse that it’s a small kitchen so they can’t have 2 fryers. Staff had an attitude and served the Vegetarian dish with fried food not ordered spoiling the whole meal.

Food is excellent friendly staff and a cosy place

Been twice and food and service very good! However, was so disappointed today 14/12/24, at just after one! We hadn't booked, I admit, though this had not been a problem previously; yet the young man on duty was very dismissive whilst offering to seat us in half an hour's time. This in an empty pub. Had it have been explained to us that several coach parties were due , we might have felt a little happier!?!

A perfect country pub, homely but classy, great food, lovely staff. Just wish it was close enough to be my local.

We were let down by our previous choice of establishment, for which we were very grateful, not only where we accommodated last minute, the food was excellent the atmosphere was lovely and the price reflects the quality food that was provided.l, you could tell it was fresh produce. This will now always be our first and only choice from now on. Used to go here 20 plus years, stopped going, but will be back now more often.

Booked a table for a family birthday. Booked over the phone and then was sent an email to confirm booking using my debit card details. I was told by the member of staff that “I would not be charged”: Due to the weather today I couldn’t make the booking, phone signal was down and when I did finally get through the fox was busy and couldn’t answer. I have now been charged £60 for a table of 6. I was not warned of this prior when I spoke to a member of staff on the phone. After speaking with them they told me they can’t do anything about it because I had “agreed” to the terms and conditions which is fair enough but who does these days. They need to be better with their communication skills when taking bookings.

Just had a roast turkey dinner from here. Was well impressed will be coming again soon.....any chance you could put anything on the tables very sticky but apart from that the food was bang on will be telling my friends to come here...

One of my families favourite places to visit for food. The food is always sublime, the staff are efficient with drinks & food orders. The open fires during winter make it nice and cosy, it’s great as well that it’s a dog friendly place.

Really enjoyed the food, a decent selection of drinks, the service was friendly but appeared disorganised when we first arrived, may be due to a number of new staff. Would recommend for a meal though.

A really nice pub. Doesn't get full give starts because the staff were unsure if the gluten free options which didn't instill confidence. As it happens they had gluten free fish and chips which was superb, really very good. They had a menu of treats for the dog as well.

What a fantastic experience. Staff were attentive but not overly so. The setting is great being able to choose from sitting either in the snug opposite the bar or in the more formal restaurant. We chose the restaurant, which at 1:45 on a Saturday, was disappointingly quiet. Both my partner and I are veggie and there was a separate menu for our perusal. We chose the cheese and onion pie and broccoli steak. The pie was delicious and came with triple cooked chips, honey glazed carrots, cabbage and celeriac jus. A pot of delicious onion gravy completed the dish (meat gravy also available). The broccoli steak came with chips, roasted shallots and tomatoes, sides of homemade ketchup and aioli. Portion sizes were excellent and the freshness of the veg was the star of the show! It was all incredibly tasty. We chose two courses for £20 (3 for £24 also available) and opted for Eton mess and grilled pineapple on a granola and butterscotch sauce base. Once again, these were delicious and satisfying. All in all, a great meal for a bargain price. We've already told people far and wide and will definitely be back.

We went for a 40th birthday party, there were 8 of us plus a dog. We were all served at once, the food was lovely all staff were friendly and efficient, very obliging and we had a great time, would recommend

I should have known that this was going to match a previous experience as it all flooded back as we walked into The Fox after 12mths absence. Greeted with the most miserable front of house. I thought it was because we arrived 30 minutes before our booking. Sat peacefully at the well decorated bar with plenty of beverages on tap. We were finally ushered into a corner room that was was fit for dogs and their owners. It was a shame as when we booked the table online we requested a restaurant seating! Good to see we weren’t the only paying customers shunted into the dog kennels but they had the brains to refuse and leave when they stumbled over the dog bowls. Discussing amongst ourselves we also decided enough was enough and informed front of house we were leaving. Put it this way, she was not bothered!. Sorry I can not provide a food review as we didn’t get that far. The conclusion never again.

This is a place with a good atmosphere, great food and attentive and friendly staff. Completely recommend and will go again, soon.

Food was very good. Particularly enjoyed the rhubarb creme brûlée. Only downside was the service was pretty slow, we actually ended up going to pay at the bar as our server had disappeared. What was odd is that we were the only people having food at the time!

Have not been to this area before and visited with a friend for lunch. The Fox was lovely inside - lots of little areas so you are not sat on top of the next table, large patio doors looking out onto a garden that would be lovely ( if it ever stops raining) and it was spotlessly clean. A real fire made the inside welcoming , if just a tad too warm if you are sat next to it ! Not a huge menu but more than enough choice. Also a menu for vegetarians and children. We had the feather blade of beef and the pie. Both came with veg and mash ( or chips) . This was followed by Bakewell tart and ice cream. The food was some of the best we have had in a very long time. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They also have a small dresser that sells local foodstuffs ( honey etc), along with treats for your four legged friends. We are not locals unfortunately. We have nothing of this quality in this area - exceptionally good food at a very reasonable price. We'll be back !!

Can't fault this place at all not recommended but was a find on Google one day. The staff are lovely and friendly and service is quick ... Menu is small which I have no problem with as still good selection food was impeccable not a single fault. Hands down nicest sticky toffee pudding I've ever had!! Final test can they pour Guinness again didn't disappoint. Will definitely recommend and be coming back

Food: took forever to come moderately warm, dry, crispy gammon and small mediocre sides for a ludicrous price, furthermore the portion sizes are ridiculous, you can get more at a carvery for less than half the price and better quality, the starters were ok atleast But drinks were more than double the retail price £3.50 per drink! That is scandalous I do not care if you hand it to me on a silver platter I would never pay that again! Service: while the employees came fast and did their job food service was extremely slow taking 40 mins after ordering to come Atmosphere: other than the kids crying which isn’t their fault, it was nothing special cant fault it yet it can improve Overall don’t come here just go to the carvery for a much more cheaper and enjoyable experience.

Very disappointing. Went with family on a Sunday, there was absolutely no vegetarian option apart from to have the roast without the meat (a bit behind the times in this day and age!). The service was incredibly slow despite there being a lot of staff on. They ran out of basic condiments like horseradish even though it was middle of the day. We had taken a cake in for one of our party and it took us asking 3-4 times for them to bring this out over the space of around 45-60 minutes which is just nuts. We started to think they’d just lost it and gone to get another! When they did eventually bring it, it wasn’t with the candles we supplied, but some old rotten ones they’d scuffled together. Really bizarre. We had to go up to the bar a few times to get drinks because we weren’t tended to, the red wine was stone cold which they said was because of a draft (?). Watch out on the bill they will charge you for that extra spoonful of gravy! Won’t be returning. The only reason they’ve got 2 stars and not 1 is because they had a nice fire going!

We chose The Fox for our first real date and couldn’t have chosen a more perfect venue….. from walking through the door….. the welcome.. the ambience….. the amazingly beautiful warmth of the place along with absolutely stunning food…… SO delicious! We were served by 4 different members of staff during our stay and they were ALL exemplary and made us feel so valued…. We can’t recommend The Fox highly enough and we will definitely bet returning time and time again…… PLEASE NOTE……. Table 4 is now our special table 🤣 Thank you all for making it so special Fiona and Jules ❤️.

The best Sticky Toffee Pudding I have ever eaten. Was worth the journey just for the dessert! Absolutely amazing and would return just for another bite of that sweet heaven

Staff are so lovely here. Really attentive, very pleasant, and they get on really well with each other it seems. Didn't eat, but the food looked great. Will be back for that.

Bit of a disappointing visit yesterday - I usually love it here, but service was very slow and just generally a bit naff for a quiet Monday lunchtime. Extremely limited vegan options compared to what they’ve had previously - I could have a mix of 3 small sides and that was it. Bring back the vegan fish and chips! 🍟🐟 It wasn’t much better for vegetarians - the only option other than my picky bits was a pie dinner which you don’t always want at lunch time. We were on our own in the restaurant and felt like our server forgot about us a little bit. We had to go to the bar to ask to pay because we were in a rush after a loooong lunch that was only meant to be an hour. 1 burger & 3 sides took over 30 mins to come out (one of sides was freezing cold too), and 2 desserts took over 20 mins. With only around 5 tables in the restaurant, I wonder how long people are waiting on a busy Sunday service 🤯 The rest of the food was delicious though! At the end of the meal, 2 small roses and this food came to over £60… Think I’ll have to go somewhere else next time until the menu changes and service improves ☹️

We had a table for 6 booked for 7.30. At about 7.45 a waiter came over to ask if we minded waiting as the kitchen was somewhat overworked but they wouldn’t be long. They finally came back over an hour later to take the food order which was a very limited menu of 4 starter 4 mains and 4 deserts. . About ten minutes later we were taken through to a near empty restaurant where 2 of our party were told that unfortunately they had run out of the chicken parfe they had ordered and would they like to choose something else. They both asked for the pork cheek that the rest of the party had ordered the waiter replied unfortunately we don’t have any pork either. Both chose not to have a starter. The people that ordered the pork got their starters 10 mins later and we were all totally shocked with what we saw. It was the smallest piece of meat on a plate with a mushroom and some mead sauce. It was a mouthful at best. On top of that it was stone cold. The waitress came to clear the plates and asked if everything was ok we said no it was total rubbish to which she replied she would tell her manager. A few minutes later the star of the show arrived the famous fish and triple cooked chips that I had ordered at least 10 times before and it had always been really good. Unfortunately not this time. The chips were rock hard and although the batter was really crispy the fish was mushy like it had been in a freezer for 6 months. The Fox charge Hollywood prices for a local cafes quality of food and it will be the last time we go there.

I’m here for a quiet drink, , lovely cosy pub but so many young people in here, apparently lots of staff having a drink at the bar and some of their language was disgusting! We also came in the week for a meal, although the food was lovely but we waited an hour for it to arrive and the restaurant was very quiet so would think twice about eating here again

Visited on Monday 15th January no bread with soup as on menu main meals small minimum amount of everything overcharged for wine more expensive than was on menu and not good quality would not return overpriced

Very slow service. Took 1.5 hours to get lunch. Entered at 1.15pm, orders taken at 1.45pm, food served at 2.45pm. The waiter did explained the chef was new and should have made us aware of the delays when ordering

Shocking tonight, fish bones found in son's miniature fish off children's menu...! Steak ordered medium/well done comes out rare..! Chicken/ham pie comes out no ham.! Blue cheese sauce ordered come with steak, comes out twice not blue cheese sauce, ordered 3rd sauce peppercorn sauce with brandy.. didn't taste of either, asked see manager young girl says can I help, explain everything young girl who apologises says not only people complain tonight new head. Food excellent, service spoilt the whole experience

Place was packed on Christmas Eve. Young bar staff managed to cope with the rush. Food in the restaurant was very good, small but adequate portions. Staff in the restaurant were excellent.
