I have to let it be known that this little gem of a pub is not only one of the prettiest interiors of any (of many!) pubs that we go to - it's beautifully decorated, it is also one of the cleanest, with staff being super quick to clean tables and seating areas as people come and go, which is no mean feat given that they are very welcoming of canine companions and that they are pub surrounded by many beautiful walkways. I've never seen it look for one moment anything short of spotless. I've been taking my weim pup to this pub since last Summer and they've seen her go through the stages of too cute to 'complete and utter 'two and a half handful' where I've had to put all my efforts in to managing her (she is 100% typical of her breed!), they might they have been so patient, calm and lovely to her and us. Thank you for being a lovely place to go, team F&H

Lovely pub, just don't order the Caesar Salad! Very small mixed salad, no parmesan at all and sauce tasted like Marie Rose! Very disappointing. Complained, but fell on deaf ears.

On a recent Sunday lunchtime 16 other cyclists and I visited The Fox and Hounds. Lily and her staff were friendly and really well organised to cope with our large group, serving a range of well kept drinks and good food from a varied Menu. Cyclists don’t travel well on a Sunday Roast meal so a varied Menu is important. Food and drinks were reasonably priced. The place has been refurbished, the interior is now light and airy and the exterior is clean and tidy throughout the paved and grassed areas. The whole package creates a relaxed atmosphere. As well as locals The Fox and Hounds welcomes cyclists and walkers. A real gem in this area of Essex.

A lovely and welcoming village pub. Popped in just for drinks why staying in the area and was told they have only opened again since September. Atmosphere and bar was really nice. There is a large car park and also nice outdoor seating areas with music playing too. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Will definitely come back when in area again and maybe book in for a Sunday dinner too!

Good set up for outside marquee dining, good supply of heaters we actually sat without coats most of evening. Food was good, normal pub offering and plenty of it, couldnt finish mixed grill so much food! One criticism was smokers allowed in the marquee, whereas other local pubs with similar outdoor marquees are still making sure they are non smoking areas. Afterall we are being told that if you can smell smokers smoke then you can pick up their covid air droplets as well.

We have been a few times mainly for drinks and this was the first meal for quite some time. I can only comment on the Sunday Lunch though and the ambience. We sat in a more or less coolish bar/restaurant. The radio was belting out the Magic Radiostation or was it Heart? Nevertheless it was loud and not pleasant to listen to all the advertisements on the radio. The Sunday lunch was perfectly bland. On the plus side steamed broccoli and cauliflower with the lean slices of beef and thin ish gravy is perfectly ok for a calorie conscious person or someone with digestive troubles, keeping all foods on the safe side. It was ok, the meat was nicely done, but as a choice for a special Sunday lunch treat I have to give the thumbs down - which I don’t do light heartedly as local businesses need our support. So please try other dishes. Also the area outside is all covered and invites for drinks in a covid safe environment. Would I go again? Absolutely, just not for Sunday Lunch

Had a Sunday roast takeaway and have to say it was delicious! 10/10!! Lovely joints of meat, cooked to perfection. Good veggies and roasties. All delivered with covid regulations adhered too! Dessert was just as delicious and homemade. Sad to see bad reviews of this pub on here as the food was very good quality and this was a takeaway so I’m sure would have been perfect served fresh inside the restaurant.

We came for a family dinner on 1st August to celebrate my daughters birthday. One member of our party had just come out of shielding. I let Vicki (landlady) know this in advance and she kindly reserved a table for us in a quiet area of the garden away from everyone else. The food was great. Burgers, both chicken and beef, shish kebab, scampi and sharing boards and my husband said the steak pie was amazing. We brought a cake along with us which I dropped off earlier in the day and this was no problem. The service was great. Nothing was too much trouble. Huge thumbs up to Vicki, Rory and their team.

Went to the Fox and Hounds, now that the new management (November 2019) have re-opened the kitchen, for a Sunday lunch with my parents. Had starter, main (had the beef, pork and vegetarian options) and desert - all were delicious and there was lots of it. Service was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The pub is having a full refurbish soon so will definitely go back to see what they have done with it.

I have been going to the Fox and Hound for over a year and a half , the food is consistently good but the service and attention has reached new heights of abysmal. I am allergic to dill and i ordered fish cakes with sauce tartare. The tartare was full of dill, so i explained that i could not eat it , they forgot to mention that the fish cake was also filled with dill... I ended up having to take medication . I told them they could at least have mentioned the dill ( unusual for a tartare sauce usually parsley, let alone checking the fish cake) as it could be potentially lethal. I was told "we are not going to have to write all the ingredient on the menu" ! not an apology, no a free coffee , not a word ... I have been a good costumer, i will never go there again . It does not take much to be kind and caring .

Como antes nos hizo sentir muy bienvenidos no sólo por el propietario, sino también a los lugareños. Perhaps it was the time of year but the service was incredibly slow and we found the staff rude when we enquired where our drinks were and if we could order. We also found, compared to other places, that the food was overpriced for the quality. Neither of us enjoyed our food at all - quite cold and bland. We could have complained but had waited that long for it, we decided to stick with it.When we looked into some of the reviews on this site before placing this review, we were surprised to see that some people had reviewed this and just one other pub on the same day - giving this pub a 5 star review and the other pub a 1 star review. We have a suspicion perhaps they were not genuine and we were led here on force premise. Either way, we did not enjoy our time here.

This pub has changed hands (last Christmas time) and with loads of improvements since then, including new kitchen and new wood-fired stove in the main bar, making it much warmer and cosier. Also a piano! The landlady Julie spent 10 years working in Italy and has installed a proper pizza oven – these are authentic hand-made Italian pizzas (no weird stuffed crust or mystery pineapple) to eat in or take away Wed-Sun. Oven is off Mon-Tue because it costs a lot to run. But if you visit at other times, there's pasta on the menu, along with more standard pub grub – curry, pie, bangers and mash and veggie option, all home cooked. The beer is now very well kept, according to my real-ale drinking husband. It's dog friendly – the landlady has two of her own – and still feels like a proper local pub. These are becoming as rare as hen's teeth in this neck of the woods.

The staff are fabulous, made us feel very welcome, fabulous range of beers and ciders. Seems a focal point for the village, a proper local pub. All the ingredients are there. However and it was probably just my choice of dish: chicken and leek pie. I then had apple crumble with ample custard, which was good. We had intended to have a bottle of wine but found them all unusually expensive (for a pub) so we didn't bother. There was nothing to complain about but again nothing to rave about either. i was a bit nervous about our visit for Sunday lunch early in March as I'd read some of the reviews, but I was very pleasantly surprised. We were booked for 6 people, but in the morning our party called up to see if we could add 3 children on too (booked so long ago we didn't know if we'd be bringing them all!) And they happily added 3 more to our table plus we bought 2 babies as well! I agree that they should have a few starters if only for them to make some more money, but the food we had was really good, plenty of it and loads of nice veg with it. I really can fault it, and for the groupon price we paid, I almost felt guilty! I'd definitely go back, and I hope they build in confidence and push the fact that they too are a fab option in clavering.

I understand the logic of a pub taking on a voucher system like this, but surly the point should be to try and make extra money during quieter times. I would have thought the idea of up selling starers, side dishes and desserts as well as extra drinks would have been paramount to the survival of any pub especially in the financial climate we find our selves in today. The fact that no starters or any other dishes where offered should have set my alarm bells ringing, it became obvious that the chef/cooks lack of skill probably only allowed then to offer 2 roasts and 3 desserts (one of which was Xmas pudding!!! In February!!!) the least said about the food the better, it was tiny portions, not verywell cooked and barley warm, but i guess as the pub was so cold it could actually of been hot when it left the kitchen but soon chilled on its journey through the cold bar! The beer was terrible, doom bar is one of my favourite real ales but I barely finished half of it, I should have had a bottle like my wife. I realise you get what you pay for but this was barely worth the £4.50 with the groupon voucher, we actually called into a,not her pub on the way home to have something else to eat!!!

This is a great local and dogs are allowed – welcomed even – except around mealtimes. My understanding is that this is because some customers have objected in the past. Our labrador has no trouble working the crowds for pork scratchings outside mealtimes – he was down there this afternoon doing just that. Other regular dogs include Ruby, Blue, Boots, Guinness and the terrible twins Alfie and Archie. Sunday lunch is particularly busy at the moment, due to a recent Groupon deal, but has been growing in popularity for the past year. My theory on that is the Fox is one of the few pubs locally where you can get decent roast chicken alongside pork, beef, etc. And the food is also all home cooked.

had a fantastic roast dinner ! probably one of the best ive had .. everything home cooked with generous helpings and I even got a Yorkshire pudding to go with chicken ! was very impressed with the service was made to feel very welcome .. read 1 negative review and can't believe we're talking about the same pub as the new owners clearly have the customers as there first priority ! I now bring my family down for a roast dinner regulary !

I totally disagree with the previous review,we went to the Fox and Hounds for Sunday lunch and had a lovely well cooked meal with large portions, the host and hostess are so friendly and love to chat with the customers,I feel customer satisfaction is their overall priority,we loved the charm of this olde world pub, don't know the fact of not allowing dogs as we didn't take one and to be honest we have a dog ourselves and I would not want to go out to eat and have dogs all about the place where food is being served, there are new owners in the pub but I feel they are trying very hard to make the pub a success especially in this day and age of so many pubs failing, would recommend to anybody to give it a try,big thumbs up from our family anyway.

when my sister moved to the village we loved walking down to the pub and eating reasonably priced home cooked food by the previous owners. Sunday lunches and special events were great value and dogs and children were welcome which makes sense for a small country pub trying to make a living. Alas the new owners dont seem to have understood what their customers want. Dogs are now banned ,the one meal we had during the week seemed to have come from a well known supplier and the Sunday lunch was really disapointing. As well as costing more the portions were ridiculaously small. one dish of vegtables was so tiny we asked for the other persons portion as it could only have fed 2 and was given to feed 5. The waitress came back to say they had lots of customers and that was all we could have. Would a few more green beans and cauliflower florets really have broken the bank?I hope the new owners realise that they are killing off their customer base .The pub is nowwhere as busy as it used to be and i wouldnt give them my money when there are 3 excellent pubs a 10 min drive away . Pity because the pub was one of the reasons my sister moved to the village and now we dont go in.

Clean and tidy. Warm welcome. Good food and drink menu. Sadly we were kept awake till 4 am with music 🎶 coming from above. The sink in the en-suite did not have a plug

The plough did a wake lunch for us today. Fantastic! Lovely food and they couldn’t do enough for us in not the easiest of circumstances. Would recommend unreservedly. Book them!

So disappointed in our visit. We braved the crowds and visited the market on a Saturday afternoon. The pub looked warm and welcoming on a very cold day. We were ushered to the bar when we first got there while a table was made ready for us. Only waited 10 minutes which was great. Ordered some bread and olives which took 20 minutes to arrive …. We should have taken more notice of the timing!!! After an hour of waiting for our lunch (a chicken wrap and a roast beef sandwich) we asked for the bill and for our order to be cancelled. The waitress apologised and offered us our sandwiches free of charge but quite frankly we’d had enough of waiting. Won’t bother going back but if you want to wait ages for food, it might suit you. All the gear and no idea springs to mind!!!

Flying from Stansted in the early hours so we rebooked this hotel as it was so amazing for us last summer! Staff, atmosphere, room all still amazing but last time we stayed in their rooms next door, off the pub and we much preferred it. This time we stayed above the pub and I didn’t realise how loud it would be until 11/11:30pm when the pub closed. I’m sure this would be ok for the regular customer who was making use of the pub until that time, but if you were travelling to the airport I would request not to have a room above the pub. All was still lovely just a comment to bear in mind for others!
