Opentable , completely ruined mother's day for mother and the four of us, we booked the only available slot 12pm, confirmed via opentable, we would definitely be attending when prompted the day before, on the day, we arrived at the venue , which had skips , concrete mixers and building materials out side the front of the building, when the door was answered , a builder said that the venue was no longer a restaurant, this left us with nowhere to go for us to go, opentable obviously not in contact with its supplier customers, no customer number on the platform obviously to avoid complaints, maybe in future I should just call directly the venue and not spoil the event

Absolutely wonderful. We had our wedding reception here 9 years ago and when we were gifted a voucher as a Christmas present we decided to use it for afternoon tea close to our anniversary. I have been dining at Swinfen on and of for over 36 years I have to admit I was disappointed with there new decor, it’s was no longer warm and comfortable but harsh and cold. Out first visit to Swinfell for a valentines taster meal and absolutely loved it! Cosy, candlelit, roaring log fires with just enough tables set out for privacy the venue with its calm atmosphere, low background music and discreet but informative and friendly staff was ideal for our Valentines meal The set taster meal itself was imaginative and each dish was delicious and well thought out to compliment the others so well done to the chefs! The Cep Foam, pickled shimeji with truffle was so good I pinched my husbands and could have eaten just that and been happy , the sweet and sour heritage tomatoes and the turbot with caviar gorgeous and the champagne rose and lychee sorbet refreshing The millionaires shortbread with toasted marshmallow ice cream and the hand made chocolate bon bons with coffee an excellent end to an excellent meal I couldn't have been happier with my valentines meal at Swinfell, fantastic value too for the quality of food and I can't wait until we can attend their next event!

I had a voucher for my birthday to spend at this venue so decided to go for lunch. We were shown to the bar area. No one else in sight! We were given the choice of eating in the bar area or the restaurant. The latter had a fire so we opted for that. We were the only people in the restaurant so the atmosphere was a bit flat although we did try our best! Soup was OK but what I would refer to as a bit thin - still not sure what the bread was as we had a lot of bits on our fingers. We both had the battered fish for mains. Peas were fine. Chips ordinary. The battered fish was disappointing. I had to remove the soggy batter as I could not eat it. The fish was lovely. My husband had the brownie and it was very good. I must say the quality of the wine I had for the price being charged was very poor. There are other restaurants around that offer much better value for money.

A birthday dinner sadly disappointing! Chosen Starter was not available - reason given "the menu is changing in next couple of weeks so we do not have this". There were only 4 other Starters which were unacceptable as an alternative, therefore neither of us had a starter. Selection of Mains was limited, 1 chosen Main couldn't be prepared without butter in the Mash, therefore was unacceptable. Chosen Mains = 1 Fish and Chips and 1 Sirloin Steak. The Fish was greasy and the Mushy Peas were minted which didn't go flavour-wise. The Sirloin was cooked as asked and tasted nice, however the presentation of the whole dish was a disappointment, ie: a piece of meat, a little dish of fries, a very small flat mushroom with a half tomato on top. No imagination from Chef displayed. The Mains took 50 minutes to come out, because the customers being served with the Taster Menus were prioritised over those in the restaurant that were eating from the Traditional Menu. We were not the only people to be disappointed. Informed the Server, who was pleasant and polite, who said the Chef would be informed, don't know if this happened as nothing was relayed back to us. Informed the Reception Staff, again who was pleasant, polite, very sorry and concerned, who said the Manager would be informed, don't know if this happened as nothing again was relayed back to us. They said they would talk to us before we checked out but they did not. Such a shame as a beautiful Hotel, stayed in the most expensive room and was expecting great things from the Birthday Meal. Have been before and it was exceptional food and service, that is why we came back, but will not return again! As a last point the breakfast on first morning was also a disappointment and staff were informed and again nothing was done about it. Disappointed that feedback is asked for by the Hotel but staff do not act upon it. Sorry to give such negative feedback but a partially spoilt weekend.

We were hoping from other TripAdvisor reviews that this would be first class dining experience, but it was not to be. After a good start with a well-laid table and good quality linen, a servings of amuse-bouches, and a good starter, the main course of rare beef was tepid. Not only the meat but also the vegetables. When commenting to the waitress, I was told that the chef had to keep the beef at 45 deg C to avoid it being tough. Be that as it may, that is no reason to serve the cauliflower-cheese at room temperature. Otherwise the meal was satisfactory.

This Four Seasons is deliberately high-end dining in an area where cheap eats typically prevail. In spite of this, the hotel is quaintly parochial, witnessed by the fascination with who was this customer who had booked from New York. It must have been a disappointment to find I was a local boy returned home, dining with his mother who had lived in the area for decades, but any let-down was not reflected in the warm, conversational and yet unintrusive service. We had gin and tonics in the bar, with the opportunity to peruse the menu and wine list, before being shown to the dining room. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night, but perhaps that was down to the end-February date. The dining room was fairly plain and predictable, albeit well-spaced lending to privacy, which is due to it being a hotel location that is used regularly by guests. Anything flash soon becomes tedious on repeat visits over a stay. The hotel is full of twists and turns and little quirks, such as the hidden entrance to the bathroom, while there is a ballroom to accommodate large groups. There is a new chef at the restaurant and he was certainly out to impress. The waiters knew every inch of the menu and described each of the multiple ingredients in fine detail. The menu is already changed, and so there is little point making a recommendation, although the pork starter was a solid piece of meat and a consequence slightly dry, despite the attendant apple sauce. On the other hand, the garden-based dishes were both light and delicious, while my mother declared herself delighted with the halibut. We drank a bottle of Nyetimber, and if you have yet to try this excellent English champagne, do treat yourself to a bottle. Overall it was a most pleasant and superior dining experience to similarly-priced New York restaurants. For the location, however, it is very expensive and thus would need just a little bit more in terms of taste-experience to earn a five-star rating.

My daughter and family live in Harpenden and we come from Chester, our grandchildren were due to be delivered to Chester on Saturday to stay with us for the next few days but, at the last moment the plans had to be changed. We had to try and find somewhere to meet up approximately half way for a good Sunday lunch, by chance I found Swinfen Hall and it was worth the journey and the fact they could not offer us a table until 2 for 2.30pm. The staff were excellent, the setting lovely, the food as good as anyone could wish for, we found it faultless and will return. We had been asked for a £100 deposit on booking as there were six of us, which was a little worrying when you know half of you have to travel on the M6 and the other half up the M1 for 85 to 90 miles but the only problem came after the meal. My husband went to pay the bill, he wanted to leave about 12.5% but the options on the card machine were for 10% 15% etc. It threw him, so he only left 10%, perhaps he will square it up next time by leaving 15%! We would certainly recommend anyone to visit this lovely old fashioned (in the best possible sense) hotel if they appreciate good food and good service in an attractive setting not far from the M6 toll. On that point, I now understand why there are warning signs for deer on the toll road, Swinfen Hall Hotel has it’s own herd, so I’ve learnt something today too!

From the moment you drive down the drive way to the hotel, you know it is going to be special. The hotel is really well maintained. All the staff were cheerful, and extremely helpful, especially the waiter. Because there was a wedding in the usual dining room, we were served in the Ballroom... you would not have known it wasnt their usual room as the service was spot on. The roast beef was exceptional (though I would point out it is rather rare... ok for me.. but may be a little too rare for some...), as was the roast pork. As a small example of their service, they specifically cooked the beef a little more for the child who was with us. All selection of roast potatos, carrots, green beans and cauliflower cheese were served and all cooked perfectly. Deserts also went down well. We live locally, and have visited previously some time ago with variable experiences. This time was different. From our arrival, we were welcomed and served attentively but not intrusively. We chose the 9 course tasting menu for £80, but opted not to go with the wine flight. Instead, the lovely Sarah advised us on wines to our taste and pocket, and gave us a taste before we decided to order. She was cheerful and smiling, and made us feel valued and welcome. The food was excellent, and the courses well-paced. Original and very high quality cooking. The chef presented some of the dishes himself and stayed to chat. Perhaps the only criticism was that the soups used to dress a couple of the dishes were over salty for our taste. Otherwise an excellent experience and we will return.

We tried the 9 course tasting menu while we were staying at the hotel and enjoyed every part of it. Staff were attentive without being overbearing. The chef came out in person to deliver some of the courses, our only surprise was that there weren't more people in the restaurant.

What a wonderful setting. Great views. Myself and my wife went for afternoon tea. Only way to discribe it marvellous. From the time we entered the hotel we were made to feel special , we wetere quickly shown shown to our table. The food was typical afternoon tea choice of sandwiches cakes and cream scones. We choose coffee in preference to tea nice flavour. The staff were friendly and professional. There was nothing to much for them to make our short stay a special occasion. Would recommend to anyone. A special place for afternoon tea.

Another visit to the FS restaurant here at Swinfen with the usual attentive staff and the beautiful grandeur of the building.

We have enjoyed a number of great meals at this restaurant in the past. However, it seems to have lost its sparkle. This is an expensive place to eat, and to stay, and therefore one books for a special occasion and expects a magical evening. Our cutlery was never correctly matched to the courses, the food varied between really good for some courses and frankly disappointing for others, sometimes there was nearing thirty minutes between courses, sometimes the wine came ten minutes before the course it was meant to complement, sometimes after we had started eating (we ordered the nine course tasting menu). The previously tasteful crockery had been changed for mismatched heavy earthenware, some of which was inappropriately matched to the food so that it was difficult to eat, as well as being aesthetically quite unpleasing. The table arrangement also did us no favours as we ended up sideways on to each other so that it was difficult to talk properly, one of us facing another table and the other staring at the wall. The tables were crammed in more than previously and this was the result. This extended even to the breakfast, where we both ordered the cooked breakfast and had it served on totally different plates, the previously generous pots of tea reduced to trendy glass coffee pot style teapots which provided one decent cup of tea before another half stewed and unpleasant. The cooked breakfast itself was good though. All in all, it was often disappointing and not worth the very high price we paid for what was meant to be a treat for a special occasion.

Very nice staff and very good service. The only thing that could have been better was if the main course was hotter. They were only just warm enough. Other than that very good.

I dined here recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was beautifully presented and very professionally served. The portion size was not huge and therefore wouldn't phase a smaller eater. Nice background music adding to a very relaxing ambience.

Booked a table for afternoon tea for my mother's 90th birthday, but how disappointing. Met at the door and shown into a private room, so far so good, a bit cool, but a nice open fireplace, but no fire, someone did ask if we would like the fire lit, but then left it, no-one came to check it, and it only actually took hold because we tended it.

Beautiful restaurant in a beautiful hotel food was just amazing - everything was so elegant and tasty. quite expensive but quality of food justifies the price. staff were great - they were very polite and professional yet friendly :-) very sophisticated and super posh but not modern posh - decor is very traditional and unique xxxx we loved it if you ever go there, try Guiness Bread - you wouldnt believe the quality!

Malt shovel has now been serving food on a Sunday for a few weeks now and had heard good things about it as I live in the village. Daughter and partner came over on Sunday to give it a go. Good job I booked on the Wednesday before as fully booked when we went in. Was a lovely atmosphere with a birthday party taking place. We were seated at our table ordered drinks which were promptly bought to us. Guinness was superb. Looked at menu and 3 things on there . Beef ,Pork, and for the vegetarians Nut roast. Well we all had 1 of each so a great way ao judge all the food. I had the beef which was cooked to perfection for me being red in middle and oh so tender. Came with mash roasting cauliflower cheese and vegetables came in separate dishes and the cauliflower cheese was 1 of the best I have had . Lovely meal my daughter had the Nut roast . She isn't a vegetarian as she asked if they would put a pig in blanket on ther to which they obliged. Another excellent meal and I would certainly not hesitate in having a Nut roast. It was interesting to taste the difference in my roast potatoes and hers due to the different fat they were cooked in. And her partner had the Pork again which came with all the trimmings and crackling too. He commented how lovely that was too. Well we were not really hungry enough for a sweet but unfortunately 😕 there was Knickerbocker glory on the Menu 😛 so it had to be done and so glad we did. Was superb just reminded me of being a lad again being treated by my parents. Tinned fruit in Jelly and cream and icecream 🍦 made my day. All in all a lovely experience and will be eating there again. The night before Saturday wS there 1st night of serving food . Heard good reviews about that too so next meal probably on a Saturday evening.
