We were looking forward to lunch, the online menu was excellent and we were particularly encouraged as one of our party required gluten free and the menu promised a good choice. Unfortunately no gluten bread in any of the many versions on the menu was available - although this was not known when ordering. Alternative items were offered but a burger without bun will never be the same. The other lunch dishes ordered were mediocre at best. We chose not to complain to the stall as this would have further reduced the potential for a convivial family lunch. The pub environment was good and location perfect for our trip with excellent onsite parking.

One of those places small enough where you walk in and everyone looks at you and listens to your whole check in food etc etc. That wasn't nice for me. Breakfast was regimented and didn't get a lot even tho it was nice enough. Cosy fire and maybe I'm behind the times but a bit pricey overall. At breakfast we were all told not to charge our devices for some reason, again seems a bit antiquated.

Excellent meal great food freshly cooked and new menu choices. Sad to see bad reviews and admit decor not my cup of tea but I come for the food. If you have a complaint I’m surprised it’s not dealt with well we have always found the staff charming but I guess it depends on how you treat them?! Regarding dogs in the dining area I have to agree with them as don’t want to eat in a dining room with them much as I love them and why complain when offered an alternative?! We love it here !

Having now read other poor reviews, I can only concur. I was going to be kind & give it a 3* rating but honestly it was not worth it. Our food was tepid & I have never eaten peas which were so bullet-like. The homemade fishcakes were just unseasoned potato with chewy miniscule pieces of indeterminate fish - and this was on the specials board. Desserts were pleasant I understand. I was told they had 'run out of' decaf coffee. Service was acceptable. Decor is plastic, dated & without any colour scheme at all. I also note that the management have not replied to any of the negative comments. Such a shame as this pub used to be a real 'go to'.

We decided to eat somewhere different and support our local establishments, however, on reflection we should have walked out straight after coming through the door. We were barely greeted by the young, completely disinterested waitress. We had our 5 year old daughter with us yet 3 adult menus given. We were reluctantly given a kids menu after asking for one along with a handful of cheap pencils. The tables were sticky, obviously the cleaning products used react with the surface. Menus had to be peeled from the table. Waitress did offer to wipe the table over again, despite the issue not being that it was dirty, we appreciated the sentiment. All three of our chairs were broken, after checking it was okay to swap one of them with one that was not broken, moving them myself, the waitress then came and aggressively slammed down another chair at the table next to ours. Wonder why they’re broken. We received next to no service throughout our meals, the girl obviously does not want to be in hospitality. Cheap lights in centre of each table, didn’t help with visibility in our dark and dinghy corner of the restaurant. Got in the way more than anything. The decor throughout is extremely dated with lots of cheap plastic clutter all over the place. Ladies toilets looks like a tacky 8 year olds bedroom with nasty butterfly stickers all over the place. My daughter thought it was great though. Waitress had less than no clue on ales and beers being served and didn’t have the initiative to ask another member of staff for help (despite us being the only people in there) meaning my partner had to choose blind (bad decision made but this was more personal preference than anything, had he have been given more information this could have been different). I asked for a lemonade and lime however there was next to no lime added. No drink refills were offered at any point during our meal. I thought I was going for the safe option by ordering the Bull Burger. Big mistake. The burger was burnt, the bread bun was stale and the thin slither of fatty bacon may as well not have been there. The cheese was curdled and sour. Chips undercooked. Corn on the cob under cooked and completely inedible. The kids menu is shockingly small, unless they like sausage, egg and chips or a burger. We assumed the meal would come with veg or something healthy, but no. Just a plate of 2 sausages and salty chips. We had to give her bits from our own plates just to make a more balanced meal. The quality of the steak my partner ordered was extremely poor and the chef clearly doesn’t know the term rare or how to cook it. We asked to talk to the manager at the end of the meal who was standoffish and incredibly rude. He stated that all plates had been cleared (incorrect) and was clearly unsympathetic to the idea of eating out with a child. The last thing we want to be doing is sending food back, waiting for new (which would probably be spat in) complaining in front of our daughter and prolonging this disaster of an evening. We just wanted to eat what we could and leave so we could get her to bed at a sensible time. He did offer to remove 20% from the bill and ended up taking our 3 drinks off, which I don’t personally feel was adequate, but just wanted to leave. Overall, I’m sure the rude staff will be pleased to hear we will never return here. Shame as this is a 5 minute drive from home and could have easily become a regular family meal out. We now see why it’s always quiet when we drive past. Avoid at all costs. This place COULD be excellent.

Unfortunately, the staff don’t understand the rights of access for disabled people with assistance dogs. I joined friends in the restaurant and my wife was denied access with her hearing dog to the carpeted area of the restaurant meaning that our table had to move. One staff member tried to claim that the move was related to sitting with our friends (actually other family members). However, I was told by the male staff member that we were being moved because the dog wasn’t allowed in the restaurant - we do it this was for people with allergies. I explained that this was illegal but they responded that they know the law and that’s how they do it. We were forced to move. When I tried to engage again I was just given more flannel. Some helpful guidance for the staff and publican. What if someone is or might be allergic to dogs? Refusing to allow access to people with assistance dogs because other people ‘might’ be allergic to dogs is likely to be unlawful disability discrimination. This is because the Equality Act 2010 states that service providers must make reasonable adjustments to policies for disabled people. This includes amending ‘no dogs’ and ‘no pets’ policies to allow access for assistance dogs. If there is an identifiable person with an allergy to dogs then employers and service providers should take reasonable steps to ensure that person has minimal or no contact with dogs; reasonable steps are unlikely to include banning all assistance dogs. No apology, no understanding. Very poor indeed.

We met some friends yesterday for lunch before walking the dogs - we had 4 very boisterous dogs with us! - and I was really impressed with the lunch and the friendliness of all the members of staff. They gave us a corner table which was really helpful to contain the dogs away from other people - they were very excited to see each other 😬 I had pork belly which was beautifully soft with plenty of crackling. It was served with a huge Yorkshire pudding, cauliflower cheese and veg and it was all delicious. We also had roast chicken and beef, all delicious. The lovely lady behind the bar even filled our flask with fresh coffee to take on our walk and couldn’t have been nicer - even though we were causing chaos with the dogs!! We went with a group of 6 friends for Sunday lunch - with trepidation as we knew this pub had had an 'up and down' reputation over the 30 yrs I have lived in the area. I didn't think we were going to get good food, but I was completely surprised! I rarely choose the roast if I go out for Sunday Roast as I hate 'mass produced roast dinners' but decided to give them a try. I was glad I did...It was superb! Tender meat, crispy roast potatoes which were actually roasted rather than the more commonly produced 'steamed' potatoes, a lovely Yorkshire pudd (not burnt!) and the veg (my favourite bit) were very tasty and we were given a good selection.Above all - everything was piping hot and served by some young staff who were very friendly and did their job well. Despite the dining room being full, we didn't have to wait long for anything. I would certainly come again.

Anyway once we were seated, menus were brought over by nicci, myself and Rosemary were amazed at the vast choice of food that was available. The welcome we received was warm and friendly and our room was very nice, clean and nicely decorated. The chef then came out to apologise himself and he also said our meal would be free and we could have 2 complimentary desserts as well. The meal was absolutely delicious - the meat was so tender and the chef's own mint sauce with the lamb was the best of all. In fact we were so replete that we did not avail ourselves of the desserts. We hosted a New Years Eve party with 12 in the house overnight. A 5 mile walk ended at the Flying Bull for their New Years Day brunch greatly enjoyed by all. The new landlord made a very good impression and the food was served promptly. We’ll certainly be visiting more frequently.

Visited here with my partner and the food was very bland and tasteless, it wasn’t cooked very well either, shame as I visited here about 3 months before and had a lovely meal.

I phoned to book for four earlier in the week and to confirm a veggie option was available to be reassured that although they only did roasts on a Sunday they had a very nice nut roast available always. They didn’t! They sold out the day before apparently so I was offered sausages or a burger but no apology. The rest of the table had a basic roast which was all it was. For 1pm on a Sunday the place was empty, no one else in the restaurant which speaks volumes. We will not be returning.

My friends and I always stop at The Flying Bull, for a meal on our way to the Spa. This October we thought we would book as there were five of us and it was a Sunday. So glad we did, it was very busy. The roast beef was lovely as was the gammon. Good friendly service and good food what could be better. Looking forward to eating there again.

Stayed overnight here on our way through to London and so glad we did! The staff there, particularly Robin and Natasha, were super friendly and accommodating and really made our stay. Enjoyed a great English breakfast there for the morning also. Would highly recommend dropping by on your way through!

Very disappointed, my home made burger was definitely not home made and the chips were dry, my partners pie was awful, I attended this pub a few months back and had the same food and it was outstanding. Shame they can't continue with the great food.

Having stopped at the Flying Bull on a number of occasions prior to our next day departure from Portsmouth to Bilbao. It has been a great location for us as we have two small dogs and was a dog friendly pub. However on arrival we were told the pub had changed hands the previous week and although the new owners would honour previous bookings dogs would not be allowed in the future great shame. As normal we decided we would have our evening meal in the pub it was always great to choose from the daily specials board alass it is no more you have to choose from menu which we were told changes daily it did not look any different to us, my wife and I both chose steak and ale pie when it arrived both pies were very dry with no moisture inside the pie I persevered but my wife’s s pie was inedible and was returned told by Landlady that we would not charge for her pie. It was still the normal lady who made the breakfasts and was very good as normal.I wish the new owners well but hope that they don’t undo the hard work that the previous tenants did to make the place such a successful and welcoming place it is with sadness that we won’t be stopping there again even if they changed their policy on dogs

First time I have been here. Bit dark and bare inside but customer service and meal was good. We had various starters which ranged from white bait, goats cheese, and soup. I had the goats cheese starter which I have to say was quite delicious. I had the fish risotto which was also good, the other meals ranged from fish, burgers, to curry and everyone was happy with their meal. When asked if the lemon meringue was home made a resounding , no not home made. Quite adequate meals and the price was very good. Not much space in main bar whilst waiting for others to turn up so bit tight for space. All in all a satisfactory encounter with a new pub!

Took mum out for Sunday lunch and a country walk, along with our Spaniel. We were all welcomed by the landlord and shown to our table. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Our dog was provided with a biscuit treat or two and a water bowl. The menu is extensive with specials on the board. We all decided to have the roast beef which was nicely cooked, plenty of it with lots of tasty trimmings. We don't usually have deserts but were quite taken with the menu. Mum and I had ice cream (lots of lovely flavours all made locally) and my husband had the chocolate torte with vanilla ice cream. All were lovely. The place has a good bar, very clean and accessible toilets, lots of seating were the tables are not too close to each other. There is a lovely garden and plenty of parking. All in all we had a very enjoyable experience and will take mum and our dog again.

Its one of those, the locals fall silent when you walk in places. It's one of those, the locals get served first places. However get over that and the food choice is very good much better than an average pub menu. The staff try very hard to please and maybe they should be left to get on with the job rather than have the locals tell them how to do the job.

From the moment I rang to book a table and ask about disabled access for my disabled Father I received excellent customer service. The colleague on the phone gave me great information about where to park. On arrival the colleagues in the restaurant could not have been more helpful and ensured that we were given lots of space for the wheelchair. The service we received was of the highest level throughout and the Sunday lunch was of a great quality. Thank you for making the occasion such a happy one.

This pub is fast becoming our most favoured restaurant. Today we popped in for quick lunch and the usual warm welcome let us. My wife had the smaller fish and chips and she said it was excellent and more than enough. I had the duck and noodles off the special board and I have to say I loved it. The device was as usual spot on.We did not have time for a pudding or coffee so with regret paid and left.We will be back soon!I can also recommend the Sunday lunch but booking is essential.

A wonderfully warm and cosy pub nestled in Rake next to the road for convince. At first you walk into a inviting building and are met with friendly staff at the bar. The food is typically pub prices so a touch on the expensive side but as a treat it is worth splashing out! The pie was very good as were the chips however the drinks did not provide good value for money in my opinion and were a little too expensive for my taste. Overall a lovely pub that was a bit pricey but overall a wonderful experience with friendly and helpful staff.

My wife and I stayed at the Flying Bull for one night. I can honestly say that it was a brilliant time. The staff are lovely, especially Teresa and the lovely Kate. We were made welcome from the off. The room was prefect for our needs. Clean and tidy. We had a great nights sleep. Some are rooms are separate from the main pub. The shower was probably the best we ever had. Great big shower head and the water pressure was really strong. We ate in the restaurant in the evening. The food was fantastic and our thanks go out to the chef. The breakfast was also brilliant. We had simple poached eggs on toast, fresh eggs. I think they may of been laid that morning from the resident chickens. This is superb b&b. We will be back as we need to visit the area once a month. Don't just take my word for it go and try for yourself . Thanks "The flying bull" keep up the good work.
