Duke & Rye in Chichester

I went with friends to celebrate a 60th birthday very poor chose of food no steak or roasts.I explained that I had gone online to view menu and to download the 30% off voucher was told they hadn't been informed about it!! A very disappointing experience would not recommend.

Dirty place, toilets flooded. Service was terrible. One staff serving the bar on Xmas eve. Food was closed due to lack of staff

What a great pub! A stunning old church that has been converted. Food great and atmosphere great! There are so many ways you would use this space and we will definitely be back!

We nearly had a disaster when we found out the place holding our wedding lunch closed down just 3 weeks before the ceremony. After a slightly panicked look around I found this place who were very understanding and managed to get us in on such short notice. Very grateful for their help with everything.

I am sure the pub is rocking in the evening, the building is fantastic but the drinks are limited and the staff were not welcoming.

Interesting pub within a church building complete with gargoyles. We didn't order food, just stopped for coffee which was nice. Comfy seating.

Un grupo de 18 de nosotros vinimos el año pasado para nuestro almuerzo de Navidad. Fue tan bueno que reservamos de nuevo este año. Vaya cambio. Nuestra mesa no estaba lista para nosotros, el servicio era muy lento y la comida era la peor comida de Navidad que he tenido. Una rebanada de pavo, verduras muy poco cocidas y para colmo mi pinta de cerveza era corta. Quizá el año que viene debamos mirar de nuevo.

Lovely atmosphere, amazing staff! Came here for lunch with a friend and had a great time! Food and drinks were nice and a fair price but the highlight of my visit was being served by April, she was so kind and attentive, taking care of everything for us. It was my first visit here but definitely not the last I highly recommend coming here, especially if April is behind the bar.

Who doesn’t like having a drink or meal in a converted church? - staff are fantastic, pub is clean & tidy and best of all the lines are extremely well kept so the beer tastes incredible. 10/10 would recommend a visit, even if you don’t live in Chichester!

Stumbled upon this converted church/pub this evening during a visit to Chichester, will be back. Swing/jive-type music playing, which fit nicely with the ambiance. Large range of draught lagers available, well poured.

Waited 40 minutes for a baguette and gammon and chips. The place was not even slightly busy. We gave up, got our money back and went to Gregg's

Un sábado por la tarde muy tranquilo pensamos en probar este pub para el almuerzo. Esperamos 60 minutos para 2 baguettes - nos preguntamos dónde estaba nuestra comida después de 40 minutos para que nos dijeran que venía y nos podrían ofrecer descuento si queríamos otra bebida, sin disculpas, sin preocupaciones. Cuando la comida finalmente apareció fue extremadamente decepcionante, pedimos baguettes de bistec. Era un sub rollo no una baguette, el filete estaba frío y demasiado cocido y muy escaso. Extremadamente decepcionado, no volverá.

Poor customer service, staff were rude and abrupt when you tried to order from one side of the bar. No food available until 6p.m with the website advertising it 12-8p.m. Poor communication for one member of staff who needs better customer service. Won’t be rushing back for a drink or food.

Strange place - feels like the original church has been defaced with a poor quality pub. Weird 80s music channel playing and expensive beer. Would recommend the Wetherspoons next to it instead!

Appalling customer service, the staff are rude, confrontational and do not understand groups reserving a specific area for the purpose of accessibility and to accommodate a group of over 30 people. Resulting in double bookings.

Lovely interior. Such a shame about the very basic food and a rude member of staff. Our meal was missing cheese and mince outlined in the menu and when we brought this up a rather uninterested barmaid explained it was an issue with the chain and refused to add any of the missing items ordered. We paid full price for this

The woman working at this pub was by far the rudest employee I’ve ever encountered. We did nothing wrong, yet she made us feel completely unwelcome. She messed up our order, then reacted by stamping her feet and displaying shockingly unprofessional body language and tutting. It’s no surprise the place was so empty.

Quite the novelty to have a beer inside the church. Interesting architecture and stained glass windows, fun facts too. Beer was fine, as was the food, shame they were missing some items from the menu. Engaging landlady.

We came on a recent visit to Chichester. Our daughter, fiancé and pals invited us along to the speed quiz. We had s lovely evening and the quiz was lots of fun. They do it regularly and love it. When we walked in it was a wow moment, such a cool use of the interesting space. Great to have the big screens, certainly handy in our quiz. I opted for a pint of their cheapest ale, I can't remember what itvwas, but it slipped down lovely :)

Great converted church bar, opposite the cathedral. Great experience for a lunchtime beer. Wonderful welcoming staff, our Labrador was well looked after by April. We will be back, thank you!

I came in last Friday and was blown away by the stunning decor and aesthetic and that was merely the icing on top of the metaphorical cake of my visit. The woman behind the bar was polite and very happy to help and was very knowledgeable on both the menu and the Ales. (Went for the Razorback) The food was hot, fresh and delivered at a great speed and will throughly recommend a visit to friends and family. I will look forward to returning in the near future.

Great use of an old church but they have kept most of the original features

Nice venue aesthetically but very rude bar maid. Made to feel very unwelcome. No wonder is was empty. Downed my drink in about 10 seconds and made a fast exit.

Lovely venue, but the only barmaid was horrendously rude. On a quiet Saturday afternoon turned up with my friends. She was cold and blunt, acting like we weren’t welcome. Finished our first drink very quickly and left. Won’t be returning.

Went in at 5.30 on a Wed eve. Bought a pint , then asked about ordering food big mistake, barmaid became a bit surly and said no food tonight , so drank up and moved on. Won't be going there again. Disgruntled of chichester

Saw nice menu on website, walked especially to your place to eat last night & when we got there, no food was being served. Had a drink & left. Sullen miserable service. Very disappointed.

Very quiet when I visited mid-week early afternoon. Staff friendly and helpful. Being in a former church it is very open but quite interesting. Didn't gave any food as menu wasn't very inspiringg

Lovely building and the barman was nice. The beer choice when we visited was Ringwood. Both beers were below par. But I don't think it was anything to do with the pub.

This is my favourite place in town. Lovely staff, good selection on tap. The atmosphere is just great, with the old gothic architecture. Cannot recommend enough

The manager is a nasty piece of work. I wouldn't go within 50 feet of her. Nasty and aggressive. I think her name was Cassy? Complete bully, to staff and customers, and even shouted at friends 2 year old for crying! Such a shame. Beautiful place other wise and the other staff we met werw been really lovely. People need to learn to be professional if they are a manager. Not be a horrible human being. She obviously doesn't have children.

Somehow a very cool place. A large former church turned pub. At the same time, something strange for a religious person. But that might be an idea of ​​how to get young people into church.😉 Facilities, decoration, cleanliness and rooms are absolutely top notch.

A lovely visit to this pub in a church. Went in looking for a bite to eat. Was not disappointed. It’s not always an easy call stopping off in a pub for lunch when travelling solo especially when visiting a new area on holiday. Negotiating the foibles of ordering and getting a table when a lady on her own can be tricky. The staff here were so nice and helpfully. I was served by two friendly ladies, the manager Abbie and another lady also called Abbi. Very fitting in this setting. They were lovely and gave me time between courses, none of this rushing you through your meal. I had lovely food and a glass of wine (well stretched that to two since the place was so nice) to wash it down. Service was attentive without being intrusive. I felt very welcome. Often if I stop for lunch by myself I take a book as it can feel weird sitting in a pub by myself. Not this one. Very relaxed and was even offered a book if I wanted one. I felt so comfortable in the venue I didn’t even need one. Definitely would go back when next passing this way on holiday.

An amazing space to sit and relax, for either formal appointments or casual meets, this place is a converted church and has it all, I frequent it regularly for so many reasons, it’s fully wheelchair accessible including a toilet facility perfectly adequate. I have many anxieties yet they all seem to disappear due to the most relaxed way you are attended too, the staff and manager have always gone above and beyond to make it a comfortable space where I can also have my working dog and bring friends, it’s an extremely dog friendly place, with plenty of water bowls to go round. the food has always been a real appeal and they never disappoint with a great varied menu! Catering for everyone is extremely important to them. any thing your not happy with will be looked into and rectified straight away if required . they listen, they serve to the best of their ability with a smile and passion towards customer’s satisfaction. I highly recommend a visit just to take in the amazing feel of this wonderfully warm welcome.

Unusual to find a pub in a former church but it gives a uniquely enjoyable atmosphere. An architectural gem serving drinks and some smaller meals.

Turned up one evening and waited ages before anyone even showed up behind the bar. Ask for a table for dinner and told kitchen is closed. Yet nothing outside the pub indicated this. How hard is it to put a sign up outside????

This is a lovely pub in a church opposite bus stops and Chichester Cathedral! We went in for food and a drink. But unfortunately it was the day the kitchen was shut! We had a lovely pint of real ale though and a look round! It's still got the stained glass windows and columns! Interesting building! It was also quiet in there!

Absolutely loved my visit to Duke & Rye! Nestled in a charming old church, the atmosphere is both cozy and breathtaking, thanks to the stunning stained glass windows that add a magical touch. The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. The drinks selection is just as impressive, with a variety of local ales and spirits to choose from. It's the perfect spot for an evening out on Chichester center. Highly recommend if you're looking for a place with character and drinks! There is a pool table

Visited 1pm Saturday 6th April with my sister and boyfriend, we were staying nearby for a family wedding and had tried to book dinner for 9 of us on the Friday night but they weren’t able to take our booking.. thankfully! We ordered 2 basic meals, scampi and a chicken kebab, eventually, after asking twice where the meals were and being told “it’s ok don’t worry” the meals arrived, which was over an hour after ordering. (Note: About 30 minutes after we had ordered, my niece and nephew joined us and had ordered and eaten their food before ours was even served.) The kebab was cold and the tartare sauce had a small curly dark hair in it! I discretely told the barman who said “that’s weird the chef has blue hair so I’m not sure where that’s come from”. He offered a replacement meal I said I just didn’t want the tartare sauce as I had already waited an hour for meal. My boyfriend then called him over and told him his kebab was cold and he eventually apologised and gave us a refund for our meals, on the condition he took the meals away, ie “If you give me your food I’ll give you your money back”. My boyfriend had been really sick all night and I was trying to tempt him to eat something, however he had to leave the place after only eating a few lukewarm fries. Apart from the overpriced substandard food, and the extremely poor customer service, the venue was really disappointing. The building is a lovely old church and could be an absolute goldmine but there was literally no atmosphere and the decor is really lacklustre. Also there was no toilet paper in the ladies which is pretty unacceptable considering it was early afternoon and was hardly anyone in the place, my sister also got stuck in the toilet cubicle!! Bad customer service, huge wait, cold food, no atmosphere sadly in a potentially beautiful venue etc etc! Just don't do it!!!

a bit quiet but extremely polite staff

We had booked a table, informing them we had a man in a wheelchair with us, when we arrived the table was up some stairs, so we had to try and cram round a small table as we couldn't get the wheelchair up the stairs. Loads of the items on the menu were unavailable, which was disappointing, there was also a long wait for the food. When the puddings were brought out, a couple were wrong and the staff seemed to blame us for this. We will not be returning after this experience.

Went for a belated birthday with the family, lovely old church building but that was the best bit saddley. Working as a manager in hospitality i did expect a bit better. We got our starters and mains altogether on a 6 person table that made it a bit cramped and wasn't explained why they came all at once and if that was ok? ordered new potatoes with pie(which was nice) but I got chips instead but they where nice too. The cauliflower wings were ment to come with lime wedge and rocket but just the cauliflower. No mango chutney on the curry which I had to ask for. And the puddings, so sad really looking forward to the fudge cake which I asked for warm but came cold and there was no mistake in saying it was dry and stale, which I did send back and got a refund. I hate leaving bad reviews to my fellow workers in the trade and I would of taken the time to explain this to them but we had young kids that we needed to get home, so in a rush, but this was not great and hope they can improve. Sorry guys

Beautiful repurposing of an old church. We stopped for a quick refresh after a 10 mile hike - most welcome half a Guinness from a delightful female bar tender.

Excellent visit today. I work as a support worker and we went with a few of the adults that attend the centre where I work. April was at the bar and she was very welcoming and accomdating to all of our group. This meant we all had a nice afternoon out where the attendees were able to play some pool and just be relaxed in the environment. I have passed this on to my managers and we will definitely come back to the Duke and Rye- especially if this bad weather continues!

I love this pub . It’s a converted church and it’s very large and yet cosy at the same time . I think it’s great for all ages and has a wide range of selection for drinks , although I’ve not eaten here yet . It’s my fav pub in Chichester . It’s opposite the cathedral, so easy to find .

The new bartender Thom made us feel so welcome after our team meeting, he was super quick to deal with all the customers. He would make an awesome general manager

I came into with my friend for a few drinks and games of pool and a lovely bar tender called Shannon provided a great atmosphere and was very friendly, giving us advise on other places to visit and even went the extra mile and created a beautiful shamrock on top of our Guinness’s. I would definetly recommend the duke and rye

Fantastic old church converted to a pub retaining many of its original features. Nice selection of beers and friendly service!

Me and my friend walked into the bar and I told the female bartender “Hello, Can I get a desperado?” and then she said I should correct myself and it’s “Please can I get a desperado?” I was surprised and shocked and so was my friend because she was talking like she was our mum or something. I had to even laugh about it and she still gave a cold face and rather asked for our IDs, I mean I am 26 and my friend is 24 and we look way above 18 but I think it was an excuse to kick us out if we forgot it. Very disgusting customer service, quite a shame, I was very disappointed and even my friend who is white and British said it was giving racist vibes towards me and he was disappointed too because he recommended it as a good place to drink. The only reason why I am giving it 2 star is for the good environment but horrible customer service. We even wanted to eat but had to leave cause no one even asked if we needed anything else.

Went in today and was greeted by the lovely Cassie! The pub itself is absolutely stunning and Cassie made me and my partner feel welcomed!

Ignored by bar staff. Despite standing at the bar for an extended amount of time the staff seemed to be happier serving louder yobs than the well behaved customers. Not a nice experience. Go elsewhere if you have the opportunity.

Beautiful converted church which makes this the most stunning bar to be in. Good selection of beers, wines and spirits etc... Food is great too. Very friendly and welcoming staff, especially Cass, great service and always a laugh. Had a great night here, definetly recommend.

Converted church with lots of character, however it does give a slight run down spoons vibe. Could probably do with a little refresh and clean again if I'm being honest.

Quirky, fascinating, not to be missed..

Was served by Connor who was lovely. Had a midday Saturday lunch and the food was excellent. Can recommend the cowboy burger but even better was my wife’s veggie burger which also had cauliflower fried wings. Everything was perfect including the freshly baked burger buns and crisp fries were spot on. A very positive lunch experience👌

Came in on a random Tuesday (16th jan) was expecting to stay for 1 drink but ended up staying for hours. The bar tender (Shannon) was incredible. Sat chatting, good service and recommendations while serving all customers and talking to them Individually. Busier than last Friday night when I came in. Would recommend and for only having 1 server, it’s great. She even recommended a game of pool (which I didn’t know they had). Would come with such friendly service, other members have not been so good so well done and will be coming more often!

While the food may not be particularly good, or the service anywhere near spectacular, this pub is in an interesting and eye catching setting and good spot to stop for a pint after visiting the nearby cathedral.
